The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 27: Breaking the Blade
The morning mist still clung to the stone walls of the safehouse courtyard when the heavy iron gate rattled open.
Stepping through the archway came the merchant’s son, Julian, flanked by two thick-shouldered personal guards clad in chainmail and heavy breastplates. Julian wore expensive, silk-trimmed traveling leathers, a jeweled-hilt practice rapier strapped to his hip, and an expression of profound annoyance plastered across his youthful face.
As they crossed the threshold, Zevryn stepped out from the shadows of the portico, his pale eyes cutting sharply toward the two guards.
"They stay outside," Zev stated flatly, his voice carrying an absolute, unyielding weight.
The two guards instinctively bristled, resting their hands on the pommels of their broadswords, but Zev’s chilling, predatory gaze pinned them in place.
Julian waved a dismissive hand, eager to get the ordeal over with. "Wait by the lane," he snapped at his men.
The guards exchanged a heavy look, stepping back through the gate as the iron door swung shut with a resounding thud, leaving Julian isolated in the austere courtyard.
Julian took one look around the enclosed stone yard and scoffed, crossing his arms. "My father is paying a fortune for this? It looks like a kennel."
Zev didn't waste breath on a retort. He motioned toward Reniah, who stood quietly near the wooden equipment rack, having neatly arranged several wooden training swords and daggers.
"Before I teach you anything, I need to know your actual skill level," Zev said, his tone cold and level. He picked up a wooden training short sword and tossed it across the flagstones. It clattered near Julian’s boots. "Pick it up."
Julian frowned, looking down at the crude wooden weapon, then back up at the drow. "You want me to spar with a training stick? Where are your weapons? Are you not fighting me yourself?"
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
"You don't earn my blade yet," Zev replied simply. He turned his head toward the back corridor. "Ren. Step forward."
Reniah hesitated for a fraction of a second, then stepped out into the pale sunlight. She wore simple, dark training trousers and a tunic, her frame noticeably smaller and slighter than Julian’s. She held a balanced wooden short sword in her right hand, her posture locked into the clean, steady foundational stance Zev had drilled into her the previous day.
Julian’s jaw dropped, his face flushing crimson with offended pride. He looked from Reniah back to Zev in utter disbelief. "A servant? You expect me, specifically a trained duelist of the upper ward, to spar with your mute servant girl?"
"If you can't bypass her guard, you have no business holding steel," Zev said coldly. "Begin."
Furious and deeply insulted, Julian drew his wooden sword and stepped onto the flagstones. "I'll teach you both some respect," he muttered, gripping the hilt with white knuckles.
Without waiting for a formal salute, Julian charged forward, executing a rapid, flamboyant multi-thrust combination designed to dazzle crowds in elite academies. It was fast, energetic, and completely unpolished.
Reniah did not flinch. Remembering every breath-control lesson and weight-distribution cue Zev had hammered into her, she didn't try to match his raw power. Instead, she slipped backward with fluid footwork, letting Julian's wild overextension spend its own momentum.
Clack!
With a crisp parry, Reniah deflected Julian's heavy strike, stepping smoothly into his blind spot and tapping the flat of her wooden blade directly against his ribs.
Julian stumbled sideways, gasping in shock. "What?!?"
Humiliated, Julian spun around and swung wildly, his form breaking apart under the weight of his anger. Reniah calmly stepped inside his reach, parrying another clumsy blow and sweeping her foot low, catching Julian’s ankle.
Thud.
The wealthy merchant's son hit the cold stone hard, kicking up dust as his wooden sword bounced out of his grip. He lay flat on his back, staring up at the sky, chest heaving and utterly speechless as Reniah lowered her blade and stepped back to her original position.
From the shadows, Zevryn watched the entire exchange, mentally cataloging every flaw in Julian's footwork, his explosive temper, and his complete lack of defensive recovery.
Zev stepped forward, looking down at the panting, disgraced young man on the ground.
"Your stance is theater, your footwork is panic, and your anger makes you blind," Zev said, his voice cutting through the quiet courtyard like ice. He extended a hand, not to help Julian up, but to gesture toward the equipment rack. "Get up. Now that I know your baseline, we can start fixing how terrible you actually are."
