THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 115 — The Man Beyond the Door
Kael stared at the figure beyond the opening.
Ancient black armor.
Silver eyes.
A circular Darven mark glowing across his chest.
There was no mistaking the face.
He had seen it before.
Not in person.
Not in a memory.
In the ancient records.
Erynd Darven.
Kael's grip tightened around the Origin Blade.
The Bone Sovereign remained motionless behind him.
Its Soul Flame flickered violently.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Kael finally said:
“Erynd.”
The man smiled.
“You remember.”
Kael stepped forward.
“How are you here?”
Erynd looked down at his own hands.
“I'm not.”
Kael frowned.
“What?”
Erynd raised one hand.
A faint distortion passed through his body.
For a moment, Kael could see the darkness behind him.
There was no physical body.
Only light.
Soul energy.
And something even stranger.
Kael immediately activated Soul Sight.
The figure changed.
[Target detected.]
[Name: Erynd Darven]
[Physical status: None]
[Soul presence: Partial]
[Classification: Bloodline Echo / ???]
[Origin: Fifth Path]
Kael's eyes widened.
“A bloodline echo.”
Erynd smiled.
“Good.”
“You aren't actually here.”
“No.”
“Then where are you?”
Erynd pointed toward the black door.
“Between places.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“That explains nothing.”
“It wasn't supposed to.”
The Bone Sovereign spoke from behind him.
“I warned you.”
Kael looked back.
The Sovereign's Soul Flame remained subdued.
But its expression had changed.
“You know him.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“I know the imprint.”
“Not the man?”
“No.”
Erynd looked at the Bone Sovereign.
“You remember more than most.”
The Sovereign's flames flickered.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“When the Fifth Path was first opened.”
Erynd's smile disappeared.
“I was there.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“Then tell me what happened.”
Erynd looked directly at him.
“That is not a story you should hear yet.”
Kael stepped closer.
“My family was destroyed.”
“I know.”
“My ancestors came here.”
“I know.”
“My bloodline is connected to this prison.”
“Yes.”
“The Fifth Path is part of my inheritance.”
“Yes.”
Kael's voice hardened.
“Then I deserve answers.”
Erynd remained silent.
Then he said:
“Answers are dangerous when you're too weak to survive them.”
Kael's expression became cold.
“I've survived plenty.”
Erynd smiled faintly.
“You survived because the world kept giving you enemies you could learn from.”
He pointed toward the Bone Sovereign.
“But the things beyond this door…”
His expression became serious.
“…won't give you time to learn.”
The Fifth Path Door
Kael turned toward the door.
It was completely black.
Five symbols were engraved across its surface.
Four were faint.
The fifth glowed.
The exact same circular symbol existed on the Origin Blade.
Kael reached toward it.
Erynd immediately said:
“Don't.”
Kael stopped.
“Why?”
“Because the door isn't an entrance.”
Kael frowned.
“Then what is it?”
“A filter.”
“For what?”
Erynd looked at the fifth symbol.
“To determine whether you're allowed to continue.”
Kael's expression changed.
The System activated.
[Unknown Gate detected.]
[Fifth Path compatibility required.]
[Current compatibility: 3%]
[Access probability: Unknown.]
Kael stared.
“Three percent.”
Erynd nodded.
“You should be grateful.”
“For three percent?”
“For not having zero.”
Kael looked at him.
“What happens if I force it open?”
Erynd's silver eyes became cold.
“You won't open it.”
“You'll open yourself.”
Kael paused.
“That sounds bad.”
“It is.”
The Bone Sovereign spoke.
“The Fifth Path is not something that can simply be entered.”
Kael looked between them.
“Then how do I use it?”
Erynd answered:
“You don't.”
Kael frowned.
“It uses you.”
Silence.
The words settled heavily inside the Soul Chamber.
Kael looked at his Evolution screen.
[Fifth Path Compatibility: 3%]
[Evolution Progress: 3.4%]
He finally understood why the system warned him about irreversible divergence.
The Fifth Path wasn't another skill tree.
It was a different way of existing.
And the more compatible he became—
the less predictable his future would be.
Erynd's Warning
Kael looked at Erynd.
“You mentioned the others.”
Erynd's expression changed.
“The other Darvens.”
“Yes.”
“Seran.”
“Darian.”
“And my father.”
Erynd nodded.
“My father disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Seran disappeared too.”
“Yes.”
“Darian is still searching.”
“Yes.”
Kael stepped closer.
“And you?”
Erynd looked toward the darkness behind the door.
“I stopped searching.”
“Why?”
“Because I found what they were searching for.”
Kael froze.
“The Origin?”
“No.”
“The Fifth Path?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Erynd answered quietly:
“The reason the network exists.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
The Bone Sovereign's Soul Flame flickered.
Erynd continued.
“The prison is old.”
“The network is older than your family.”
“The bloodline is older than the network.”
“And the thing beneath the tower…”
His expression became grim.
“…is older than all three.”
Kael stared.
“What is it?”
Erynd shook his head.
“Not yet.”
Kael's fists tightened.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because you keep asking questions whose answers would get you killed.”
Kael looked at the subdued Bone Sovereign.
“I'm already fighting a Legendary Beast.”
Erynd smiled.
“Yes.”
“And I'm still alive.”
“For now.”
Kael didn't like the answer.
The Bone Sovereign's Choice
The Bone Sovereign slowly raised its hand.
Kael turned.
The Sovereign's Soul Flame remained weak.
Its Core was suppressed.
The Ancient Soul Chain remained intact.
But something was changing.
Blue light gathered around its chest.
Kael immediately noticed.
“You're recovering.”
“Slowly.”
“How long?”
“Long enough.”
The Bone Sovereign looked at Erynd.
“You came because the Fifth Path activated.”
Erynd nodded.
“I came because the Fifth Path was recognized.”
“And?”
“The prison will respond.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“What kind of response?”
Erynd looked toward the central black tower.
“The correction.”
Kael sighed.
“Again?”
“This time is different.”
“How?”
Erynd looked at Kael.
“Last time, the prison tried to classify you.”
“And now?”
“Now it knows you cannot be classified.”
The chamber trembled.
The black Soul Chain tightened.
The System appeared.
[Central Containment Integrity: 38% → 35%]
Kael's expression changed.
The number continued falling.
34%.
33%.
The Bone Sovereign looked at him.
“This is what I warned you about.”
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
“We need to stop it.”
Erynd shook his head.
“No.”
Kael turned.
“What?”
“You can't stop it.”
“Then what do we do?”
“Choose which part of the system breaks first.”
Kael stared at him.
“That's your solution?”
“Yes.”
“That sounds terrible.”
Erynd smiled faintly.
“It is.”
The Three Locks
Erynd walked closer to the edge of the opening.
His projection became slightly clearer.
“The Shadow Lock.”
Kael listened.
“The Verdant Lock.”
Then—
“The Bone Lock.”
Erynd looked toward the Soul Core.
“You've defeated two.”
“Three.”
“Not yet.”
Kael frowned.
The Bone Sovereign spoke.
“I am subdued.”
Erynd nodded.
“But not defeated.”
Kael understood.
The system had not yet completed the Beast's final condition.
The Bone Sovereign's combat ability was suppressed, but its Soul Core was still stable.
The battle wasn't truly finished.
Erynd continued.
“When the third lock is fully defeated…”
Kael waited.
“The central prison will lose its final stabilizer.”
The number dropped again.
[Central Containment Integrity: 33%]
Kael's expression became serious.
“But the Soul Sovereign is still carrying the burden.”
Erynd nodded.
“You must decide whether to kill it…”
Kael immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Erynd smiled.
“Good.”
“…or defeat it without destroying the lock.”
“Yes.”
Kael looked at the Bone Sovereign.
That meant the pattern of the previous Beasts remained.
Subdue.
Preserve.
Separate.
But this time—
the central prison was already much closer to failure.
He couldn't take as long as before.
The Bone Sovereign Rises
The Bone Sovereign's Soul Flame suddenly expanded.
Kael raised his sword.
“What are you doing?”
The Sovereign answered:
“Finishing the test.”
Its Soul Core pulsed.
[Core Integrity: 31%]
Then—
32%.
Kael frowned.
It was recovering.
Not through the Furnace.
Not through the prison.
Through itself.
The Sovereign stood upright.
The suppressed Soul Flame grew brighter.
Its skeletal body became more stable.
Erynd watched silently.
Kael looked at the Sovereign.
“You're restoring your power.”
“Yes.”
“So we can continue fighting.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
The Sovereign smiled.
“Enough.”
The System updated.
[Bone Sovereign]
[Soul Integrity: 32%]
[Combat Output: 41%]
[Ancient Soul Chain: Stable]
[Central Lock Status: Active]
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
“Then let's finish this properly.”
The Sovereign nodded.
The Final Suppression
Kael charged.
The Sovereign moved.
Their attacks collided.
BOOM!
Blue Soul energy and silver resonance spread across the chamber.
The Sovereign formed a blade.
Kael blocked.
Kael countered.
The Origin Blade struck the Soul Barrier.
CRACK!
The Sovereign retreated.
Kael followed.
The Beast created three Soul projections.
Kael used Soul Sight.
He ignored the projections.
He targeted the real Core.
The Sovereign changed positions.
Kael adapted.
The battle became brutally precise.
Neither was trying to destroy the other.
Every strike was designed to reduce combat output without touching the Soul Chain.
Kael attacked the outer Soul layer.
The Sovereign blocked.
Kael shifted.
The Origin Blade touched the Core shell.
[Combat Output: 41% → 36%]
The Sovereign retaliated.
Kael died.
Five seconds later—
He returned.
The Sovereign attacked.
Kael moved.
Origin Blade.
SLASH!
[36% → 32%]
Another attack.
Kael died.
Reformation.
He attacked again.
[32% → 28%]
The Sovereign's movement slowed.
Kael kept going.
Death.
Reformation.
Strike.
Retreat.
Strike.
The process repeated.
Then—
[Bone Sovereign Combat Output: 21%]
The Sovereign stepped backward.
Kael stopped.
The Beast looked at him.
“Enough.”
Kael lowered the blade.
“Why?”
“You have won.”
Kael stared.
The System appeared.
[Legendary Beast — Bone Sovereign]
[Combat capability reduced below required threshold.]
[Final Lock condition satisfied.]
Kael's eyes widened.
[Legendary Beast defeated.]
[State: Alive.]
[Soul Core preserved.]
[Ancient Soul Chain preserved.]
The Bone Sovereign lowered its head.
“You have defeated me.”
Kael exhaled.
The timer continued.
[Legendary Immortality Remaining: 13:08:42]
The System continued.
[Beast Path Compatibility: 14% → 21%]
[All Three Legendary Beast conditions fulfilled.]
Kael smiled.
“It worked.”
Then—
the entire chamber shook.
Erynd's expression changed.
“No.”
Kael turned.
“What?”
Erynd looked toward the black tower.
“The locks have been defeated.”
Kael's smile disappeared.
“What happens now?”
The answer came from the Bone Sovereign.
“The central prison loses its stabilizers.”
The System flashed.
[Shadow Lock — Defeated.]
[Verdant Lock — Defeated.]
[Bone Lock — Defeated.]
[Central Containment Integrity: 33% → 21%]
Kael's eyes widened.
“Twenty-one percent…”
The Soul Chamber cracked.
Erynd's projection began flickering.
Kael looked at him.
“You knew this would happen.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you let me continue?”
Erynd looked directly into his eyes.
“Because the three locks were never meant to hold forever.”
Kael froze.
“What?”
Erynd continued:
“They were meant to hold until someone capable of replacing them arrived.”
Silence.
Kael stared.
“Replacing them with what?”
Erynd looked at the Fifth Path symbol.
“With change.”
Kael's eyes widened.
“You mean me.”
Erynd didn't answer.
The black door behind him began opening wider.
Beyond it—
was a vast white space.
At its center stood a single black throne.
Empty.
Waiting.
The System appeared.
[New primary condition detected.]
[Replace the Three Locks.]
[Requirement: Fifth Path Compatibility — Unknown.]
Kael stared.
Then the black tower outside the chamber released a shockwave.
The entire pocket world trembled.
The Shadow Domain reacted.
The Verdant Domain reacted.
The Bone Domain reacted.
And deep beneath the central tower—
something finally moved.
A voice echoed through the entire pocket world.
“The locks have fallen.”
Kael's expression hardened.
The voice continued.
“Then the successor has finally arrived.”
Erynd looked at Kael.
For the first time—
he looked afraid.
Not for himself.
For Kael.
“Close the door.”
Kael stared.
“Why?”
“Because the thing beyond it…”
The black door opened another fraction.
Erynd's voice became quiet.
“…is not the Fifth Path.”
Kael froze.
“Then what is it?”
Erynd looked toward the black throne.
“The place where the Fifth Path was imprisoned.”
The Soul Chamber exploded with light.
The black door opened.
And the final stage of the pocket-world inheritance began.
