Chapter 1307: Chapter 871: Inside the Fortress
Abyss.
They continued to move forward.
Following Abis through the massive gate, pieced together from discarded materials.
The scene unfolded dramatically, shocking the delegation of the Blood War Fortress once again.
The first sight greeting them was the dense array of massive pits.
These were not natural depressions, but scars from terrifying energy blasts or giant demons’ trampling, quickly cleared and repaired.
Some pits still held charred bone fragments and metal slag, while a faint remnant of Order’s energy lingered in the air.
This was clearly the core battle zone from the previous intense battle, with cleanup efforts still underway in the corners.
This scene was not unfamiliar, as this was the Blood Battle Battlefield, where such sights were common.
But the problem was this place was too densely packed, like various energies erupted here simultaneously.
Elsewhere, or on the main battlefield of the Blood Battle Battlefield, the expanse stretched to the horizon.
The entire battlefield was vast, so the war-induced terrain didn’t develop easily.
Moreover, the Abyss had a self-healing ability, the land would recover.
So seeing such an exaggerated scene was rare, let alone one that showed no sign of recovery.
For it was an accumulation of wartime changes over the years since Blood Pit Fortress had been established.
This terrain should have been healing, showing some restoration.
For the moment, it was unclear why.
Clinging to the inner side of the first temporary wall was a bustling scene—a massive temporary slaughterhouse/material processing site.
The bodies of demons from the forefront, mostly large High Tier species, were dragged here.
Strong workers, some being robust Beastman Avengers, some mercenaries in simple leather armor, with a few Night Watcher overseers.
They wielded heavy saw axes, Enchantment cutting knives or dissection knives imbued with Holy Fire, skillfully dismantling valuable demon horns, magically textured leather armor, lava cores, and Highly Poisonous Glands.
Swift actions, the scene bloody yet efficient.
Around them, a constant flow of Magic Power cleansing the demon bodies’ dissection, requiring professionals.
Even if you’re a veteran, you may not match a professional dissector’s skill.
Primarily due to the chaotic nature and anatomy of various demon types, some bodies possessing intense contamination and toxicity.
If mishandled, it could cause secondary harm and affect a wide area.
Thus, unless you’re a knowledgeable, skilled demon dissector, don’t attempt to cut demon body materials easily.
At most, cut a horn, or an ear at best.
Entrails must be left to professionals.
These rules were born from numerous accidents.
The thick, unavoidable bloody stench, sulfur charred smell, visceral odors, and a peculiar antiseptic-like odor from strong Purification sprays bombarded the senses.
Sofia’s face paled slightly, instinctively covering her mouth and nose.
How could this smell be so strong?
Even on the main battlefield, such a bloody scent could not be smelled.
But she could understand why.
The Blood War Fortress hadn’t fought a defensive battle for many years; the last time demons pushed to its base was long past.
Most of them were on the main battlefield.
The main battlefield was vast, with mutual pushes and different combat sites each time.
But Blood Pit Fortress was different.
Every war erupted before its fortifications, always gathering here.
Combined with the Abyss’s relentless assaults, almost unceasing.
It led to frequent massacres, forming such a scene.
Black market merchants in various attires shuttled among the towering piles of materials, negotiating prices and packing.
They spoke with accents from different planes, faces showing shrewd calculations and travel-worn fatigue.
The clink of gold coins, the glow from inspecting Magic Crystal Stones, and fierce haggling sounds were incessant.
This was an open-air marketplace set on the battlefield’s frontline, catering to Avengers.
But this scene was quite normal, maybe even a bit quiet for them.
After all, the corpses left by the Night Watcher’s battles were few, not proportional to the demons they slew.
In the chaotic, busy atmosphere above and around, fully armed patrol squads never ceased.
Clad in standard Night Watcher gear, they marched in unison, eyes sharply scanning the scene, occasionally whispering, halos flashing in their gaze.
As Aryan and his team were absorbed by this scene, observing it, Grolong suddenly widened his eyes, shouting, "Ragnar?! Aren’t you rotting in some demon’s gut yet?"
Only to see a burly Beastman commanding his subordinates to move a massive Horned Demon corpse, turning around, showing a one-eyed face with a row of menacing yellow teeth, laughing in response.
"Grolong! Rockhead! Your injuries should’ve sent you back for ten more runs yet you’re alive? Ha! Blood War Fortress sent you to bargain here too?"
His words were crude, but his eyes revealed the joy of an old comrade reunion.
