The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]
Chapter 8: Collars and Claws
Three days of climbing carried Zevryn deep into the Northwest Iron Spine, that brutal labyrinth of sheer cliffs, frozen passes, and hanging glaciers where normal humans either froze solid or slipped to their deaths. To Zevryn, whose youth had been spent scaling the lightless, vertical abysses of the deep subterranean realms, the jagged limestone walls and freezing gales were merely second nature. He moved through the high-altitude wilderness with the effortless, tireless rhythm of a ghost haunting a tomb.
On the morning of the fourth day, high within a narrow, wind-scoured pass choked with old snow, he found the sign.
Zev crouched beside a patch of trampled frost, his gloved fingers brushing the hardened earth. According to the guild contract’s dossier, the target was vaguely described as a monstrous mountain lion or some scaled predator of the upper crags that had gone rogue. But as Zev studied the tracks, his brows furrowed beneath his grey cowl.
The impressions weren't the fluid, natural pads of a wild mountain cat. The stride was too heavy, the weight distribution wrong, and the claw-marks dragged in a mechanical, unnatural cadence that bespoke training and cruel confinement rather than feral instinct. Something was deeply wrong with the guild's intelligence.
Pulling his storm-grey cloak tight to invoke the low-grade illusion weave of the fabric, Zev melted back against a weather-sculpted granite slab overlooking the switchback trail. He settled into statuesque stillness, his breathing dropping to a slow, imperceptible crawl as he waited.
Hours passed. The sun crested the jagged peaks, casting long, bruised shadows across the ravine before the silence of the pass was broken by the rhythmic crunch of iron-rimmed wheels against gravel.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
Below him, two heavily laden trader carts crept slowly around the rocky bend, escorted by four weary guards holding notched spears and shivering miserably in their boiled-leather jerkins. Zev rested a hand on the grip of his composite warbow, his eyes narrowing as he tracked the high ledges, waiting for the legendary beast of the foothills to spring from the rocks.
Instead, the trap sprang from the ground.
Shadows erupted from the boulder-strewn gullies flanking the road. They weren't solitary hunters, but a coordinated pack of rough-spun mountain bandits, and they weren't fighting alone.
With a deafening roar that shook the loose shale from the canyon walls, a massive shape lunged from the rocks straight into the middle of the caravan guards. It tore through a guard's heavy wooden shield like dry parchment, sending splinters and blood flying into the crisp air.
Zev’s gaze locked onto the creature, and his breath hitched.
It was a magnificent, terrifying beast, a massive black tiger, its ink-dark fur swallowing the pale mountain light, muscles rippling beneath its hide with lethal power. But as it pinned a screaming guard to the dirt, the moonlight caught a harsh, ugly glint of metal around its thick, muscular neck. A heavy, rusted iron collar. A slave collar, crudely forged and locked tight with heavy rivets, fitted with a broken chain trailing in the dust.
At the sight of the iron band biting into the magnificent creature's flesh, a cold, suffocating wave of pure, unadulterated fury boiled up from the deepest, darkest vaults of Zevryn’s soul. In the lightless dungeons of his subterranean homeland, bondage, chains, and collars were the vile instruments of tyrants and slavers. Seeing a proud, apex predator broken, collared, and weaponized by a gang of miserable surface scavengers struck a raw, merciless nerve.
The bandits cheered as the beast stood over its kill, raising crude whips to drive it toward the second cart.
Zev slowly unslung his composite warbow, his pale eyes burning with cold, lethal promise. The contract had just changed.
