THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 45 — The Ironhide Tyrant

  • Next Chapter

The valley was silent.

Kael lay motionless on a rocky ledge, his rifle resting against his shoulder as he watched the creature below.

The Ironhide Tyrant.

It stood nearly six meters tall at the shoulder, its body covered in overlapping gray-black scales that looked more like forged plates than natural armor. Two massive horns projected from its skull, and thick muscles moved beneath its hide every time it breathed.

The creature was not merely large.

It was dense.

Heavy.

Built to turn its own body into a weapon.

The System displayed the information again.

[Target Identified.]

Name: Ironhide Tyrant

Level: 38

Grade: Lord

Potential: Overlord

Classification: Territory Lord

Traits:

  • Ironhide Armor
  • Kinetic Resistance
  • Charge
  • Mana Reinforcement
  • Territory Authority

Kael watched it for another hour.

He didn't fire.

He didn't move closer.

He simply observed.

The Tyrant wandered through its territory, occasionally lowering its head and scraping one hoof against the stone.

Each time it did, fragments of rock were crushed beneath its weight.

Kael narrowed his eyes.

Its body is already dangerous before it attacks.

That meant fighting it normally would be foolish.

He had learned that against the Blackthorn Colossus.

A Territory Lord wasn't simply a powerful monster.

It was a monster designed around its environment.

Kael slowly looked across the valley.

Broken cliffs.

Narrow passages.

Long stretches of open ground.

A dry riverbed.

Several massive boulders.

And beneath all of it—

metal.

Enough for him to work with.

Kael touched the PR-02.

“Let's see how much of the plan survives contact with you.”

He stood.

The First Exchange

Kael walked into the valley.

The Ironhide Tyrant immediately noticed him.

Its head rose.

Its eyes locked onto Kael.

Neither moved.

Then the Tyrant lowered its head.

Kael's expression sharpened.

The ground cracked.

The beast disappeared forward.

BOOM!

Kael stepped sideways.

The Tyrant passed so close that the wind of its movement struck his clothes.

It smashed through a stone pillar behind him.

The pillar exploded.

Kael rolled once and came up with PR-02 already raised.

BANG!

The shot struck the creature's flank.

A spark flashed.

The round barely penetrated the outer scales.

Kael didn't shoot again.

The Tyrant skidded to a halt.

It looked over its shoulder.

Kael noticed something.

The impact hadn't simply bounced.

The scales had moved.

A thin layer of mana had spread across the armor at the instant of impact.

Mana Reinforcement.

“So that's how you do it.”

The Tyrant charged again.

This time Kael didn't move until the last moment.

He stepped back.

The horn passed inches from his body.

Kael raised the rifle as the monster passed.

BANG!

Same result.

Minimal penetration.

But Kael wasn't trying to damage it.

He was measuring.

He watched the ground beneath the Tyrant.

The first charge had created a faint trail of disturbed earth.

The second was deeper.

The creature was transferring force through its legs and spine.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

Acceleration first.

Then reinforcement.

Then impact.

That meant the longer the Tyrant could accelerate—

the stronger the attack would become.

Kael smiled.

“That makes this easier.”

The Tyrant roared.

Kael turned and ran.

Kael led the creature toward the western side of the valley.

The Tyrant followed immediately.

Its hooves struck the ground like hammers.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

Kael reached the narrow passage he had selected beforehand.

The cliffs were only slightly wider than the Tyrant's body.

Perfect.

He crossed through.

The Tyrant lowered its horns.

It accelerated.

Kael glanced backward.

Twenty meters.

Fifteen.

Ten.

“Now.”

His fingers moved.

Metal Control.

The earth erupted.

Six metal anchors burst from the ground.

Two on each side of the corridor.

Two behind the Tyrant.

Thick cables snapped into place.

The Tyrant hit them at full speed.

KRAAANG!

The cables pulled tight.

The anchors bent.

Kael was forced backward by the shockwave.

The Tyrant's hooves tore trenches into the ground.

For half a second—

it stopped.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Held.

Then one anchor ripped free.

The Tyrant continued moving.

A second cable snapped.

Then a third.

Kael's expression changed.

Too much force.

The Tyrant wasn't just strong enough to break the restraints.

It was using them as leverage.

Kael immediately changed the configuration.

The six anchors twisted.

Instead of pulling backward—

he redirected the cables sideways.

The Tyrant's momentum suddenly shifted.

Its front legs crossed.

Its body twisted.

The enormous creature slammed shoulder-first into the cliff.

CRAAASH!

Stone exploded.

Kael had his answer.

The impact fractured several scales near the lower neck.

Small.

But visible.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

Weak point.

The Tyrant roared.

Then its body began glowing.

Mana surged through its muscles.

The creature forced itself upright.

The cables started to glow red from the pressure.

Kael immediately released them.

A fraction of a second later—

BOOM!

The Tyrant's stored force exploded outward.

All six cables were destroyed.

Kael raised an arm against the shockwave.

It stores the force it builds up.

The Tyrant turned.

Its eyes were fixed on him.

Kael slowly lowered his arm.

“So that's the real ability.”

The beast charged.

Kael ran.

Not away.

Across.

He crossed toward the dry riverbed.

The Tyrant followed.

Kael reached the first marker.

A small metallic disc hidden beneath the soil.

He stepped over it.

The Tyrant crushed it.

Kael immediately triggered another.

Metal rose from the ground.

Not enough to stop the beast.

Enough to change its direction.

The Tyrant swerved.

Kael moved again.

Another marker.

Another angle.

Another forced turn.

The monster began destroying everything around it.

Trees snapped.

Stone shattered.

The valley filled with dust.

Kael kept moving.

He wasn't attacking.

He was controlling distance.

The Tyrant charged again.

Kael jumped onto a boulder.

The beast smashed through it.

Kael landed behind the creature.

PR-02 came up.

BANG!

He targeted the damaged scales beneath its neck.

This time—

the round penetrated.

The Tyrant roared.

Kael immediately fired again.

BANG!

The second shot hit the same area.

The wound deepened.

Blood would have been visible, but Kael didn't wait to exploit it.

The Tyrant spun.

Its horn swept toward him.

Kael threw himself backward.

The horn missed.

Barely.

He landed hard and rolled.

The Tyrant didn't stop.

Its rear leg slammed downward.

Kael twisted away.

BOOM!

The ground cracked where he'd been.

Kael came up on one knee.

His shoulder throbbed.

Too close.

The Tyrant charged again.

Kael fired while retreating.

BANG!

The shot hit the shoulder.

BANG!

Another struck the lower jaw.

Neither stopped the creature.

But Kael wasn't trying to.

He was forcing it to turn.

The beast accelerated.

Kael ran toward another marker.

At the last second—

he stepped away.

The Tyrant charged directly over the position.

Kael activated it.

A heavy metal plate burst from the ground at an angle.

The Tyrant's front leg slammed into it.

Its trajectory changed.

It stumbled.

Kael saw the opening.

He attacked.

His katana flashed.

SHING!

The blade struck between two damaged scales.

The strike wasn't deep.

But it widened the existing fracture.

The Tyrant whipped its body sideways.

Kael barely pulled the katana away before the horns swept toward him.

He jumped backward.

The beast roared.

Then something changed.

The scales along its shoulders hardened.

Kael froze.

The damaged section beneath the neck partially closed.

Not regeneration.

Reinforcement.

It had identified the threat.

It's protecting the weakness.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“So you learn too.”

The Tyrant lowered its body.

Kael realized what came next.

It was charging.

But this time—

faster.

The Tyrant accelerated across the valley.

Kael ran toward the cliff.

At the final moment, he turned.

The creature followed.

Kael expected it.

He activated Metal Control.

Three anchors erupted from the ground.

The Tyrant struck them.

Instead of resisting the charge, Kael allowed the anchors to pull with it.

The metal cables wrapped around the creature's rear legs.

Kael redirected the force upward.

The Tyrant stumbled.

Its front legs struck the ground.

Its stored momentum surged through the body.

For a moment—

the creature was vulnerable.

Kael fired.

BANG!

PR-02 struck the weakened neck.

The reinforced scales cracked.

The Tyrant screamed.

Kael immediately followed with another shot.

BANG!

The second round drove deeper.

But the monster didn't fall.

Instead—

it released everything.

Its entire body glowed.

The stored kinetic force exploded.

The cables snapped.

The ground erupted beneath Kael.

He was thrown backward.

His body struck the ground hard.

Pain shot through his ribs.

His vision blurred for a moment.

The Tyrant charged again.

Kael pushed himself upright.

No time.

He reached for M-02.

The monster closed the distance.

Kael fired.

BANG!

The bullet struck the damaged section.

The Tyrant barely reacted.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

He had another tool.

The Mana-Breaker Round.

He loaded it.

The Tyrant accelerated.

Twenty meters.

Fifteen.

Ten.

Kael waited.

Five.

Three.

He fired.

BANG!

The round struck the damaged neck.

The effect was immediate.

The Tyrant's mana reinforcement disappeared.

Just for a moment.

But Kael felt it.

The pressure surrounding the creature collapsed.

Its charge weakened.

Its scales lost their reinforced hardness.

Kael moved.

Kael sprinted directly toward the monster.

The Tyrant tried to turn.

Too slow.

Kael drew the katana.

His Metal Control surged through the blade.

He didn't attack the strongest armor.

He targeted the fracture he had created himself.

SHING!

The katana struck.

The cracked scales split apart.

The Tyrant staggered.

Kael landed beneath its shoulder.

The creature's front leg swung toward him.

Kael brought his free hand up.

Metal Control.

A metal plate formed between them.

The impact shattered the plate.

But it bought him enough time.

Kael kicked off the broken metal and retreated.

The Tyrant roared.

Its mana was returning.

Kael glanced at his weapons.

PR-02.

M-02.

Katana.

HW-02.

The heavy weapon remained.

He had been saving it.

But the Tyrant had adapted to every predictable approach.

One wrong move with HW-02 and the creature could survive the impact or catch him during the slow firing cycle.

Kael needed certainty.

He looked at the ground.

His metal markers were almost gone.

The valley was destroyed.

His original battlefield no longer existed.

Then Kael noticed the terrain.

The Tyrant's repeated charges had created a deep trench through the valley.

And the creature was standing at the edge of it.

Kael smiled.

“I don't need another trap.”

He looked at the trench.

“I already have one.”

Kael ran.

The Tyrant followed.

The monster's speed increased.

Kael didn't change direction.

He ran directly toward the trench.

The Tyrant accelerated behind him.

Ten meters.

Eight.

Six.

Four.

Kael jumped across the trench.

The Tyrant followed.

But Kael had calculated its timing.

The creature landed with its front legs across the opposite edge.

Its rear legs dropped into the trench.

For a fraction of a second—

its body tilted.

Its momentum continued forward.

The damaged neck twisted.

The fractured armor opened.

Kael turned.

The Tyrant roared.

Its body fought to recover.

Kael raised M-02.

The last Mana-Breaker Round.

BANG!

The projectile struck the damaged section.

Mana reinforcement vanished.

Kael immediately raised PR-02.

BANG!

The penetrator entered the opening.

The Tyrant screamed.

Its front legs slipped.

Its entire upper body dropped forward.

Kael drew the katana.

He stepped in.

SHING!

The blade widened the existing fracture one final time.

The creature's body went still.

But it wasn't dead.

It was still fighting.

Kael stepped backward.

He raised HW-02.

The weapon's mana chamber began compressing.

The barrel vibrated.

The Tyrant lifted its head.

Kael met its eyes.

“You were stronger than me.”

The weapon reached maximum compression.

“But you kept giving me the same opening.”

Kael pulled the trigger.

BOOOOOOM!

The blast struck the already-ruptured section.

The impact tore through the weakened armor.

The Ironhide Tyrant collapsed into the trench.

The valley became silent.

Kael stood motionless for several seconds.

Then slowly lowered HW-02.

His breathing was heavy.

His shoulder hurt.

His ribs hurt.

His mana reserves were nearly exhausted.

Several of his markers were destroyed.

The cables were gone.

Two metal anchors had been bent beyond repair.

The Tyrant had nearly broken through every stage of his plan.

But Kael had adapted every time it did.

He looked at the battlefield.

The first restraint had failed.

So he redirected the charge.

The second plan had failed.

So he used repeated turns to stress the armor.

The Tyrant reinforced its weakness.

So Kael created a new opening.

The stored kinetic force turned against his original trap.

So he abandoned the trap.

And when his carefully prepared battlefield was destroyed—

he used the trench created by the enemy itself.

Kael exhaled.

“That…”

He looked at the corpse.

“…was a real fight.”

Level Thirty

The System appeared.

[Territory Lord defeated.]

[Experience acquired.]

[Level increased.]

[Level 30.]

Kael stared at the notification.

Then the next one appeared.

[Five Attribute Points available.]

Kael considered the battle before assigning them.

He needed more durability.

The Tyrant had forced him into several exchanges where one mistake could have ended the fight.

He allocated:

+1 Strength

+1 Agility

+2 Vitality

+1 Intelligence

[Attributes updated.]

Kael Darven

Level: 30

Strength: 26

Agility: 34

Vitality: 33

Intelligence: 33

Mana: 34

Metal Control: Mastery III

Bloodline Progress: 13%

Beast Path Compatibility: 4%

Then—

his hand began glowing.

A crimson pattern spread across his skin.

Kael frowned.

The System appeared.

[Level 30 Threshold reached.]

[Darven Bloodline responding.]

[Major Bloodline Evolution available.]

Kael stared at the words.

He had reached another threshold.

Level twenty had unlocked Darven Forge.

Now level thirty had awakened something else.

The crimson light intensified.

Kael felt something moving inside his bloodline.

Not power.

A memory.

Something ancient.

Something that had been waiting for him to reach this level.

Far away, within the Verdant Territory, the Horned Basilisk suddenly opened its eyes.

It had felt the deaths of two Territory Lords.

But this was different.

This was the Darven bloodline.

The Basilisk slowly raised its head toward the distant forest.

It remembered the humans who had once stood beside the mountain.

And for the first time since Kael entered its territory—

the Basilisk wondered what would happen when the Darven finally remembered everything.

Deep beneath the mountain, the ancient sealed entity opened its crimson eye.

Its voice echoed through the darkness.

“Thirty.”

Silence.

Then—

“Now the bloodline begins to remember.”
