THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 114 — The Fifth Path
The Soul Realm disappeared.
Kael opened his eyes.
He was standing inside the enormous Soul Chamber once again.
The blue darkness had returned.
The massive Soul Core floated before him.
The Ancient Soul Chain remained wrapped around it.
But one part of the chain had changed.
The fifth segment was open.
Black light poured from it.
Kael stared at the symbol inside.
Five paths.
A circular mark around them.
The same symbol that had appeared on the Darven Origin Blade.
The same symbol he had seen in the ancient forging vision.
His breathing slowed.
“The fifth path…”
The Bone Sovereign stood beside him.
Its blue Soul Flame flickered violently.
“Kael.”
He didn't respond.
The black symbol pulsed.
Once.
Twice.
Then—
[Unknown Bloodline Resonance detected.]
[Fifth Path compatibility: 6% → 8%]
[Evolutionary Progress: 3.1%]
Kael's eyes widened.
“It really is connected to my bloodline.”
The Sovereign shook its head.
“Not your bloodline.”
Kael looked at it.
“Then what?”
“Your bloodline is connected to it.”
Kael frowned.
“That sounds like the same thing.”
“It isn't.”
The Sovereign pointed toward the five-pointed symbol.
“The bloodline existed before the Darven family.”
Kael remembered what the ancient records had revealed.
His family hadn't created the bloodline.
They had inherited it.
But this was different.
The fifth path appeared to exist beyond the known network.
Outside the normal rules.
Kael stared at the black mark.
“Then what was the first Darven doing here?”
The Sovereign answered quietly.
“Trying to understand it.”
The Forgotten Path
Kael approached the fifth segment.
The Bone Sovereign immediately moved in front of him.
“Stop.”
Kael paused.
“You told me not to touch it.”
“Yes.”
“And now I'm listening.”
The Sovereign seemed surprised.
Kael continued.
“I want information first.”
The creature lowered its hand.
“That is wiser.”
Kael looked toward the symbol.
“Tell me everything you know.”
The Sovereign remained silent for a long moment.
Then—
“The ancient network recognized three primary paths.”
Kael listened.
“Authority.”
“Territory.”
“Containment.”
The Sovereign raised one finger.
“The fourth path was created later.”
Kael remembered the Fourth Path that had once appeared inside the ancient network.
“And the fifth?”
The Sovereign looked at the mark.
“The fifth was never accepted by the system.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
Kael narrowed his eyes.
“Someone had to attempt it.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
The Sovereign's blue flames dimmed.
“Your first ancestor.”
Kael froze.
“The first Darven?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“He discovered that the network could not define every form of power.”
Kael stared.
“So he created another path.”
“No.”
The Sovereign shook its head.
“He discovered one.”
A pause.
“The fifth path already existed.”
Kael's expression changed.
“Outside the network.”
“Yes.”
“And my ancestor found it.”
“Yes.”
“What did he do with it?”
The Sovereign looked toward the black symbol.
“He tried to bring it inside.”
Kael immediately understood the problem.
“And the network rejected it.”
“Yes.”
“The Core rejected it.”
“Yes.”
“And that created the lost branch.”
“Not exactly.”
Kael frowned.
“Then what did it create?”
The Sovereign answered:
“A contradiction.”
The Contradiction
Kael stared at the symbol.
The word echoed in his mind.
A contradiction.
The network had rules.
The fifth path didn't fit those rules.
The Darven bloodline had inherited something the network couldn't completely classify.
That could explain why the System repeatedly failed to analyze parts of Kael's bloodline.
Why the Origin Blade reacted to unknown authority.
Why Erynd had spoken about a path outside the network.
Why the Core had rejected him.
And why Kael's own evolution system had appeared only now.
Kael looked at his hand.
“The System can't identify the origin of my bloodline.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“Because the system wasn't designed for it.”
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“So when it displays ‘unknown’…”
“It means the bloodline is outside its classification.”
Kael slowly smiled.
“That changes everything.”
The Sovereign's expression remained serious.
“It also creates danger.”
“What danger?”
“The network may attempt to correct you.”
Kael's smile disappeared.
“Correct me?”
“Remove anything it cannot classify.”
Kael looked toward the black symbol again.
“That explains Erynd.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“He was not rejected because he was weak.”
“He was rejected because the system could not process his path.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“So the fifth path isn't necessarily forbidden because it's evil.”
“No.”
“It's forbidden because the network doesn't understand it.”
“Yes.”
A long silence followed.
Then the black symbol pulsed again.
The Ancient Soul Chain tightened.
BOOM!
The chamber shook.
The Bone Sovereign immediately looked upward.
“Enough.”
Kael turned.
“What?”
“The prison noticed our conversation.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“How?”
“The fifth segment is part of the central lock.”
“And now it's active.”
“Yes.”
A System notification appeared.
[Foreign Authority synchronization detected.]
[Central Prison response initiated.]
[Containment correction beginning.]
Kael stared.
“What happens during correction?”
The Sovereign answered:
“It will attempt to remove the contradiction.”
Kael looked at the black symbol.
“Me.”
“Yes.”
The Correction
The black chain suddenly moved.
Its five segments separated.
The first four remained around the Soul Core.
The fifth turned toward Kael.
A black line extended from the chain.
The Sovereign immediately stepped forward.
“Move.”
Kael didn't.
The black line approached.
It didn't feel like an attack.
It felt like an examination.
Something was trying to identify him.
The System flashed repeatedly.
[Unknown authority scanning host.]
[Bloodline classification attempt.]
[Classification failed.]
[Second attempt.]
[Classification failed.]
Kael felt pressure spreading through his body.
His bloodline responded.
The Darven mark appeared beneath his skin.
Then—
the five-path symbol appeared over it.
The pressure intensified.
[Correction attempt initiated.]
Kael clenched his fists.
“What is it trying to do?”
The Sovereign answered:
“Force your bloodline into an accepted category.”
Kael's eyes hardened.
“No.”
The pressure increased.
His vision blurred.
The System flashed.
[Possible classifications detected.]
[Path One.]
[Path Two.]
[Path Three.]
[Path Four.]
Then—
[Unknown.]
Kael's body resisted.
The pressure became overwhelming.
His Soul Adaptation activated.
[Adaptation response.]
[Foreign authority exposure detected.]
[Resistance: 0% → 2%]
Kael gritted his teeth.
The fifth symbol became brighter.
The black correction line began breaking apart.
The Sovereign stared.
“You're resisting.”
Kael forced himself upright.
“It wants to classify me.”
“Yes.”
“What happens if it succeeds?”
“You lose access to whatever lies beyond its categories.”
Kael smiled.
“Then it won't succeed.”
The System Evolves
The pressure increased again.
Kael's System began flickering.
For a moment—
the usual blue interface disappeared.
A black interface appeared instead.
Kael froze.
[System architecture conflict detected.]
[Standard evolution framework incompatible.]
[Bloodline framework incompatible.]
[Administrator framework incompatible.]
Kael's eyes widened.
Then—
a fourth message appeared.
[External evolutionary framework detected.]
[Would you like to establish compatibility?]
Kael stared.
The Bone Sovereign looked at him.
“What do you see?”
Kael's eyes remained fixed on the screen.
“A choice.”
“What kind?”
Kael read it again.
[Establish compatibility with Fifth Path evolutionary framework?]
[Warning: Confirmation will create irreversible divergence from standard evolutionary pathways.]
Kael looked at the Sovereign.
“What happens if I accept?”
“I don't know.”
“And if I reject?”
“You remain within the known system.”
Kael thought about the network.
The three official paths.
The Fourth Path.
The rejected fifth.
His bloodline.
His evolution.
His entire inheritance.
Everything he had learned suggested that the known system had limits.
And he had already decided he wanted to go beyond them.
Kael looked back at the screen.
“There's only one answer.”
He touched Confirm.
The chamber exploded with light.
Fifth Path Compatibility
[Confirmation received.]
[Fifth Path evolutionary framework established.]
[Compatibility: 0%]
[Evolution Progress: 3.1% → 3.4%]
Kael staggered.
His body didn't suddenly become stronger.
Instead—
something changed inside his System.
A new section appeared.
[EVOLUTION]
Current Stage: Initial
Progress: 3.4%
Adaptive Traits:
- Soul Adaptation
- Soul Resistance
- Soul Sight
- Minor Thermal Resistance
- Minor Pressure Resistance
- Recovery Efficiency
Fifth Path Compatibility: 1%
Kael stared.
The list was small.
But it was real.
He had a separate evolutionary system now.
Not just levels.
Not just bloodline.
Not just skills.
Evolution.
Kael smiled.
“So this is the beginning.”
The Bone Sovereign looked at the new screen.
“You accepted.”
“Yes.”
“Then the network will no longer be able to fully predict you.”
Kael nodded.
“Good.”
The Sovereign's expression became grim.
“It also means the central system may eventually recognize you as an independent authority.”
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“And then?”
“Then it may consider you a threat.”
Kael looked toward the black chain.
“I'm already being hunted.”
The Fifth Segment Attacks
The black segment suddenly moved.
Kael turned.
The unknown symbol released a wave of energy.
It wasn't aimed at the Sovereign.
It was aimed directly at Kael.
The attack struck.
Kael's body froze.
The System flashed.
[Fifth Path interference detected.]
Kael's soul shook.
The attack wasn't trying to injure him.
It was trying to connect.
His vision changed.
For an instant—
he saw the entire pocket world.
The Shadow Domain.
The Verdant Domain.
The Bone Domain.
The central white plain.
The black tower.
And beneath everything—
a vast network.
Ancient.
Enormous.
Almost impossible to comprehend.
Then he saw five symbols.
Three were bright.
One was dim.
The fifth was completely black.
The first four were connected to the central tower.
The fifth was not.
Kael understood.
The fifth path wasn't another branch inside the network.
It was an independent route.
A route that could exist without the network.
The vision vanished.
Kael gasped.
The Sovereign stared.
“What did you see?”
Kael slowly answered:
“The fifth path doesn't belong to the prison.”
“What?”
“It exists outside it.”
The Sovereign remained silent.
Kael continued.
“And that's why the network couldn't contain it.”
The black symbol pulsed.
[Fifth Path Compatibility: 1% → 2%]
Kael looked at it.
Then—
the symbol suddenly released another pulse.
This time, the Ancient Soul Chain reacted violently.
CRACK!
A small fracture appeared on the fifth segment.
The Bone Sovereign froze.
“No.”
Kael turned.
“What?”
“That segment cannot break.”
The fracture widened.
CRACK.
Kael's expression changed.
“Why?”
The Sovereign raised its hand.
“Because the fifth segment is not a prison lock.”
Kael stared.
“Then what is it?”
The Sovereign's voice became quiet.
“The key.”
The Key
Kael's eyes widened.
“The fifth segment is a key?”
“Yes.”
“To the central prison?”
“No.”
The Sovereign looked toward the black light.
“To everything.”
Kael frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“The five paths aren't merely classifications.”
The Sovereign pointed toward the symbol.
“They are principles.”
“Principles of what?”
“Connection.”
Kael listened.
“Metal.”
“Shadow.”
“Nature.”
“Death.”
The Sovereign's gaze fixed on the fifth symbol.
“And the fifth…”
A pause.
“…is Change.”
Kael froze.
Change.
Evolution.
Adaptation.
The fifth path wasn't a power category like the others.
It was the principle that allowed something to become something else.
It explained the evolution system.
It explained Kael's body.
It explained why the path remained outside the network.
Because change itself couldn't be permanently classified.
Kael stared.
“So my evolution…”
“May be the fifth path expressing itself through you.”
Kael's expression changed.
That meant his ability to adapt wasn't merely a biological trait.
It might be inherited from an ancient principle.
Something older than the Darven family.
Older than the network.
Perhaps even older than the prison itself.
The Bone Sovereign's Choice
The Bone Sovereign suddenly looked toward the Ancient Soul Chain.
“Kael.”
“What?”
“You must leave.”
Kael frowned.
“What?”
“The Soul Chamber is no longer stable.”
The black fifth segment continued cracking.
The central prison had noticed the fifth path activation.
And something was responding.
The System flashed.
[Central Containment Integrity: 38% → 34%]
Kael's expression hardened.
“We don't have time.”
“No.”
The Sovereign raised its hand.
“But I can delay the response.”
“How?”
“By defeating you.”
Kael blinked.
“You're exhausted.”
“So are you.”
“You'll lose.”
The Bone Sovereign smiled.
“That is the point.”
Kael's expression changed.
“You're going to sacrifice yourself to stabilize the chain.”
“No.”
The Sovereign shook its head.
“I am going to fulfill my function.”
Kael stared.
“You are the final guardian.”
“Yes.”
“Then if I defeat you…”
“The burden transfers.”
Kael looked toward the black tower.
“And if you don't fight me?”
The Sovereign answered:
“The central prison eventually reaches the same point.”
Kael clenched his fist.
“So either way…”
“Yes.”
The Sovereign raised its hand.
Blue Soul energy gathered.
“But there is a difference.”
“What?”
“You can choose how it happens.”
Kael understood.
The final fight wasn't merely about defeating the Beast.
It was about defeating it correctly.
Without destroying its Core.
Without breaking the chain.
Without allowing the central prison to collapse.
And while the fifth path remained active—
everything had become far more unstable.
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
“Then let's finish this.”
The Bone Sovereign smiled.
“Now you understand.”
The Final Lock
The Soul Chamber began collapsing.
The fifth segment cracked again.
CRACK!
The black symbol released a pulse.
Kael's Evolution system activated.
[Evolution Progress: 3.4%]
[Fifth Path Compatibility: 2%]
[New evolutionary directive detected.]
[Adapt.]
Kael stared at the word.
Then—
the Bone Sovereign attacked.
A massive Soul blade formed.
Kael moved.
The battle resumed.
But this time—
Kael wasn't trying to destroy the Sovereign.
He was trying to suppress it.
The Sovereign wasn't trying to kill Kael.
It was trying to force him to understand the final rule.
Every strike mattered.
Every exchange changed the Core.
Every death gave Kael more information.
The Origin Blade struck.
The Soul Core pulsed.
Kael retreated.
The Sovereign countered.
Kael died.
Five seconds later—
he returned.
Again.
He attacked.
The Sovereign adapted.
Kael changed.
The Sovereign changed.
The Core began weakening.
[Soul Core Integrity: 72% → 68%]
Kael saw an opening.
He didn't take it.
Instead, he redirected the attack.
The chain remained intact.
[Containment stability preserved.]
Another opening.
Again, Kael held back.
He was learning restraint.
The Sovereign noticed.
“You finally understand.”
Kael attacked.
The Origin Blade touched the Core.
Then withdrew.
“I don't need to destroy you.”
The Sovereign blocked.
Kael stepped inside.
“I only need to bring you to the point where you can't continue.”
The Bone Sovereign smiled.
“Exactly.”
The battle intensified.
Soul Core: 68%.
61%.
54%.
The chain remained intact.
The black fifth segment continued cracking.
The timer continued.
[Legendary Immortality Remaining: 16:11:43]
Kael's body adapted.
Soul Resistance increased.
Evolution Progress rose.
The Sovereign's Soul Flame weakened.
Then—
Kael saw the moment.
One final opening.
The true Core was exposed.
He raised the Origin Blade.
The blade glowed silver-blue.
The Bone Sovereign didn't defend.
Kael struck.
BOOM!
The sword stopped just before the true Core.
A wave of suppressive resonance passed through the Soul.
[Soul Core suppression initiated.]
[Core Integrity stabilized at 31%.]
The Bone Sovereign's entire body froze.
The Soul Flame dimmed.
The Ancient Soul Chain tightened—
then stopped.
The System flashed.
[Combat output reduced below critical threshold.]
[Bone Sovereign: Subdued.]
Kael slowly lowered the blade.
Silence filled the chamber.
The Bone Sovereign remained standing.
Then—
it bowed its head.
“You have passed.”
Kael exhaled.
“Then it's over.”
The Sovereign looked toward the fifth segment.
“No.”
Kael's expression changed.
The black symbol had stopped cracking.
Instead—
it was opening.
And beyond it was not darkness.
There was a door.
Ancient.
Black.
Covered in the same five-path symbol.
Kael stared.
The System appeared.
[Hidden structure detected.]
[Classification: Unknown.]
[Function: Unknown.]
[Access condition: Fifth Path compatibility required.]
Kael slowly raised his hand.
The Bone Sovereign's voice became quiet.
“That door has never opened.”
Kael looked at it.
“Until now.”
The symbol pulsed.
[Fifth Path Compatibility: 2% → 3%]
The door began to move.
A thin gap appeared.
And from the other side—
someone spoke.
Not the ancient entity.
Not the System.
Not the Sovereign.
A human voice.
“Kael Darven.”
Kael froze.
The voice continued.
“You took longer than the others.”
The Bone Sovereign's Soul Flame flickered violently.
Kael stared at the opening.
Then the voice whispered:
“But you finally found the Fifth Path.”
The door opened another inch.
And behind it—
stood a man wearing ancient black armor.
Silver eyes.
A Darven mark glowing across his chest.
Kael's eyes widened.
He recognized the face.
Not from a memory.
Not from a recording.
From the stories of his own bloodline.
Erynd Darven.
The man looked directly at him.
And smiled.
