THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 48 — The Ashen Core

  • Next Chapter

The metallic core pulsed inside the Warforged's chest.

Once.

Twice.

Each pulse sent a wave through the ruins.

Kael stared at it.

The Ashen Core wasn't simply powering the creature.

It was connected to everything.

The weapons buried beneath the ridge.

The ancient ruins.

The mana channels.

The Territory Authority.

Even the creature's armor.

Kael tightened his grip on the katana.

“So that's your heart.”

The Warforged smiled.

“No.”

The ancient greatsword rose.

“It is my territory.”

The entire ridge shook.

Hundreds of broken weapons rose from the ground.

Kael immediately moved.

A sword crashed into the place where he had been standing.

Then another.

Another.

The Warforged didn't attack alone anymore.

The entire territory moved with it.

Kael activated his three Armament Bonds.

PR-02 floated behind his right shoulder.

AR-03V moved to his left.

His katana remained in his hand.

Three weapons.

Three angles.

Three independent attack paths.

The Warforged noticed.

“Show me.”

Kael vanished forward.

PR-02 fired.

BANG!

The round struck the Warforged's chest.

It twisted aside.

The bullet struck the armor next to the core.

A crack appeared.

Kael immediately followed with AR-03V.

BANG-BANG-BANG!

The Warforged brought its greatsword across its body.

Three bullets struck the blade instead.

The ancient weapon rang.

The Warforged lunged.

Kael blocked.

CLANG!

The impact drove him backward.

Before Kael could recover, a dozen swords rose from the ground.

They came from every direction.

Kael pulled his katana away from the clash.

His bloodline responded.

The blade disappeared.

SHING!

It reappeared behind the Warforged.

The Warforged turned.

Too late.

The katana struck its back.

A crack spread across the dark armor.

Kael recalled the sword instantly.

The Warforged looked over its shoulder.

“You're becoming faster.”

Kael didn't answer.

He fired again.

The Warforged raised a shield.

The projectile shattered it.

Kael immediately followed with another.

The second round struck the shoulder.

The creature staggered.

Kael moved in.

His katana struck.

The Warforged blocked.

Their weapons locked.

The creature's eyes burned.

“You think destroying the core will defeat me.”

Kael's expression didn't change.

“Will it?”

The Warforged smiled.

“No.”

The ground exploded.

Kael was thrown backward.

The Warforged's armor shifted.

The crack around the core closed.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The Ashen Core had repaired the damage.

So the core wasn't simply a weak point.

It was a source of regeneration.

Kael understood immediately.

I can't destroy the core while the territory is feeding it.

He looked around.

Thousands of ancient weapons remained embedded in the ground.

The network was reconnecting.

His previous disruption was already being repaired.

The Warforged raised its hand.

Every broken weapon in the territory turned toward Kael.

“Try again.”

The sky filled with metal.

Kael didn't attack the Warforged.

He attacked the network.

PR-02 fired.

BANG!

A weapon-node shattered.

AR-03V fired.

BANG-BANG!

Two more nodes broke.

His katana flew from his hand.

It cut through a chain connecting several weapons.

SHING!

The network flickered.

Kael moved.

Another node.

Another.

The Warforged immediately understood.

“You're trying to starve the core.”

Kael smiled.

“So you noticed.”

The Warforged disappeared.

Kael's instincts screamed.

He spun.

CLANG!

The greatsword struck his katana.

The impact nearly forced him to his knees.

The Warforged attacked again.

Kael blocked.

Again.

Kael moved.

A third strike came from below.

Kael barely jumped over it.

The Warforged wasn't relying on the territory now.

It was fighting directly.

And it was extremely skilled.

Its movements were precise.

No wasted motion.

No unnecessary swings.

Every strike forced Kael into a worse position.

Kael switched weapons.

PR-02 appeared in his hand.

BANG!

The shot was fired at point-blank range.

The Warforged tilted its head.

The bullet passed beside it.

Its greatsword swept horizontally.

Kael ducked.

The blade passed over him.

Kael planted his palm against the ground.

Metal Control.

A spike erupted beneath the Warforged.

The creature jumped.

Kael fired.

BANG!

The round struck its leg.

The armor cracked.

The Warforged landed.

Kael charged.

Katana.

One strike.

Two.

Three.

The Warforged blocked all three.

The fourth came from PR-02 through Armament Recall.

The rifle fired from behind Kael.

BANG!

The Warforged barely twisted.

The shot struck its side.

Kael saw the opening.

He moved.

The Warforged countered.

The greatsword struck his shoulder.

Kael was thrown sideways.

He hit the ground and rolled.

Pain flashed across his body.

The Warforged approached.

“You are still too dependent on prediction.”

Kael slowly stood.

“What?”

“You calculate what your opponent will do.”

The creature lifted its sword.

“That works against beasts.”

Its eyes narrowed.

“It works poorly against someone who understands your calculations.”

Kael wiped dirt from his sleeve.

Then smiled.

“That's true.”

The Warforged paused.

“But there's one thing you forgot.”

Kael raised his hand.

The buried weapons around the creature began to tremble.

“I calculate for myself too.”

Kael activated every remaining metal marker.

The valley responded.

Not with a single attack.

With movement.

Ancient swords pulled from the earth.

Broken spearheads rose.

Metal chains emerged from beneath the ruins.

But Kael didn't send them toward the Warforged.

He sent them around it.

A ring formed.

The Warforged immediately realized the purpose.

“You're rebuilding the network.”

Kael shook his head.

“No.”

He pulled harder.

The metal ring tightened.

“I'm separating you from it.”

The ground between the Warforged and several major nodes erupted.

Metal barriers rose.

They didn't attack.

They blocked the mana pathways.

The Warforged tried to move.

Kael redirected the barriers.

Another route closed.

The Ashen Core flickered.

For the first time—

its glow weakened.

The Warforged's expression changed.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“There.”

The core's regeneration slowed.

Not enough.

But enough.

Kael raised PR-02.

Weakness Lock.

The System analyzed the exposed chest.

[Core protection reduced.]

[Territorial supply interrupted.]

[Weakness confirmed.]

Kael fired.

BANG!

The penetrator round struck the armor surrounding the core.

A crack appeared.

The Warforged roared.

It slammed its sword into the ground.

The entire Ashen Ridge erupted.

Kael was forced backward.

The barriers shattered.

The blocked mana channels reopened.

The Warforged's armor began repairing itself.

Kael looked at his ammunition.

Only four specialized rounds remained.

Two penetrators.

Two Mana-Breakers.

His mana was dropping.

His body was tiring.

The Warforged stood again.

Kael realized something.

I can't win by gradually dismantling the territory.

It would repair faster than he could destroy it.

He needed a decisive sequence.

The Warforged lifted its greatsword.

The Ashen Armory activated again.

Thousands of weapons rose.

But this time, they didn't all attack Kael.

They formed around the Warforged.

Armor.

Shields.

Blades.

Spears.

A massive metallic shell formed around its body.

Kael stared.

The Warforged was using the entire territory as armor.

The core disappeared completely.

“There is no opening now,” the creature said.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The Warforged charged.

The enormous armored mass crossed the valley.

Kael ran.

Not away from it.

Toward the ruins.

The Warforged followed.

Kael activated Metal Control.

A stone wall collapsed.

The creature crashed through it.

Kael emerged from the other side.

Another wall.

Another turn.

Another.

The Warforged chased him through the ruins.

Kael was building distance.

But he wasn't retreating.

He was searching.

Then he saw it.

A massive stone platform beneath the central ruins.

Ancient symbols covered its surface.

A damaged crimson handprint sat in the center.

It looked familiar.

The same symbol he had seen near the mountain.

Kael stopped.

The Warforged emerged from the dust.

“You recognize it.”

Kael stared at the handprint.

“You know the Darven network.”

The Warforged's smile disappeared.

“I know what it was built to do.”

“What?”

The creature didn't answer.

It raised its sword.

Kael's eyes hardened.

“Then I'll ask after I beat you.”

The Warforged charged.

Kael waited.

The Warforged came closer.

Five meters.

Three.

Two.

Kael raised his hand.

Metal Control.

The ancient platform activated.

The buried metal beneath it rose.

The Warforged stopped.

Its armored body suddenly locked in place.

The entire Ashen Armory flickered.

The creature stared at Kael.

“How?”

Kael smiled.

“You said every weapon was replaceable.”

The metal beneath the platform began moving.

“I realized something.”

The platform wasn't part of the Ashen Armory.

It was older.

It wasn't controlled by the Warforged.

It was controlling the network beneath it.

Kael had found the original control point.

He wasn't fighting the territory anymore.

He was hijacking its foundation.

The Warforged roared.

The armored shell around its body shattered.

Thousands of weapons fell from the sky.

Kael's opportunity appeared.

He recalled PR-02.

The rifle flew into his hand.

He loaded the first Mana-Breaker Round.

The Warforged ripped free from the metallic restraints.

It charged.

Kael fired.

BANG!

The round struck the chest.

The Ashen Core flickered.

Mana reinforcement vanished.

For one second.

Kael fired the first penetrator.

BANG!

The chest armor cracked.

The Warforged kept moving.

Kael stepped aside.

His katana flew past him.

He caught it.

Then struck the crack.

SHING!

The damaged armor split.

The core became visible.

A glowing metallic sphere.

The Warforged roared.

Its hand reached for Kael.

Kael ducked.

The creature swung.

Kael moved under the blade.

He could feel the heat from the core.

One more opening.

He reached into his weapon case.

The second Mana-Breaker.

He loaded it.

The Warforged realized what he was doing.

“No.”

Kael fired.

BANG!

The core flickered again.

The Warforged's power collapsed.

Kael immediately activated his Armament Bond.

PR-02 changed configuration.

The barrel lengthened.

The mana chamber compressed.

A crimson glow spread through the rifle.

The final penetrator was loaded.

Kael aimed directly at the core.

The Warforged moved.

Kael fired.

BOOM!

The projectile struck.

The core cracked.

A pulse of energy erupted through the Ashen Ridge.

Every ancient weapon trembled.

The Warforged staggered.

But it remained standing.

Kael's eyes widened.

It had survived.

The core was damaged.

But not destroyed.

The Warforged raised its sword one last time.

Kael was almost out of mana.

His arms felt heavy.

His breathing was rough.

The creature stepped forward.

“You are still too weak.”

Kael looked at the katana in his hand.

Then at the broken core.

Then at the thousands of ancient weapons scattered around them.

He understood.

He didn't need another stronger attack.

He needed the territory itself.

Kael planted the katana into the ground.

His remaining mana flowed into the blade.

The crimson bloodline energy spread outward.

Darven Armament.

The three bonded weapons responded.

PR-02.

AR-03V.

Katana.

All three connected to the ancient platform.

Kael pulled.

Metal screamed.

The entire Ashen Ridge reacted.

Every weapon embedded in the territory shifted toward the same point.

The Warforged's eyes widened.

“You wouldn't.”

Kael gritted his teeth.

“Watch me.”

The weapons slammed together around the damaged Ashen Core.

Not attacking the Warforged.

Compressing the territory around the core.

The creature roared.

The core cracked again.

Then—

CRACK.

A second fracture.

Then a third.

The Warforged screamed.

Kael pulled harder.

His mana reserves emptied.

His bloodline burned.

The ancient platform cracked beneath him.

The Ashen Core shattered.

A wave of energy exploded outward.

Kael was thrown backward.

The Warforged disappeared inside the light.

For several seconds—

nothing moved.

Then the weapons began falling.

One.

Two.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

The sky cleared.

Ash drifted through the air.

Kael slowly pushed himself up.

He looked toward the center of the valley.

The Ashen Warforged was gone.

Only a dark metallic crystal remained.

The System appeared.

[Territory Lord defeated.]

[Ashen Warforged — Level 39 — Lord.]

[Experience acquired.]

[Level increased.]

Kael stared at the notification.

Then another appeared.

[Territory Lord Hunt Progress: 3.]

The third Lord.

Dead.

Kael slowly walked toward the crystal.

But before he reached it—

the ancient platform activated.

A final message appeared.

[Ancient Ashen Territory Authority detected.]

[Temporary access granted.]

[Historical memory available.]

Kael stopped.

A projection appeared above the broken platform.

Four human figures stood around the same structure.

One of them carried the Darven katana.

Another wore armor covered in metallic symbols.

The third held a strange firearm.

The fourth had their hands on the crimson network.

And beside them—

the Ashen Warforged was kneeling.

Not attacking.

Serving.

Kael's expression changed.

The projection spoke.

“The fourth guardian cannot be a beast.”

The image shifted.

“It must be a bloodline.”

Another voice followed.

“When the network fails, the Darven must reconnect it.”

Kael stared.

So the Darven Fourth Path wasn't merely an emergency replacement.

It had been part of the original design.

The projection flickered.

Then one final sentence appeared.

“But never allow the Darven to command the entire network.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The image disappeared.

He looked down at the dark crystal.

A new notification appeared.

[Ashen Territory Core acquired.]

Grade: Lord

Condition: Damaged

Potential Functions:

  • Territory Manipulation
  • Weapon Network Control
  • Mana Storage
  • Ancient Network Synchronization

Warning:

Full integration may conflict with the Darven Fourth Path.

Kael frowned.

“So I can't simply absorb it.”

That was becoming a familiar pattern.

Power could be used.

But understanding had to come first.

He stored the core.

Then—

the System appeared again.

[Level 31.]

Kael exhaled.

Five points.

He assigned:

+1 Strength

+2 Agility

+1 Vitality

+1 Intelligence

Kael Darven

Level: 31

Strength: 27

Agility: 36

Vitality: 34

Intelligence: 34

Mana: 35

Metal Control: Mastery III

Bloodline Progress: 13%

Beast Path Compatibility: 4%

Kael looked around the ruined Ashen Ridge.

Three Territory Lords.

Three different battlefields.

Three different solutions.

And each fight had taught him something new.

But the final message from the ancient memory troubled him.

Never allow the Darven to command the entire network.

Why?

What would happen if he did?

Kael turned toward the mountain.

Then stopped.

A faint tremor passed through the ground.

His System opened by itself.

[Ancient Territory Network disturbance detected.]

[Western Node: unstable.]

[Eastern Node: unstable.]

[Mountain Node: declining.]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Three Lords had died.

And instead of becoming more stable—

the ancient network was beginning to fail.

Then another notification appeared.

[Foreign interference detected.]

[Source: Unknown.]

Kael looked toward the distant eastern forest.

Something had begun moving through the network.

Something that wasn't a Territory Lord.

Something that knew exactly which nodes to attack.

And somewhere far away—

the Verdant Horned Basilisk opened its eyes.

It raised its head toward the mountain.

For the first time, it wasn't looking toward Kael.

It was looking toward something approaching from the east.

The Basilisk whispered:

“They're cutting the network again.”

Below the mountain—

the ancient sealed entity laughed.

“Finally.”

“Someone has remembered how to open the door.”
