"A reward?"

Yin Ruxue hadn’t actually considered that at first.

"The leader of that group was a wanted criminal."

"And catching them was all thanks to the trap Mengmeng made."

"If it weren’t for that trap, if they had run for another ten or twenty minutes, it would have been nearly impossible to catch them in such a large forest."

"Mengmeng has been having too much fun lately and has been neglecting her studies. That won’t do."

"We should probably forget about any reward," Yin Ruxue said with some concern.

"Her grades are slipping?"

"Well, how about this then?"

Jiang Fan suddenly sat up.

"What?"

Yin Ruxue looked over, puzzled.

"Her school will give her a reward, and the police department probably will too."

"We’ll have both places exchange the rewards for study materials, test papers, and classic literature."

"Don’t be fooled by how young she is; she cares a lot about her reputation."

"If you sweet-talk her a bit, she’ll tear right through them."

"That way, her studies won’t fall behind."

Jiang Fan grew more and more excited as he spoke.

He remembered a time back in school when he found a man’s bag and turned it in to a police officer he met on the street.

Not two days later, the officer and the man showed up at his school to thank him, carrying a huge pile of test papers and study materials.

His teacher praised him as a promising student and told him to finish all of it...

His grades shot up that semester, but heaven knows how much he suffered.

"You... just because you’ve been caught in the rain, you have to tear up everyone else’s umbrella, is that it?"

Yin Ruxue rolled her eyes charmingly.

"What do you mean, ’tear up her umbrella’? I’m just thinking about her education."

Jiang Fan said it with righteous conviction, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"So, are you in or not?"

Unexpectedly, Yin Ruxue gave a rare nod and said in agreement, "Actually, I think that’s not a bad idea."

"Hehe, I’ll have a quiet word with her teacher tomorrow, then. Don’t you spill the beans," Jiang Fan chuckled mischievously.

"Okay, don’t worry."

With just a few whispered words, the two of them conspired to plunge Mengmeng into a nightmare of studying for the entire next semester.

If she heard them now, she probably wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.

Unwittingly, the distance between the two of them had suddenly closed considerably.

It was just like one of those families where the parents are the true love story, and the child was an accident.

At that moment, Jiang Fan didn’t feel so resistant toward her anymore.

"We should get to sleep. We have to head back tomorrow."

With that, Jiang Fan stretched and lay down.

"Alright."

Early the next morning, Jiang Fan crawled out of the tent. While Mengmeng was still asleep, he found her school teachers and told them about the plan he and Yin Ruxue had discussed the day before.

After hearing him out, the male and female teachers all gave Jiang Fan a thumbs-up. "You’re the master of mischief!"

"If Mengmeng finds out, she probably won’t speak to you for days."

"I’m going to have to learn this trick to deal with my own little rebel at home."

The teachers chattered amongst themselves.

Once everyone was up, they quickly packed up and began the journey back.

After returning to the school, all the parents sorted through their things, taking home what was theirs and returning all the school’s equipment.

Then, another parent-teacher meeting was held, specifically to discuss the incident and to praise Jiang Fan and Yin Ruxue.

When the two of them came out of the auditorium, they exchanged a look and saw the amusement in each other’s eyes.

"Let’s go. I’m heading back to the office. You’re going to the hospital, right?"

Yin Ruxue dangled her keys.

"Yeah."

Jiang Fan nodded.

"Get in, I’ll give you a ride."

Jiang Fan was a little surprised to hear that.

But after a moment’s thought, he gladly accepted.

Just as the two of them were leaving the school gates, a teacher hurried over and stopped them.

"Mengmeng’s dad, Mengmeng’s mom, some people from the police department are here! They’ve given high praise and a reward to the school and to Mengmeng."

"It’s a good thing you two haven’t left yet. They’d like to invite you to come over."

"A reward? So, what about what I told the principal this morning?" Jiang Fan’s eyes lit up as he quickly asked.

Seeing his rather excited expression, the teacher suppressed a smile.

"Don’t worry, it’s all been prepared."

"What kind of father are you?"

Yin Ruxue shot him a glare.

Jiang Fan rolled his eyes. ’Does she really think I didn’t see the excitement in her eyes just now?’

But it wasn’t a good time to expose her.

"Alright then, let’s go have a look."

The two of them followed the teacher to the classroom, where the staff from the police department and the principal were already waiting.

Seeing her mom and dad, Mengmeng waved at them with extra excitement.

Jiang Fan struggled to hold back his laughter.

’She’s still smiling now. I just hope she doesn’t start crying in a minute.’

"We won’t say much more about the other details. We hope the other children can learn from Mengmeng’s example."

"For this incident, we want to give special recognition to young Mengmeng and her parents."

After a brief speech, the police staff and the school teachers began to hand out the items.

"Mengmeng, come on up."

The homeroom teacher beckoned to Mengmeng.

"And, uh, Mr. Jiang, Ms. Yin, could you two come over as well? Please stand on either side of Mengmeng."

"We need to take a group photo in a moment."

As he spoke, he brought in a huge stack of classic books and various other study materials from outside.

The smile on Mengmeng’s extremely excited little face suddenly froze.

A bad feeling welled up inside her.

Sure enough, the homeroom teacher soon spoke up. "This is the reward from the police officers for Mengmeng’s bravery."

The homeroom teacher patted the large stack of classic literature on the left.

’Just extracurricular books and study materials? That’s still acceptable,’ Mengmeng thought, quietly sighing in relief.

Sensing the shift in Mengmeng’s mood, Jiang Fan and Yin Ruxue both struggled to suppress their amusement.

Jiang Fan, in particular, was pinching his own thigh, afraid he might laugh out loud.
