Chapter 51 — The Battle Beneath the Mountain

  • Next Chapter

BANG!

Kael's first shot shattered the silence.

The round struck the lead hunter's weapon, knocking its muzzle aside before he could fire.

At the same instant—

BOOM!

A second hunter launched a mana-infused projectile toward Kael.

Kael twisted.

The attack passed his shoulder and struck the stone wall behind him.

Dust filled the chamber.

“Protect the Guardian!” Kael shouted.

The Fourth Guardian moved.

Its chains rattled.

“I cannot leave this position.”

Kael glanced at it.

“Then I'll bring the battlefield to you.”

He raised his hand.

Darven Armament.

PR-02 appeared beside his right shoulder.

AR-03V floated behind him.

His katana remained in his hand.

Three weapons.

Three directions.

The hunters advanced.

Twelve against one.

Except—

Kael wasn't alone anymore.

The Fourth Guardian raised one hand.

Green mana spread across the chamber.

The ancient walls responded.

The floor beneath the hunters shifted.

One hunter lost his footing.

Kael fired.

BANG!

The hunter's firearm was knocked from his hand.

Another rushed forward.

Kael's katana moved.

CLANG!

Their weapons collided.

The hunter stepped back.

Kael fired AR-03V past him.

BANG-BANG-BANG!

The remaining hunters scattered.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

They weren't panicking.

They were reorganizing.

They're trained.

The lead hunter raised his hand.

“Formation Three.”

The group immediately split.

Four moved left.

Four moved right.

Three remained behind him.

Kael's expression hardened.

They had already studied his fighting style.

The lead hunter pointed toward him.

“Don't engage the Guardian.”

“Separate the Darven from it.”

Kael smiled slightly.

“So that's your plan.”

The leader answered calmly.

“You cannot protect yourself and the Guardian simultaneously.”

Kael raised his katana.

“Let's test that.”

Four hunters on the left attacked first.

Not directly.

One fired at the ceiling.

Another struck the floor.

The third launched a chain.

The fourth targeted Kael's escape route.

Kael immediately understood.

They're controlling my movement.

He didn't retreat.

He moved forward.

PR-02 fired.

BANG!

The chain broke.

AR-03V fired.

BANG-BANG!

Two weapons were knocked aside.

Kael crossed the remaining distance.

His katana struck the first hunter's weapon.

CLANG!

He twisted.

The hunter stumbled.

Kael struck the armor over his chest with the flat of the blade.

The man fell backward.

Before Kael could continue—

a second hunter attacked from behind.

His Armament Bond reacted.

The katana disappeared from Kael's hand.

It appeared behind him.

CLANG!

The attack was blocked.

Kael immediately recalled the blade.

He spun.

His knee struck the hunter's center of balance.

The man fell.

Kael didn't finish either opponent.

He moved.

That was the important part.

Never stay where the enemy expected.

A projectile struck the ground where he'd been standing.

BOOM!

Stone exploded.

Kael crossed toward the Guardian.

Then stopped.

A hunter stood between them.

Level 35.

Heavy armor.

Large shield.

The man lowered his stance.

“You aren't getting past me.”

Kael studied him.

Shield.

Heavy weapon.

Close-range specialist.

Behind him—

two ranged hunters.

Kael smiled.

“Then I'll go through you.”

The shield hunter charged.

Kael met him.

CLANG!

The impact pushed Kael backward.

The man's strength was higher than expected.

He attacked again.

Kael blocked.

The shield slammed into his shoulder.

Pain shot through his arm.

Kael stepped sideways.

The shield followed.

He struck the man's knee.

The armor absorbed it.

The hunter smiled.

“You're not strong enough.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“No.”

He looked at the shield.

“Your shield is just too good.”

The hunter didn't understand.

Kael released his katana.

The blade vanished.

The hunter instinctively raised his shield.

At that exact moment—

PR-02 floated overhead.

BANG!

The round struck the shield from above.

The impact forced the hunter's arm downward.

Kael's katana reappeared beside his hand.

He stepped past the shield.

The blade struck the weapon grip.

CLANG!

The hunter's weapon flew away.

Kael immediately kicked him backward.

He didn't kill him.

He simply moved on.

The ranged hunters fired.

Kael dropped low.

The shots passed over him.

AR-03V answered.

BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG!

The ranged hunters dove behind cover.

Kael had created his opening.

He pushed deeper into the chamber.

The Fourth Guardian suddenly shouted.

“Down!”

Kael ducked without questioning.

A green wave passed over him.

The ancient chains around the Guardian glowed.

Then one chain launched across the chamber.

It struck a hunter.

CRASH!

The man was thrown against a pillar.

Kael looked back.

“You can attack.”

“Only within the network's boundary.”

The Guardian's expression hardened.

“And only while the seal remains stable.”

Kael understood.

The Guardian's power was restricted.

It couldn't leave the central position.

But inside its own boundary—

it could still fight.

Kael smiled.

“That's enough.”

The hunters weren't expecting it.

The fourth hunter's formation broke.

The Guardian lifted its other hand.

The ground rose.

Ancient green crystal formations emerged.

Three hunters were forced apart.

Kael immediately targeted the gaps.

PR-02.

BANG!

One weapon destroyed.

AR-03V.

BANG-BANG!

Another hunter disarmed.

Katana.

CLANG!

A third opponent was forced backward.

Kael moved between them.

For the first time, the twelve hunters were no longer operating as one unit.

The leader finally moved.

He drew a long black firearm from behind his back.

Not ordinary metal.

Kael felt it immediately.

Darven Metal.

His eyes narrowed.

“You have Darven metal.”

The leader aimed.

“Yes.”

“Where did you get it?”

“From someone who doesn't want you to have it.”

He fired.

Kael's expression changed.

The projectile was faster than every attack so far.

He couldn't dodge completely.

His Armament Bond reacted.

PR-02 snapped in front of him.

BOOM!

The rifle was knocked sideways.

Kael stepped back.

The projectile tore across his armor instead of hitting his chest.

A sharp pain spread across his side.

The leader didn't waste time.

He fired again.

Kael moved.

Again.

The third shot forced him behind a pillar.

Kael looked at PR-02.

A crack had appeared along the receiver.

His weapon had blocked the attack.

But barely.

That's not a normal firearm.

Kael looked at the leader.

The weapon was dark silver.

Its design was unmistakably similar to Darven engineering.

But unlike Kael's weapons—

it was old.

Very old.

The leader noticed his expression.

“You recognize it.”

Kael stepped out from behind the pillar.

“I recognize the design.”

The leader aimed again.

“Then recognize this.”

The weapon's barrel began glowing.

Mana compression.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

It's going to fire something stronger.

He had two seconds.

Maybe less.

Kael made his choice.

He didn't target the leader.

He targeted the ceiling.

PR-02 fired.

BANG!

The round struck an ancient metal support.

Kael used Metal Control.

The support broke.

A massive section of stone collapsed between him and the leader.

CRASH!

The chamber filled with dust.

The leader disappeared behind the rubble.

Kael exhaled.

“Not yet.”

The Guardian suddenly looked at Kael.

“They aren't trying to defeat you.”

Kael turned.

“What?”

“They've been testing you.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The hunters had been strangely careful.

Even when they had openings—

they hadn't finished him.

They had forced him away from the deeper chamber.

They had kept their distance.

They had separated him from the Guardian.

Kael looked toward the sealed passage beneath the chamber.

“They want the door.”

The Guardian nodded.

“The leader has already reached the control path.”

Kael's expression changed.

He immediately looked at the rubble.

The commander was gone.

Kael's Metal Sense spread through the chamber.

He detected twelve human signatures.

Eleven.

He froze.

“One is missing.”

The Guardian answered.

“Below.”

Kael looked toward the floor.

A small black symbol appeared on the stone.

The same crimson symbol from the mysterious observer's coin.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

The missing hunter had reached the lower chamber.

The seal.

Kael turned toward the opening.

“I'll go.”

The Guardian shook its head.

“No.”

Kael frowned.

“You can't leave.”

“And neither should you.”

A deep vibration passed through the floor.

THOOM.

The Guardian's chains tightened.

“The lower chamber isn't a battlefield.”

“Then what is it?”

“A mouth.”

Kael stared.

Another vibration.

THOOM.

The Guardian's silver eyes hardened.

“If the hunter opens the wrong structure, you won't be fighting him.”

Kael understood.

“You'll be fighting what's beneath him.”

“Yes.”

Kael didn't hesitate.

He ran toward the lower passage.

Three hunters tried to intercept him.

PR-02 fired.

BANG!

The first weapon flew from its owner's hands.

AR-03V followed.

BANG-BANG!

The second hunter stumbled.

Kael's katana struck the third's shield.

CLANG!

He pushed past.

He wasn't trying to defeat them.

He was trying to reach the lower chamber before the missing hunter.

The passage opened.

Kael jumped.

The floor dropped away beneath him.

He landed on an ancient metal platform.

Below—

darkness.

Kael activated Mana Manipulation.

A small sphere of light appeared.

The platform extended downward.

A staircase.

At the bottom stood one figure.

The missing hunter.

He was kneeling beside an enormous circular seal.

His hand was pressed against it.

Black energy flowed from his palm.

Kael raised PR-02.

“Step away.”

The hunter didn't turn.

“You're too late.”

Kael aimed.

“Move.”

The hunter laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

The seal began glowing.

“This wasn't designed to keep something inside.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“What?”

“It was designed to keep something asleep.”

The circular seal cracked.

Kael's instincts screamed.

He fired.

BANG!

The shot struck the hunter's shoulder.

He fell sideways.

The black energy remained connected to the seal.

Kael rushed forward.

He reached the seal.

The System appeared.

[Ancient Sealing Structure detected.]

[Integrity: 80%.]

[External interference detected.]

[Forced awakening sequence: 7%.]

Kael's eyes widened.

The hunter hadn't been trying to break the seal.

He was trying to wake the entity while keeping the seal around it.

A controlled awakening.

Kael looked at the man.

“Why?”

The hunter smiled despite the pain.

“We don't need it to escape.”

He pointed toward the seal.

“We only need it to notice the world again.”

Kael's expression hardened.

Then—

a crimson line appeared across the circular seal.

[Forced awakening sequence: 8%.]

The entire mountain shook.

Kael raised his hand.

Metal Control.

The ancient metal surrounding the seal responded.

He tried to shut it down.

Nothing happened.

The structure rejected him.

[Insufficient authority.]

Kael gritted his teeth.

The Darven Fourth Path.

The memory.

The network.

The handprint.

He suddenly understood.

The seal wasn't accepting Metal Control alone.

It needed the bloodline.

Kael pressed his palm against the center.

Crimson energy spread through the ancient metal.

The seal reacted.

[Darven Bloodline detected.]

[Fourth Path recognized.]

The black awakening energy began slowing.

Kael pushed harder.

The hunter stared at him.

“No…”

Kael gritted his teeth.

The seal's cracks began closing.

[Forced awakening sequence: 8% → 7%]

The hunter's eyes widened.

“You can control it?”

“No.”

Kael looked at the seal.

“But I can stop you.”

The mountain shook again.

The hunter suddenly smiled.

“Then try.”

A black symbol appeared beneath him.

The same symbol from the coin.

Kael's eyes widened.

“Teleportation.”

The hunter vanished.

But before disappearing, he left one final sentence.

“You've bought yourselves time.”

A pause.

“Not safety.”

Then he was gone.

Kael remained with his palm against the ancient structure.

The forced awakening percentage continued falling.

7%.

6%.

5%.

Then—

[Forced awakening cancelled.]

Kael exhaled.

The mountain became still.

For several seconds.

Then the System displayed another notification.

[Ancient Sealed Entity awareness increased.]

Kael froze.

[Current Awareness: 12%]

He stared at the number.

The entity hadn't awakened.

But it had noticed him.

The same thing that had happened when the territory network was restored.

The same presence that had been watching his growth.

Kael slowly withdrew his hand.

“So it knows me now.”

A voice echoed through the chamber.

Not from the hunter.

Not from the Guardian.

From the seal.

“Darven…”

Kael's blood ran cold.

The voice was quiet.

Almost curious.

“You finally came below.”

The seal pulsed.

Kael stepped back.

The voice continued.

“You are not like the others.”

A pause.

Then—

“That is why you may be useful.”

The voice disappeared.

Kael stood silently.

Then his System flashed.

[Hidden Objective updated.]

[Restore the Fourth Path.]

Progress: 1/4

[New Condition discovered:]

[Free the Fourth Guardian without destabilizing the Ancient Seal.]

Kael looked toward the staircase.

Above him, the Fourth Guardian remained chained.

Below him—

the ancient entity had awakened to his presence.

And somewhere outside the mountain—

the enemy who had orchestrated the attack was still moving.

Kael clenched his fist.

He had thought reaching Level 30 would begin the next stage of his growth.

He was wrong.

The real test wasn't becoming stronger.

It was learning how to repair something that had been broken for thousands of years—

without becoming trapped inside it himself.
