From his concealed perch high in the sweeping branches of an ancient frost-pine, Zevryn surveyed the ravine with cold, surgical detachment. Below him, scattered across the rocky switchback, twenty armed bandits milled about in chaotic celebration of the ambush. They thought they held the pass. They were dead wrong.

Zev drew his composite warbow, nocked a heavy iron-tipped shaft, and drew the string back to his cheek. With absolute silence, he loosed.

The arrow hissed through the frigid mountain air, sinking deep into the thigh of the bandit leader. The man shrieked, collapsing into the dirt and pinning himself hard against a fallen log.

Before the rest of the gang could even register the sound, Zev melted from the branch, shifting his position like smoke through the upper canopy. His preternatural senses prickled, as a faint shift in the air currents betrayed two hidden archers tucked away on a high rock shelf.

Zev smoothly redirected his aim. A low thwack echoed off the stone as his first arrow took the left archer clean through the throat, dropping him off the ledge. Instantly pivoting, Zev drew again; the second arrow caught the remaining archer in the chest, sending him tumbling backward into the brush.

Threats above eliminated. Zev slung his bow across his shoulder, drew his black mithril saber and short saber, and dropped silently into the thick of the remaining nineteen bandits and the massive collared beast.

The black tiger, maddened by the pain of its crude iron collar and the chaos of the ambush, caught Zev's scent and spun around with a thunderous roar. It pounced directly at Zev's position, a mountain of midnight muscle and razor-sharp claws lunging for his throat.

With effortless, fluid grace, Zev sidestepped a hair’s breadth to the left, letting the beast's momentum carry it past him into empty air.

Without breaking his stride, Zev dashed straight past the snarling tiger toward the screaming leader thrashing in the dirt. Dropping to one knee, Zev sliced open the leader’s belt and yanked away a heavy, runic brass medallion, which served as the command talisman used to shock and subjugate the beast.

Channeling his intent through the artifact, Zev snapped a harsh, authoritative command in a guttural beast-tongue.

The black tiger froze mid-stride, its massive paws skidding across the shale. Its golden eyes locked onto the pulsing talisman in Zev’s hand.

"Kill them," Zev commanded, pointing his blade toward the gang.

The beast wheeled around with a primal, earth-shaking howl, charging directly into the nearest cluster of terrified bandits. Ten of the outlaws panicked and broke rank, sprinting blindly into the thick timber with the enraged tiger hot on their heels, harried mercilessly by the two surviving caravan guards who rallied with desperate, vengeful steel.

That left nine bandits trapped in the clearing with Zevryn.

He unleashed his signature blade art: Drifting Moon.

It was a nightmare made visible, a dance of impossible speed and absolute lethality. Zev moved through their ranks like a phantom storm, his black mithril saber and short saber flickering in the pale light. Limbs were severed with surgical neatness, throats opened in synchronized crimson sprays, and armor and bone parted alike under the bite of enchanted steel.

In less time than it took to draw a breath, eight bodies hit the crimson snow.

Only one bandit remained. The man dropped his rusted cutlass, falling hard to his knees in the blood-soaked slush, trembling uncontrollably and begging for his life.

Zev walked up to him, his expression a mask of chilling indifference. A single, fluid sweep of his blade ended the plea permanently. The severed head bounced twice in the snow.

Silence descended upon the pass, broken only by the heavy panting of the wind. A moment later, the brush snapped, and the black tiger trotted back into the clearing. Its ink-dark fur was dusted with snow and flecked with the red spray of combat, but it had no interest in feeding on the fallen men. It left their flesh untouched, its wrath satisfied purely by slaughter.

It stopped directly in front of Zev, chest heaving, its golden eyes staring down the drow.

"Sit," Zev commanded quietly, holding up the talisman.

The colossal beast instantly dropped its heavy rear onto the frozen earth, remaining rigidly still. Zev stepped up close, hooked his fingers beneath the biting, rusted iron slave collar, and drew his short saber. With a sharp, controlled flick of mithril, he sheared the heavy rivets.

The cursed iron band fell away, crashing heavily into the dirt. The beast’s neck was freed of its torment.

Zev sheathed his blade, looking down at the magnificent predator with unyielding eyes. "Shed their blood, tear their dens to ash," Zev told it quietly, "and let no master ever put iron on your neck again."

The tiger tilted its massive, scarred head, sniffing the air as it memorized Zev’s scent. Suddenly, it leaned forward and swept a warm, massive tongue straight across Zev’s pale cheek.

Zev recoiled with a rare flash of sheer, unadulterated disgust, scrubbing the sticky feline saliva off his face with his sleeve. "Vile creature," he muttered.

With a final, knowing nod, the black tiger turned and vanished completely into the deep shadows of the treeline.

With the carnage settled, Zev casually decapitated the bandit leader, wrapping the gory trophy securely inside the dead man’s own fur-lined cloak. He moved from corpse to corpse, rapidly stripping away heavy coin pouches while deliberately ignoring the rusted weapons and worthless trinkets.

I really need to acquire a spatial storage ring, Zev mused inwardly, adjusting the awkward weight of the loot and the wrapped head. Carrying severed bounty by hand is barbarically inefficient.

From down the trail, the surviving merchant rushed over, trembling with awe and sheer relief, pressing a heavy leather purse into Zev’s hands. Zev merely nodded in silent thanks, not bothering to count the coins.

The merchant, eyes wide with newfound reverence, reached into his coat and produced a polished brass token bearing an intricate trading-house seal.

"Master, if ever you trade in the southern markets or visit any accredited bazaar, show them this token. It grants preferential rates. The lowest possible price for any inventory."

Zev caught the weight of the token, recognizing its genuine value instantly. "My thanks. Continue your journey."

The merchant bowed low. "May the god of fortune bless your hunts."

Gathering his two remaining guards and the undamaged cart, the merchant hurried down the winding mountain trail, leaving Zevryn alone with the wind, his new cloak, and the long road ahead.
