THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 49 — The Broken Network

  • Next Chapter

The Ashen Ridge was dying.

Kael could feel it.

The gray ground beneath his boots no longer carried the same pressure as before.

The thousands of ancient weapons that had once floated above the battlefield lay scattered across the ruins.

Some had broken.

Others had simply gone still.

The crimson mana flowing through the territory had almost disappeared.

Kael stood before the remains of the Ashen Warforged.

Its body had vanished when the Ashen Core shattered.

Only one thing remained.

A dark metallic crystal.

Kael crouched beside it.

He didn't touch it immediately.

His Metal Sense revealed something strange.

The crystal was not completely dead.

A faint current still ran through its center.

Kael reached out carefully.

The moment his fingers touched it—

[Ashen Territory Core detected.]

[Condition: Severely damaged.]

[Territory Authority: Dormant.]

[Ancient Network compatibility detected.]

Kael frowned.

“Again with the ancient network.”

He had encountered enough strange artifacts to know that rushing was dangerous.

He created a circle of metal around himself.

If the core reacted violently, he could sever the connection.

Then he injected the smallest amount of mana possible.

The crystal responded.

The world around him disappeared.

The Memory

Kael found himself standing in the Ashen Ridge.

But it wasn't the Ashen Ridge he knew.

The valley was green.

The ruins were intact.

Hundreds of enormous metallic structures stood throughout the territory.

And in the center—

the Ashen Warforged.

It was different.

Its armor wasn't dark.

Its body was cleaner.

Its eyes weren't crimson.

They were blue.

And it was kneeling.

Four humans stood before it.

Kael recognized one immediately.

The sword.

The posture.

The Darven crest.

The same bloodline signature he had felt when touching the ancient structures.

A Darven.

The other three humans were different.

One carried an enormous shield.

One held a strange firearm.

The fourth wore robes covered in magical symbols.

The Darven placed a hand against the Warforged's head.

“You will serve as the Ashen Guardian.”

The Warforged lowered its head.

“I will.”

Another human stepped forward.

“Then the eastern network is complete.”

The robed figure looked toward the distant mountain.

“Not complete.”

The others turned.

“The Verdant network remains unstable.”

The Darven's expression became serious.

“And the three beasts?”

“Bound.”

“The ancient entity?”

A long silence followed.

“Contained.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The image shifted.

He saw the mountain.

The same mountain where he had met the three guardians.

But thousands of years ago it had looked different.

There were four enormous paths leading from the mountain.

One toward the eastern forest.

One toward the west.

One toward the north.

And one—

directly toward a structure shaped like a human hand.

Kael's eyes widened.

The Fourth Path.

The memory continued.

The robed human pointed toward it.

“The network requires four authorities.”

The shield bearer spoke.

“Three territorial guardians.”

The Darven answered.

“And the bloodline.”

The fourth human looked toward him.

“What happens when the bloodline fails?”

The Darven's expression hardened.

“It cannot.”

“And if it does?”

The Darven remained silent.

Finally—

“Then the seal weakens.”

The memory suddenly distorted.

The scene changed.

The four humans were gone.

The Ashen Warforged stood alone.

Its blue eyes had become crimson.

Its body was damaged.

Weapons were scattered everywhere.

The territory was burning.

A voice echoed.

“The Darven is gone.”

Another voice answered.

“Then the Fourth Path is broken.”

The Warforged raised its head.

“Who broke it?”

No answer.

The memory shattered.

Kael opened his eyes.

He was back in the ruined Ashen Ridge.

His breathing was heavy.

The Ashen Core remained in his hand.

“So the network really was built by humans.”

He looked toward the mountain.

“And the Darven bloodline was always part of it.”

But one thing bothered him.

The memory had shown the Fourth Path failing.

Yet his own System had activated it.

That meant—

someone had partially restored something that was supposed to remain broken.

Kael looked at the Ashen Core.

“And you were guarding one of the pieces.”

The crystal pulsed faintly.

Kael returned to his workshop.

The Ashen Core sat inside a containment frame.

He didn't absorb it.

He didn't merge it.

Instead, he studied it.

The crystal contained three distinct energies.

Territory mana.

Ancient network energy.

And something else.

Kael focused.

A fourth energy signature existed deep inside.

It was incredibly faint.

Almost impossible to detect.

But Kael recognized it.

Metal Control.

His bloodline was reacting to the core.

The System confirmed it.

[Ashen Territory Core resonance detected.]

[Darven Bloodline compatibility: 71%.]

[Direct integration remains unsafe.]

[Reason:]

[Core contains residual territorial consciousness.]

Kael's expression became serious.

“Territorial consciousness?”

The answer was obvious.

The Ashen Warforged hadn't simply controlled the territory.

Some part of it had become fused with the territory itself.

Kael looked at the crystal.

“That means you're not completely dead.”

The crystal remained silent.

Kael didn't trust it.

He placed it back into containment.

He would deal with it later.

That evening, Kael opened the territorial map he had copied from the previous Lord Cores.

He now had information from three Territory Lords.

Blackthorn Colossus.

Ironhide Tyrant.

Ashen Warforged.

He combined them.

The result was alarming.

The territories formed a massive network.

Blackthorn controlled one branch.

Ironhide another.

Ashen Ridge had been an eastern node.

And all three eventually connected to—

the Verdant Territory.

Kael zoomed in.

The network was broken in multiple places.

Not naturally.

Not randomly.

Someone had cut it.

The locations formed a sequence.

One after another.

Like a path.

Kael followed it.

His map moved east.

Then north.

Then toward the mountain.

His expression hardened.

“Someone is attacking the network from the outside.”

The System appeared.

[Foreign interference confirmed.]

[Pattern: Deliberate.]

[Origin: Unknown.]

Kael stared at the final line.

Then another notification appeared.

[Estimated objective:]

[Network destabilization.]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“What happens if they succeed?”

The System didn't answer immediately.

Then:

[Ancient Seal integrity may fall below stable threshold.]

Kael's expression changed.

The ancient entity.

This wasn't simply a territorial problem.

Someone was trying to weaken the network that helped maintain the seal.

And if the network collapsed—

the ancient entity beneath the mountain could become much harder to contain.

Kael looked toward the mountain.

“We're running out of time.”

A deep roar echoed through the forest.

Kael immediately grabbed his weapons.

But the sound wasn't coming from nearby.

It was coming from the Verdant Territory.

Another roar followed.

Then another.

Kael activated the territorial map.

One of the central mana pathways had changed.

Something was moving through it.

Very quickly.

Kael stepped outside.

The forest was strangely still.

Then a massive shape appeared between the trees.

The Verdant Horned Basilisk.

Level 41.

Grade Lord.

Potential Overlord.

Territory Lord.

Kael immediately reached for his katana.

But the Basilisk stopped.

It didn't attack.

Instead, it lowered its enormous head.

Its crimson eyes remained fixed on Kael.

“You killed three.”

Kael's expression remained calm.

“Yes.”

The Basilisk studied him.

“Blackthorn.”

“Its core is in my possession.”

“Ironhide.”

“Dead.”

“Ashen.”

Kael paused.

“Dead.”

The Basilisk's eyes narrowed.

“Then the eastern network has lost its Lord.”

Kael frowned.

“You knew the Warforged?”

“I knew what it was.”

The Basilisk looked toward the distant Ashen Ridge.

“It was not always your enemy.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“What happened?”

“Time.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the only answer I have.”

The Basilisk slowly moved closer.

Kael didn't retreat.

“Three Lords died,” it continued. “And each death weakened the territory network.”

Kael looked at it.

“So you think I made the situation worse.”

The Basilisk's gaze remained steady.

“I think you accelerated something that was already happening.”

Kael said nothing.

That distinction mattered.

The network had been damaged before he arrived.

The Lords had not caused the original problem.

Someone else had.

The Basilisk lowered its head.

“There is more.”

Kael waited.

“The one cutting the network has entered my territory.”

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“Where?”

The Basilisk turned toward the east.

“The Fourth Guardian's broken path.”

Kael immediately understood.

The missing guardian connection.

The one discovered near the mountain.

“Why haven't you attacked them?”

The Basilisk's expression became strange.

“Because they are not attacking me.”

Kael frowned.

“They are cutting the network around you.”

“Yes.”

“Then what are they doing?”

The Basilisk looked directly at him.

“Watching you.”

Kael immediately activated Metal Sense.

Nothing.

He switched to ordinary perception.

Nothing.

The forest seemed empty.

Then—

a single leaf fell.

Kael looked up.

The leaf was floating downward.

But it wasn't falling naturally.

Something had touched it.

A faint distortion appeared between two trees.

Kael raised PR-02.

BANG!

The projectile tore through the distortion.

A metallic sound echoed.

Someone had blocked it.

The Basilisk lifted its head.

“There.”

Kael saw movement.

A figure stood on a distant branch.

Dark armor.

Long cloak.

No visible face.

Kael's System activated.

[Threat Analysis.]

[Target cannot be fully analyzed.]

Level: 34

Grade: Commander

Potential: Unknown

Origin: Unknown

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The figure looked at him.

Then—

it looked at the Basilisk.

Then the mountain.

Then back at Kael.

It raised one hand.

A small metallic object flew through the air.

Kael caught it with Metal Control before it reached the ground.

A coin.

Black metal.

A crimson symbol was engraved on it.

Kael stared.

The symbol was identical to the one he had seen in the ancient memory.

The figure spoke.

“The Fourth Path is awake.”

Kael tightened his grip.

“Who are you?”

The figure ignored the question.

“You've killed three Lords.”

Kael raised PR-02.

“Answer me.”

The stranger continued.

“Every Lord you kill opens another route.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“What route?”

The figure finally looked toward the mountain.

“The route to the door.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“Who wants the door open?”

For the first time, the figure laughed.

“Does it matter?”

Kael raised the rifle.

“It matters to me.”

The stranger's body began fading into the distortion.

Before disappearing, it spoke one final sentence.

“Ask the Basilisk what happened to the Fourth Guardian.”

Then it vanished.

Kael fired.

BANG!

The bullet struck empty air.

Gone.

The Basilisk remained completely still.

Kael slowly turned toward it.

“What was that?”

The Basilisk didn't answer.

“Fourth Guardian.”

Still nothing.

Kael's eyes hardened.

“You know something.”

The Basilisk finally spoke.

“Yes.”

“What?”

The creature looked toward the mountain.

“The guardian that came before the Verdant Fang Ravager.”

Kael remembered Chapter 40.

The earlier guardian.

The one that had disappeared long ago.

“You said it disappeared.”

“It did.”

“Where?”

The Basilisk was silent for several seconds.

Then—

“Below the mountain.”

Kael froze.

The forest went silent.

The Basilisk's voice became quieter.

“It was not killed.”

Kael's eyes widened.

“It was taken.”

“By the ancient entity?”

“No.”

The Basilisk's gaze shifted toward the ground.

“By the network itself.”

A tremor passed through the earth.

Kael immediately looked toward the mountain.

The seal had changed.

His System opened.

[Ancient Seal Integrity: 85%]

Then—

[84%]

Kael's expression hardened.

Another point had disappeared.

The Basilisk raised its head.

“The fourth guardian is still somewhere beneath the mountain.”

Kael stared toward the distant peak.

And then—

a sound came from beneath the earth.

Not a roar.

Not a voice.

A metallic knock.

Once.

Twice.

Then three times.

Like something trapped below was knocking against a door.

Kael's blood ran cold.

The System appeared.

[Unknown Guardian Signature detected.]

[Location: Beneath Mountain.]

[Status: Active.]

Then a final message appeared.

[WARNING]

[The Fourth Guardian has noticed the Darven.]
