Chapter 266: Chapter 266 The Escape

_Rowena’s POV_

The pain didn’t stop, but it changed. It stopped feeling like something breaking and started feeling like something healing. I could feel Kyra moving through my blood, chasing down the poison Kyle had put in me, burning it out piece by piece.

"Hold on," Kyra said. "This part’s going to sting."

"More than it already does?" I asked.

"Trust me, darling."

It actually stung, my veins felt like they were on fire, but it was a different fire than the poison had given me. That fire had been weak and slow, dragging me toward the floor. This one burned hot and fast, and with every pulse of it, I felt stronger instead of weaker.

My vision became clearer, everything in the room become clearer as if I could see even someone’s soul. It all snapped into focus. I could see every line of fear on Kyle’s face, every bead of sweat on his forehead.

Then my hearing came back clearer too. I could hear Kyle’s heartbeat, fast and uneven. I could hear his breath catching in his throat.

"Your eyes," Kyle said, backing up another step. "What’s wrong with your eyes?"

"Nothing’s wrong with them," I said. "They’re just not just mine anymore."

I could feel Kyra right behind my own thoughts, close enough that it didn’t feel like two of us at all. It felt like one person who had been split apart for months finally stitched back together.

"Get up," Kyra said. "Let’s finish this."

I pushed myself off the wall, and this time my legs held. Strength poured back into my arms, my back, my hands. The cut Kyle had given me on my forearm was already closing, the skin knitting itself shut in front of my eyes.

Kyle stared at it like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. "That’s not possible. Wounds of wolfless people don’t heal like that. Not that fast."

"She’s not wolfless anymore. Also, she is carrying royal blood. You should’ve done your research before you poisoned a Luna," Kyra sighed.

He lunged for the blade on the floor, but Kyra was faster now. She crossed the space between us before he even had his fingers around the handle, and she grabbed his wrist and twisted. He cried out and the blade dropped again, skittering across the floor.

"You don’t get to touch that again," She growled.

Kyra hit him and It felt good, better than I expected, my fist connecting with his jaw hard enough to snap his head sideways. He stumbled into the wall, and glass cracked behind him.

"You poisoned me," I said, hitting him again. "You tried to kill my baby."

"He’s not even yours to protect," Kyle spat, blood running from his split lip. "He’s a weapon. That’s all he’ll ever be to people like Alaric."

Something in me went cold at that. I grabbed the front of his shirt and slammed him back against the wall hard.

"Say that again," I said. "I dare you."

He didn’t say it again, he just stared at me, breathing hard, blood dripping from his mouth onto the floor.

“Let’s finish him,” Kyra said. “You know what he’s done. Ezekiel. Brielle. He doesn’t deserve to walk out of here.”

I wanted to. Goddess, I wanted to. My hand tightened around his collar, and I felt Kyra’s strength gathering behind my next move, ready to end this the way it probably should have ended.

But then I felt something else, a small pull in my stomach, like a reminder of exactly why I couldn’t afford to lose myself in this moment.

"No," I said, more to myself than to Kyra. "Not like this."

“Rowena...”

"If I kill him here, alone, with no one as a witness, it becomes my word against a corpse. And I need to get help. I need to get to a doctor, I need this poison completely gone, not just slowed down." I let go of his shirt and he slid down the wall to the floor. "I’m not risking my son for the satisfaction of watching him die."

Kyle coughed, blood spattering across his chin. "You’re going to regret this," he said. "Letting me live."

"Maybe," I said. "But it won’t be tonight."

I turned and ran. The fun house door that had been locked for hours now gave easily under Kyra’s strength as I shoved through it. The air hit my face and I felt comfort again, my lungs opened.

Behind me, I heard Kyle struggling to his feet, cursing, his voice echoing strangely around me. He looked like a demon in distress.

I didn’t look back and just ran for the treeline at the end of the abandoned fairground, my bare feet hitting ground since I lost my shoes somewhere inside.

“Keep going,” Kyra urged. “I’ve got the poison mostly handled, but you’re still weak. Don’t stop until we’re far enough.”

"I’m not stopping," I said, pushing leaves away from my face, although some branches were catching at my arms and hair. "Not until I get back to Alaric."

Behind me, I heard Kyle running after me and screaming like a deranged man.

"How is this possible," he screamed, to no one in particular. "Your wolf was supposed to be dead!”

I ignored him and continued sprinting deeper into the forest. When I get to safe spot, Kyra would help me open my mindlink to contact anyone for help again.

For now, I needed to get as far away as possible from Kyle. I’ve learnt my lesson never to trust anyone again, if I had a gut feeling about someone’s behavior or how they’re moving, I would make sure to act on it and not just ignore it.

Kyle was an example.

The moment my mind link opens, I’m telling Alaric about our son.

“Yes, do that. He would be happy. But I think I’d prefer you see him face to face. Find a place and hide, I’ll open the mind link now and you can contact someone for help first.”
