THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 53 — The Guardian’s Release

  • Next Chapter

The mountain was silent.

Too silent.

Kael stood before the restored node, staring at the crimson lines spreading through the ancient metal.

The Fourth Path had accepted him.

Not as a component.

As an Administrator.

But the success had come with a cost.

[Fourth Path restored: 1/4.]

[Ancient Seal Integrity: 79%.]

Kael stared at the second notification.

“Seventy-nine…”

He had expected the network restoration to stabilize the seal.

Instead, the opposite had happened.

The seal had crossed below eighty.

The warning threshold.

The mountain trembled.

Not violently.

Almost like something below had shifted in its sleep.

Kael looked toward the peak.

The ancient entity had spoken to him.

Not through a projection.

Not through a memory.

Directly.

Administrator.

That word bothered him.

It meant the entity knew something about the old system.

Maybe more than the guardians did.

Kael turned back toward the node.

The three Territory Lord Cores continued floating around it.

Blackthorn.

Ironhide.

Ashen.

They were feeding temporary energy into the damaged network.

But Kael could already see their limits.

Hairline cracks had begun forming across their surfaces.

The cores were being consumed.

Kael frowned.

“They won't last.”

A voice answered from behind him.

“No.”

Kael turned.

The Verdant Horned Basilisk stood at the edge of the clearing.

The Territory Lord looked toward the three cores.

“They were never meant to.”

Kael narrowed his eyes.

“You knew this would happen?”

“I knew the network needed a bridge.”

“A bridge that burns itself away.”

“Yes.”

Kael looked back at the cores.

“So I have limited time.”

The Basilisk nodded.

“Very limited.”

“How much?”

The Basilisk was silent.

Then—

“Before the temporary stabilizers fail?”

A pause.

“Several hours.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“Then I need to finish the transfer.”

Kael returned to the mountain.

The Basilisk followed only as far as the outer chamber.

The deeper path recognized Kael and opened automatically.

He descended alone.

The Fourth Guardian was still chained.

But something had changed.

One of the chains around its left arm had become dim.

Its silver eyes opened as Kael entered.

“You restored the first connection.”

“Yes.”

“And the seal?”

“Seventy-nine percent.”

The Guardian's expression darkened.

“That is dangerous.”

“I know.”

“You should understand something before continuing.”

Kael stopped.

“The Fourth Path cannot be completed while I remain attached.”

Kael nodded.

“That is why we're transferring you.”

The Guardian looked at the three faintly glowing symbols on Kael's arm.

“The Territory Lord Cores?”

“Temporary stabilizers.”

The Guardian gave a faint smile.

“You have learned quickly.”

“I had good enemies.”

The Guardian almost laughed.

Then it became serious.

“The transfer will not be easy.”

Kael looked at the chains.

“What's the problem?”

“The network has recognized you.”

“I know.”

“No.”

The Guardian's voice became heavier.

“You don't.”

Kael waited.

“The network doesn't simply obey the Administrator.”

The Guardian raised its chained arm.

“It tests the Administrator.”

Kael frowned.

“With what?”

“Everything.”

The chamber suddenly changed.

The four walls began glowing.

Green.

Crimson.

Silver.

Black.

The chains around the Guardian tightened.

The three cores appeared in the air.

The System opened.

[Fourth Path Transfer Sequence initiated.]

[Current Administrator: Kael Darven.]

[Temporary Stabilizers: 3.]

[Guardian Status: Bound.]

[Transfer Requirement:]

[Administrator must maintain network stability while removing a legacy Guardian connection.]

Kael read the message twice.

“So I have to disconnect you while keeping the network alive.”

“Yes.”

“And if I fail?”

The Guardian looked at him.

“You will be bound in my place.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“How does the network decide?”

The Guardian pointed toward the center of the chamber.

A circular pattern appeared.

“There.”

Kael approached.

Four symbols appeared.

The three known guardians.

And the Darven.

The Guardian continued.

“When you sever my connection, the system will try to fill the empty position.”

“With me.”

“Yes.”

Kael placed his hand over the crimson symbol.

“So I need to tell it I'm not replacing you.”

The Guardian nodded.

“Exactly.”

Kael thought for a moment.

The System had already classified him as Administrator.

That should matter.

But the ancient system had existed long before the current System appeared.

His System could interpret the network.

It might not control it.

Kael needed another answer.

He looked at his Darven katana.

Then remembered the ancient memories.

The first Darven.

The original network.

The human handprints.

The fourth path.

His father had hidden the truth.

Perhaps the bloodline had been altered over generations.

Maybe that was why the network couldn't simply recognize modern Darven blood.

Kael placed the katana beside the central pattern.

The family crest touched the ancient metal.

The chamber reacted.

[Ancient Darven signature detected.]

Kael's eyes widened.

The sword wasn't merely an inherited weapon.

It carried the signature of the original bloodline.

That gave him an idea.

“Guardian.”

“Yes?”

“I need you to synchronize with my sword.”

The Guardian stared at him.

“That weapon…”

“You recognize it?”

“Yes.”

The Guardian's silver eyes narrowed.

“That is the blade carried by the first administrator.”

Kael froze.

Not his father.

Not an ancestor.

The first administrator.

The same man from the memory.

The one who had stood beside the original network.

Kael slowly lifted the sword.

“Then let's use the original signature.”

Kael placed the katana at the center of the formation.

The Guardian closed its eyes.

Green mana flowed from its body.

The chains began glowing.

One of them cracked.

CRACK.

Kael activated the Fourth Path.

Crimson energy traveled from his hand into the katana.

The sword answered.

Silver energy appeared next.

The three Territory Lord Cores began pulsing.

Blackthorn.

Ironhide.

Ashen.

Three dead Lords.

Now supporting the network they had once ruled.

The chamber shook.

[Temporary stabilization: 93%.]

Then—

92%.

91%.

Kael's eyes widened.

The stabilizers were already being consumed.

“Why is it dropping?”

The Guardian answered through gritted teeth.

“The transfer has begun.”

Another notification appeared.

[Legacy connection removal: 4%.]

Kael looked at the Guardian.

The chain around its arm was beginning to crack.

But the network reacted.

Green energy rushed toward Kael.

It wrapped around his legs.

Then his torso.

Kael immediately felt something attempting to enter his body.

His breathing became difficult.

[Fourth Path integration detected.]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“No.”

The energy tightened.

His body became heavier.

The ground beneath him cracked.

[Attempting Administrator completion.]

Kael gritted his teeth.

This was exactly what the Guardian had warned him about.

The system was trying to make him a living component.

Kael forced his mana outward.

“I'm not your component.”

The network tightened.

His knees almost touched the ground.

The Guardian shouted:

“Don't resist it directly!”

Kael looked up.

“What?”

“You are fighting the network.”

“Then what am I supposed to do?”

“Correct it.”

Kael froze.

Correct it.

Not overpower it.

Not reject it.

Correct it.

His Intelligence surged into action.

He stopped forcing his mana outward.

Instead, he touched the crimson pattern.

His bloodline.

His role.

His authority.

He spoke slowly.

“I am not the Fourth Guardian.”

The network paused.

“I am not a replacement.”

The pressure weakened slightly.

“I am the administrator of the Fourth Path.”

The crimson energy intensified.

The network responded.

[Role conflict detected.]

Kael continued.

“The guardian exists to maintain.”

His eyes moved toward the chained Guardian.

“The Administrator exists to repair.”

The chains shook.

“And the Darven exists to continue what was broken.”

Silence.

Then—

[Administrator role confirmed.]

The energy around Kael changed.

It stopped trying to bind him.

Instead, it began flowing through him.

Kael could suddenly perceive the entire network.

Not just the mountain.

Everything.

The Verdant Territory.

The Ashen Ridge.

The western territory.

The eastern territory.

The damaged nodes.

The guardians.

The seal.

For one terrifying moment—

Kael saw the entire structure beneath the forest.

And he understood how enormous it really was.

Four great routes extended from the mountain.

Three were green.

One was crimson.

The first green route connected to the Mountain Wyrm.

The second to the Crystal Behemoth.

The third to the Basilisk.

The crimson route should have connected directly to the Darven.

But it was broken.

Kael saw the break.

Not one break.

Four.

The original Fourth Path had been severed into four separate sections.

That was why the objective was 1/4.

He wasn't restoring one connection.

He was restoring the four sections of the Darven path.

Kael understood the larger problem.

The first section was the node he had just repaired.

Three remained.

One beneath the western territory.

One beneath the Ashen Ridge.

And one—

deep beneath the mountain.

The final one was connected directly to the ancient seal.

Kael's eyes widened.

“That one…”

The Guardian understood.

“You saw it.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know why we cannot restore it yet.”

“Because it touches the seal.”

The Guardian nodded.

“Repairing it too quickly may strengthen the network.”

Kael finished.

“But also increase the entity's awareness.”

“Yes.”

Kael looked at the last broken segment.

The ancient entity wasn't merely sealed by the network.

It was connected to the network's deepest layer.

Restoring the entire Fourth Path without understanding that layer could accidentally give the entity a new route outward.

Kael had to proceed carefully.

The transfer continued.

[Legacy connection removal: 61%.]

The chain around the Guardian's left arm cracked again.

CRACK.

The Guardian looked at Kael.

“Now.”

Kael nodded.

He reached through the network.

For the first time—

he could feel the Guardian's connection as a distinct thread.

He didn't break it.

He redirected it.

The thread moved from the Guardian toward the restored crimson path.

The network resisted.

Kael used the three Territory Lord Cores as anchors.

Blackthorn.

Ironhide.

Ashen.

Their remaining power stabilized the transition.

The Guardian's chains began breaking one after another.

CRACK.

CRACK.

CRACK.

The Guardian's body shook.

Green energy erupted from its armor.

The ancient chain around its chest was the last.

The Guardian looked at Kael.

“Now.”

Kael pulled.

The chain shattered.

BOOM!

Green mana exploded through the chamber.

The Guardian staggered forward.

For the first time in thousands of years—

it took a step that wasn't controlled by the network.

It looked at its own feet.

Then at its hands.

Then at Kael.

“I…”

Its voice trembled.

“I can move.”

Kael smiled.

“You're free.”

The Guardian took another step.

Then another.

It stopped.

Tears did not fall.

But its silver eyes changed.

Not because it was weak.

Because it had remembered what freedom felt like.

Then the System appeared.

[Guardian transfer complete.]

[Legacy Guardian connection removed.]

[Fourth Guardian status changed:]

Bound → Independent

Kael exhaled.

But another notification immediately replaced it.

[Temporary stabilizers remaining: 41%.]

Kael's smile disappeared.

The three Territory Lord Cores were almost consumed.

They had done their job.

But now he had another problem.

The network was stable.

The Guardian was free.

Yet the Fourth Path was only 1/4 restored.

Three sections remained.

And the temporary support would not last forever.

The Guardian walked toward Kael.

Without the chains, it looked very different.

Ancient armor.

A powerful frame.

Silver eyes.

But no longer a prisoner.

Kael checked its status.

[Verdant Fallen Guardian]

Level: 46

Grade: Lord

Potential: Overlord

Status: Independent

Guardian Authority: Restricted

Territory Synchronization: Partial

The Guardian looked at the status window.

“You can see my condition.”

“Yes.”

“Then you should know I cannot return to my original strength immediately.”

Kael nodded.

“You've been trapped for thousands of years.”

“And the network drained most of my core.”

Kael looked at the three remaining cores.

“Can you recover?”

“Eventually.”

“Good.”

The Guardian looked toward the ceiling.

“The next attack will come soon.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“You know who is coming?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

The Guardian smiled.

“Because the enemy knows you repaired the Fourth Path.”

A distant sound echoed through the mountain.

KLANG.

Kael stopped.

The Guardian looked toward the eastern tunnel.

Another sound.

KLANG.

The network reacted.

Kael opened his map.

Three red marks appeared.

One beneath the western territory.

One beneath Ashen Ridge.

One beneath the eastern forest.

His eyes narrowed.

All three were connected to the remaining sections of the Fourth Path.

The System displayed:

[Restoration Route identified.]

[Section II — Western Node]

[Section III — Ashen Node]

[Section IV — Deep Mountain Node]

Then—

[Warning.]

[Hostile interference detected at Section II.]

Kael looked at the Guardian.

“The next target is the western node.”

The Guardian nodded.

“That means they know the structure.”

Kael glanced toward the surface.

Then toward the mountain.

The ancient entity had not spoken again.

But its awareness remained.

12%.

Kael didn't know what the attackers wanted.

He didn't know who they served.

But now he had something he hadn't possessed before.

A living guardian who knew the ancient network.

And a bloodline that could finally interact with it properly.

Kael picked up his katana.

The crimson energy along its blade pulsed once.

“We're going west.”

The Guardian looked at him.

“To repair the next section?”

Kael shook his head.

“To find out who's cutting them.”

Far below—

the ancient sealed entity opened its eye.

It had felt the transfer.

It had felt the Fourth Guardian become free.

And for the first time in thousands of years—

the entity whispered a name it hadn't spoken in a very long time.

“Darven.”

Then—

“Continue.”
