The other side of Reincarnation
Part one hundred forty — War Genesis
"Did you," Nyxara said again, slower this time, something genuinely cold settling behind her usual playful composure, "just say War Genesis?"
Vahlreth didn't turn back to answer immediately. The silence stretched long enough that even his own posture seemed to register the weight of what he'd let slip.
"You know the name," he said, finally.
"I know the name," Nyxara confirmed, flat. "I also know it's not a name anyone with any sense speaks aloud carelessly. That's not a war. That's an era. The last time anything close to that happened, entire races were erased from this world's memory before anyone properly understood what was actually occurring."
War Genesis. The conflict that supposedly ended before recorded history properly began――the one even primordial demons rarely speak of directly, the one that reshaped the world's races into whatever survived it.
"You and your brother wanted the power to restart that," Nyxara said, disbelief and genuine alarm both threading through her voice now. "Deliberately. On purpose."
"The old order is fading," Vahlreth said, something almost defensive entering his tone. "The rules that used to hold everything in place――they're already cracking, whether any of us like it or not. Better to control what comes next than let it simply happen to us."
"That's not control," Nyxara said. "That's arrogance wearing control's clothing. You'd burn the entire world down to rebuild it in whatever shape you and your brother happened to prefer."
"Wouldn't you, given the chance?" Vahlreth asked, something almost curious beneath the challenge.
"No," she said, simple and absolute. "I've lived long enough to know exactly how little anyone actually improves the world by tearing it apart first. You're older than that mistake too, Vahlreth. You should know better."
He was quiet for a long moment, something unreadable behind his composed expression.
"Perhaps," he said, finally. "Doesn't change what's already been set in motion, though."
"What does that mean?" Nyxara asked, sharp.
He didn't answer.
He simply turned and stepped back into whatever passage had brought him there in the first place, Absolute Void beginning to loosen its grip on the world the instant he crossed its threshold.
He's not telling me everything. There's more to this than a single failed attempt to steal a golden seed.
Nyxara stood there a long moment, alone, turning over everything she'd just learned――the golden seed's true purpose, War Genesis, whatever "already set in motion" actually meant――before finally, reluctantly, letting it go for now.
There would be time to properly investigate.
Right now, there was a cocoon still needing protection, and a boy inside it who deserved better than an ambush he'd never even known was coming.
Absolute Void released the moment Vahlreth's presence fully withdrew, the world snapping back into motion all at once――Enzo and Ivy both stumbling slightly as their own frozen bodies suddenly answered to their will again, Eris gasping like she'd been holding her breath the entire time without realizing it.
"What――" Eris started, disoriented, immediately reaching for the cocoon beside her. "What just happened? I couldn't move. I couldn't do anything――"
"A True Dragon," Nyxara said, quiet, still processing everything herself. "Vahlreth. He came for Kai while he was vulnerable."
Ivy's expression went carefully, dangerously still.
"He touched the cocoon?"
"He tried," Nyxara confirmed. "Broke through your Vespera barrier, and the Null Barrier both, before I stopped him."
If she hadn't been here. If she'd arrived even a few seconds later――
Eris's hands found the cocoon's surface, checking, desperate, needing physical confirmation that it was still intact, still glowing steady with the same slow, patient light it had carried all week.
"He's fine," Ivy said, gentle, reading the same desperate need in Eris that she clearly felt herself. "The Null Barrier held. Whatever he attempted, it didn't actually reach Kai."
"This time," Enzo said, grim, already thinking several steps ahead. "We need better protection than a barrier alone, going forward. If a True Dragon can bend the entirety of Horizoncrest into stillness without effort――"
"I'll remain," Nyxara said, simple, cutting off the rest of his sentence. "Personally. Until he wakes. I should have been more careful about leaving even briefly, given how close this actually came."
She's genuinely shaken, Eris thought, watching something rare cross the primordial demon's usually unbothered composure. That's not nothing, coming from her.
"What did he actually want?" Eris asked, once the immediate fear had settled enough to ask properly. "Beyond just killing him."
Nyxara considered how much to actually share, weighing something clearly heavier than she was fully ready to explain.
"Something about a golden seed," she said, carefully vague. "And a war neither of us should ever need to worry about actually happening. I'll explain properly, once Kai's awake to hear it alongside the rest of you. Some things deserve to be told once, together, rather than pieced apart secondhand."
Nobody pushed further, though the weight of her evasion settled uneasily over all of them regardless.
Whatever it is, it's bad enough that even she doesn't want to say it twice.
They settled back into their vigil, closer together now, more alert, the cocoon's steady glow the only genuinely calm thing left in the room.
