Chapter 2749 - 2746: Gray Threads

Song Ruozhao and Ling Feng almost noticed the strange phenomenon at the same time, and almost simultaneously reacted that they had to quickly leave the spots where they were standing.

Ling Feng instantly stowed away the Magic Mirror, then summoned Little Fei and moved away from the cliff edge of the waterfall where he had just been standing. Song Ruozhao also took a step back, moving through the air with Sky Command.

After the waterfall reversed its flow, it suddenly turned into sharp icicles. If the two of them had retreated a bit slower, they would definitely have been skewered through the body!

Right after dodging this sneak attack, Ling Feng’s expression became slightly grim. Staring at the trembling plain below, he asked, "Could it be that whatever’s under this plain is actually alive? Why did the waterfall suddenly attack us?"

"I actually vaguely sensed something off just now. At first I only felt there was something strange beneath this plain, but now I’m realizing the reason there’s no life here might be because something down below periodically wipes out all the living beings around it!"

"It clears out living beings? Why would it do that?" Ling Feng was a bit stunned.

"As for the exact reason, I think we’ll only know if we go down there and take a look. I’m now vaguely understanding why the Shui Clan people back then didn’t settle here. Look under the waterfall..." Song Ruozhao shifted his gaze, pointing toward the cave revealed below because of the reversed waterfall.

Ling Feng had Little Fei fly to the waterfall cave below. Inside, he saw countless fossilized bones of various creatures, as well as many ice blocks of unknown origin.

Seeing these ice blocks, Ling Feng suddenly realized something. He immediately had Little Fei release the Fireflies from its body, then flew into the cave. Song Ruozhao saw Ling Feng go in, and he too descended and followed.

Ling Feng came to a pile of ice blocks, and after staring at them for a long while, a look of shock appeared on his face, followed by one of dawning comprehension.

"Ling Feng, what exactly did you discover that made you come down to see for yourself?" Song Ruozhao walked up beside Ling Feng, and saw that within that pile of ice blocks there were actually a large number of human facial features. Judging from their expressions, it was as if they were sleeping inside the ice, yet there wasn’t the slightest sign of life.

"This is..." Song Ruozhao was also somewhat stunned. He had never seen such a bizarre scene before.

"After you left the estate, Shui Nian and Shui Kong sent a Shui Clan person to monitor my movements. That watcher’s ability was to turn into tiny streams of water, hiding their body within cracks,"

"And just now, when I saw these ice blocks and the surrounding bones, I suddenly realized something..."

"You mean...?" Song Ruozhao also understood a bit in his heart.

Ling Feng nodded. "Those fossilized bones are the remains of animals that previously died in this cave, or rather on this plain, turned to bone. And these ice blocks are the corpses of Shui Clan people. After they were killed, they were permanently turned into ice and sealed away here, never to see the light of day again."

Song Ruozhao silently stared at those ice blocks, then followed Ling Feng out of the cave.

Ling Feng looked at the water-surfaced plain that had already calmed down and said faintly, "Looks like this place really is quite interesting. If there truly is some kind of trait that exterminates all living things nearby, then I definitely have to see what kind of monster is hiding here."

Ling Feng stood on Little Fei’s back and flew above the plain. Song Ruozhao followed behind Ling Feng and also arrived above the plain. The two of them hovered in the air, and the plain, which had already regained its silence, now seemed to be covered with a thick layer of oppressive pressure.

Ling Feng stared at the plain for a while, then summoned the Blade of the Apocalypse from his Ring.

"Master, what did you call me out for? Are you sending me to the battlefield to kill enemies?" the Blade of the Apocalypse said cheerfully.

Ling Feng shook his head. "No, how could I let you do something that dangerous? I called you out just to have you shout a challenge at this plain. I’m too lazy to yell..."

"Got it, Master. I’ll bellow right away."

"Ahem!" The Blade of the Apocalypse cleared the throat it didn’t actually have.

"What fiend dares to run wild here? Hurry up and show your true form! Sneaking around in the dark—what kind of man is that? If you really have the guts, then come out and spar with your granddaddy here! Stop putting on spooky airs!"

"You vicious, evil bastard, what the hell are you up to down there? Come out this instant!" The Blade of the Apocalypse paced back and forth, hurling insult after insult at whatever living thing might exist beneath the plain, without using a single curse word.

The noisy voice even made Song Ruozhao feel a bit irritated.

"Is this little thing always like this?" Song Ruozhao pointed at the fervent Blade of the Apocalypse and asked.

Ling Feng answered somewhat awkwardly, nodding. "Whenever there’s a job involving calling someone out, I always let this guy handle it. Otherwise, if I had to do it every time, my voice would have been gone long ago."

There was admiration in Ling Feng’s gaze toward the Blade of the Apocalypse. "Still, this guy’s taunts always work wonders. Even I don’t know where it gets so many ridiculous lines and mocking phrases. Usually after hearing it a few times, the other side gets annoyed to death..."

Just as Ling Feng was enthusiastically telling Song Ruozhao about the ’virtues’ of the Blade of the Apocalypse, the surface of the water-surfaced plain suddenly started trembling again. Then a rumbling voice asked:

"What petty thieves dare cause trouble here? Do you have any idea what place this is?"

A hazy ripple suddenly shot out from beneath the plain—a gray thread-like thing—which actually managed to bind the Blade of the Apocalypse in mid-air in the instant before Ling Feng, Song Ruozhao, or the Blade of the Apocalypse could react.

"This..." The Blade of the Apocalypse only felt its vision blur, and then it was inexplicably bound by these random threads that had appeared out of nowhere. What’s more, these seemingly inconspicuous, even fragile threads didn’t snap when they touched the weapon’s sharp edge.

Afterward, the Blade of the Apocalypse struggled violently, trying to break free of the threads’ restraints, but no matter how hard it tried, it just couldn’t get loose.

At the same time, the gray threads kept absorbing the energy from the Blade of the Apocalypse. Even as a weapon, the Blade of the Apocalypse now felt itself growing weaker and weaker.

On the other side, Ling Feng had already summoned Kai Tian and the God Slayer Saber at the instant the Blade of the Apocalypse was attacked, intending to send these two divine weapons to rescue it.

Yet the edges of these two divine weapons still couldn’t cut through those eerie threads. Instead, they themselves fell into the trap and couldn’t escape.

The gray threads coiled around the Blade of the Apocalypse’s blade suddenly split apart, then spread to bind Kai Tian and the God Slayer Saber as well.

Only then did Ling Feng realize just how dangerous these gray threads were. He had no choice but to bring out the Chaos Sword Phantom in his hand. A world-cleaving flash of sword light swept out, finally severing the gray threads and freeing Kai Tian, the God Slayer Saber, and the Blade of the Apocalypse, which had had a large amount of its energy drained.

Ling Feng hurriedly put the three weapons away into the Ring.

"Hm?" That voice from before let out a sound of puzzlement. "What weapon has such terrifying power? It can actually break my threads. You do have some skill,"

"To dodge my first wave of attacks and then cut through my threads—such strength means you’re clearly not ordinary folk,"

"If you have any courage left, then come down here now. I’ll be waiting for you below!"

The plain split open with a huge crack, and a chasm-like fissure appeared before Ling Feng and Song Ruozhao’s eyes.
