The Harem System Rewards Me For Everything

Chapter 66: The Quiet and Calm Before the Storm

The familiar sound of the heavy oak doors to our manor clicking shut, finally allowed my jaw to loosen. It had closed us off from the freezing coastal wind, and the warmth had already started creeping into my body.

I leaned my back against the polished wood and let out a long, ragged exhale. The adrenaline that had kept my blood pumping through the jagged peaks finally crashed, leaving behind a profound exhaustion.

My ribs continuously throbbed in time with my pulse. The phantom sting of acid burns flared across my forearms, a sharp reminder of the automated turret in the precursor corridor.

"Welcome home, Master Sam," Ignis announced. He slowly walked into the foyer, holding a silver tray with fresh towels. His mechanical eyes whirred. "It appears the local flora and fauna were less than hospitable today."

"You could say that, Ignis," I muttered, tossing my mud-caked coat onto a nearby hook. "We brought the house down."

I looked over at Elise. She wasn’t shaking. The hollow, haunted stare that usually followed her memories of the rogue mage was completely gone. She ran a hand through her wet, slick hair and looked around the brightly lit foyer. A genuine, relaxed smile broke across her pale face. She looked entirely at peace.

"I need a shower," Katrina groaned, stretching her arms high above her head. Her spine popped loudly in the quiet room. "And then I need about ten pounds of meat."

"Agreed," Damara said, rolling her shoulders to loosen the tight muscles in her neck. "Hot water first. Then we can feast."

They filed upstairs, leaving a trail of wet mud and precursor dust on the hardwood. I didn’t care about the mess. We were alive, and we were home.

Thirty minutes later, the tense atmosphere of the dungeon dive was officially dead. I sat on the plush living room couch wearing loose sweatpants and a clean cotton shirt.

The girls filtered downstairs one by one, trading their lethal armor and heavy leather for oversized hoodies and soft pajamas.

Sarah meandered over and dropped onto the cushions beside me. She wore a massive, fluffy sweater that swallowed her hands completely.

Katrina claimed the armchair, curling her tail around her legs, while Damara and Elise took the opposite sofa.

My stomach growled loudly enough to echo off the walls. Pulling my phone from my pocket, I opened the Celestial Market app. I didn’t bother browsing for healthy, balanced meals or local Velorian delicacies.

We had just survived a death trap. We needed pure, unfiltered comfort food.

I tapped through the menus and spent a handful of Favor points. A series of bright, golden flashes illuminated the coffee table.

A massive spread of double cheeseburgers, heavily salted fries, and thick chocolate milkshakes materialized out of thin air. The smell of hot grease, toasted buns, and melted cheddar instantly overpowered the lingering scent of damp cave and ozone.

"This," Katrina declared, grabbing a burger with both hands, "is exactly why you are my favorite person."

She took a massive bite, groaning in pure satisfaction as cheese dripped down her chin. She didn’t bother wiping it away, immediately reaching for a handful of fries.

I grabbed a burger for myself and sank back into the cushions. The first bite tasted like absolute heaven. The familiar, savory grease coated my tongue, grounding me completely.

"The market interface continues to baffle me," Damara noted. She unwrapped her food with significantly more grace than the brawler, though her crimson eyes gleamed with undeniable hunger. "But I will never question the results."

Elise took a sip of her chocolate shake, her eyes widening slightly at the rich sweetness. "It beats chewing on dried rations in the rain," she said softly.

We spent the next hour doing absolutely nothing productive. We ate until we could barely move. We swapped lighthearted banter about Katrina’s messy eating habits and Sarah’s refusal to wear shoes indoors. Nobody mentioned the rogue mage. Nobody talked about the rusted surgical tables or the agonizing sympathetic tether. The oppressive darkness of the mountain was locked away. We just existed in the warm, comfortable light of the living room.

Eventually, the heavy food and the lingering fatigue caught up with us. I fell asleep right there on the couch, surrounded by my family.

A sharp, rhythmic knocking on the front door pulled me from a deep, dreamless sleep. Morning sunlight streamed through the large living room windows, casting bright geometric shapes across the floorboards.

I groaned, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. My ribs protested sharply as I pushed myself off the cushions. The girls were already awake, puttering around the kitchen. I dragged my feet across the foyer and yanked the heavy door open.

Calvin stood on the porch. He looked exhausted, carrying heavy, dark bags under his eyes, but a wide, relieved grin split his bearded face.

"Morning, Sam," Calvin boomed. "I hope I didn’t wake you. The guild patrols secured the northern peaks late last night. We confirmed the outpost is completely offline. You guys did it!"

"Come on in," I said, stepping aside to let the burly official enter.

Damara walked out of the kitchen holding her leather pack. She unbuckled the heavy straps and pulled out the encrypted journals, setting them firmly on the dining room table alongside the intact precursor components we had salvaged.

"The rogue mage is permanently crippled," Damara stated, her voice carrying a professional, lethal edge. "His magical circuits are burned out. These are his research logs."

Calvin carefully picked up the journals, treating them like fragile glass. "You have no idea what this means for the region. He’s been a phantom for years." He looked at Elise, who stood quietly near the kitchen island, sipping a mug of hot tea. He offered her a deeply respectful nod.

"The Pathfinder’s Guild owes you a massive debt," Calvin continued, turning back to me. "I processed the bounty this morning. Your party’s standing has been elevated to Exalted. You will never pay a guild tax again, and merchants will cut their prices for your crest."

My phone vibrated aggressively in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen.

[ GUILD BOUNTY CLEARED: High-Grade Apparatus Recovery ]

[ REWARD: + 1,000,000 Favor |Town Rep: Exalted ]

[ PERK UNLOCKED: Market Discounts & Guild Authority ]

"We appreciate it, Calvin," I said, locking the screen. "Just doing our job, and what we can. Honestly."

"You did more than that," he replied. He secured the journals in his coat. "Rest up. You earned it."

After Calvin left, I joined the girls in the kitchen. Elise handed me a steaming mug of zap-zap juice. The bitter, earthy coffee hit my system immediately, clearing away the last lingering cobwebs of sleep.

"So," I started, taking a sip of my coffee. "What is the plan for today?"

"I’m going to the market district," Elise said, a spark of genuine excitement in her voice. "I want to buy some new herbs for the clinic. And maybe look at the bookstore."

"I’ll come with you!" Sarah chirped. "I want to see the ocean again."

Katrina swallowed a mouthful of bread. "If we are going to town, we are getting pastries. I want the ones with the sweet cream inside."

"I will escort you three," Damara decided. She turned her crimson gaze toward me. "And what about you, Sam? Are you going to sleep on the couch all day?"

I rolled my shoulders, wincing slightly as my bruised ribs protested the movement. The deep, heavy exhaustion was gone. I set the empty mug in the sink.

"I might just browse the market," I replied. "See if there are any new upgrades for the house."

We moved into the living room, settling back into our lazy morning routine. Katrina sprawled out across the rug, batting at a loose thread on the sofa. Damara sat beside me, leaning her head against my shoulder. The quiet domestic peace felt incredibly grounding.

Deep in my pocket, my phone vibrated.

It wasn’t a standard, polite notification chime. It was a heavy, continuous mechanical buzz that rattled against my thigh.

I pulled the device out. The glass screen illuminated the dim living room. A massive, pulsing red banner dominated the display.

[ URGENT QUEST: The Stolen Bride ]

[ TASK: Rescue Damara from the abyssal suitor.]

[ REWARD: ??? + Harem Member Retention ]

[ TIME LIMIT: 72 HOURS ]

I stared at the screen, my brain stalling out completely. I read the glowing text three times, trying to make sense of the words.

"What is it, Sam?" Damara asked. "Did Calvin forget something?"

"No," I muttered, turning the phone so they could see the bright red text. "It says I have to rescue you from an abyssal suitor."

Damara let out a genuine laugh. "Rescue me from what? I’m sitting right here."

A jagged dimensional rift violently tore open in the center of our living room. It burned with a sickening purple fire. A massive gauntlet shot out and clamped onto her shoulder.

The void violently pulled backward, dragging Damara into the abyss.
