The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 19: Chitin and Steel
The piercing acoustic alarm echoed off the damp stone walls, fading into a cacophony of wet, frantic scuttling and sharp, rattling screeches. From the shadowed vault above, the Chitin-Stalkers dropped like dark rain.
Panic shattered the scholars' composure instantly. The female scholar let out a piercing shriek, dropping her brass astrolabe as a multi-legged horror lunged toward her with snapping mandibles dripping with pale, smoking acid.
"Form line! Hold the perimeter!" Evander roared, his voice cutting through the panic like a war-horn.
The four veteran guards didn't hesitate. With practiced, fluid coordination, they drew their short swords and interlocking bucklers, forming a tight semicircle around the cowering academics. Their light adventurer armor scraped against the stone as they braced for the impact, meeting the first wave of charging beasts with heavy shield-bashes and swift, brutal thrusts.
Across the chamber, Zevryn moved like a ghost caught in a lightning storm. He didn't panic. He didn't shout tactical directives twice. These weren't surface bandits or wild mountain wolves; these were creatures from the lightless tunnels of his past, creatures he had hunted, gutted, and survived against for centuries in the deep Underdark.
As a massive Chitin-Stalker lunged straight for his throat, its jagged forelegs whistling through the air, Zev stepped seamlessly to the side. The Drifting Moon style flowed through him without conscious thought. His short saber flickered upward, deflecting the acidic bite, while his long mithril blade sang a lethal, silver arc.
Schlk.

The beast's armored neck parted cleanly in a spray of dark, viscous fluid. Without missing a beat, Zev pivoted on his heel, his left hand driving the secondary blade deep into the eye-cluster of a second stalker creeping along the base of the sarcophagus.
"They're coming through the upper fissures!" one of the veteran guards yelled, swinging his blade hard to crack an exoskeleton.
Two more stalkers dropped directly behind the cluster of panicking scholars. One of the male scholars stumbled backward, tripping over his own heavy robes as a beast raised a razor-sharp limb to strike.
Zev flicked his wrist. Drawing upon his bronze storage ring, he seamlessly swapped his grip as he closed the distance in a blur of motion. Before the beast's limb could descend, Zev drove his boot hard into its midsection, sending it skidding across the flagstones, and brought his blade down in a crushing overhead chop that pinned the creature to the floor.
He pulled his blade free, wiping the dark ichor clean with a practiced flick of his wrist.
Within minutes, the chamber fell deathly quiet, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of the guards and the soft, trembling whimpers of the scholars. Half a dozen Chitin-Stalker carcasses littered the blood-stained stone, their obsidian shells gleaming under the pale crystal sconces.
Evander lowered his notched sword, wiping sweat and black blood from his forehead as he surveyed the carnage. He shot a sharp, assessing look toward the drow, who stood completely composed, his breath steady and his twin blades spotless.
"Well fought, scout," Evander grunted, his tone carrying a new layer of deep, hard-earned respect. "If you hadn't anticipated the alarm trigger, half those scholars would be digested bone right now."
Zev sheathed his mithril sabers with a quiet, metallic click. He cast a cold, unimpressed glance at the academics, who were huddled frantically against the stone sarcophagus, finally realizing how close they had just come to dying for a forgotten history.
"They wanted a ruin," Zev said flatly, pulling his storm-grey hood back over his silver hair. "Now they have it. Let's finish the survey before something larger smells the blood."
