THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 111 — The First Evolution
The blue world shook.
Kael stood beneath the overlapping Soul Realm, the Darven Origin Blade floating beside him.
The Bone Sovereign remained several dozen meters away.
Its white Soul Flame burned brighter than before.
Between them, a translucent System window hovered.
[Evolutionary Adaptation Condition Satisfied.]
[Evolution Path: Initial Stage.]
[Evolution Progress: 0%]
Kael stared.
“Evolution…”
The word felt strangely familiar.
He had heard countless stories about people becoming stronger.
Leveling.
Awakening.
Bloodline enhancement.
Titles.
Skills.
But evolution was different.
It wasn't simply gaining power.
It was changing.
Changing what he was capable of becoming.
The Bone Sovereign watched him.
“You finally reached it.”
Kael looked up.
“You knew this would happen?”
“I suspected.”
“You've seen it before.”
“No.”
The Sovereign's answer surprised him.
“Then how did you know?”
The Bone Sovereign pointed toward Kael.
“Because your body has been doing it since the day you entered this world.”
Kael looked at his hands.
The faint blue-white glow around his skin was already disappearing.
Nothing about him looked different.
No greater muscles.
No sudden surge of power.
No overwhelming aura.
The System remained at zero percent.
Kael frowned.
“Nothing happened.”
The Sovereign shook its head.
“That is the point.”
Kael narrowed his eyes.
“Explain.”
“Evolution is not a reward.”
The Bone Sovereign raised one hand.
“It is a process.”
A white Soul blade formed.
“And your body has only just begun.”
The weapon shot forward.
Kael moved.
The blade passed beside his head.
Another appeared.
Kael dodged.
Another.
He stepped sideways.
His Soul Perception had improved enough to feel the pressure before each attack.
Then—
the Sovereign changed the attack.
Instead of a blade—
a wave of Soul energy spread across the battlefield.
Kael jumped.
The wave passed beneath him.
The System flashed.
[Environmental adaptation detected.]
[Soul pressure exposure: 7 seconds.]
[Adaptation response: Active.]
Kael's eyes narrowed.
A new sensation spread through his body.
Not strength.
Not mana.
Adjustment.
His Soul Resistance climbed.
[Soul Resistance: 39% → 41%]
Kael smiled.
“So that's the first effect.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“Your body is learning the environment.”
Evolution Is Not Strength
The Bone Sovereign attacked.
Kael charged.
The Origin Blade moved independently.
A white spear formed.
Kael redirected the sword.
CLANG!
Spear against blade.
The force pushed him backward.
He immediately recovered.
Another attack.
Kael moved.
Then another.
The Sovereign suddenly switched from Soul weapons to pure pressure.
The air around Kael became heavy.
His movement slowed.
Kael's knees nearly buckled.
The System responded.
[Environmental pressure detected.]
[Adaptation response beginning.]
Kael gritted his teeth.
He pushed forward.
The pressure remained.
But gradually—
his movements became easier.
The System updated.
[Adaptation successful.]
[Current Soul Realm pressure resistance: +4%]
Kael smiled.
He had discovered the real function of evolution.
His body wasn't receiving random stat increases.
It was learning how to survive things it had repeatedly experienced.
The Bone Sovereign attacked again.
Kael dodged.
This time—
the pressure barely affected him.
The Sovereign's eyes narrowed.
“Faster than expected.”
Kael smiled.
“That's what I've been doing this whole time.”
“Now your body has begun recording it.”
“Yes.”
“But don't mistake adaptation for superiority.”
Kael's expression became serious.
“I'm not.”
The Sovereign raised its hand.
The Soul Realm changed.
The pressure vanished.
Kael immediately realized the trap.
The battlefield had suddenly become empty.
Too empty.
The Sovereign had removed the environmental challenge.
Which meant it was preparing something else.
Kael looked upward.
A giant white circle appeared in the Soul Realm.
Then another.
Then another.
Hundreds.
Kael's expression changed.
“That's too many.”
The Sovereign smiled.
“Then adapt.”
The White Storm
The circles released weapons.
Thousands.
Swords.
Spears.
Arrows.
Chains.
All formed from concentrated Soul energy.
Kael ran.
The first wave descended.
He moved through the gaps.
Second wave.
He twisted.
Third.
He jumped.
Fourth.
He rolled.
His Soul Perception tracked the disturbances.
The System continued recording.
[Repeated Soul attack detected.]
[Pattern recognition increasing.]
[Soul Resistance: 41% → 44%]
Kael's movements became smoother.
Another wave.
He stepped through.
Another.
He anticipated.
Another.
He barely moved.
The Sovereign watched.
“This is why your evolution is dangerous.”
Kael deflected another weapon.
“Because I get stronger from surviving?”
“No.”
The Sovereign's voice became serious.
“Because you don't adapt only to power.”
Kael looked at it.
“You adapt to methods.”
A white spear came toward Kael.
He moved.
A chain followed.
He jumped.
A blade appeared behind him.
He turned before it manifested fully.
CLANG!
He blocked.
Kael understood.
The Sovereign wasn't testing his durability.
It was testing his ability to recognize patterns.
And his body was beginning to memorize them.
The System flashed again.
[Soul Attack Pattern: 13% analyzed.]
[Soul Attack Pattern: 21% analyzed.]
[Soul Attack Pattern: 32% analyzed.]
Kael smiled.
“Keep going.”
The Sovereign's expression changed.
“Very well.”
The storm intensified.
The Second Stage of Adaptation
Kael's body began changing.
Not visibly.
Inside.
His nervous system adjusted.
His mana circulation became more efficient.
His senses became sharper.
His reaction time improved.
The repeated Soul pressure no longer felt foreign.
It became familiar.
The System displayed:
[Evolution Progress: 0% → 1%]
Kael's eyes widened.
“One percent.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“Your first permanent evolutionary progress.”
Kael looked at the number.
“Permanent?”
“Yes.”
“Then it doesn't reset.”
“No.”
The Sovereign paused.
“But progress alone won't tell you what you'll become.”
Kael stared.
“What determines the result?”
“Your repeated experiences.”
Kael's expression changed.
“So if I keep adapting to Soul attacks…”
“Your future evolution may favor Soul resistance.”
“If I adapt to poison…”
“Your body may develop corresponding resistance.”
“If I adapt to cold…”
“Another adaptation.”
Kael slowly smiled.
“Then the environment itself can shape evolution.”
“Yes.”
The Bone Sovereign looked at him.
“And that is why you are dangerous.”
Kael's smile disappeared.
“Because I can choose what I expose myself to.”
“Exactly.”
Kael looked toward the battlefield.
He suddenly understood the significance.
His evolution wouldn't be random.
It could potentially be guided through training.
Repeated exposure.
Combat.
Different environments.
Different enemies.
Different abilities.
He could deliberately push his body toward specific forms of adaptation.
But there was a problem.
“You can't force evolution.”
“No.”
“You can only create conditions for it.”
“Yes.”
Kael nodded.
“That means reckless training could still fail.”
“Or produce something you don't want.”
Kael's expression became serious.
“That matters.”
The Sovereign smiled.
“Now you understand.”
The Soul Realm's Third Trial
The Soul Realm suddenly changed.
The endless blue space disappeared.
Kael found himself standing in a vast gray landscape.
No Soul Flame.
No weapons.
No Sovereign.
A voice echoed.
“Adapt.”
Kael frowned.
“Against what?”
Silence.
Then—
the environment changed.
The temperature dropped.
Rapidly.
Frost covered the ground.
Kael's body began shaking.
[Extreme cold detected.]
[Environmental adaptation response.]
Kael immediately activated his bloodline instinctively.
Nothing happened.
Metal Control was suppressed.
He couldn't create heat.
He couldn't use his equipment.
He had to rely on himself.
The cold intensified.
Kael clenched his teeth.
The System appeared.
[Vitality adaptation required.]
He moved.
Running.
Not for training.
For survival.
The landscape stretched endlessly.
The cold followed.
Kael kept moving.
Minutes passed.
Then hours.
Or what felt like hours.
The environment changed again.
Heat.
Extreme.
Kael stopped.
The cold vanished.
Now the landscape became unbearably hot.
[Thermal adaptation required.]
Kael moved again.
Then—
pressure.
Water.
Darkness.
Silence.
Lack of oxygen.
Each environment changed before Kael could fully adapt.
He had no weapons.
No monsters.
No direct opponent.
Only the environment.
The test was brutally simple.
Survive.
The System kept recording.
[Environmental adaptation acquired.]
[Thermal resistance: Minor.]
[Pressure tolerance: Minor.]
[Sensory deprivation resistance: Minor.]
[Recovery efficiency: Minor.]
Kael stared.
“These aren't powers.”
The voice answered.
“They are foundations.”
Kael understood.
Evolution wasn't giving him flashy abilities.
It was building a body capable of surviving increasingly impossible environments.
He stood in the darkness.
Then—
the Bone Sovereign appeared.
“You have learned the second lesson.”
Kael looked at it.
“What?”
“Strength is not only what you can destroy.”
The Sovereign pointed toward Kael.
“It is also what you can survive.”
Evolution Has a Cost
Kael suddenly felt something wrong.
His body was exhausted.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
The System displayed:
[Evolution Progress: 1.2%]
Then another message appeared.
[Warning.]
[Adaptation accumulation causes physiological strain.]
Kael frowned.
“Strain?”
The Sovereign nodded.
“Your body changes because it must.”
“And?”
“Every change has a cost.”
Kael looked at the System.
[Current evolutionary strain: 17%]
His expression hardened.
“So if I keep forcing adaptation…”
“You may destabilize your own body.”
Kael thought carefully.
That meant evolution wasn't a free power-up.
He couldn't simply throw himself into every dangerous environment.
Too much adaptation too quickly could damage his body.
He would need recovery.
Study.
Controlled exposure.
The same approach he had used with Metal Control.
Kael nodded.
“I understand.”
The Sovereign smiled.
“You learn quickly.”
Kael looked at it.
“I have a lot of practice.”
Returning to Battle
The Soul Realm vanished.
Kael returned to the Bone Domain.
The ruins remained.
The collapsed skeleton army remained.
The Soul Furnace was silent.
The Bone Sovereign stood before him.
But Kael immediately noticed something.
The Sovereign looked weaker.
Its Soul Flame was smaller.
The battle had consumed a great deal of its power.
The System updated.
[Bone Sovereign Soul Integrity: 83% → 76%]
Kael tightened his grip.
The Sovereign noticed.
“You see it.”
“Yes.”
“My Soul Realm consumes my own Soul energy.”
Kael nodded.
“So maintaining it weakened you.”
“Yes.”
“And now we're back in reality.”
“Yes.”
Kael smiled.
“Then my timing is good.”
The Sovereign raised an eyebrow.
“You intend to attack immediately.”
“Yes.”
Kael charged.
Soul Blade
The Origin Blade moved.
The Sovereign formed a Soul weapon.
A long blade.
The two collided.
CLANG!
Kael changed direction.
The Sovereign blocked.
Kael attacked again.
The Sovereign's defense was still precise.
But Kael's Soul Perception had increased.
His evolution had begun.
His reaction speed had improved.
He no longer needed to consciously process every Soul movement.
His body predicted.
The Sovereign struck.
Kael moved before the attack fully formed.
A second strike.
Kael ducked.
A third.
He stepped through.
The Origin Blade struck the Sovereign's chest.
SLASH!
The Soul armor cracked.
The System appeared.
[Bone Sovereign Soul Integrity: 76% → 72%]
The Sovereign stepped back.
Kael smiled.
“Better.”
The Sovereign looked at him.
“Much.”
Then its body changed.
The Soul Flame condensed.
The creature's skeleton became denser.
Its blue runes moved.
The Sovereign was adapting too.
Kael's expression changed.
“You can evolve as well.”
“I can adapt.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
The Sovereign shook its head.
“You evolve through your body.”
Its Soul Flame brightened.
“I evolve through my Soul.”
Kael narrowed his eyes.
“So we're doing this.”
“Yes.”
The two moved.
Evolution Versus Soul Mastery
The fight became different.
Kael's body learned.
The Sovereign's Soul learned.
Every time Kael adapted to an attack—
the Sovereign changed the attack.
Every time the Sovereign adapted to Kael's movement—
Kael changed his movement.
Neither could maintain an advantage.
Kael attacked with minimal motion.
The Sovereign countered with minimal energy.
Their battle became increasingly efficient.
Kael's Soul Resistance:
44%.
47%.
50%.
The Sovereign's Soul armor:
72%.
69%.
65%.
Kael noticed the relationship.
His resistance was increasing.
The Sovereign's defenses were decreasing.
The longer they fought—
the closer they became.
But Kael's immortality timer was also falling.
[Legendary Immortality Remaining: 20:31:04]
He couldn't take forever.
The Sovereign suddenly raised its hand.
A white sphere appeared.
Kael immediately recognized it.
The same spatial-Soul compression attack from earlier.
He moved.
The sphere followed.
Kael changed direction.
It followed again.
He jumped.
It followed.
The attack wasn't targeting his position.
It was tracking his Soul signature.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
I can't outrun it.
He stopped.
The Sovereign watched.
The sphere approached.
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
He didn't block.
He cut.
SLASH!
The sphere split.
Kael's Soul energy shook.
The System flashed.
[Soul Resistance: 50% → 54%]
Kael exhaled.
“That works.”
The Sovereign looked genuinely surprised.
“You cut a Soul-tracking attack.”
Kael smiled.
“The sword is learning.”
The Origin Blade hummed.
[Origin Resonance: 21% → 24%]
The blade's silver edge brightened.
Kael looked at it.
“Looks like I'm learning too.”
The Sovereign raised its hand.
A second sphere appeared.
Then a third.
Kael's expression changed.
“Oh, come on.”
The Sovereign smiled.
“Adapt.”
The First Evolution
Kael moved.
Three Soul spheres followed.
He couldn't cut all of them.
One exploded near him.
The blast shook his Soul.
Another struck his shoulder.
The third came from behind.
Kael turned.
Too slow.
He died.
Five seconds later—
Kael reformed.
The System immediately appeared.
[Extreme Soul Exposure detected.]
[Repeated adaptation threshold reached.]
[Evolutionary Progress: 1.2% → 2%]
Kael stared.
“Two percent.”
The Sovereign looked at him.
“You reached another threshold.”
“What happens?”
Kael felt something.
His perception expanded.
For a brief moment—
he could see the soul structure of the battlefield.
The Bone Sovereign's Soul Flame.
The Soul barriers.
The remnants of the black thread.
The faint energy flowing through the air.
Everything became clearer.
The System displayed:
[Evolutionary Adaptation: Soul Sight.]
Kael's eyes widened.
[Soul Sight]
Allows the host to perceive Soul energy, Soul structures, and certain hidden spiritual connections.
Kael smiled.
“That is useful.”
The Sovereign stared.
“You evolved a perception trait.”
“Looks like it.”
The Sovereign's expression became thoughtful.
“Interesting.”
Kael looked at the remaining Soul spheres.
Now—
he could see their cores.
Their tracking links.
Their structure.
He could see where each would move before it moved.
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
The first sphere approached.
He cut its core.
SLASH!
It disappeared.
The second.
SLASH!
Gone.
The third.
Kael didn't attack.
He grabbed it with his soul perception.
Then redirected it.
The sphere changed direction.
It struck the Sovereign.
BOOM!
The Bone Sovereign stepped backward.
Kael smiled.
“That's new.”
The Sovereign looked at him.
“Yes.”
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
“And I like it.”
The Sovereign's Counter
The Bone Sovereign suddenly closed its eyes.
Kael stopped.
Soul Sight showed something strange.
The Sovereign's Soul Flame began separating.
Not weakening.
Splitting.
One flame.
Two.
Three.
Kael's expression changed.
“Three Souls?”
“No.”
The Sovereign smiled.
“Three perspectives.”
The three Soul flames moved independently.
One attacked from the left.
One from the right.
One from above.
Kael's Soul Sight tracked all three.
But something was wrong.
They weren't illusions.
They were simultaneous processing streams.
The Sovereign could now attack from multiple directions while thinking through each one independently.
Kael blocked the first.
Dodged the second.
The third struck.
Kael was thrown backward.
He died.
Reformation.
The three flames remained.
Kael narrowed his eyes.
The evolution had given him Soul Sight.
The Sovereign had answered with Soul Division.
The battle had entered a completely new stage.
Kael smiled.
“Fine.”
He raised the Origin Blade.
“You adapt.”
The three flames moved.
“I evolve.”
The Bone Sovereign's flames brightened.
“Then let us see which process survives longer.”
Kael charged.
The three Soul flames attacked simultaneously.
The Origin Blade flashed.
The battlefield exploded with blue and silver light.
And while the two beings fought—
far beneath the central black tower—
the containment system continued falling.
[Central Containment Integrity: 48% → 43%]
Something inside the tower whispered:
“The third lock is almost gone.”
A pause.
Then—
“Excellent.”
Back in the Bone Domain, Kael's System flashed once more.
[Evolution Progress: 2%]
[Next Evolution Threshold: Unknown]
Kael stared at the message.
Then at the three Soul flames.
His smile disappeared.
He finally understood the truth.
The Bone Sovereign was not merely the strongest of the three Beasts.
It was the one that could learn from him at the same speed he learned from it.
And this time—
Kael could not afford to let the battle continue forever.
