THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 31 — Hunting the Territory Lord

  • Next Chapter

Kael did not return to the Verdant Territory immediately.

That surprised Nightfang.

After seeing the Verdant Horned Basilisk, Kael had expected to charge straight back into its territory.

Instead, he walked in the opposite direction.

"We're leaving?"

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Nightfang glanced back toward the forest.

"The Territory Lord is still there."

"I know."

"Then why retreat?"

Kael stopped.

His expression was calm.

"Because I don't know enough."

Nightfang's golden eyes narrowed.

Kael continued.

"I know its level."

"Forty-one."

"I know its grade."

"Lord."

"I know some of its traits."

"Venom Dominion, Verdant Armor, Regeneration, Territory Control, Predator's Authority."

Kael looked at his damaged AR-02V.

"But I don't know how those abilities interact."

He lifted the weapon.

"I don't know the range of its venom."

"I don't know whether its regeneration has a limit."

"I don't know whether its armor has different strengths."

"And I definitely don't know how its Territory Control works."

Nightfang was silent.

Kael smiled.

"Charging into that territory without knowing those things isn't bravery."

He turned away.

"It's stupidity."

The Hunting Plan

Kael returned to the area where he had fought the Forest Venom Serpent.

He didn't touch the body immediately.

Instead, he examined the battlefield.

Broken trees.

Poison residue.

Metal fragments.

Claw marks.

Burned ground.

Everything was evidence.

Kael crouched beside one of the trees.

The bark had been damaged by venom.

He activated Threat Analysis.

[Residual Venom detected.]

[Analysis: Incomplete.]

Kael used Metal Control.

Tiny metal fragments entered the contaminated bark.

His eyes closed.

Mana flowed through the metal.

Slowly, information returned.

[Venom composition partially analyzed.]

[Primary property: Mana disruption.]

[Secondary property: Cellular regeneration suppression.]

[Warning: Sample insufficient.]

Kael opened his eyes.

"So that's why the serpent died."

Nightfang looked at him.

"The venom suppressed its own regeneration?"

"Partially."

Kael's expression sharpened.

"And if the Territory Lord's regeneration works through the same principle..."

He looked toward the distant forest.

"...then its weakness might not be its body."

"It might be its mana."

The First Experiment

Kael created a small metallic sphere.

Then another.

Then another.

He placed them around the clearing.

Nightfang watched.

"What are those?"

"Mana sensors."

Kael connected them with thin metallic threads.

"I need to know how the territory reacts when the Basilisk uses Territory Control."

He stepped backward.

Then he activated the sensors.

Nothing happened.

For several minutes, the forest remained silent.

Then—

BOOM.

A distant roar shook the trees.

The sensors immediately changed.

[Mana fluctuation detected.]

Kael studied the readings.

Another fluctuation.

Then another.

"They're moving."

Nightfang looked around.

"The monsters?"

Kael nodded.

"But they're not moving randomly."

He watched the readings carefully.

"They're being directed."

The dots on his makeshift map slowly formed a pattern.

Kael's eyes widened.

"The Basilisk isn't controlling every creature individually."

He pointed toward the center.

"It's controlling the territory itself."

Nightfang understood.

"The forest is part of its domain."

"Exactly."

Kael smiled.

"Which means destroying the Basilisk's body isn't enough."

Weapon Evolution

Kael returned to his temporary workshop.

The Venom Core sat on the table.

His Darven Forge activated.

[High-grade Venom Core detected.]

[Compatible with Darven AR-02V.]

[Evolution possible.]

[Required: 3 additional compatible materials.]

Kael looked through his storage.

Iron.

Mithril.

Several magical ores.

Monster cores.

His eyes stopped on a dark crystal.

The remains of the Night Crystal Panther.

Then he looked at a second material.

A fragment from the Ironhide Ravager.

And finally—

the black metal fragment.

The unknown material reacted immediately.

[Unknown material detected.]

[Compatibility: Extremely High.]

[Warning: Evolution result cannot be predicted.]

Kael stared at it.

He remembered the ancient battlefield.

The black-armored Darven.

The metallic beast.

The memories he still couldn't explain.

"Not yet."

He placed the fragment aside.

"I don't understand you."

He selected the other materials.

"Darven Forge."

Mana surged through the room.

The Venom Core cracked.

Green energy poured into the AR-02V.

The weapon began changing.

Its internal structure became denser.

The metal around the barrel condensed.

A faint green glow spread across its surface.

[Evolution successful.]

[Darven AR-02V → Darven AR-03V.]

[Grade: 5 — Rare.]

[Properties:]

[Mana Conduction]

[Bloodline Synchronization]

[Venom Infusion]

[Adaptive Penetration]

[Mana Disruption]

Kael examined it.

"Better."

But he wasn't satisfied.

One weapon wouldn't be enough.

Building a Counter

Over the next several days, Kael didn't hunt for levels.

He hunted for information.

He fought smaller monsters.

Not to kill them immediately—

but to test his weapons.

A Level 25 armored beast attacked.

Kael tested penetration.

A Level 27 venom beast attacked.

He tested poison resistance.

A Level 24 fast predator attacked.

He tested tracking.

A Level 29 regenerating monster attacked.

He tested mana disruption.

Each fight revealed something.

Each fight changed his equipment.

By the end of the week, Kael had created three new techniques.

[Metal Control Technique created.]

[Metal Sense.]

Kael could now detect disturbances through metal fragments spread around an area.

[Metal Control Technique created.]

[Magnetic Pull.]

He could rapidly pull manifested weapons toward himself or redirect metal objects during combat.

And finally—

[Darven Forge Technique created.]

[Rapid Reconfiguration.]

Kael could change the form of a manifested weapon during combat.

A rifle could become a shorter weapon.

A metal chain could become a blade.

A defensive plate could become dozens of projectiles.

The techniques weren't overwhelmingly powerful.

But they made Kael much harder to predict.

Level 24

Three days later—

Kael fought a Level 29 Ironhide Predator.

The battle lasted thirty-six minutes.

Kael deliberately refused to use his strongest weapon.

He studied the creature.

It adapted to his pistol.

He switched to the shotgun.

It adapted to close-range attacks.

He used chains.

It broke them.

He changed the battlefield.

It followed.

Finally, Kael used Rapid Reconfiguration.

The chain suddenly became a spear.

The spear pierced the creature's exposed joint.

[Monster defeated.]

[Level Up.]

[Level 24.]

Kael stood silently.

Then the System displayed his attribute points.

[5 Attribute Points available.]

He allocated:

Strength +1

Agility +1

Vitality +1

Intelligence +2

[Strength: 20]

[Agility: 25]

[Vitality: 25]

[Intelligence: 26]

Kael closed the window.

He could feel the difference.

Not enormous.

But noticeable.

He was becoming faster.

More durable.

More precise.

And his mana control was improving.

The First Attempt

Three days later, Kael returned to the Verdant Territory.

Nightfang immediately noticed the change.

"You've prepared."

Kael nodded.

"Enough for a test."

"A fight?"

"No."

Kael looked toward the enormous forest.

"An experiment."

They entered.

The monsters noticed them immediately.

But Kael didn't attack.

He released dozens of tiny metal fragments into the trees.

Metal Sense.

His perception expanded.

Every vibration.

Every movement.

Every change in mana.

The entire forest slowly became part of his awareness.

Then—

Kael felt something.

A massive presence.

Thirty meters away.

He smiled.

"Found you."

The Verdant Horned Basilisk opened its eyes.

Kael didn't attack it.

Instead, he fired the AR-03V at a tree beside it.

The shot struck.

The Basilisk's eyes narrowed.

Kael fired again.

Not at the creature.

At another tree.

Then another.

He was mapping its reaction.

The Basilisk roared.

The forest responded.

Thousands of roots erupted from the ground.

Kael immediately moved.

His Metal Sense detected them before they emerged.

He dodged.

Then—

the Basilisk disappeared.

Kael's eyes widened.

"Where—"

A massive horn struck him from the side.

BOOM!

Kael flew across the clearing.

He hit the ground and rolled.

Pain spread through his ribs.

The Basilisk appeared behind him.

Kael immediately activated Magnetic Pull.

His katana flew into his hand.

He blocked.

CLANG!

The impact forced him backward.

The Basilisk attacked again.

Kael dodged.

Another attack.

He dodged.

Then the creature opened its mouth.

Green flames erupted.

Kael jumped behind a metal barrier.

The barrier began melting.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Venom isn't its only attack."

The barrier collapsed.

Kael retreated.

He didn't fire.

He didn't counter.

He simply watched.

The Basilisk advanced.

Kael noticed something.

Every time it used the green flames—

the plants around it withered.

And every time the plants withered—

the Basilisk's regeneration weakened slightly.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"There's the connection."

He immediately activated Metal Control.

The ground beneath the Basilisk erupted.

Not with weapons.

With metal barriers.

They formed a ring around the creature.

Kael fired the GL-02 at the outer vegetation.

One section of the forest collapsed.

Then another.

The Basilisk roared.

Its regeneration slowed.

Kael smiled.

"I was right."

Then the Basilisk's eyes turned crimson.

[Warning.]

[Territory Lord has activated Predator's Authority.]

The entire forest moved.

Kael's sensors overloaded.

His Metal Sense shattered.

Hundreds of monsters appeared.

Kael looked around.

"This is bad."

Nightfang growled.

"Now you understand."

Kael immediately recalled every weapon.

"We're leaving."

He activated every prepared escape route.

Metal anchors pulled him through the trees.

Nightfang followed.

The Basilisk did not pursue.

It simply watched.

Kael escaped the territory with blood running from his forehead.

He looked back.

The Basilisk remained in the distance.

Untouched.

But Kael was smiling.

Because now—

he knew.

The Territory Lord had a weakness.

And next time—

he would come prepared to exploit it.

[New Information Recorded.]

[Verdant Horned Basilisk weakness hypothesis established.]

[Territory dependency: Confirmed.]

[Regeneration source: Partially identified.]

[Recommended strategy: Sever territory connection.]

Kael wiped the blood from his forehead.

"Level 24."

He looked toward the enormous forest.

"Eleven more."

His smile disappeared.

"And next time, I'm staying longer."
