Chapter 1261: Chapter 849: New Blood (Part 2)
This is no longer the bustling, noisy trade port where people of all kinds are only rushing for their livelihoods; it is a temporarily constructed, efficiently running war fortress filled with a solemn determination.
Ships bearing the insignia of the Night Watcher enter and exit in an orderly manner, serving as critical nodes in maintaining this lifeline.
Various supplies still need to be rapidly transported here, and some commercial activities still must be carried out.
Especially after the nearby rift has been blocked.
"Gather!"
The instructor’s familiar and loud voice pierced through the port’s clamor.
New recruits dressed in uniform leather armor quickly assembled into a formation.
Adam noticed his classmates around him—some like Tokke unable to contain their excitement, some like Eva seriously documenting everything, and a few with slightly pale faces, tightly gripping their weapons with trembling hands, but all eyes were invariably directed towards the purple sky.
They knew why they came.
The desire to become a true force safeguarding the world was more or less visible on the youthful faces of each recruit.
They may have different personalities, different thoughts, but their actions were uniform, and their goals were the same.
Without such thoughts and capabilities, they wouldn’t be standing here.
Seeing the expressions of these new recruits, the instructor nodded with great satisfaction.
That’s the spirit.
Every person here has been carefully selected; each will become the backbone of the Night Watcher.
Yet, battle is inevitable if one wishes to become the backbone.
Memory, temperament, will all require honing.
Besides this, the busy people inside the port would occasionally turn their gaze over.
Of course, they can see that these recruits are members of the Night Watcher.
If this were the past, these looks would carry different emotions, but now most of the gazes express a single sentiment.
That is admiration, and also respect.
The actions of the Night Watcher these days, their support, have deeply shaken them.
For most people, the deeds of the Night Watcher were tales told from afar, stories from the tavern Bards’ mouths.
Many people were praising the so-called Night Watcher.
Likewise, many were influenced by the Night Watcher and despised them.
But no matter what, the group originally existing only in the stories now stands in reality.
And they fight much as the legends said.
They are not lords nor vile soldiers, but warriors guarding the world.
"Mount your steed!"
The instructor shouted loudly.
The recruits immediately took action.
They mounted special Land Birds, their saddles fitted with lightweight yet solid forest armors.
"Follow me, let’s go!"
With the instructor’s order, the bird-riding group sped along the cleared wide passageway.
Scenes on both sides of the road quickly receded: damaged but cleaned and reinforced houses, hastily constructed temporary shelters, an old soldier reinforcement squad rushing by...
Clearly, those Void Creatures emerging from the rift had indeed impacted this port city.
But now the purple glow can no longer be seen within the city. This indicates that Void Creatures have long been driven out.
A group of new recruits riding the Land Birds, racing along the road.
Yet, they did not advance for long.
Soon, that grand fortress line loomed into view—it was not an ancient giant city barrier, but a ’fresh’ aura of steel creation.
Within days, a crude fortress constructed with Folding Defense Wall modules at its core, supported by emergency Alchemy Laboratory technology, stood tall.
Its core was that towering metallic enclosure, over ten to twenty meters high, glowing faintly with rune lights.
The gigantic wall securely confines the evil existence of the Void, ensuring that a rift opened here cannot affect the surrounding, let alone the world.
Behind the wall lies the rift area, where the sky is enveloped by an extremely ominous, viscous purple glow, almost devoid of clouds, with purple lightning silently writhing and flickering within, staining everything with an eerie halo.
An invisible pressure permeated, making the air feel solidified.
"Hiss..." Pokanasha involuntarily took a cold breath; even having experienced the void aura in simulation environments, the real pollution field’s icy silence and soul-level oppression provided a brand-new impact.
Adam’s blood energy within slightly fluctuated, a natural repulsion to foreign energies.
The recruits’ camp was set in a relatively flat depression behind the gigantic defense wall.
Upon reaching the camp entrance, the instructor reined in the Land Bird, signaling everyone to dismount.
He walked to the front of the formation, scanning the young and complex faces.
"Little ones, this is the frontline! A ’relatively stable’ frontline!" The instructor’s voice was loud, overshadowing the continuous low growls and energy blasts seeping through the wall’s other side, alongside the clanking of weapon clashes.
"Look closely! Behind those tall walls are the ghostly things crawling out from otherworldly fragments! They’re gnawing at our world!"
He pointed to the giant Folding Defense Wall: "Because this place is a crucial node, the navigation is smooth, resources come quickly, we have subdued it, preventing it from spiraling out of control like the Iron Ridge Mountains or Liberty City underground."
His gaze swept over Adam’s squad and other students: "Your mission is simple: Feel! Use your eyes to see, your ears to listen, your Magic and Weapons — oh, of course, no real contact is allowed.
"Go experience this genuine ’Void threat’! Those ’training used’ degraded creatures you butchered in the safety zone are completely different from fighting desperately on the real battlefield! Remember your duties—observe, learn, adapt to this pressure!
"Keeping your own little life intact is the priority, this is an order! But also remember why you’re here—not as spectators, but preparing to become true Night Watchers, becoming part of the world’s bulwark in the future!"
The instructor took a deep breath, his voice slightly softened but more profound.
"Fear is normal; seeing comrades fall and feeling pain is instinct. But I hope this fear turns into caution, and this pain becomes strength!
"You are seeds, the future backbone resisting the apocalypse! Lord Kana has secured time for us, now it’s up to all of us to shoulder this burden step by step!"
He finally waved his hand vigorously: "Now, follow me into the camp! Stay alert! Remember my words!"
The instructor turned and led the team through the camp entrance.
Adam followed in the ranks, his gaze first drawn to the coexisting chaos and order within the camp—the giant Alchemy Melting Furnace spewing steam purifying something, the light beam from the Holy Light Purification Tower sweeping over the camp, dispelling the cold.
Exhausted soldiers wrapped in blankets rested in the corners, people came and went before the medical tents, the air was filled with smells of sweat, metal, herbs, and an inescapable... residual chill of energy.
However, the clearest sounds to his ears came from the other side of that towering wall above.
The never-ending, teeth-grinding metal cutting noise, more intense, dense explosion booms, countless sharp eerie shrieks fused together roaring... an unending fight between life and death at the boundary, like an Abyss Grinding Disc spinning endlessly.
Adam involuntarily stopped, tilting his head upwards.
His gaze pierced through the silhouettes of busy scaffolds and pipelines silhouetted against the camp sky, he saw the top of the lofty defense wall.
Behind the battlements, amidst the flickering rune lights, countless blood-soaked figures were densely moving, casting spells, wielding weapons.
The glory of Holy Light spells flared from time to time, scorching enemies whose shapes were indistinct.
Magic projectiles briefly streaked through the viscous purple night sky like meteors, then exploded before the wall, scattering phantom limbs and energy fragments.
The void-breaking sound of Strong Bows and heavy crossbows was clearly audible.
The Night Watchers’ shouts, commanders’ roars, the injured’s muffled groans, the clinking of weapon clashes...
All sounds blended with the heart-pounding screams of the Void Creatures, composing a war symphony of extreme cruelty yet immense resolve, pouring down from above, heavily striking the heart of every freshman stepping into this place.
The true battlefield, thus unfolded without reservation before Adam and his companions.
The endless combat sounds behind the high wall became their first impression imprinted upon stepping into the frontline.
