Chapter 33 — The Hunt of the Territory Lord

  • Next Chapter

Kael had learned something important.

The Verdant Horned Basilisk was not simply stronger than him.

It was smarter.

It had recognized his Metal Domain.

It had learned that Kael could interfere with its territory.

And now both sides knew the other was hunting.

Kael stood at the edge of the eastern forest, staring at the enormous trees.

Level 25.

The Basilisk was Level 41.

Sixteen levels separated them.

Kael had no intention of pretending that difference didn't matter.

He tightened his grip around his katana.

"I won't fight it again yet."

Nightfang looked at him.

"Good."

Kael smiled.

"I'll hunt everything it commands first."

The Territory's Army

Kael spent the next several days attacking the edges of the Basilisk's territory.

He didn't enter deeply.

He struck where the territory was weakest.

A group of Level 26 Venom Hounds.

Defeated.

Three Level 28 Thornback Beasts.

Defeated.

A Level 30 Ironhide Serpent.

Barely defeated.

Then—

something changed.

Kael noticed the monsters were becoming more organized.

They stopped wandering into his traps.

They began avoiding metal-rich areas.

They started attacking his sensors.

The Basilisk was learning.

Kael crouched beside a destroyed Metal Sense marker.

"Interesting."

Nightfang looked at the broken fragment.

"It knows what these are."

Kael nodded.

"Which means it remembers my previous battles."

He looked toward the forest.

"It's adapting faster than I expected."

Nightfang growled.

"Then change your strategy."

Kael smiled.

"Already did."

He reached into his storage.

Instead of metal sensors—

he pulled out pieces of wood.

Nightfang stared at him.

"Wood?"

"My Metal Sense isn't useful if everything knows where my metal is."

Kael placed the wooden markers around the territory.

"They can't detect what I don't control."

He then buried tiny metallic fragments beneath the wooden markers.

The monsters saw the wood.

They ignored it.

Kael smiled.

"Now I have both."

The First Trap

Two days later, a Level 33 Thornback Commander entered the area.

Kael didn't attack.

He watched.

The beast moved toward one of the wooden markers.

Kael waited.

Closer.

Closer.

Then—

Metal Control.

The buried fragments activated.

Metal chains erupted from beneath the ground.

The Thornback Beast roared.

Kael fired the AR-03V.

The first shot struck its armored shoulder.

The second hit the same location.

The third cracked the armor.

The beast broke the chains.

Kael had expected that.

He switched to GL-02.

Instead of firing at the beast—

he fired behind it.

The explosion pushed the creature forward.

Straight into the second trap.

Metal spikes rose.

The beast stumbled.

Kael appeared above it.

His katana descended.

The fight ended.

[Level 33 Thornback Commander defeated.]

[Experience acquired.]

The System flashed.

[Level Up.]

[Level 26.]

Kael landed.

He immediately opened his status.

[Level: 26]

[Rank: D-Rank Adept — Early]

Kael paused.

D-Rank.

The advancement felt different.

His mana circulation became smoother.

His body felt heavier with strength.

His senses sharpened.

He received five points.

Kael allocated:

Strength +1

Agility +1

Vitality +2

Intelligence +1

[Strength: 22]

[Agility: 28]

[Vitality: 28]

[Intelligence: 28]

Kael closed the window.

Then—

the forest went silent.

Again.

Kael's smile disappeared.

The Basilisk was nearby.

The Second Encounter

The Verdant Horned Basilisk emerged from the trees.

Level 41.

Lord.

Potential Overlord.

It stared at the dead Thornback Commander.

Then at Kael.

Kael didn't move.

Neither did the Basilisk.

The System attempted analysis.

[Target: Verdant Horned Basilisk]

[Level: 41]

[Grade: Lord]

[Potential: Overlord]

[Traits: Venom Dominion, Verdant Armor, Regeneration, Territory Control, Predator's Authority]

[Current condition: 98%]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

98%.

It had barely been damaged during their previous encounter.

He knew immediately.

A direct fight would still be suicidal.

The Basilisk opened its mouth.

Green energy gathered.

Kael raised his hand.

"Wait."

The Basilisk stopped.

Kael slowly lowered his weapons.

"I'm not challenging you."

The creature watched him.

Kael pointed toward the dead Thornback.

"I'm learning."

The Basilisk's eyes narrowed.

Kael continued.

"Every time I fight your territory, I learn something about you."

A low growl answered him.

Then the Basilisk attacked.

Kael moved instantly.

The ground where he had been standing exploded.

Kael fired the AR-03V while retreating.

The shots struck the Basilisk's armor.

No damage.

Kael wasn't surprised.

He had expected that.

"Phase one."

He activated Metal Domain.

Metal fragments spread across the battlefield.

The Basilisk roared.

Roots erupted.

Kael dodged.

But instead of attacking the Basilisk—

he attacked the roots.

The AR-03V fired.

Crack.

The roots broke.

The Basilisk's regeneration slowed.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"Confirmed."

He immediately changed position.

The Basilisk followed.

Kael fired the GL-02 into the ground.

The explosion separated them.

He used Metal Control to pull himself backward.

The Basilisk charged.

Kael waited.

Five meters.

Four.

Three.

Two—

"Now."

The ground beneath the Basilisk collapsed.

It fell into a massive underground cavity.

Kael had spent three days creating it.

Metal supports held the surrounding soil.

The Basilisk landed inside.

Kael immediately sealed the opening.

For the first time—

the Territory Lord was trapped.

Kael raised the SR-01.

He aimed.

Then stopped.

Something was wrong.

The Basilisk wasn't struggling.

It was looking at him.

Almost calmly.

Kael's instincts screamed.

"Move!"

The ground beneath him exploded.

Roots burst upward.

Kael was thrown into the air.

The Basilisk had never been trapped.

It had used the roots beneath the trap to move itself through the ground.

Kael barely formed a metal shield.

BOOM!

The Basilisk smashed him through it.

Kael hit the ground hard.

Pain spread across his chest.

He rolled away.

The Basilisk emerged behind him.

Kael fired the SR-01.

The bullet struck its eye.

The Basilisk roared.

For a moment—

Kael thought he had succeeded.

Then the eye regenerated.

Kael stared.

"No..."

The Basilisk charged.

Kael activated Metal Domain.

The creature broke through it.

Kael fired the GL-02.

The explosion barely slowed it.

His katana met its horn.

CLANG!

Kael's arms went numb.

The Basilisk struck again.

Kael barely dodged.

The next attack grazed his side.

Pain erupted.

Kael stumbled.

The Basilisk raised its head.

Green energy gathered.

Kael knew.

He couldn't block that.

He couldn't outrun it.

He couldn't overpower it.

So—

he did the only thing left.

He stopped fighting.

Kael threw his katana away.

The Basilisk paused.

Kael raised both hands.

"Metal Control."

The weapon didn't return.

Instead—

every piece of metal he had placed throughout the forest moved.

Hundreds.

Then thousands.

All converging toward one point.

Not the Basilisk.

The ground beneath it.

Metal spikes pierced the roots.

The territory's mana network was disrupted.

The Basilisk's green energy flickered.

Its regeneration stopped for one second.

One second was enough.

Kael grabbed the katana.

He charged.

Not toward the head.

Not toward the heart.

Toward the exposed joint beneath its front leg.

His blade struck.

CRACK.

The Basilisk stumbled.

Kael immediately retreated.

He didn't attempt another attack.

The Basilisk roared.

Its entire territory shook.

Kael's Metal Domain shattered.

He ran.

The Basilisk didn't chase.

It stood in the forest, staring at the wound.

A tiny wound.

Barely visible.

But real.

For the first time—

Kael had damaged it.

A New Problem

Kael returned to camp barely able to stand.

Nightfang immediately approached.

"You fought it."

Kael nodded.

"And?"

Kael looked at the wound on his side.

"I hurt it."

Nightfang's expression changed.

"But?"

Kael looked toward the forest.

"It learned something too."

"What?"

Kael smiled faintly.

"It knows I won't attack the obvious weakness."

Nightfang understood.

Kael wasn't just learning the Basilisk.

The Basilisk was learning him.

That made the next battle much more dangerous.

A System window appeared.

[Combat analysis complete.]

[Enemy adaptation confirmed.]

[Territory Lord intelligence: High.]

[Recommended strategy: Continuous tactical variation.]

Then another message appeared.

[Level Up.]

Kael froze.

The experience from the battle had finally accumulated enough.

[Level 27.]

Five points appeared.

Kael allocated:

Strength +1

Agility +2

Vitality +1

Intelligence +1

[Strength: 23]

[Agility: 30]

[Vitality: 29]

[Intelligence: 29]

Kael closed his status.

Seven levels remained before Level 35.

But he wasn't rushing anymore.

Because he had finally realized something.

The Level 41 Territory Lord wasn't merely an obstacle between him and the Legendary Beasts.

It was becoming his greatest teacher.

Every time Kael survived—

he learned.

Every time the Basilisk adapted—

Kael had to evolve.

And eventually—

one of them would run out of ways to adapt.

Far inside the Verdant Territory, the Basilisk looked at the tiny wound on its leg.

Green energy flowed through it.

The wound closed.

But the creature did not forget.

It had fought countless predators.

Countless monsters.

Countless challengers.

None had studied it like Kael.

None had changed tactics so quickly.

The Basilisk lifted its head.

A deep roar echoed through the territory.

The weaker beasts immediately scattered.

The Territory Lord had made a decision.

The next time Kael entered its territory—

it would hunt him first.

And beneath the forest floor, the Verdant Serpent opened its eyes.

It had been watching the entire battle.

For the first time—

there was something resembling interest in its ancient gaze.
