The Entire Mountain Is My Hunting Ground
Chapter 625 Wiping Out the Jackal Pack in One Battle
Zhao Jun knew wolves had a habit of eating the corpses of their own kind, but at least those were already dead. This jackal, he feared, had been eaten alive by the others.
‘Aren’t jackals supposed to be extremely loyal to their pack? This one was injured. Weren’t the others supposed to leave no one behind?’
This was all stuff Zhao Jun had learned from watching *Animal World* in his past life, but reality was proving to be quite different.
If Zhao Jun had known this was going to happen, he wouldn’t have taken that nap.
Just then, Black Tiger tilted its head and looked at Zhao Jun. Seeing the dog wagging its tail, Zhao Jun decided to give it another try.
“Go on, get ’em!” Zhao Jun waved his hand forward. Black Tiger spun around, coiled its body, and launched itself forward, shooting off like an arrow.
The moment Black Tiger took off, it let out a series of barks to rally the Dog Gang.
Today was no exception. At Black Tiger’s call, Big Fatty and Flower Cat immediately followed.
That left White Dragon. It hesitated for a moment, but seeing the others run off, it too gave chase.
With his rifle on his back, Zhao Jun hurried to keep up. He knew he probably had one more chance, and he had to kill as many of those vicious, cunning bastards as he could.
And so, Zhao Jun followed the Dog Gang, chasing them for nearly three miles as the path led them higher and higher into the mountains.
It was past two in the afternoon when the four jackals finally stopped running.
For one, they hadn’t eaten anything since morning.
Then, out of desperation, they had been forced to eat one of their own injured companions alive. But in their haste, they didn’t have time to gnaw through bone, so they could only tear at the soft parts—the belly, the hindquarters, the organs.
For another, just over the next ridge was Jumping Stone Pond, their lair. And in that lair were several cubs.
The Jackal King knew it couldn’t lead the dogs to its lair, so it prepared to make a final stand right here.
It was jackal instinct not to rely on ambushes. For a direct confrontation, they preferred a sparse wood like a Qingtang Forest, where fewer trees would obstruct them and they could take full advantage of their running and leaping abilities.
As it happened, this spot on Shan Erlie had sparse trees and gentle slopes. The Jackal King let out a few sharp cries, and the other three jackals quickly gathered around it.
They had started the morning with eight. Now, including itself, only half remained. The Jackal King was furious.
“ARF, ARF…” Just then, Black Tiger arrived with the Dog Gang.
Four dogs and four jackals faced off once more. They postured, growling and snarling, advancing and retreating in a tense dance meant to build their own courage and intimidate the enemy.
This was the innate instinct of jackals, wolves, and most predators. The presence of a hunter trailing them wouldn’t change that.
But this ritual was buying Zhao Jun time.
Zhao Jun had fallen nearly a mile and a half behind the Dog Gang, and he was running at his absolute limit.
He was only able to keep up thanks to Black Tiger’s constant barking, which guided him. Relying on his intimate knowledge of these mountains, he pushed onward relentlessly.
The Jackal King’s gaze was ice-cold as it stared at Black Tiger. It could tell this big black dog was the leader of the enemy pack.
The Jackal King barked twice, challenging Black Tiger to a one-on-one duel.
But Black Tiger ignored it completely, continuing its deep-throated snarls.
Black Tiger didn’t take the bait, but White Dragon couldn’t restrain itself and charged the Jackal King.
As White Dragon closed in, the Jackal King swiftly twisted its body to dodge the attack, then spun around and lunged for the dog’s thigh.
The Jackal King was incredibly fast. White Dragon’s pounce missed, and before it could react, the jackal was on it.
Just as the Jackal King’s sharp teeth were about to sink into White Dragon’s flesh, with the dog unable to dodge in time, the jackal let out a pained shriek.
It was Black Tiger. The cunning dog had launched a sneak attack. While the Jackal King was focused on White Dragon, Black Tiger had leaped forward and clamped its jaws onto the back of the jackal’s neck.
A duel between leaders might be how two Jackal Packs settled disputes.
But Black Tiger was a dog—a pragmatic one at that.
Besides, Black Tiger had never agreed to a duel in the first place.
The moment Black Tiger moved, Big Fatty and Flower Cat swarmed in, taking advantage of the opening while their leader had the Jackal King by the neck.
Big Fatty, who usually went straight for the head, couldn’t get a clear shot, so it lunged for the Jackal King’s exposed white belly instead.
The Jackal King struggled, letting out a low growl. It kicked out a leg instinctively, and Big Fatty immediately latched onto its paw.
The vicious bite nearly tore the Jackal King’s paw clean off.
From the moment the Jackal King issued its challenge to the moment it was grievously wounded, not even a minute had passed.
Finally, the Jackal King’s underlings reacted, shrieking as they charged at Black Tiger.
Black Tiger released its hold on the Jackal King and dodged to the side.
Just then, the pack’s only remaining female jackal reached the Jackal King and lunged, jaws open, aiming to rip out Big Fatty’s throat.
At the same time, White Dragon and Flower Cat engaged the other two male jackals in close-quarters combat.
Having been bitten on the neck, the Jackal King had been all but immobilized. The moment Black Tiger let go, it immediately spun its head and began tearing viciously at Big Fatty.
It was trying to tie up Big Fatty, creating a chance for the female to land a killing blow.
But it seemed to have forgotten about the black dog that was even more cunning than itself. Black Tiger slammed into the female jackal. The thirty-pound she-jackal was no match for the hundred-plus-pound dog. It was sent flying, hit the ground, and rolled with the impact, scrambling quickly back to its feet.
But the moment the she-jackal got up, Black Tiger was already on it. It seemed easier to bully this smaller female than the Jackal King. Black Tiger clamped its jaws on the back of her neck and violently flung her aside.
