THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 36 — The Beast That Hunts Hunters
Three days had passed since Kael completed the Verdant Territory Trial.
He had not gained another level.
He didn't care.
For the first time, Kael understood that experience points were not the only measure of progress.
He had gained something far more important.
Understanding.
He sat inside a small cave, surrounded by pieces of metal.
His weapons were laid out in front of him.
The Darven AR-03V.
The Darven SR-01.
The Darven GL-02.
The Darven MP-01.
And his katana.
Kael examined each one carefully.
"The Basilisk has already adapted to my current arsenal."
He picked up the AR-03V.
"Then I need something it hasn't seen."
His eyes moved toward the pile of rare metals.
Mithril.
Adamantite.
Several unidentified magical ores.
Kael selected a dark green metal.
The material reacted immediately to his mana.
[Unknown magical metal detected.]
Kael frowned.
The System didn't identify it.
That was unusual.
He touched it.
A strange sensation passed through his hand.
Not power.
A memory.
A forest.
A massive serpent.
Then—
nothing.
Kael immediately pulled his hand away.
"Again."
He touched the metal.
Nothing happened.
Kael frowned.
"Interesting."
He put it aside.
He wasn't going to use an unknown material without understanding it.
That was another lesson the Basilisk had taught him.
Never trust power you don't understand.
The New Weapon
Kael chose mithril instead.
He began working.
Metal Control spread through the material.
Mana entered it.
His bloodline responded.
The metal slowly changed shape.
Kael wasn't simply creating a stronger version of the AR-03V.
He was changing its purpose.
The AR-03V had been designed to disrupt mana.
The new weapon would focus on something different.
Precision.
After several hours, the weapon was complete.
[Darven PR-01 created.]
Type: Precision Rifle
Grade: 5 — Rare
Quality: Fine
Properties: Mana Conduction, Bloodline Synchronization, High Precision, Mana Disruption
Special Function:Weakness Lock
Kael stared at the final property.
"Weakness Lock?"
The System explained.
[Weakness Lock allows the user to mark a previously identified weakness.]
[Effectiveness depends on Intelligence, weapon mastery, and target analysis.]
[It does not ignore defenses.]
[It cannot create weaknesses that do not exist.]
Kael smiled.
"Exactly what I needed."
He wasn't trying to create an overpowered weapon.
He was creating a weapon that rewarded preparation.
The Territory Lord's Response
Outside the cave—
something watched.
The Verdant Horned Basilisk remained deep within its territory.
It had learned Kael's patterns.
His traps.
His Metal Domain.
His Territory Severance.
His weapons.
But there was one thing it hadn't learned.
Kael was no longer fighting it.
He was preparing for the next fight.
The Basilisk lifted its head.
A smaller beast approached.
A Verdant Claw.
"Where is the human?"
The beast lowered its head.
"Near the western boundary."
The Basilisk's eyes narrowed.
"Take the others."
The subordinate hesitated.
"The human hasn't entered the territory."
"Then make him."
The Ambush
Kael was walking through a narrow valley.
He stopped.
Something was wrong.
No birds.
No insects.
No wind.
Kael slowly raised his hand.
Metal Sense.
Nothing.
He frowned.
"Too quiet."
Nightfang stopped beside him.
A low growl escaped his throat.
Then—
BOOM!
The valley walls erupted.
Monsters poured from hidden tunnels.
Kael immediately recognized the tactic.
"Herding."
The same strategy again.
But this time—
Kael smiled.
"You're getting predictable."
He didn't retreat.
Instead, he ran forward.
The monsters expected him to escape backward.
Kael accelerated.
The first beast attacked.
Kael ducked.
The second swung.
He jumped.
The third opened its mouth.
Kael fired the GL-02 directly into the ground.
The explosion launched him over the creature.
He landed behind the formation.
The monsters turned.
Too late.
Kael activated Metal Control.
Dozens of small metal fragments flew from the valley walls.
Not weapons.
Markers.
They connected.
A temporary Metal Domain formed.
The monsters' movement slowed.
Kael raised the PR-01.
He activated Threat Analysis.
[Target identified.]
[Weakness detected.]
[Left rear joint.]
[Weakness Lock available.]
Kael pulled the trigger.
The shot struck exactly where he intended.
The monster collapsed.
Kael immediately moved.
Another target.
[Weakness detected.]
[Mana gland instability.]
Another shot.
Another fall.
Kael didn't remain in one position.
Every time he fired—
he moved.
Every time an enemy adapted—
he changed weapons.
MP-01 for close pressure.
AR-03V for sustained attacks.
GL-02 for movement disruption.
PR-01 for precision.
Katana for anything that reached him.
He wasn't fighting eight monsters anymore.
He was controlling the battlefield.
Then the Real Enemy Arrived
The ground trembled.
Kael stopped.
The monsters surrounding him suddenly backed away.
Nightfang's golden eyes widened.
"That's not a subordinate."
Kael activated Threat Analysis.
The System flickered.
[Target detected.]
[Name: Verdant Fang Ravager]
[Level: 38]
[Grade: Commander]
[Potential: Lord]
[Classification: Territory Guardian]
[Traits: Venom Dominion, Burrowing, Adaptive Scales, Mana Tracking, Guardian Authority]
Kael's expression became serious.
Level 38.
Only three levels below the Basilisk's territory lord.
The creature emerged from the ground.
Its body was covered in green-black armor.
Two enormous horns curved backward from its head.
Kael immediately understood.
"This isn't another monster."
Nightfang growled.
"It's one of the Basilisk's guardians."
The Ravager stared at Kael.
Then—
it spoke.
"You have disturbed the territory."
Kael's eyes narrowed.
Another intelligent monster.
"You can speak."
"We can all learn."
The Ravager lowered its head.
"But you learn too quickly."
Kael raised the PR-01.
"Then let's see who learns faster."
The Battle of Adaptation
Kael fired.
The Ravager moved.
The shot missed.
Kael expected it.
He fired again.
The creature changed direction.
Kael smiled.
"Your movement pattern changed."
The Ravager charged.
Kael switched to MP-01.
He fired while retreating.
The Ravager's scales hardened.
The bullets became almost useless.
Kael immediately stopped firing.
The creature accelerated.
Kael threw the MP-01 aside.
Metal Control.
The weapon transformed into a chain.
The chain wrapped around the Ravager's front leg.
The creature tore through it.
Kael expected that too.
The broken chain fragments became dozens of metal spikes.
The Ravager's armor blocked most of them.
One penetrated.
The creature roared.
Kael raised the PR-01.
[Weakness detected.]
[Previous weakness invalidated.]
[New weakness: lower neck.]
Kael fired.
The Ravager moved its head.
The shot missed.
Kael's eyes widened.
It had read the targeting behavior.
The creature wasn't merely reacting to his attacks.
It was learning his analysis.
Kael smiled.
"Now this is interesting."
The Ravager attacked.
Kael barely dodged.
Its horn tore through the stone behind him.
Kael rolled.
He fired the GL-02.
The explosion forced the Ravager backward.
Kael didn't attack.
He watched.
The creature's left leg moved slightly slower.
There.
A hidden injury.
Kael had seen it when the chain caught it.
He raised the PR-01.
But instead of aiming at the leg—
he aimed at the ground.
The shot struck a metal marker.
The marker activated.
A magnetic pulse pulled the Ravager's injured leg sideways.
Its balance broke.
Kael charged.
Katana.
One strike.
Then another.
The Ravager blocked.
Kael didn't force it.
He retreated.
The creature roared.
It understood.
Kael wasn't trying to overpower it.
He was stacking small advantages.
Again.
And again.
And again.
The Territory Guardian Falls
The fight lasted nearly forty minutes.
Kael's mana dropped dangerously low.
His shoulder was bruised.
His left leg was bleeding from a shallow wound.
His weapons were overheating from repeated use.
The Ravager was wounded.
But still standing.
Kael took a breath.
He had one final plan.
He scattered every remaining metal marker around the valley.
The Ravager watched.
"You have no strength left."
Kael smiled.
"Correct."
He dropped the PR-01.
Then the AR-03V.
Then the MP-01.
The Ravager charged.
Kael raised both hands.
Metal Control.
Every weapon he had discarded transformed simultaneously.
The weapons broke apart into hundreds of metal fragments.
The fragments formed a massive cage around the Ravager.
The creature attacked.
The cage shook.
Kael gritted his teeth.
His mana was almost empty.
The Ravager broke one side.
Kael repaired it.
Another.
He repaired that too.
The creature roared.
Kael's vision blurred.
"One more."
The cage compressed.
The Ravager's armor cracked.
Kael grabbed the katana.
He ran forward.
The Ravager broke through the cage.
Kael stepped inside its attack.
The creature's horn passed beside his head.
Kael struck the damaged joint beneath its neck.
The katana pierced through the weakened armor.
The Ravager froze.
Then collapsed.
Silence returned to the valley.
Kael stood motionless.
The System appeared.
[Verdant Fang Ravager defeated.]
[Territory Guardian defeated.]
[Experience acquired.]
[Level Up.]
[Level 28.]
Kael dropped to one knee.
Five attribute points appeared.
He allocated:
+1 Strength
+2 Agility
+1 Vitality
+1 Intelligence
[Strength: 24]
[Agility: 32]
[Vitality: 30]
[Intelligence: 30]
Kael breathed slowly.
Then another message appeared.
[Territory Guardian defeated.]
[Verdant Territory Trial progress: 1/3 Guardians defeated.]
Kael looked toward the eastern forest.
"Three?"
Nightfang nodded.
"The Basilisk has three guardians."
Kael stood.
"Then I'll hunt the other two."
Nightfang stared at him.
"You just fought a Level 38 guardian."
Kael picked up his damaged PR-01.
"And it almost killed me."
He looked at the forest.
"That's why I need to become stronger."
Far away, deep inside the Verdant Territory—
the Verdant Horned Basilisk opened its eyes.
One of its three guardians had fallen.
For the first time, the Territory Lord understood something important.
Kael wasn't trying to reach Level 50 as quickly as possible.
He was building himself into someone who could survive the things waiting beyond it.
And the Basilisk had no intention of making that journey easy.
