The Fantastic Little Farmer
Chapter 61: Ouyang Kunpeng’s Envoy
Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Ouyang Kunpeng’s Envoy
Seeing that someone had arrived, Gu Ming’er didn’t say anything more. She adjusted her glasses and hair, lifted her chin haughtily, packed her bag, and walked outside.
Then, she saw Zhang Yun grab two more cups!
Gu Ming’er was furious. "I don’t need a sip of your water, but you didn’t even offer or show any basic hospitality. That’s just too rude! You don’t even know who is outside yet, and you’re already getting cups! Isn’t he just putting on an act for me? You already basically kicked me out, so why pretend to be refined and subtle? I’m not going to leave in a hurry then!" she thought.
Thinking of this, Gu Ming’er intentionally dawdled. She put the letter of authorization away and took it out again, as if checking to see if she had dropped anything.
"Zhang Yun!"
Outside, the car parked and the engine shut off. The sound of car doors opening and someone shouting carried over, accompanied by the bustling noise of more people gathering to watch.
Gu Ming’er had already reached the door, dragging her feet and refusing to leave. Feeling a bit curious, she turned sideways to peek out. Her car was parked on the road outside the yard, making it inconvenient for the newly arrived vehicle, which had parked right at the yard’s entrance. Just a quick glance revealed it was a Mercedes-Benz.
Gu Ming’er was a little surprised. "Does a guy like Zhang Yun really have a friend who drives a Benz? Is that balance of over a million yuan he showed earlier just him laundering money for someone else?" she wondered.
An old man and a middle-aged man stepped out of the car, while the driver went to open the trunk. This combination of people was a bit strange, making Gu Ming’er step back inside a few paces. Since she had already lost face anyway, she decided she might as well stick around and watch the drama unfold.
In the city, a closed door didn’t mean no one was home; in the countryside, an open door didn’t necessarily mean someone was home. Zhang Lifeng understood this and called out again, "Is Zhang Yun home?"
"He is! He just got back," someone answered.
"But there’s a pretty girl looking for him right now. Don’t be a buzzkill, old man!" one of the idle onlookers jeered, instantly sparking a roar of laughter. Earlier, they had gathered because of the "pretty girl," but now they were even more interested in the "Benz."
"Zhang Yun! You have more guests looking for you!"
"Did you boil water? Do you want me to bring over a kettle of boiling water for you?"
"We brought some tea leaves!"
A clever villager immediately found an excuse and led Zhang Lifeng and the others inside, using it as an open invitation to watch the show.
"I’m coming," Zhang Yun greeted them leisurely as he saw them reach the door.
"Mr. Dong is very busy, so we hurried over. We’re a bit earlier than the agreed time, but luckily you were home." Zhang Lifeng didn’t mind Zhang Yun’s attitude. He explained the situation first, then led the middle-aged man into the house. Not knowing Gu Ming’er’s identity, he offered her a polite smile as well.
Gu Ming’er felt much better now! Although she felt she hadn’t received the "beautiful woman treatment," Zhang Yun had the same attitude toward this elder who had just arrived. That meant he treated everyone equally and wasn’t specifically targeting her. However, she didn’t respond to Zhang Lifeng this time because the mention of "Mr. Dong" had startled her.
"Are you... the great lawyer Dong Junwu?" Gu Ming’er couldn’t help but ask softly.
The middle-aged man who had come in with Zhang Lifeng had just quickly scanned the room, his gaze landing on Zhang Yun. He was about to speak when he heard her words and looked slightly surprised.
"That’s right. I am Dong Junwu. I didn’t expect anyone here to recognize me. Mr. Zhang Yun is truly no ordinary person!" Dong Junwu smiled at her politely, exchanging pleasantries.
Gu Ming’er felt a bit awkward. "I’m the one who recognized you, so why did you conclude that Zhang Yun is extraordinary?" she wondered. However, this man was a titan in the legal field. Back when she was studying law, his name was like thunder to her ears. She used to fantasize about chatting and laughing with these big shots at industry events one day, but she never imagined she would meet one in the countryside. If the old man hadn’t mentioned "Mr. Dong," she might have thought he looked somewhat familiar, but she never would have connected the dots.
"H-hello, my name is Gu Ming’er."
Zhang Yun was a bit annoyed that the old man had brought someone over early. At this hour, didn’t that mean he’d have to treat them to lunch? But seeing Gu Ming’er’s starstruck rookie attitude toward the big shot piqued his interest!
Zhang Yun smiled faintly, adopting the posture of an enigmatic master. "I knew you were arriving, so the tea is freshly brewed. Please, have a seat." Then, he called out to the people outside, "Do you want to come in for some tea?"
"No, no, you guys talk business!" The men, women, and children outside all possessed enough common sense to decline. However, they didn’t leave. They stood in the yard watching the spectacle, either murmuring among themselves or discussing the wall around Zhang Yun’s house.
Zhang Lifeng warmly invited Dong Junwu to sit down.
"I am Dong Junwu, and I’m here on behalf of Mr. Ouyang," Dong Junwu introduced himself again.
"A pleasure to meet you." Zhang Yun nodded with a smile and called out, "Xiaoming, aren’t you going to come over and pour tea for our two seniors?"
Gu Ming’er glared at him. "Xiaoming? Who do you think you are, calling me Xiaoming? No! This guy is probably treating me like some errand boy named ’Xiaoming’! I’m not serving anyone! I’m not your employee!" she thought furiously, tossing her head.
But when she looked at Dong Junwu, her newly flared arrogance instantly deflated. Gu Ming’er was just starting out in her career. Who knew how long it would be before she had another chance to interact with an industry giant? Forget about clinging to his coattails; just drinking tea with him would be a great talking point. If she really left a good impression, it would be a form of networking. Perhaps he might even help her out someday.
"Oh!" The beautiful lawyer placed her bag on a chair and hurried over to pour tea for them.
The villagers watching the show from outside all clicked their tongues in wonder. Could this pretty girl who drove over be Zhang Yun’s girlfriend? Why else would she obediently serve tea and pour water?
"Thank you." Dong Junwu took a symbolic sip of tea.
Zhang Lifeng took the initiative to speak. "Mr. Dong came here in person on behalf of Mr. Ouyang. His time is precious, so let’s get straight to business, shall we?"
If this were the first day he had met Zhang Yun, Zhang Lifeng would have considered a million-yuan transaction a major event. But yesterday, the young man had casually produced two century-old roots of old mountain ginseng, making this million-yuan deal seem like nothing in comparison. He also felt that Gu Ming’er was out of place here, but since she recognized Dong Junwu as a lawyer and dressed like one herself, she was probably a lawyer too. Perhaps she was a familiar lawyer Zhang Yun had called over in advance?
The old man was deeply impressed! He had assumed Ouyang Kunpeng would just send someone over randomly, yet Zhang Yun had actually guessed a top lawyer would arrive and made preparations in advance.
Zhang Yun clapped his hands. "Great! Let’s wrap this up early so you guys can head back to the county town for lunch. I don’t have anything good to serve here anyway."
Zhang Lifeng and Gu Ming’er inwardly rolled their eyes in unison. "Is lunch really the most important thing to you?" they thought.
"Mr. Zhang is truly a straightforward person!" Dong Junwu praised with a smile, then called out, "Tom!"
The tall, young driver was already waiting at the door, carrying two items. Zhang Lifeng walked over first and took a bag from him.
Tom carried a leather suitcase and placed it directly on the table. Uttering, "Excuse me," he opened the suitcase right in front of them.
Holy crap! When the suitcase opened, Zhang Yun almost cried out!
Zhang Lifeng was also dumbfounded, not expecting such a scene.
Gu Ming’er, who was entirely out of the loop and caught off guard, was so shocked that she gasped, "A whole suitcase of money!"
