Chapter 28: Iron and Discipline
Over the span of fourteen grueling days, the enclosed stone courtyard of the safehouse transformed into a crucible.
Julian, the arrogant young scion of the shipping merchant, no longer arrived with complaints or theatrical posturing. After being cleanly dismantled by a fourteen-year-old servant girl on his first day, the boy’s pride had suffered a fatal, much-needed wound. In its place, a fierce, quiet discipline began to take root.
Zevryn spared no mercy. Every morning at dawn, Julian was subjected to relentless repetitions of footwork drills, balance checks, and defensive parries. When Julian grew frustrated, Zev offered no comforting words, specifically only a cold, unblinking reminder of what waited for him in the blood-soaked borderlands.
Reniah, meanwhile, acted as both a silent sparring partner and a living testament to the efficacy of Zevryn’s instruction. Working side-by-side with the young master, her own form grew sharper, her movements more lethal and controlled under Zevryn's watchful eye. By the twelfth day, Julian managed to land a clean, deliberate strike against Reniah's wooden guard, a minor victory that earned him his first genuine nod of approval from the drow instructor.
"You're finally fighting like a survivor instead of a duelist," Zev told him as Julian slumped against the courtyard wall, drenched in sweat and gasping for air. "Keep that rhythm."

As the fourteenth day drew to a close, the two-week countdown reached its end.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of his secure chamber, Zevryn conducted his final operational check. Every piece of equipment was inspected down to the last millimeter.
He slid his arms into the newly forged custom ranger armor crafted by Master Curnow. The alchemically treated shadow-hide outer shell swallowed the flickering candlelight, completely deadening all sound against movement, while the inner web of micro-linked mithril mesh offered feather-light, impenetrable defense. Across his belt, his twin mithril sabers rested securely in their sheaths, balanced to a hair's breadth.
Reaching into his bronze spatial storage ring, he mentally verified his inventory. Three crystal phials of refined, pine-scented Chitin-Stalker venom were safely nested upon an internal dimensional shelf. The two remaining phials were loaded directly into the spring-loaded gauntlet mechanism mounted on his left armguard, primed to fire poisoned needle darts at a subtle flick of his wrist. A pouch of salvaged mana cores, emergency rations, and a compact climbing kit rounded out his provisions.
His preparation was absolute. Cassandra and her conspirators believed they had hired an expendable sword-for-hire to spring the deadly wards of the true Iron Spine tomb, planning to leave him as cold meat in the dark. They had no idea they were walking into a trap of the drow's own making.
At the stroke of evening, Zevryn pulled his heavy storm-grey hood low over his silver hair, stepped out into the crisp night air, and locked the iron gate behind him.
The western gates of the maritime republic loomed ahead, where Cassandra and her four-person operative team were already waiting in the shadows.
It was time to claim the true tomb.
