THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 35 — The Territory Trial

  • Next Chapter

Kael stared at the map spread across the stone floor.

Eighteen mana nodes.

Three major branches.

One enormous pattern beneath the forest.

A serpent.

The entire Verdant Territory was part of the ancient seal.

Kael tapped one of the marked locations.

"This is where the Basilisk draws most of its power."

Nightfang nodded.

"But destroying it won't be enough."

"I know."

Kael pointed toward another cluster.

"These aren't independent."

His finger moved across the map.

"They form a chain."

Nightfang's golden eyes narrowed.

"If you disrupt one..."

"The others compensate."

Kael smiled.

"Exactly."

He had discovered the problem.

The Basilisk's territory wasn't a collection of mana nodes.

It was a living network.

Destroying individual nodes would accomplish almost nothing.

To weaken the Territory Lord, Kael needed to disrupt several nodes at once.

But there was another problem.

The Basilisk knew he was studying them.

Kael looked at the map.

"So I need it to stop watching me."

Nightfang's ears moved.

"You have an idea."

"I do."

The Bait

Kael spent the next three days preparing.

He deliberately placed several obvious Metal Sense markers around the territory.

They were poorly hidden.

Almost suspiciously obvious.

Nightfang watched him.

"You're giving away your position."

"That's the point."

Kael placed another marker.

"The Basilisk expects me to attack its nodes."

He smiled.

"So I'm going to make it think I already started."

Kael created three false networks.

Each one contained enough metal to resemble a genuine mana-control formation.

Then he waited.

For two days—

nothing happened.

On the third night—

the forest changed.

The obvious markers disappeared.

Kael smiled.

"It took the bait."

Nightfang looked toward the trees.

"How?"

Kael pointed toward the ground.

"Roots."

The Basilisk had sent roots underground.

It had destroyed every obvious marker.

But Kael had expected that.

"Now I know exactly which paths it uses to inspect the territory."

He closed his fist.

"Let's go."

The Hidden Network

Kael and Nightfang moved through the forest at night.

No torches.

No unnecessary movement.

Kael used Metal Sense sparingly.

He had learned not to rely on a single ability.

Every hundred meters, he stopped.

Listened.

Watched.

Studied the vegetation.

Then moved again.

After several hours, they reached a deep ravine.

Kael crouched.

There was no visible mana node.

But something felt wrong.

He placed his hand against the stone.

Metal Control spread through the ground.

His eyes widened.

"Found it."

A massive metal structure existed beneath the rock.

Not natural metal.

Ancient metal.

Kael couldn't move it.

Not even slightly.

The System appeared.

[Ancient Sealing Structure detected.]

[Material: Unknown.]

[Function: Territorial Stabilization.]

[Origin: Unknown.]

Kael stared at it.

"So the nodes aren't just part of the forest."

He touched the structure.

"They're connected to the original seal."

Nightfang looked uncomfortable.

"Then don't interfere."

Kael frowned.

"Why?"

"Because you don't know what happens if you damage it."

Kael slowly removed his hand.

He hated admitting it.

But Nightfang was right.

He wasn't strong enough to experiment with something that had survived thousands of years.

Instead, Kael examined it.

There were markings.

Three symbols.

A lion.

A serpent.

A skeleton.

Kael's expression changed.

"The three beasts."

Nightfang became silent.

Kael looked closer.

The symbols weren't connected.

They were separated by three lines.

Then he noticed something else.

A fourth symbol.

Almost completely destroyed.

A human hand.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"The Darven."

The Territory Trial

A System window suddenly appeared.

[Hidden Trial discovered.]

[Trial Name: Territory Trial — Verdant.]

[Requirement: Level 25+]

[Objective: Survive inside the Verdant Territory for seven days while under continuous pursuit.]

[Secondary Objective: Discover the source of territorial authority.]

[Failure: Forced expulsion.]

[Reward: Unknown.]

Kael stared at the screen.

"Seven days?"

Nightfang growled.

"The Basilisk will hunt you."

"I know."

"It knows your methods now."

"I know."

"It has an entire territory."

Kael smiled.

"That's why I'm doing it."

He accepted the trial.

The System responded immediately.

[Territory Trial activated.]

[Time remaining: 7 Days.]

[Territory Lord has detected the trial.]

The forest became silent.

Kael slowly stood.

Then—

a roar shook the entire eastern forest.

The Basilisk knew.

Day One

The first attack came six minutes later.

Not from the Basilisk.

From its army.

Eight monsters emerged from the trees.

Kael activated Threat Analysis.

[Venomfang Hound — Level 29 — Elite]

[Venomfang Hound — Level 30 — Elite]

[Ironhide Serpent — Level 31 — Commander]

[Ironhide Serpent — Level 32 — Commander]

[Thornback Beast — Level 30 — Elite]

[Thornback Beast — Level 31 — Elite]

[Verdant Claw — Level 33 — Commander]

[Verdant Claw — Level 34 — Commander]

Kael didn't attack.

He observed.

The creatures surrounded him.

Six in front.

Two behind.

"Formation."

Kael smiled.

"They're herding me."

Nightfang growled.

"Which direction?"

Kael looked at the gaps.

"North."

He fired the SR-01 into the ground.

The sound echoed through the forest.

The monsters shifted.

Kael watched.

There.

A small reaction from the Verdant Claw.

"That's the leader."

Kael fired again.

The beast dodged.

Kael smiled.

"Got you."

He didn't chase.

Instead, he turned toward the opposite direction.

The monsters moved to block him.

Exactly as expected.

Kael suddenly fired the GL-02 behind himself.

The explosion launched him forward.

He passed between two monsters.

Metal chains appeared.

They tangled the creatures together.

Kael landed.

He immediately switched to AR-03V.

Three controlled bursts.

One monster fell.

Another charged.

Kael used Magnetic Pull on a hidden metal fragment.

His body shifted sideways.

The attack missed.

He struck the monster's leg with his katana.

Then retreated.

No unnecessary hits.

No prolonged exchange.

His objective wasn't to kill them.

It was to survive.

The monsters pursued.

Kael kept moving.

For hours.

Day Three

Kael was exhausted.

He hadn't slept properly.

He had eaten while moving.

His mana recovery was becoming a problem.

The Basilisk's territory constantly interfered with his natural regeneration.

Kael checked his status.

[Level: 27]

[Mana: 41/41]

[Strength: 23]

[Agility: 30]

[Vitality: 29]

[Intelligence: 29]

He frowned.

"Still Level 27."

Nightfang looked at him.

"You don't need to level."

"I know."

Kael looked toward the trees.

"But I need to become stronger."

There was a difference.

Level wasn't the only form of growth.

Kael opened his weapon status.

Darven AR-03V

Grade: 5 — Rare

Quality: Fine

Properties: Mana Conduction, Bloodline Synchronization, Venom Infusion, Adaptive Penetration, Mana Disruption

Kael stared at it.

"Mana Disruption..."

He had barely used it.

He had created the property specifically for the Basilisk.

But he hadn't yet understood its limits.

He removed the magazine and examined the weapon.

"If the Basilisk's regeneration depends on the territory..."

He looked toward the distant forest.

"Then I don't need to destroy the territory."

Nightfang's eyes narrowed.

"What do you mean?"

"I only need to interrupt the connection long enough."

Kael smiled.

"One second."

Day Five

Kael finally found another major node.

This time—

he didn't touch it.

Instead, he placed three metal anchors around it.

One underground.

One inside a tree.

One beneath a rock.

Then he connected them through Metal Control.

A small network formed.

Kael activated Mana Disruption.

The node flickered.

For exactly one second—

the surrounding vegetation stopped glowing.

Kael's eyes widened.

"One second."

Nightfang stared.

"You found it."

"Not yet."

Kael looked toward the distant mountains.

"I need to make it longer."

A roar echoed through the forest.

The Basilisk had arrived.

Kael immediately dismantled the anchors.

He ran.

Behind him—

the Territory Lord entered the clearing.

It looked at the damaged node.

Then at Kael's footprints.

The Basilisk understood.

Kael wasn't trying to destroy its territory anymore.

He was learning how to turn it off.

The Basilisk roared.

The entire forest responded.

Day Seven

Kael stood at the center of the forest.

Exhausted.

Dirty.

His clothing was damaged.

His weapons had suffered heavy wear.

But his eyes were sharper than before.

The System appeared.

[Seven-day Territory Trial completed.]

[Primary Objective: Complete.]

[Secondary Objective: Complete.]

Kael waited.

[Trial reward calculating...]

The forest trembled.

The Verdant Horned Basilisk appeared.

Kael immediately drew his katana.

The System displayed one final message.

[Warning.]

[Territory Lord challenge detected.]

[Trial reward will be granted only after surviving the final encounter.]

Kael stared at the Basilisk.

The creature lowered its head.

No army.

No subordinate monsters.

Just the two of them.

Kael smiled.

"So that's the real test."

The Basilisk charged.

Kael didn't run.

He activated every hidden anchor he'd placed during the previous seven days.

Metal Domain.

The territory flickered.

The Basilisk's regeneration weakened.

Kael fired the AR-03V.

The first attack struck its armor.

The second struck the same point.

The third penetrated.

The Basilisk roared.

Kael switched to the SR-01.

One shot.

The creature dodged.

Kael had expected that.

He activated Magnetic Pull.

His body shifted.

The Basilisk's horn passed beside him.

Kael turned.

Katana.

One strike.

The wound opened.

The Basilisk immediately retaliated.

Kael blocked.

The impact threw him backward.

He rolled.

His shoulder struck the ground.

He forced himself up.

The Basilisk charged again.

Kael looked at the mana network.

Then at the Basilisk.

Then at his AR-03V.

He understood.

"Not the beast."

He aimed at the ground.

"The connection."

He fired.

Mana Disruption activated.

The entire territory flickered.

For three seconds—

the Basilisk's regeneration stopped.

Kael stared.

Three seconds.

That was all he needed.

But he didn't attack.

He retreated.

The Basilisk stared at him.

Kael lowered his weapon.

"I don't need to kill you today."

The System appeared.

[Final encounter survived.]

[Territory Trial completed.]

[Verdant Territory understanding increased.]

[Beast Path Compatibility: 2% → 4%.]

[Bloodline Progress: 11% → 12%.]

[New technique available.]

[Territory Severance — Beginner.]

Kael's eyes widened.

He had gained something more valuable than a level.

A technique specifically designed to fight territorial powers.

The Basilisk turned away.

It did not pursue.

But before disappearing into the trees—

it looked back at Kael.

The message was clear.

Next time, it would be prepared for Territory Severance.

Kael smiled.

"Then I'll prepare for that."

He looked toward the distant mountains.

Level 27.

Three years of growth still ahead.

Twenty-three levels remained before the Legendary Seal would allow him to approach the beasts.

And now Kael understood something.

The road to Level 50 wasn't going to be about simply becoming stronger.

It was going to be about becoming strong enough to survive things that were never meant to be fought by someone like him.
