THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 46 — The Bloodline Awakens
The valley was silent.
Kael stood beside the fallen Ironhide Tyrant, but he barely noticed the corpse anymore.
His attention was fixed on his hand.
Crimson light crawled beneath his skin.
It wasn't painful.
It was worse than pain.
It felt familiar.
As though something buried inside him had recognized the number thirty.
The System appeared again.
[Level 30 Threshold reached.]
[Darven Bloodline responding.]
[Major Bloodline Evolution available.]
Kael didn't touch the notification.
He waited.
Another appeared.
[Condition detected.]
[Bloodline Progress: 13%.]
[Darven Forge: Active.]
[Metal Control: Mastery III.]
[Weapon Creation proficiency: Sufficient.]
[Combat experience: Sufficient.]
[Understanding of Metal: Sufficient.]
Kael's eyes narrowed.
The bloodline wasn't simply checking his level.
It was checking what he had learned.
A third notification appeared.
[Major Bloodline Function unlocked.]
Description:A higher expression of the Darven bloodline.
Allows the inheritor to establish a permanent mana-bloodline connection with selected weapons and metallic constructs.
Connected armaments can:
- Receive Metal Control directly.
- Share mana through the bloodline.
- Be remotely recalled within a limited range.
- Change configuration through Metal Manifestation.
- Receive temporary reinforcement without direct contact.
Limitation:
The number of permanent Armament Bonds depends on Bloodline Progress and Bloodline Control.
Current Armament Capacity: 3
Kael stared at the screen.
Then he looked at his weapons.
His katana.
PR-02.
AR-03V.
Three weapons.
Three bonds.
“That can't be a coincidence.”
The System didn't answer.
Kael slowly reached for his katana.
The crimson pattern on his hand spread toward the weapon.
The ancient Darven katana trembled.
For a moment, the blade became completely still.
Then—
[Armament Bond established.]
Kael felt something connect.
Not ownership.
Not possession.
A channel.
His mana could travel through the blade without him consciously pushing it.
He released the hilt.
The katana remained beside him.
Kael raised his hand.
The sword moved.
SHING!
It flew into his palm.
Kael's eyes widened.
He had manipulated countless weapons with Metal Control before.
But this was different.
He didn't have to seize the metal first.
The sword responded directly to his bloodline.
He tossed it upward.
The blade rotated.
Kael moved his fingers.
The katana changed direction in midair and returned to him.
“Remote control…”
He smiled slightly.
Then his expression became serious.
“This changes combat.”
Kael looked at PR-02.The precision rifle had been essential against the Blackthorn Colossus and Ironhide Tyrant.
He placed his hand on the weapon.
Crimson energy spread across its frame.
[Armament Bond established.]
A second connection appeared.
Kael could feel the rifle.
Its weight.
Its mana channel.
Its internal structure.
Even the ammunition inside the magazine felt faintly connected.
He took ten steps backward.
The rifle remained on the ground.
Kael raised his hand.
The weapon rose.
It floated toward him.
He caught it.
The third bond went to AR-03V.
[Armament Bond established.]
The three weapons now carried faint crimson markings.
Kael looked at them.
[Permanent Armament Bonds: 3/3.]
He considered the remaining slot.
There wasn't one.
Not yet.
That meant choosing his final permanent weapon carefully.
The Darven katana had chosen itself.
PR-02 was his precision weapon.
AR-03V was his general-purpose assault weapon.
The next weapon would need to solve another problem.
He wouldn't waste the opportunity.
Kael turned toward the Ironhide Tyrant. Its body had already begun to cool.
He could feel something unusual.
The Territory Lord Core.
It wasn't inside his Space Ring anymore.
Kael had forgotten that it was still stored there from his previous hunt.
He took it out.
The black-green crystal immediately reacted to the bloodline awakening.
Pulse.
Kael froze.
The core displayed the territorial map again.
Only this time—
more information appeared.
A faint crimson line extended from the territory map toward the east.
Kael's expression changed.
“That's new.”
He followed the line.
It traveled through the forest.
Past the western territory.
Past the previously discovered damaged node.
Then—
it stopped.
At another missing connection.
Kael stared at the map.
Two damaged nodes.
One network.
And both were connected to the larger territory system.
He remembered the mountain.
The ancient guardian network.
The missing component.
The fourth path.
Someone—or something—had been severing these connections long before Kael arrived.
The Territory Lord Core suddenly displayed another message.
[Historical territorial data detected.]
[Time depth: Ancient.]
[Recent territorial changes detected.]
[Unknown actor.]
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“Unknown actor.”
He studied the map again.
Then noticed something else.
The damaged connections weren't random.
They formed a route.
A route leading toward the center of the Verdant Territory.
Toward the Basilisk.
Kael slowly closed his hand.
“So the Lords weren't simply ruling their own territories.”
They were part of something larger.
Kael didn't leave immediately. He needed to understand his new ability.
He raised his hand.
PR-02 floated beside him.
He mentally commanded it.
The rifle rotated.
Then changed.
The System reacted.
[Metal Manifestation available.]
Kael focused.
The rifle separated.
Its frame shifted.
The barrel shortened.
The stock folded.
Several components moved simultaneously.
Within seconds—
PR-02 had transformed from a precision rifle into a compact firearm.
Kael stared.
He hadn't expected that.
He switched it back.
The weapon reconstructed itself.
Not perfectly.
The system displayed a warning.
[Configuration alteration incomplete.]
[Current form unstable.]
Kael stopped.
“So it isn't true transformation.”
He examined the weapon.
It was closer to controlled reconstruction.
The underlying structure remained the same.
He couldn't turn a rifle into a completely different weapon instantly.
But—
he could alter components.
Barrel length.
Stock.
Grip.
Magazine position.
Mana chamber configuration.
That was enough.
Kael smiled.
“This is useful.”
More useful than a simple power increase.
His weapons could now adapt during combat.
But only if he developed proper configurations first.
Another problem to solve.
Another thing to study.
Kael liked that.
He returned to the Territory Lord Core. Now he understood how to use it.
Instead of absorbing it—
he connected it.
A temporary bloodline link formed.
The core opened.
The information inside flooded into his mind.
Kael saw the Blackthorn territory.
The Ironhide territory.
Their mana density.
Movement patterns.
Natural resources.
Territorial boundaries.
And then—
the network beneath both.
Kael's breathing slowed.
The two Lords had been connected.
But the connection wasn't stable.
It was being maintained by something else.
Something farther away.
Kael followed it.
East.
East.
Further east.
His mental map eventually reached a region he hadn't explored.
The System displayed:
[Territory Information: Insufficient.]
[Warning: High-Level Entity Detected.]
Kael immediately ended the connection.
He opened his eyes.
His expression had changed.
The warning had appeared only for a second.
But the pressure behind it was enough.
Not the Basilisk.
Something else.
Something Kael hadn't encountered.
He put the core away.
“I'll leave that alone.”
For now.
Kael spent the next several days recovering. He repaired the weapons damaged in the Ironhide battle.
PR-02 received a reinforced receiver.
AR-03V received a new mana-conduction channel.
HW-02 required a complete barrel replacement.
His metal anchors had to be rebuilt.
And his ammunition reserves were dangerously low.
That mattered.
Kael had learned something important.
Strong weapons didn't help if he couldn't use them repeatedly.
So he improved the manufacturing process.
He created batches of standard ammunition.
Then specialized ammunition.
Penetrators.
Mana-Breakers.
Armor-piercing rounds.
Venom-infused rounds.
He labeled everything.
Organized everything.
And tracked exactly how much mana each type required.
By the seventh day, his arsenal was more structured than ever.
Then—
the Territory Lord Core pulsed again.
Kael opened the map.
One of the unexplored regions had become clearer.
A name appeared.
[Territory identified.]
[Ashen Ridge.]
[Territory Lord detected.]
[Level: 39]
[Grade: Lord]
[Potential: Overlord]
Kael's eyes sharpened.
Another Lord.
Only one level stronger than the Ironhide Tyrant.
But the System provided another line.
[Trait detected: Unknown.]
Then another.
[Warning: Target intelligence unusually high.]
Kael went silent.
That mattered more than the level.
His last two Lord battles had been difficult because the monsters adapted.
This one was being explicitly marked as intelligent.
Kael looked at his three Armament Bonds.
Katana.
PR-02.
AR-03V.
His hand rested on the Territory Lord Core.
He smiled.
“Good.”
The battle was already becoming interesting.
Far away, on the edge of Ashen Ridge—
something opened its eyes.
It wasn't a beast.
It wasn't human.
It stood among the ruins of an ancient stone settlement, surrounded by enormous blackened weapons embedded into the ground.
It picked up one of those weapons.
Then looked toward the Verdant Territory.
A faint crimson reflection appeared in its eyes.
“Another Darven weapon…”
It examined the ancient metal.
“…but this one is changing.”
The creature smiled.
Then it looked toward Kael's direction.
“Come, little Darven.”
Its grip tightened around the weapon.
“Show me what your bloodline has become.”
And for the first time—
Kael was no longer hunting an enemy that had simply been waiting in its territory.
He had attracted the attention of something that had been waiting for a Darven.
