THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 116 — The Prison of Change
The Soul Chamber exploded with light.
Kael raised one arm in front of his face.
The Ancient Soul Chain screamed.
Not with sound—
but with pressure.
The entire chamber shook.
The black door beyond Erynd opened wider.
White light poured through the gap.
For the first time since entering the pocket world, Kael saw what lay beyond the boundary of the prison.
It wasn't another room.
It was a world.
An endless white plain stretched into the distance.
No sky.
No ground.
No horizon.
Everything was completely white.
And at its center—
stood a black throne.
Kael stared.
“That's where the Fifth Path was imprisoned?”
Erynd nodded.
“Yes.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“But there's nothing there.”
“There is now.”
The Bone Sovereign looked toward the opening.
Its blue Soul Flame flickered.
“The prison has been disturbed.”
Kael turned.
“Because the three locks are gone.”
“Yes.”
The System appeared.
[Central Containment Integrity: 21%]
[Warning.]
[Three primary stabilizers inactive.]
[Replacement protocol unavailable.]
[Fifth Path structure detected.]
Kael frowned.
“Replacement protocol unavailable.”
Erynd looked at the System.
“Of course.”
“What?”
“You are looking at the old system.”
Kael glanced at him.
“What does that mean?”
“It was designed to preserve the prison.”
Erynd pointed toward the white world.
“The Fifth Path was designed to change it.”
Kael stared.
“So the old System doesn't know how to handle it.”
“No.”
“And the replacement protocol…”
“Doesn't exist yet.”
Kael's expression became serious.
“Then why did my System give me the objective?”
Erynd's silver eyes narrowed.
“Because your System is beginning to create one.”
The Empty Throne
Kael stepped toward the doorway.
The Bone Sovereign immediately spoke.
“Do not enter.”
Kael stopped.
“Why?”
“The white world is not empty.”
Kael activated Soul Sight.
At first—
nothing.
Then he noticed faint lines.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Invisible connections stretched across the white plain.
They converged at the black throne.
Kael's eyes widened.
“The whole area is a formation.”
Erynd nodded.
“Not a formation.”
Kael frowned.
“Then what?”
“A rule.”
Kael looked at him.
“The difference?”
“A formation can be broken.”
Erynd pointed toward the white world.
“A rule has to be obeyed.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“What rule?”
Erynd's expression became grim.
“No change.”
Kael stared.
“For something called the Fifth Path?”
“Yes.”
“The place where Change was imprisoned…”
“…was built to prevent Change.”
Kael slowly understood.
The white world was not simply a prison.
It was the opposite of the Fifth Path.
A place where everything was frozen into a fixed state.
No evolution.
No transformation.
No adaptation.
Nothing could become different from what it already was.
Kael's Evolution window flickered.
[Foreign environment detected.]
[Evolutionary adaptation suppressed.]
[Change restriction: Active.]
Kael's eyes widened.
“My evolution is being suppressed.”
Erynd nodded.
“That's why you cannot enter carelessly.”
Kael stared into the white world.
“What happens if I do?”
“You become fixed.”
“Meaning?”
“You stop evolving.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“For how long?”
Erynd looked at the throne.
“Forever.”
The Black Throne
Kael didn't step through.
Instead, he studied the throne.
It was enormous.
Black stone.
Five grooves surrounded its base.
Four were empty.
The fifth contained a small fragment of something that looked like crystal.
Kael used Soul Sight.
Nothing.
Metal Control.
Nothing.
Administrator Authority.
Nothing.
The System couldn't analyze it.
[Classification failed.]
Kael frowned.
“Everything is unknown.”
Erynd smiled faintly.
“That's because you're trying to analyze the object.”
“What should I analyze?”
“The absence around it.”
Kael turned.
“What?”
“Look at what the throne does not contain.”
Kael stared.
The white plain had no dust.
No cracks.
No movement.
No energy fluctuations.
Nothing changed.
Nothing.
Kael's eyes widened.
“The environment is being forced to remain identical.”
“Yes.”
“The throne isn't generating the effect.”
“No.”
“It is enforcing it.”
“Yes.”
Kael's expression changed.
“So the throne is the source of the rule.”
Erynd nodded.
“And if I break it…”
“The prison becomes unstable.”
Kael looked at the three Beast domains behind him.
Shadow.
Verdant.
Bone.
All damaged.
All connected.
The central tower was already at 21%.
Breaking the throne could drop it even further.
Kael clenched his hand.
“We need another way.”
Erynd looked at him.
“Now you're thinking like a successor.”
The Three Beasts
A low growl came from behind.
Kael turned.
The Golden-Eyed Nightfang stood near the edge of the Soul Chamber.
But he wasn't alone.
Three enormous presences had appeared.
The Shadow Lion.
The Verdant Serpent.
The Bone Sovereign.
They had all been pulled toward the central prison.
The Shadow Lion's black fur rippled with crimson energy.
The Verdant Serpent rested its enormous head against the stone.
The Bone Sovereign stood between them and Kael.
For a moment—
the three Legendary Beasts looked at one another.
No one attacked.
The Shadow Lion spoke first.
“The locks are gone.”
The Verdant Serpent answered.
“The prison is collapsing.”
The Bone Sovereign added:
“And the Fifth Path has awakened.”
Kael looked at all three.
“You knew this would happen.”
The Shadow Lion's crimson eyes narrowed.
“We knew it was possible.”
The Serpent looked toward the white world.
“But not this quickly.”
Kael frowned.
“What changed?”
The Bone Sovereign answered.
“You.”
Silence.
Kael looked at his Evolution window.
[Fifth Path Compatibility: 3%]
The Shadow Lion's gaze moved toward it.
“You activated what the old network could not.”
Kael looked at the five-path symbol.
“Change.”
“Yes.”
The Verdant Serpent lowered its head.
“And the prison cannot contain Change indefinitely.”
Kael stared.
“Then why did you allow yourselves to become the locks?”
The Shadow Lion answered:
“We did not choose.”
The Bone Sovereign's voice was quiet.
“We were placed here.”
Kael's expression changed.
“You were prisoners.”
“Yes.”
“And the prison used you.”
“Yes.”
Kael looked at the white world.
“Then the three of you aren't the guardians.”
The Serpent's eyes narrowed.
“No.”
Kael finished:
“You are part of the prison.”
The three Beasts remained silent.
That was answer enough.
The Replacement
Kael turned toward the System.
“Give me the replacement conditions.”
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
“System.”
The interface flickered.
[Primary Objective unavailable.]
[Legacy protocol corrupted.]
Kael frowned.
“Corrupted?”
Erynd spoke.
“The old network doesn't recognize the Fifth Path.”
Kael looked at him.
“Then I need to make it recognize me.”
“No.”
Erynd shook his head.
“You need to make it recognize something else.”
“What?”
Erynd pointed at Kael.
“Change itself.”
Kael stared.
“That sounds impossible.”
Erynd smiled.
“That's why you're here.”
The System suddenly flickered.
The normal blue interface disappeared.
The black Evolution interface appeared.
[Fifth Path Framework active.]
[Current Principle: Change.]
[Existing System protocols insufficient.]
[New objective generation available.]
A new line appeared.
[Generate replacement protocol?]
Kael stared.
“This is different.”
The Bone Sovereign nodded.
“The old System gave you instructions.”
“The Fifth Path wants you to create them.”
Kael's expression hardened.
He touched Confirm.
The interface changed.
[FIFTH PATH — REPLACEMENT PROTOCOL]
Primary Requirement:
Create a new stabilizing principle.
Condition: The new principle must permit evolution without permitting uncontrolled collapse.
Current Stability: 21%
Failure State: Central Prison Breach
Reward: Unknown
Penalty: Unknown
Kael stared.
“That isn't a normal quest.”
“No,” Erynd said.
“It isn't.”
Kael looked at the three Beasts.
“How am I supposed to create a principle?”
The Shadow Lion answered:
“By understanding what each of us represents.”
The Serpent:
“Shadow.”
“Nature.”
The Bone Sovereign:
“Death.”
Kael looked toward the white world.
“And the Fifth Path?”
The three Beasts answered together.
“Change.”
The Problem With Change
Kael thought.
Shadow could exist without change.
Nature changed constantly.
Death was the end of change.
But Change itself—
was different.
Too much change caused instability.
Too little caused stagnation.
The old network had chosen control.
The Fifth Path demanded balance.
Kael looked toward the white plain.
“The prison suppresses change completely.”
“Yes.”
“If I destroy it, everything could change at once.”
“Yes.”
“And that could destroy the entire system.”
“Yes.”
“So I need controlled change.”
Erynd smiled.
“Exactly.”
Kael's eyes sharpened.
Not destruction.
Not preservation.
Evolution under limits.
A controlled process.
He understood why his own Evolution system had appeared.
It wasn't simply making him stronger.
It was teaching his body to change without collapsing.
Maybe that was the real Fifth Path.
Not endless evolution.
Directed evolution.
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
“I think I know what to do.”
The First Test
Kael walked to the boundary of the white world.
Erynd watched silently.
The three Beasts remained behind him.
Kael extended one foot.
The instant his boot touched the white ground—
the world changed.
His Evolution interface disappeared.
[Evolutionary Progress: Frozen.]
Kael's body became strangely still.
His senses dulled.
His muscles felt heavier.
Even his thoughts slowed.
The white world was trying to make him stop changing.
Kael immediately stepped backward.
The restriction disappeared.
He exhaled.
“It's stronger than I expected.”
The Bone Sovereign nodded.
“It is absolute.”
Kael looked at the boundary.
Then the Origin Blade.
Then the old containment structure.
An idea appeared.
He didn't have to enter as himself.
He could send something else inside.
Metal.
Kael extended his hand.
Metal Control.
A tiny metal sphere rose from the ground.
Kael placed it at the boundary.
The moment it crossed—
the sphere stopped.
No movement.
No change.
It became perfectly fixed.
Kael stared.
He manipulated it.
Nothing.
He changed its shape.
Nothing.
He increased mana.
Nothing.
The sphere was frozen.
Kael smiled.
“Interesting.”
Erynd looked at him.
“You found something.”
“The rule affects objects too.”
“Yes.”
“But objects don't need to evolve.”
Kael pointed toward the sphere.
“So I can test the boundary without risking myself.”
Erynd nodded.
Kael created another sphere.
Then another.
Then ten.
Each entered the white world.
Each froze.
Kael observed.
The first sphere remained untouched.
The second—
after several seconds—
developed a faint crack.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
The crack shouldn't have happened.
The environment prohibited change.
Yet something had altered.
Kael created more spheres.
He repeated the experiment.
One sphere.
Five.
Ten.
One hundred.
Eventually—
one changed.
Then another.
Kael stared.
[Foreign principle detected.]
The System appeared.
[Change resistance: 99.999%]
[Exception detected.]
[Source: Fifth Path compatibility.]
Kael's eyes widened.
The Fifth Path could still operate inside the white prison.
Not because it overpowered the rule.
Because it existed outside the rule.
That was the key.
Kael smiled.
“Change doesn't need to break the prison.”
The Shadow Lion looked at him.
“Then what does it need?”
Kael raised his hand.
“Permission.”
The New Lock
Kael began constructing something.
Not a weapon.
Not an artifact.
A principle.
He used tiny pieces of metal.
One became fixed.
Another remained adaptive.
A third changed between states.
Kael connected them.
The white world attempted to freeze the structure.
The Fifth Path resisted.
Kael continued.
The result was a strange metallic ring.
One half remained perfectly stable.
The other half could change.
The two halves coexisted.
Kael stared.
[Prototype detected.]
[Stable Change Loop.]
[Function: Permit controlled evolution inside fixed environments.]
His eyes widened.
It wasn't enough.
But it was proof.
The Fifth Path could create controlled change without destroying the prison.
Kael looked at Erynd.
“I can do it.”
Erynd nodded.
“You can begin.”
The System appeared.
[Replacement Protocol Progress: 1%]
Kael stared.
Then another message appeared.
[Requirement updated.]
[Three stabilizing principles required.]
Kael's expression changed.
“Three.”
The Bone Sovereign nodded.
“One for each defeated lock.”
Kael looked toward the Shadow Lion.
“Shadow.”
The Lion nodded.
The Serpent:
“Nature.”
The Bone Sovereign:
“Death.”
Kael looked toward himself.
“And Change.”
The System displayed:
[Four-principle stabilization framework.]
Shadow.
Nature.
Death.
Change.
Kael understood.
The original prison had used three Beasts to force the system into stability.
The new system would use all four principles.
Not as prisoners.
As balanced forces.
But there was still a problem.
The three Beasts were exhausted.
Kael looked at them.
“You can't maintain this yourselves.”
The Shadow Lion's crimson eyes narrowed.
“No.”
The Serpent:
“We need another source.”
The Bone Sovereign:
“And the prison has one.”
Kael turned toward the black throne.
The empty throne.
The Fifth Path prison.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“The throne.”
Erynd nodded.
“The throne is the stabilizer.”
“But it suppresses Change.”
“Yes.”
“So we need to change the throne without destroying it.”
“Yes.”
Kael smiled.
“That sounds easier than destroying a Legendary prison.”
Erynd laughed softly.
“You're learning sarcasm.”
The One Who Was Waiting
Kael approached the black throne.
He remained outside the white world.
The Origin Blade floated before him.
Metal fragments gathered.
Kael carefully constructed a ring around the throne.
Not touching it.
Only surrounding it.
A stable loop.
The Fifth Path compatibility rose.
3%.
4%.
5%.
The Evolution system responded.
[Stable Change Loop established.]
The white world flickered.
The throne moved.
Just slightly.
Kael smiled.
“It works.”
Then—
the throne spoke.
Not Erynd.
Not the Bone Sovereign.
Not the System.
The throne itself.
“Incorrect.”
Kael froze.
The three Beasts immediately became tense.
The voice continued.
“Change cannot be stabilized.”
Kael stared.
“Why?”
“Because Change is defined by instability.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“Then you're saying the Fifth Path cannot exist.”
Silence.
Then—
“No.”
A black crack appeared across the throne.
“I am saying…”
The crack widened.
“…that you are approaching the wrong question.”
Kael stared.
“What question?”
The throne answered:
“Who decides what is allowed to change?”
Silence.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
The question was bigger than the prison.
Bigger than the Beasts.
It was about authority.
Control.
The network had decided.
The Fifth Path rejected that authority.
Kael had to create something between them.
Not a prison.
Not freedom.
Choice.
Kael's eyes widened.
The Evolution system suddenly updated.
[Fifth Path Principle identified.]
[Principle: Choice.]
Kael stared.
Change required choice.
Evolution required choice.
The difference between growth and chaos—
was direction.
Kael slowly smiled.
“I get it.”
The black throne remained silent.
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
The five-path symbol appeared.
Shadow.
Nature.
Death.
Change.
And at the center—
a fifth concept.
Choice.
The System appeared.
[Fifth Path Evolutionary Principle discovered.]
[Choice.]
[Replacement Protocol Progress: 1% → 8%]
The central prison trembled.
[Containment Integrity: 21% → 24%]
Kael's eyes widened.
“It increased.”
The Bone Sovereign smiled.
“The prison accepted the principle.”
Erynd nodded.
“Now the hard part begins.”
Kael looked toward the black throne.
“What?”
Erynd's expression became grim.
“You have to make the principle permanent.”
Kael tightened his grip.
“How?”
Erynd pointed toward the white world.
“By entering.”
Kael stared at him.
“But the world suppresses evolution.”
“Yes.”
“My Fifth Path compatibility is only five percent.”
“Yes.”
“And if it freezes me…”
“You'll remain trapped inside permanently.”
Kael looked at the timer.
[Legendary Immortality Remaining: 10:42:19]
He looked at the three Legendary Beasts.
Then the Soul Chain.
Then the black throne.
Finally—
he looked at Erynd.
“So I enter.”
Erynd nodded.
“You enter.”
Kael stepped toward the white boundary.
The Evolution system appeared one final time.
[Fifth Path Principle: Choice.]
[Entering Fixed Environment may permanently alter evolutionary trajectory.]
Kael smiled.
“That's the point.”
He stepped forward.
The white world swallowed him.
Everything became still.
His body stopped moving.
His thoughts slowed.
His Evolution system disappeared.
For the first time—
Kael could not feel his own ability to change.
Then—
a voice whispered directly inside his mind.
“Choose.”
Kael's eyes opened.
The white world stretched endlessly before him.
At the center stood the black throne.
And seated upon it—
was a man.
Ancient.
Motionless.
Wearing armor covered in the five-path symbol.
Kael stared.
The man raised his head.
Silver eyes opened.
Not Erynd.
Not Seran.
Not Darian.
Someone older.
Someone who had been waiting inside the prison long before the Darven family existed.
He looked directly at Kael.
Then spoke.
“I am the first one who chose Change.”
The white world trembled.
“And you…”
His silver eyes narrowed.
“…are the first one who may choose it freely.”
