Selene’s POV

"I have something to tell you, William." My mouth trembled as I tried to find the words. How was I supposed to deliver this, hide certain things, and still not sound like a liar?

"What is it, love?" he asked.

"I went to a spiritualist. Before you say anything, I did it for us. I wanted to know where we stood and what we should do going forward. I didn’t think you’d agree, so I didn’t tell you. I’m sorry."

William looked at me, then let out a sharp breath. "You shouldn’t have done that. You’re carrying a baby inside you. If you had told me, I would have agreed, but you would have gone with someone, not alone."

Hearing that, I was glad I had gone alone. I didn’t need anyone beside me to hear what I heard at Madam Josephine’s place. Some words were meant for one set of ears only, and I was still carrying them like stones in my chest.

"I’m sorry. It won’t happen again," I said, and he pulled me into his arms and held me tight.

"How’s the baby?" he asked against my hair.

"I can feel it, at least." We both laughed, and for a moment the weight lifted.

"What did the spiritualist say to you?"

"She spoke about what we need to stand strong as a territory. Togetherness. She said she doesn’t know if war will still erupt in Morvaine, but if it does, togetherness is our shield and our weapon against the enemy."

William listened closely, and I watched understanding settle on his face. "If that’s what she told you, then I believe her. She’s right. It’s the same thing Lucian came here the other day to achieve, but his mouth ran ahead of him and we couldn’t find common ground. He started a fight."

My chest tightened at the name, but I pushed the feeling down. "Let’s not talk about Lucian. He isn’t the territory, he’s only a part of it. Thousands of people are involved in this. We have to forget sentiments and do this once and for all, together."

William rested his hand on his chin. He was thinking, and I knew something wise was about to come out of him.

"Here’s what we’ll do, Selene. We call the Alphas and the elders together again. We plan this as one, so we know about the threat before it even arrives. If we all share one pack mind, we can take them down instantly. We’re strong enough to do it."

"But Lucian won’t agree to come. He’s too proud."

"That’s why we won’t hold it here. We’ll hold it in Bloodmoon. He’ll have no choice but to meet us there."

"That’s smart." I smiled in spite of myself. "How do you think so clearly?"

"Because I’m with you, Selene." He didn’t look away.

I couldn’t look away either.

Oh. Whatever was coming next was coming, and there was no way I could have stopped it, or wanted to.

We leaned into each other at the same moment and the kiss came slow and deep. Our mouths moved together like they had been starved, and I knew I needed it more than I had realized. With all the trouble of the past weeks and months, I hadn’t even noticed how long it had been since I felt romantic, how long since my body had been shown any love at all.

Only one thought lingered at the edge of my mind before sleep took me: tomorrow, I would have to face Lucian.
