THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 109 — The Soul Realm
Kael stepped forward.
The blue world around him had no ground.
No sky.
No horizon.
There was only endless Soul Flame stretching in every direction.
The Bone Sovereign stood several dozen meters away.
Its skeletal body was surrounded by pale blue fire.
There was no staff.
No army.
No Soul Furnace.
No ancient formation.
Only the Sovereign's soul.
And Kael's.
The System appeared.
[Unique Domain: Soul Realm]
[External Equipment: Severely Suppressed]
[Bloodline Techniques: Restricted]
[Physical Attributes: Preserved]
[Soul Resistance: Insufficient]
[Warning: Death within the Soul Realm will trigger Legendary Immortality.]
Kael stared at the final message.
“So I can still reform.”
“Yes.”
The Bone Sovereign raised one hand.
“But your body will remember every death.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“That sounds like a threat.”
“It is a warning.”
A blue blade appeared.
It was enormous.
Kael moved.
The blade descended.
He rolled beneath it.
The weapon struck the space where he had stood.
There was no explosion.
No sound.
Yet the entire Soul Realm trembled.
Kael immediately understood.
This isn't physical.
The attack wasn't cutting matter.
It was cutting his soul.
Another blade appeared.
Kael jumped.
A third attacked from behind.
He twisted.
The edge passed along his shoulder.
A cold sensation spread through him.
Kael's vision blurred.
[Soul damage detected.]
He landed.
The Sovereign attacked again.
Kael moved.
Another blade.
He ducked.
Another.
He stepped sideways.
The attacks kept coming.
There was no visible casting.
No preparation.
The Sovereign simply thought—
and the Soul Realm obeyed.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
Then I need to stop reacting.
He closed his eyes.
Fighting Without Sight
The next attack came.
Kael listened.
Nothing.
The Soul Realm was silent.
He couldn't hear footsteps.
Couldn't hear breathing.
Couldn't even hear his own heartbeat properly.
Then—
a faint pressure appeared on his left side.
Kael moved.
A blue blade passed through the place where his body had been.
Kael's eyes opened.
Another pressure appeared.
Above.
He ducked.
Another.
Behind.
He stepped forward.
The attack missed.
Kael's expression changed.
“I can feel them.”
The Sovereign watched.
“Continue.”
Kael closed his eyes again.
The next attack came from three directions.
Left.
Right.
Above.
He moved through the gap.
Then another.
Four directions.
Kael twisted between them.
He wasn't seeing the attacks.
He was sensing changes in the Soul Realm itself.
Every attack created pressure.
Every manifestation changed the surrounding soul energy.
Tiny disturbances.
Almost impossible to notice.
But Kael could feel them.
His body had begun adapting.
The System responded.
[Soul Resistance response detected.]
[Adaptation beginning.]
Kael's eyes widened.
“Adaptation?”
The Sovereign looked at him.
“Yes.”
Kael remembered something.
His father had always told him that talent alone wasn't enough.
Training mattered.
Experience mattered.
But there was something else.
His body.
Ever since his awakening, Kael had noticed that his body seemed to adjust unusually quickly to repeated stress.
He had never understood why.
Now—
he did.
The System continued.
[Repeated Soul Damage detected.]
[Host physiology adapting.]
[Soul Perception increasing.]
Kael smiled.
“So my body can learn this too.”
The Sovereign became silent.
Then it raised both hands.
The entire Soul Realm changed.
A Thousand Blades
The blue world became a storm.
Hundreds of weapons formed in the air.
Swords.
Spears.
Blades.
Arrows.
Chains.
They all pointed toward Kael.
Kael stared.
“That seems excessive.”
The Sovereign answered calmly.
“You asked for a battle.”
The weapons moved.
Kael ran.
The first wave descended.
He moved left.
The second wave.
He jumped.
The third.
He rolled.
The fourth.
He twisted through a narrow gap.
Five blades appeared where his feet were about to land.
Kael changed direction.
The sixth wave followed.
Kael moved again.
The attacks became faster.
His body couldn't keep avoiding everything.
One blade touched his side.
A wave of soul pressure spread through him.
Another struck his back.
Kael stumbled.
Three more appeared.
He couldn't escape.
Kael crossed his arms.
The attacks hit.
His vision disappeared.
Five seconds later—
Kael reformed.
He gasped.
The Soul Realm remained unchanged.
The Bone Sovereign was waiting.
Kael touched his chest.
The pain was gone.
But the memory remained.
The timing.
The angles.
The pressure.
The System displayed:
[Soul Resistance: 0% → 3%]
Kael stared.
“Three percent.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“Your body remembers.”
Kael smiled.
“Then let's try again.”
The Sovereign raised its hand.
The blades returned.
Kael moved.
This time—
he recognized the first attack.
Then the second.
Then the third.
His body had already memorized some of the pressure patterns.
The fourth attack came.
He moved before seeing it.
The fifth.
He ducked.
The sixth.
He stepped aside.
Kael's movements became smoother.
The Sovereign watched carefully.
“You adapt after death.”
Kael answered while moving.
“That's why I don't mind dying anymore.”
“Then you have misunderstood your immortality.”
Kael jumped over a blade.
The Sovereign continued.
“Death gives you information.”
Another blade.
Kael moved.
“But information without understanding is useless.”
Kael landed.
His eyes narrowed.
“So you're testing whether I can understand.”
“Yes.”
Kael smiled.
“Then test me.”
The Second Layer
The Bone Sovereign suddenly stopped.
Every weapon disappeared.
The Soul Realm became completely silent.
Kael looked around.
“What happened?”
“You survived the first layer.”
Kael frowned.
“First layer?”
The Sovereign raised one hand.
The endless blue space collapsed.
Kael's surroundings changed.
Suddenly—
he was standing inside the Darven family estate.
Kael froze.
The courtyard.
The halls.
The damaged walls.
Everything looked exactly as he remembered it.
Even the sky.
Crimson.
He turned.
His father's voice echoed.
“Kael.”
Kael's body became rigid.
He knew that voice.
“Dad?”
A figure stood behind him.
His father.
Alive.
Healthy.
His left arm intact.
Wearing the same calm expression Kael remembered from before the massacre.
Kael stared.
His father smiled.
“Come here.”
Kael didn't move.
The Bone Sovereign's voice came from somewhere beyond the illusion.
“Second Layer.”
“Memory.”
Kael's fists tightened.
“This isn't real.”
“No.”
His father stepped forward.
“You don't have to survive anymore.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“You can come home.”
Kael's breathing became uneven.
The illusion was perfect.
His father's expression.
His voice.
Even the tiny movements he used when speaking.
Everything.
Kael stared.
Then slowly shook his head.
“No.”
His father looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because my father is dead.”
Silence.
The illusion remained unchanged.
His father smiled.
“You can save me.”
Kael froze.
“What?”
“You have the power now.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
The world around him changed.
He saw himself running through the portal.
His father fighting.
The attackers.
The final moment.
Then—
a new version.
Kael turned back.
He stayed.
He defeated the attackers.
His father survived.
His mother survived.
The Darven estate remained standing.
Kael stared.
It was everything he had wanted.
Everything he had lost.
His father placed a hand on his shoulder.
“You can choose this.”
Kael's eyes became cold.
“No.”
The illusion changed.
His mother appeared.
Then relatives.
Everyone.
Alive.
Waiting for him.
“Stay.”
Kael's fists shook.
For a moment—
he almost moved forward.
Then he noticed something.
His mother was smiling.
But she wasn't crying.
His father had no scar.
The sword at his waist was different.
Small inconsistencies.
Kael had memorized those things.
Because they were the memories that had shaped him.
This wasn't them.
It was an imitation.
Kael looked directly at the illusion.
“You're not my family.”
The world became silent.
His father's face changed.
The warmth disappeared.
The illusion shattered.
CRACK!
The entire estate broke apart like glass.
Kael remained standing.
The Bone Sovereign appeared.
“You resisted.”
Kael looked at it.
“You used my memories.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To see what controls you.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“And?”
The Sovereign answered:
“Nothing controls you completely.”
Kael stared.
“That sounds like another riddle.”
“It is an observation.”
The Third Layer
The Soul Realm changed again.
The Darven estate disappeared.
Kael found himself in darkness.
No blue flames.
No structures.
No sounds.
Only darkness.
The Bone Sovereign stood far away.
“This is the third layer.”
Kael narrowed his eyes.
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Find yourself.”
Kael frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The Sovereign disappeared.
Kael stood alone.
Then—
another Kael appeared.
Same face.
Same clothes.
Same height.
Same aura.
The second Kael raised his fists.
Kael stared.
“You're me.”
The copy attacked.
Kael blocked.
BOOM!
He was pushed backward.
The copy moved exactly like him.
Same stance.
Same rhythm.
Same reactions.
Kael attacked.
The copy blocked.
He changed angle.
The copy adapted.
Kael moved left.
The copy moved left.
The battle continued.
Every technique Kael used—
the copy already knew.
Kael stepped back.
“This is annoying.”
The copy charged.
Kael blocked.
The copy attacked again.
Kael dodged.
The copy followed.
Kael tried a feint.
The copy recognized it.
Kael smiled.
“Of course.”
The copy froze.
Kael relaxed his stance.
The copy copied the movement.
Kael suddenly stopped.
The copy stopped.
Kael stepped backward.
The copy stepped backward.
Kael raised his hand.
The copy raised its hand.
Kael stared.
“You're only copying me.”
The copy attacked.
Kael didn't react.
The fist stopped inches from his face.
The copy couldn't act without him.
Kael realized the rule.
The copy didn't possess its own decisions.
It only reflected him.
Kael lowered his hands.
The copy lowered its hands.
Kael turned away.
The copy turned away.
The Bone Sovereign's voice echoed.
“Then defeat yourself.”
Kael smiled.
“I don't have to.”
The copy attacked suddenly.
Kael didn't move.
The punch struck.
Kael died.
Five seconds later—
he returned.
The copy stood before him.
Kael looked at it.
The copy looked back.
Then Kael did something unexpected.
He sat down.
The copy sat down.
Kael closed his eyes.
The copy closed its eyes.
Minutes passed.
Nothing happened.
The Sovereign's voice echoed.
“Why have you stopped fighting?”
Kael answered:
“Because you're asking the wrong question.”
A pause.
“You said I had to defeat myself.”
“Yes.”
“I don't.”
Kael opened his eyes.
“I need to understand myself.”
The copy remained silent.
Kael looked at it.
“I know I'm weak.”
The copy remained still.
“I know I depend too much on my weapons.”
Still.
“I know I use immortality as a weapon.”
Nothing.
“I know I'm obsessed with becoming stronger.”
The copy's eyes changed slightly.
Kael continued.
“Because I don't ever want to be helpless again.”
The copy lowered its head.
Kael stared.
“There.”
A crack appeared across the copy.
Kael understood.
The third layer wasn't about defeating himself.
It was about acknowledging himself.
The fear.
The anger.
The grief.
The desire for revenge.
The desire to survive.
The desire to become powerful enough that no one could ever take everything away again.
Kael stood.
The copy stood.
Kael approached it.
“I don't need to destroy you.”
The copy looked at him.
“You're part of me.”
The copy dissolved.
Blue light entered Kael's body.
The System appeared.
[Soul Realm Trial completed.]
[Soul Perception greatly increased.]
[Soul Resistance: 3% → 17%]
[Adaptation response successful.]
[New Passive Trait acquired.]
[Soul Adaptation.]
Kael stared.
[Soul Adaptation]
The host's body gradually adapts to repeated soul-based attacks and environmental pressure.
Kael smiled.
“So this is what my body was doing.”
The Bone Sovereign appeared.
“You have finally understood.”
Kael looked at it.
“Understood what?”
“Why your bloodline is dangerous.”
Kael's expression changed.
The Sovereign continued.
“Your Metal Control is only the surface.”
“Your System is only the interface.”
“And your immortality is only a tool.”
The Sovereign pointed toward Kael.
“Your body itself is abnormal.”
Kael frowned.
“How?”
“It learns.”
A pause.
“It changes.”
Another.
“And unlike ordinary humans…”
The Sovereign's blue flames became brighter.
“…it does not always return to its previous state after surviving an extreme condition.”
Kael looked at his hands.
“So I evolve.”
“Yes.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“That's why my adaptation keeps increasing.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't my father mention it?”
The Sovereign remained silent.
Kael's expression hardened.
“You know.”
“I know pieces.”
“What pieces?”
The Sovereign looked toward the darkness.
“The first Darven discovered the same phenomenon.”
Kael froze.
“My ancestor?”
“Yes.”
“He called it something.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“What?”
The Bone Sovereign answered:
“Evolution.”
Kael's eyes widened.
The System immediately activated.
[Hidden physiological trait detected.]
[Evolutionary adaptation recognized.]
[Evolution system compatibility: ???]
Kael stared.
“Evolution system?”
The message disappeared before he could read more.
The Sovereign looked at him.
“You were never meant to remain the same.”
Kael's heartbeat quickened.
Then the Soul Realm began collapsing.
The blue world cracked.
The Sovereign raised its hand.
“Your trial is complete.”
Kael looked around.
“What happens next?”
The Sovereign smiled.
“You return.”
“Then what?”
The Sovereign's Soul Flame became strangely calm.
“Then you defeat me.”
The Return
The Soul Realm shattered.
Kael opened his eyes.
He was back in the Bone Domain.
The wasteland stretched around him.
The collapsed army remained scattered across the ground.
The Soul Furnace was silent.
The Bone Sovereign stood several meters away.
But something had changed.
The Sovereign's Soul Flame was smaller.
Its power had fallen.
Kael could feel it.
Not because the Beast had become weak.
Because the Soul Realm had consumed some of its energy.
The System appeared.
[Soul Realm Trial completed.]
[External equipment restrictions removed.]
[Soul Perception permanently increased.]
[Soul Adaptation acquired.]
[Legendary Beast condition updated.]
Kael looked toward the Sovereign.
“You wanted me to enter that realm.”
“Yes.”
“Because you wanted me to awaken that trait.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“Among other things.”
Kael tightened his grip around the Origin Blade.
“Then why?”
The Sovereign didn't answer immediately.
Finally—
“Because when you face what waits beyond the central prison…”
Its gaze moved toward the black tower.
“…your weapons may not be enough.”
Kael looked at the tower.
The System displayed:
[Central Containment Integrity: 48%]
The number flickered.
47%.
Kael's expression changed.
The Sovereign raised its hand.
“It is time.”
Kael looked back.
“For the final stage?”
“No.”
The blue flames surrounding the Sovereign intensified.
“For your battle against me.”
Kael lowered his stance.
“How strong are you now?”
The Sovereign smiled.
“Strong enough.”
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“Then let's finish it.”
The Bone Sovereign stepped forward.
The ground shook.
Its Soul Flame erupted.
Kael's Origin Blade answered.
The timer appeared.
[Legendary Immortality Remaining: 25:04:17]
Two figures stood across the dead wasteland.
The final Beast.
The last lock.
No army.
No furnace.
No formation.
No prison support.
Only Kael—
and the true Bone Sovereign.
Then the Sovereign raised its hand.
A blue flame appeared.
Kael charged.
The final battle began.
