THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 52 — The Price of the Fourth Path

  • Next Chapter

Kael remained at the bottom of the chamber.

His palm was still pressed against the ancient sealing structure.

The last trace of black energy had disappeared.

The circular seal was stable.

For the moment.

But Kael could still feel the presence beyond it.

Quiet.

Watching.

Waiting.

He slowly removed his hand.

The System remained in front of him.

[Ancient Sealed Entity Awareness: 12%]

Kael stared at the number.

Twelve percent.

That was already far too much.

He didn't know what the percentage meant.

But he knew one thing.

He didn't want it reaching thirteen.

He stepped away from the seal.

The injured hunter was gone.

Only a small amount of blood remained on the stone.

Kael looked at it.

“Someone went through a lot of trouble to awaken that thing.”

He looked toward the staircase.

“And they're not finished.”

A tremor passed through the chamber.

Kael immediately raised PR-02.

The seal remained intact.

Nothing emerged.

But another System notification appeared.

[Ancient network disturbance detected.]

[Mountain Node Stability: 80%]

[Guardian connection: Severely unstable.]

Kael frowned.

The Fourth Guardian.

He turned and began climbing.

The Guardian was exactly where he had left it.

Its silver eyes immediately opened when Kael returned.

“You spoke to it.”

Kael stopped.

“You heard that?”

“I felt its attention.”

The Guardian looked toward the floor.

“That is worse.”

Kael approached.

“What exactly is its awareness?”

The Guardian remained silent for several seconds.

“Think of a creature asleep beneath a locked door.”

Kael listened.

“If its awareness is zero, it has no sense of the world.”

“And twelve?”

“It knows the world exists.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“What happens at one hundred?”

The Guardian's eyes met his.

“It wakes.”

Kael didn't like the answer.

“How long?”

“Long enough for that question to become irrelevant.”

Kael looked at the chains.

“Then we can't let the percentage rise.”

“No.”

“And we can't leave you trapped here.”

“No.”

Kael folded his arms.

“Then we have a problem.”

The Guardian gave a faint smile.

“You are finally understanding the Fourth Path.”

The Guardian lifted its hand.

A small projection appeared in the air.

Four points formed a pattern.

Three were green.

One was crimson.

“The original network had four authorities.”

Kael looked carefully.

“The three guardians.”

“Yes.”

“And the Darven.”

“Yes.”

The Guardian moved its finger.

The three green points connected to the mountain.

The crimson point connected directly to Kael.

“But these are not four separate powers.”

Kael studied the projection.

“They're four functions.”

The Guardian nodded.

“Foundation.”

The first point brightened.

“The Mountain Wyrm.”

“Stabilization.”

The second.

“The Crystal Behemoth.”

“Territory.”

The third.

“The Basilisk.”

Then—

the crimson point.

“Continuity.”

Kael frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The Darven does not supply the network with raw power.”

The Guardian looked at him.

“You give it something the others cannot.”

Kael waited.

“Correction.”

The projection changed.

Broken lines appeared.

“The network was created by humans. Guardians can maintain it. They cannot redesign it.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“You can maintain a broken system.”

“But you cannot repair a component that no longer belongs there.”

Kael slowly understood.

“That was the reason the missing guardian couldn't simply be replaced.”

“Yes.”

The Guardian looked down at its chains.

“The network kept trying to use me as a substitute.”

“And failed.”

“It never understood that a substitute isn't the same as continuity.”

Kael looked at his own hand.

“So my bloodline doesn't replace you.”

“No.”

“It repairs the connection that was supposed to exist.”

The Guardian nodded.

“Exactly.”

Kael looked at the chains again.

“Then why am I not already repairing it?”

The Guardian's expression darkened.

“Because you have not reached the place where the Fourth Path was broken.”

Kael immediately knew where the answer was.

The missing node near the mountain.

The one he had discovered after the Fang Ravager's death.

The connection had already been severed before he arrived.

Kael looked toward the Guardian.

“The broken node.”

“Yes.”

“If I restore it—”

“You will establish the Fourth Path.”

Kael paused.

“And free you?”

The Guardian didn't answer.

Kael frowned.

“Will it?”

“No.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“Why not?”

“Because I am not the missing component.”

The Guardian touched one of the chains.

“I became part of the system when the original component failed.”

“So even if the network is repaired…”

“I remain bound.”

Kael went silent.

He had expected a simple solution.

Repair the node.

Free the Guardian.

Restore the network.

But the real problem was deeper.

The Guardian had become an error that the network learned to depend on.

The network could be repaired—

but that didn't automatically undo thousands of years of accumulated structure.

Kael looked at the chains.

“Then I need to remove you from the network.”

The Guardian's eyes narrowed.

“Yes.”

“And if I disconnect you incorrectly?”

“The mountain loses a stabilizing component.”

“And the seal?”

The Guardian's expression became serious.

“If the timing is wrong…”

Kael finished the sentence.

“…the entity wakes further.”

Kael sat down beside the ancient structure.

He didn't rush.

He had prepared for powerful monsters.

He had prepared for Territory Lords.

Now he needed to prepare for a system.

He took out the three Territory Lord Cores.

The Blackthorn Core.

The Ironhide Core.

The Ashen Core.

He placed them in a line.

The Guardian stared at them.

“You killed three Lords.”

“Yes.”

“You kept their cores.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Kael looked up.

“Why?”

“Because each core contains a fragment of territorial authority.”

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“Can they replace the missing stabilizing load?”

“Temporarily.”

That was enough.

Kael immediately began thinking.

The Basilisk could maintain territory.

The Wyrm could stabilize the foundation.

The Crystal Behemoth could suppress excess mana.

The Darven bloodline could repair the network.

But the Fourth Guardian's removal would create a sudden gap.

Three Lord Cores could temporarily fill that gap.

Not permanently.

Not safely.

But long enough.

Kael looked at the cores.

“Then that's my preparation.”

The Guardian nodded.

“But there is another problem.”

Kael waited.

“You need to enter the network personally.”

“That doesn't sound too bad.”

“It is.”

The Guardian pointed toward the crimson projection.

“When you connect your bloodline to the Fourth Path, the network will try to identify what you are.”

Kael frowned.

“And?”

“If it considers you incomplete…”

The Guardian looked directly into his eyes.

“It will attempt to finish you.”

Kael's expression became serious.

“Finish me how?”

“By turning your body into the fourth component.”

Silence.

Kael looked at the chains.

So that was the real danger.

The system wasn't malicious.

It was following ancient rules.

A broken component had to be replaced.

If Kael connected incorrectly—

he could become another prisoner.

Another guardian.

Another living piece of the network.

He stood.

“Then I need to make sure it recognizes me as the user.”

The Guardian smiled.

“Now you're thinking like a Darven.”

Kael left the chamber with the three cores.

Before leaving, he turned back.

The Fourth Guardian was still chained.

Silver eyes watched him.

“How long can you hold the network?”

The Guardian closed its eyes.

“Not long.”

“How long?”

“Perhaps three days.”

Kael frowned.

“Only three?”

“The recent attacks accelerated the deterioration.”

Kael looked upward.

Three days.

That was not much.

The Guardian continued.

“Do not rush because of that.”

Kael paused.

“What?”

“If you repair the network incorrectly, three days will become three seconds.”

Kael nodded.

“Then I'll do it properly.”

He turned.

The Guardian called after him.

“Kael.”

He stopped.

“You asked how to free me.”

“Yes.”

“When the Fourth Path is restored…”

The Guardian looked down at the chains.

“…do not pull me out.”

Kael frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I must release myself.”

Kael understood.

The Guardian itself had to reject the role.

Kael could restore the proper component.

But the Guardian would have to sever its own connection.

Otherwise the network might simply attach it again.

Kael nodded.

“I understand.”

He climbed the stairs.

The moment Kael emerged from the underground passage—

he sensed danger.

He didn't need Metal Sense.

The forest was too quiet.

He immediately activated Darven Armament.

PR-02 rose.

AR-03V followed.

His katana appeared in his hand.

Then—

BOOM!

A large chunk of stone exploded beside him.

Kael jumped backward.

Three figures appeared among the trees.

Not the hunters from the chamber.

Different armor.

Different weapons.

The System activated.

[Threat Analysis.]

Target 1: Level 32 — Commander

Target 2: Level 34 — Commander

Target 3: Level 36 — Commander

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Three commanders.

They had been waiting.

The central figure stepped forward.

“You went below.”

Kael raised PR-02.

“You were waiting outside.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The leader looked toward the mountain.

“To see whether the Guardian accepted you.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“You know about the Fourth Path.”

“We know enough.”

The man raised a strange weapon.

It was not a firearm.

Not exactly.

It looked like a long metallic staff with several rotating rings.

Kael's Metal Sense detected something immediately.

Mana disruption.

The weapon wasn't designed to kill.

It was designed to sever connections.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“You're here to stop me from restoring the network.”

“Correct.”

The man rotated the weapon.

The rings began glowing black.

“And if necessary…”

He aimed it at Kael.

“…we'll sever your bloodline from it.”

Kael smiled faintly.

“That sounds painful.”

“It will be.”

Kael took one step forward.

“Good.”

The weapon activated.

A black pulse shot toward Kael.

He moved sideways.

The pulse struck the ground.

Nothing happened.

Then the metal around him suddenly stopped responding.

Kael's expression changed.

His Metal Control weakened.

Not completely.

But significantly.

The commander smiled.

“Severance Field.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

So this was their counter.

They had prepared specifically for Darven abilities.

The second commander attacked.

Kael raised his katana.

CLANG!

The enemy's weapon struck.

Kael was forced backward.

The third fired a projectile.

Kael twisted.

It passed him.

PR-02 tried to rise.

Nothing.

The Severance Field was interfering with his Armament Bond.

Kael immediately changed tactics.

He let PR-02 fall.

He stopped relying on remote weapons.

Then drew M-02 manually.

The first commander frowned.

“He adapted.”

Kael fired.

BANG!

The commander blocked.

Kael moved.

The second attacked.

Kael ducked.

The third attempted to flank him.

Kael struck the ground.

The metal beneath his feet answered weakly.

Enough.

A narrow spike rose.

The third commander jumped.

Kael used the opening.

He closed the distance.

His katana struck the opponent's weapon.

CLANG!

Another exchange.

Another.

Kael wasn't trying to overpower them.

He was fighting inside their rules.

The first commander activated the Severance Field again.

Kael watched the rings.

The field is directional.

The black energy radiated outward from the device.

But there was a dead angle behind the user.

Kael smiled.

He had found it.

He stepped backward.

Then ran directly toward them.

The commander expected an attack.

Kael jumped over the first attacker.

The second swung.

Kael twisted in midair.

He landed behind the Severance weapon.

The commander's eyes widened.

Kael slammed his katana into the device.

CLANG!

The outer ring cracked.

The field flickered.

Metal Control returned.

PR-02 instantly flew into Kael's hand.

The commander tried to retreat.

Too late.

BANG!

The rifle shot struck the weapon.

The device shattered.

The Severance Field disappeared.

Kael's three Armament Bonds returned.

His katana moved independently.

AR-03V rose.

PR-02 shifted.

The battle changed immediately.

The remaining commanders realized it.

One shouted:

“Fall back!”

Kael didn't chase immediately.

He studied them.

The two remaining enemies retreated toward the trees.

One of them looked back.

“Then we'll destroy the network from inside.”

Kael's expression changed.

They weren't retreating because they had lost.

They had another objective.

Kael turned toward the mountain.

The missing node.

The enemy intended to attack it directly.

He had to move.

Kael reached the broken node at sunset.

The old metal structure was almost completely buried.

The three Territory Lord Cores floated beside him.

He placed them around the node.

Then he drew his Darven katana.

The crimson bloodline energy spread across the ground.

The ancient structure awakened.

[Fourth Path restoration sequence initiated.]

Kael's breathing slowed.

[Three temporary stabilizers detected.]

[Blackthorn Authority.]

[Ironhide Authority.]

[Ashen Authority.]

[Darven Authority detected.]

Four energies appeared.

Three dark.

One crimson.

The damaged node began repairing itself.

Kael felt something enter his body.

A wave of pressure.

His knees nearly buckled.

The System flashed.

[Fourth Path attempting synchronization.]

Kael gritted his teeth.

The network pressed against his bloodline.

For a moment—

he felt his body becoming heavier.

Something was trying to anchor him.

The Guardian's warning echoed in his mind.

It will attempt to finish you.

Kael immediately pushed back.

“I am not your component.”

The crimson energy intensified.

The network resisted.

Kael's bloodline flared.

“I am the one who repairs you.”

The pressure increased.

His vision blurred.

Then—

[Darven Authority recognized.]

[Role classified: Administrator.]

Kael's eyes widened.

[Fourth Path synchronization successful.]

The node erupted in crimson light.

All four energies aligned.

The network extended outward.

One connection.

Then another.

Then another.

The System appeared.

[Fourth Path restored: 1/4.]

Kael stared.

Not complete.

But started.

Then another message appeared.

[Guardian transfer sequence available.]

Kael looked toward the mountain.

The Fourth Guardian's chains had begun glowing.

For the first time in thousands of years—

one of them loosened.

Kael smiled.

“We're getting you out.”

But the smile disappeared when another notification appeared.

[Ancient Seal Integrity: 79%.]

Kael froze.

The restoration had worked.

But the seal had fallen below eighty.

Something had changed.

Something had noticed.

And from deep beneath the mountain—

the ancient entity whispered again.

“Administrator.”

A pause.

Then—

“Come closer.”

Kael looked toward the mountain.

His hand tightened around the katana.

He didn't answer.

He simply stared at the darkness.

The ancient entity had given him a new name.

And Kael had the unpleasant feeling—

that the entity hadn't guessed.

It had remembered.
