The Mirror Master
Chapter 259: Wife, Save Me
Seeing things were going south, Lu Bai quickly pulled out the Mountain Demon Hat, put it on, and prepared to slip away in the chaos.
In a situation like this, he couldn’t worry about anyone else. He would be lucky just to escape with his life.
The lids of the Bronze Coffins flew open, soaring into the air and arranging themselves in a bizarre formation, hovering at the mouth of the mountaintop cave.
OM!
The next moment, brilliant rays of light erupted from the ground around the great tomb. They shot skyward, connecting to the coffin lids at the cave’s entrance.
The space between the coffin lids was instantly filled with a thick Corpse Qi, blotting out the sky and sealing the entire entrance shut!
Lu Bai beat his wings and shot forward, but just as he reached the cave entrance, the Corpse Qi above blocked his path.
A Tier Four Flying Bird tried to force its way out, ramming headfirst into the Corpse Qi. As Lu Bai watched, the bird was quickly consumed by the Corpse Qi. The light in its eyes faded, and its life force was extinguished.
Lu Bai was secretly horrified.
A Tier Four Demon Beast’s combat power was comparable to that of a Nascent Soul True Monarch.
‘Even an expert at the Nascent Soul Realm couldn’t withstand the Corpse Qi above!’
“Fellow cultivators, be careful! This is the Corpse Refining Array! Once you’re assimilated by the Corpse Qi, you’ll become a mindless puppet, controlled by the Corpse Refining Sect!”
As soon as the man finished speaking, the Tier Four Flying Bird fell out of the Corpse Qi, only to startlingly resume its movements in midair.
Only now, its eyes were dull and gray, its body reeked of Corpse Qi, and it launched an attack on the surrounding cultivators. It had clearly been turned into one of the Corpse Refining Sect’s Combat Corpses.
“Fellow cultivators! Forget whatever grievances we’ve had in the past! We have to work together and break this array as quickly as possible!”
“That’s right. Inside this Corpse Refining Array, both our Blood Qi and Magical Power are suppressed. The longer we linger, the slimmer our chances of getting out of here alive.”
“The Corpse Refining Sect obviously came prepared. They want to wipe us all out in one fell swoop.”
The cultivators shouted in midair.
Although some tried to organize the group and unite their strength, faced with the assault of numerous Combat Corpses, the cultivators had already descended into chaos, their ranks broken, each fighting for themselves.
In addition to the hundreds of Copper Corpses released from the massive stone coffins, from all corners of the great tomb below, hordes of Green Jiangshi and Black Jiangshi surged forth, pouncing on the crowd. The sight of the dense, dark mass was enough to make one’s skin crawl!
This wasn’t a great tomb.
It was a pit of corpses, the very lair of the Corpse Refining Sect!
Things would be manageable if they could just find the Corpse Refining Sect cultivator controlling the Combat Corpses.
But faced with these innumerable Combat Corpses, the cultivators could barely fend for themselves. They were stretched to their limits just trying to stay alive; they had no time or energy to search for the hidden Corpse Refining Sect cultivator.
In the air and on the ground, cultivators and countless Combat Corpses were locked in a chaotic melee.
Lu Bai hid in a corner, his expression grim.
‘With the Mountain Demon Hat, I can only avoid the senses of Golden Core Realm experts.’
‘Some of the Green and Black Jiangshi can’t see me.’
‘But I’ve already noticed a few of the Copper Corpses chasing after the Nascent Soul True Monarchs glancing my way, intentionally or not. They’ve clearly sensed something!’
‘I have to find a way to escape.’
Lu Bai swallowed. ‘My own strength definitely isn’t enough.’
After a moment of deliberation, Lu Bai took the Immortal Vine out of the Ancient Mirror. At the same time, he activated his Blood Qi and unleashed the Nether Candle Secret Technique!
‘Last time, I wanted to use the Ghost Bride to eliminate a major enemy outside Fujiao Manor.’
‘Unfortunately, the incident with the Immortal Vine interrupted the summoning.’
‘I’ll try again this time.’
‘At the end of the day, Bai Chuchu harbors a deep-seated hatred for the Corpse Refining Sect.’
‘If I can actually summon Bai Chuchu, I’ll try to sweet-talk her and play it by ear.’
‘If that fails, my only other option is to summon Yu Daoxuan.’
In a corner of the mountain peak, a small candle began to burn silently. It gave off no warmth, only an encroaching chill.
Last time, the summoning had only gotten halfway done, and the Ghost Bride’s silhouette was already taking shape.
This time, the moment the Nether Candle appeared, the Ghost Bride’s form materialized along with it!
As the Nether Candle burned down, the Ghost Bride’s form grew clearer. Lu Bai stared into the empty space before him, his heart thumping wildly.
He couldn’t say for sure what the consequences of summoning the Ghost Bride would be.
When the Nether Candle burned out, a lovely young woman in a phoenix crown and wedding veil appeared before Lu Bai. Her face was fair and beautiful, her lips a rosy crimson, and she was dressed in a festive Red Robe.
However, a very conspicuous sword wound marred her chest.
After Bai Chuchu appeared, a flicker of confusion crossed her eyes. It was as if she couldn’t see the chaos around them; her gaze fell directly on the invisible Lu Bai.
After a moment, a light slowly returned to Bai Chuchu’s eyes. Her face broke into a wide smile as she called out softly, “Husband!”
Seeing that Bai Chuchu held no hostility toward him and still remembered him, Lu Bai couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
“Did you call for me, Husband, to fulfill our promise?”
Bai Chuchu blinked her large, watery eyes, asking with great seriousness and a hint of expectation.
“Well…”
Lu Bai broke out in a cold sweat.
‘Last time, to get away quickly, I just said whatever and promised Bai Chuchu we’d consummate our marriage the next time we met.’
‘This Ghost Bride has too good of a memory.’
‘This is no time for that! Escaping is the priority.’
Lu Bai swallowed and tried to talk his way out of it. “Miss, you…”
“Hm?”
Bai Chuchu frowned slightly, tilting her head to look at Lu Bai with a hurt and confused expression.
Seeing the smile vanish from her face, Lu Bai panicked and quickly changed his tune. “My dear, look around you. The ones who murdered your parents were these very cultivators from the Corpse Refining Sect.”
Bai Chuchu said, “The ones who killed my parents are already dead.”
Lu Bai grew anxious and pressed, “But they’re all part of the same group!”
Bai Chuchu: “Oh.”
Lu Bai: “…”
‘What is that “Oh” supposed to mean?’
‘Is that it?’
Lu Bai was dumbfounded. He asked tentatively, “My dear, can you get me out of here?”
“Of course.”
Bai Chuchu nodded. “It’s very simple.”
Lu Bai said, “Then let’s get out of here first.”
But Bai Chuchu didn’t move, standing rooted to the spot as if lost in thought.
“Hey?”
Lu Bai couldn’t help but call out to her.
‘This is no time to be spacing out!’
Bai Chuchu seemed to sense something and asked, “There are a few treasures down below. Should we grab them while we’re here?”
“We can do that?”
Lu Bai’s eyes lit up. He quickly asked, “Where are the treasures?”
“The tomb chambers up here are all fakes.”
Bai Chuchu said, “The real tomb is beneath these palaces. However, the entrance is too well hidden to be found. I can only sense that the best few treasures are in one of the chambers inside.”
Lu Bai was taken aback. “Then how do we get there?”
Bai Chuchu smiled faintly, extended a delicate finger, and tapped Lu Bai on the chest.
“The Ancient Mirror?”
Lu Bai instantly understood what she meant.
Before Lu Bai could ask, Bai Chuchu added, “But there’s an old fellow guarding that tomb chamber. You’ll need to be quick, Husband.”
Lu Bai read between the lines and asked, “Is it dangerous?”
“Don’t worry, I’m here.”
Bai Chuchu gave Lu Bai a sweet smile and reached out to take his hand.
Lu Bai’s first instinct was to pull his hand away.
But on second thought, he steeled himself and let her small hand take his.
Her palm was cool to the touch, soft and smooth.
If he didn’t know her origins, Lu Bai would never have imagined that such a beautiful, charming young woman could be such a terrifying entity—a malevolent Ghost Soul!
