Chapter 210: Chapter 210: Nick Was Made to Lose His Confidence by Liang He
When Liang He followed the Mojin King Tiger into the dormitory to check the situation, she was surprised to find all her furry companions gathered around the large bed. Instinctively assuming that something had gone wrong with the Iron-eating Beast, Liang He hurried forward to figure out what was going on. However, she froze in her tracks the moment she locked eyes with a pair of dark, round eyes.
"Liang He, what’s wrong? What happened?" Hoder and the others who had followed her inside grew worried when they saw her freeze, assuming the Iron-eating Beast’s condition had deteriorated.
"Jiao Jiao?" Snapping back to her senses, Liang He didn’t have time to answer them. Instead, she scrambled onto the large bed, kneeling beside the Iron-eating Beast and staring at him nervously.
"Mhm..." Perhaps because he had just woken up, the Iron-eating Beast was still a little groggy, only instinctively responding to Liang He. Hearing his faint voice, however, Liang He smiled with sheer joy. She knew that the Iron-eating Beast had finally recovered.
"Xuan Jiao is awake?!" Hoder leaned in with astonishment, not quite understanding what was going on. The antidote was clearly still in the experimental stage and hadn’t been administered to the Iron-eating Beast yet. But here he was, waking up early. Could it be because of the unique constitution of an SSS-level Beastman? But no one had ever heard of a Beastman being able to detoxify themselves!
"So... this is what Cedriel was trying to tell us earlier, right?" Silver Feather was probably the calmest person in the room. While Liang He was thrilled by the Iron-eating Beast’s awakening, Hoder and Silver Shuttle were both happy and extremely curious. Silver Feather, on the other hand, had no deep connection with the Iron-eating Beast. Moreover, he had already accepted that Liang He’s existence would always be linked to all sorts of miracles, so his expression remained unfazed.
"AWOO~" Hearing his name mentioned, the Mojin King Tiger let out a soft response, though his golden tiger eyes remained fixed on Liang He. Seeing the slight moisture at the corners of her eyes, he felt a pang of jealousy but was also genuinely happy for her. He could sense that Liang He had been suppressing her emotions and forcing herself to stay calm. In truth, she had been agonizing and blaming herself over the Iron-eating Beast’s poisoned, comatose state.
"Little He, since Xuan Jiao is awake, shouldn’t we have Doctor Xu and the others come over for a check-up?" Silver Feather gently reminded her. Although it was wonderful news that the Iron-eating Beast had woken up early, it was best to do a thorough medical examination to ensure there were no hidden issues.
"Yes, you’re right." Liang He gently stroked the Iron-eating Beast’s head. She was no longer forcing a smile; her happiness was now absolute and real. "Hoder, could you please let Brother Hao know and ask Xu Yi to come back for a bit?"
"Okay." Even if Liang He hadn’t said anything, Hoder would have reported the situation to Huo An anyway.
When Xu Yi learned from Huo An that the Iron-eating Beast had already woken up, Lan Zhuo happened to be nearby. Instantly, his internal alarm bells started ringing.
"He woke up? Did Liang He feed him some kind of medicine again?" Ever since he discovered that the pill which caused the Silver Moon Wolf’s mutation was developed by Liang He, Lan Zhuo had formed a subconscious habit: whenever something unscientific happened, he would immediately link it to her. So, upon hearing that the Iron-eating Beast had successfully woken up without taking the antidote, his thoughts naturally jumped to Liang He.
"I remember you guys saying earlier that Xuan Jiao’s poisoning symptoms had been continuously alleviating. Perhaps Liang He had already fed him a pill back then."
It had to be said that Lan Zhuo had hit the nail on the head. However, Huo An and Xu Yi didn’t agree with him. Instead, they quickly found plenty of excuses to convince Lan Zhuo not to overthink things.
"Xuan Jiao is the only SSS-level Beastman who got poisoned. He can’t be compared to ordinary animals in the first place," Huo An said. He didn’t deny that Liang He might have had a hand in it, but she had previously stated that she couldn’t provide the formula for the pills. Therefore, he shouldn’t let her draw any more public attention. If certain people set their sights on her and forced her to hand over the formula, it would spell trouble.
"Exactly. Furthermore, we all know that poisoned animals have the potential to mutate into Fierce Beasts, and the Fierce Beast virus has no effect on Beastmen. Perhaps that is why Xuan Jiao was able to detoxify," Xu Yi chimed in, supporting Huo An and even offering further explanation.
"You make a good point. Maybe I’m just overthinking it." Lan Zhuo, who always adhered to strict scientific principles, finally changed his tune after hearing their reasoning. Still, a seed of doubt lingered in his heart.
"Alright, let’s not discuss this for now. Xu Yi, you need to head back to the Seventh Service Area immediately to give Xuan Jiao a check-up." Now that Xuan Jiao was awake, they could finally provide an answer regarding some of the comments targeting Liang He on the Star Network. As for the other poisoned and comatose animals, that was the reserve’s problem. They didn’t need to worry too much about it.
"Alright, I’ll set off right now."
Lan Zhuo initially wanted to volunteer to go in Xu Yi’s place so he could verify his own suspicions. However, remembering the animals still under observation after taking the antidote, he had to banish the thought. No matter what, as a doctor—even a veterinarian—he had to prioritize the lives of the animals in this situation.
Meanwhile, the Rebel Army, entirely unaware that Xuan Jiao had already woken up, continued to deploy their paid trolls to drive the narrative, leading netizens to condemn Liang He for her alleged dereliction of duty.
[It’s been so long since the incident happened, and the Fur Raising Officer hasn’t stepped forward to respond at all. Is she feeling guilty?]
[Even if Liang He donated most of her income to the rescue station, that doesn’t cover up her negligence that led to the Iron-eating Beast falling into a coma, right?]
[One thing has nothing to do with the other! As the Iron-eating Beast’s Breeder, Liang He owes us a reasonable explanation!]
Following the Black Wizard’s orders, the paid trolls hired by the Rebel Army shifted their angle of attack. Instead of accusing Liang He of using animals for profit, they pivoted back to her dereliction of duty, which allegedly caused the Iron-eating Beast to be poisoned and fall into a coma. Since the public outcry began, Liang He hadn’t issued any response. This silence was enough to convince netizens that the rumors weren’t entirely baseless, making their demands for answers seem perfectly justified.
After all, every SSS-level Beastman was a key protection target for the Federation. This time it was the Iron-eating Beast getting poisoned, but what about next time? Could their most revered Marshal, Commander, or even the Imperial Admiral and the Crown Prince fall victim to such treachery?
"Black Wizard, nothing will go wrong this time, right?" General Nick had been messed with so much that he was starting to lose his confidence. He was terrified that Liang He’s side would pull off another sudden reversal.
"Didn’t your subordinates say so? The antidote provided by the Animal Research Institute will only catalyze the poison, transforming it into the Fierce Beast virus." The Black Wizard appeared highly displeased with Nick’s skepticism, clearly brimming with confidence in his own research. Hearing this, Nick said nothing more. After all, the news of massive numbers of Fierce Beasts appearing in the reserve was entirely true. There was no doubt about that.
"Indeed. If even the Animal Research Institute can’t develop a true antidote, I refuse to believe anyone else can save those beasts." Nick sneered. He leaned back casually on the sofa, holding up a glass of red wine in a posture of premature celebration.
The Black Wizard wasn’t particularly interested in wine. Instead, he held a cigar, ordering the white-robed boy standing behind him to light it before taking a deep drag. His long hours of research made him thoroughly addicted to this moment of relaxation. He savored the feeling of having people playing right into the palm of his hand. So what if Liang He was formidable? In the end, wasn’t she just running around in circles, completely at his mercy? Hah!
"General, Lord Black Wizard, bad news!"
