Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Life After Discharge

"These are six sets of tests for three subjects, six sets of real practice exams."

"Mengmeng, you have to keep up the good work."

"You’ve received so many gifts this time—from the school, from the police officers, and from our class. Mengmeng, are you happy?"

The principal squatted down, patted Mengmeng’s little head, and asked gently.

To Mengmeng, that gentle smile was no different from a prehistoric beast’s.

But facing the envious and adoring gazes of so many other children, she could never bring herself to say she was unhappy.

She could only nod with a miserable look on her little face.

She looked toward Jiang Fan and Yin Ruxue as if pleading for help.

One looked left, the other looked right, completely avoiding her gaze.

They looked calm on the surface, but inside, they were dying of laughter.

"Alright, let’s get a photo of this family of three, shall we?"

The photographer immediately found a good spot. Mengmeng grabbed Jiang Fan’s hand with her left and Yin Ruxue’s with her right.

The two adults exchanged a look and squatted down in perfect sync.

"Three, two, one, cheese!"

The moment the photographer pressed the shutter, a photo was captured.

A joyful and harmonious family of three—except the little one in the middle looked a bit miserable no matter how you looked at her.

The two adults, however, were smiling very happily.

Since the awards ceremony took up the lunch break, it ended quickly so as not to cut into the children’s rest time.

Jiang Fan and Yin Ruxue each held a copy of the photo. As they walked out of the school, they couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

Mengmeng’s expression had been just too cute.

Wanting to resist but unable to, wanting to complain but not daring to.

"Come on, I’ll take you to the hospital first."

Yin Ruxue dropped Jiang Fan off at the hospital, then drove to her company.

In a good mood, Jiang Fan walked into the hospital room.

Sun Yanzi had just finished packing her things. The moment she turned her head and saw Jiang Fan, their eyes met, and they both froze.

After a long moment, Jiang Fan glanced around the room. "What are you doing?"

"Why are you back?"

They both spoke at the same time.

"Never mind why I’m back. What are you doing? Are you discharging yourself?"

Sun Yanzi’s face flushed red. She mumbled, unable to speak, her head lowered like a small child who had done something wrong.

"No, I just... I..."

She stammered for a long time but couldn’t form a complete sentence.

"Didn’t I tell you? You need to stay in the hospital for two more days."

"Wait until you’re fully recovered before you leave."

Jiang Fan’s brows furrowed, his good mood vanishing without a trace.

"If you were just planning to leave, fine. But the stuff could have stayed here for now. Why are you packing it all up?"

"Are you afraid you’ll recover too quickly?"

His voice was exceptionally low now.

"Well... don’t be angry."

"I didn’t mean to. I was just so bored staying here, and I feel like I’m already better. I asked the doctor, and he said I could be discharged."

Sun Yanzi came to Jiang Fan’s side, took his hand, and said plaintively.

"I feel like a bird trapped in a cage right now."

"I want to get out."

The grievance and longing in her words made Jiang Fan’s heart soften, and the words of blame got stuck in his throat.

"Alright, then. Stop packing. I’ll finish up. We’ll check you out and go home."

Jiang Fan sighed and finally gave in.

"Yay! I knew you were the best!"

Sun Yanzi beamed with joy.

In truth, she had already packed most of her things. Jiang Fan just did the final bit of packing, then handled the discharge paperwork before taking her home.

"No one’s been staying here for a few days. You just stay put, and I’ll clean the place up."

Jiang Fan rolled up his sleeves and walked into the kitchen.

He started washing everything—the pots, pans, dishes, and even the bedding.

After that, he took a new bedding set from the closet and made the bed for her.

By the time he finished everything, it was already past three in the afternoon.

"I’m exhausted. What do you want to eat tonight?"

He lay on the sofa and turned his head to look at Sun Yanzi.

Ever since they got home, Jiang Fan had been busy around the house, and Sun Yanzi’s gaze had never left him.

"Anything is fine. Some porridge would be good."

"Okay. We’re out of rice anyway, so I’ll go to the supermarket and get some."

"What dishes do you want? I’ll make them for you."

Jiang Fan patted his chest.

"Stir-fried pork with chili peppers, and hot and sour shredded potatoes."

Sun Yanzi’s eyes lit up as she quickly rattled off her requests.

Jiang Fan nodded. "You want to eat spicy food now? No way."

Sun Yanzi pouted. "Then what can I eat?"

"Let me think. You can’t have eggs, can’t have beef... Those are all inflammatory foods. Eating them will make your wound heal very slowly."

"Forget it. I’ll see what to buy when I get to the supermarket."

"I’ll go too! I’ll go too!"

"Huh?"

"What are you going for?"

"I can go by myself. The supermarket is crowded. What if someone bumps into your wound?"

Jiang Fan was just about to shake his head and refuse.

But he found Sun Yanzi had already pressed herself against him, her arms wrapped around his neck, her searingly hot body tight against his.

She tilted her head up slightly, looking at him pitifully. "Please just let me go, okay?"

"I’ll be careful."

"You..."

Jiang Fan scratched his head, completely vexed.

’It’s not that I want to say no, but I have zero resistance against a girl acting like this.’

"Fine, fine, fine. You can come, you can come."

Helpless, Jiang Fan could only take her out with him.

The two of them went to the supermarket, picking up a little of this and a little of that. Toward the end, Sun Yanzi quietly grabbed two packs of sanitary pads from a shelf and put them in the shopping cart.

Just then, Jiang Fan walked over carrying a bag of potatoes. "Are you done? If you’re done, let’s go."

"Done, done."

Sun Yanzi pushed the cart in front, quickly walking to the checkout counter and taking all the items out.

"Be careful, be gentle. I’ll do it, I’ll do it."

Startled, Jiang Fan rushed over to Sun Yanzi’s side in a couple of long strides.

"I can do it."

Her voice was a little quiet, her cheeks slightly red.

"Be good. I’ll do it."

Jiang Fan ignored her and took the items out one by one, then watched the cashier start scanning them.

When he saw the two packs of sanitary pads, his expression was priceless.

He finally understood why Sun Yanzi had insisted on coming.

’Her period must be coming soon...’

"Sir, the total is 214. How would you like to pay?"

The cashier’s voice interrupted Jiang Fan’s thoughts.

"Ah? WeChat, WeChat."

Jiang Fan quickly averted his gaze from the sanitary pads and pulled up his payment code.

Sun Yanzi, both flustered and annoyed, gave him a sharp pinch on his waist.

Even though he had seen everything there was to see, and things he shouldn’t have, while taking care of her in the hospital...

...she still couldn’t help but feel shy at a time like this.

"I’m leaving."

Sun Yanzi lowered her head and walked ahead quickly.

Seeing this, Jiang Fan quickly grabbed the bags and chased after her.
