The other side of Reincarnation
Part one hundred thirty nine — The Seed
Kai felt exhaustion settle over him almost immediately.
A heaviness that had nothing to do with the fight itself...
And everything to do with something considerably larger already beginning underneath his own skin.
<"Demon Lord seed has been obtained.">
Anti-Subconsciousness's voice echoed through his mind.
Demon Lord seed?
Nyxara, watching with open fascination, smiled.
"This is interesting. Seems you're full of surprises, Kai."
<"Evolution into a Demon Lord has begun.">
Kai's aura began bursting outward.
It reshaped itself in ways he couldn't consciously direct, his own eyes beginning to glow with something he didn't recognize as his own light.
Ivy watched, amazed.
Ace, beside her, went entirely still.
A new Demon Lord, being born right in front of them.
<"Evolution into Demon Lord complete.">
Anti-Subconsciousness continued.
<"Notice: evolution into True Demon Lord will now begin.">
Symbols began floating around Kai in mid-air――spellwork written in characters that had no proper reason to exist, forming and dissolving faster than anyone watching could properly track.
<"Evolution into True Demon Lord successful.">
<"Notice: commencing fusion of High Hybrid core and True Demon Lord core.">
<"Fusion complete.">
<"Evolution into Draconic Demon has begun.">
Something like an egg formed around Kai.
Then a cocoon.
It glowed with layered energy, symbols floating around it like a seal awaiting a birth still weeks from arriving.
Even Nyxara felt it fully now.
Kai's presence...
Already reshaping itself into something she hadn't quite encountered before.
She smiled, genuinely delighted.
"You really are something else, aren't you, Kai."
The cocoon pulsed once.
Like a heartbeat.
<"Notice.">
Anti-Subconsciousness's voice reached everyone connected to Kai at once, across whatever distance separated them.
<"The soul known as Kai has begun its evolution into a Draconic Demon.">
<"Estimated time for completion: one hundred sixty-eight hours. Ten thousand and eighty minutes. Six hundred four thousand, eight hundred seconds.">
Back at Horizoncrest, Eris and the others felt the message arrive.
Relief washed through the fear that had gripped them since the fighting first began.
He was alive.
At least.
Whatever this actually meant.
Nyxara and Ace began the journey home.
Ivy raised her own barrier skill――Vespera, Evening Star――an impenetrable shield wrapped carefully around the cocoon.
Then she carried it home through a mist gate she opened herself.
When they arrived, everyone was already waiting.
Eris and Elaine rushed forward the moment they saw the cocoon.
Kai was unconscious inside it.
"This is very important," Enzo said quietly, his expression grave.
"Exactly," Nyxara agreed.
Elaine used Authority of Genesis to raise a proper building around the site within the hour.
Ivy carefully placed the cocoon inside a chamber built specifically to hold it.
Everyone gathered close.
Watching.
Waiting.
The light within the cocoon pulsed steadily and slowly.
"Protect him with your lives while he's like this," Nyxara told them.
Every one of them agreed without hesitation.
"If he wakes and asks," she added, "tell him I've gone to settle something with the rest of the Demon Lords."
Her expression hardened slightly.
"Belial's seat is empty now."
She looked toward the cocoon.
"Kai will be the one taking it."
A pause.
"I intend to make sure the rest of them understand that properly."
Every day since went by, on its surface, like any other day.
But the destruction of Myrath and the death of Belial rang loudly across the continent, and the world took notice properly for the first time.
A delegation from the Kingdom of Aurengard, alongside two members of the Guild of Principalities, arrived to inspect Horizoncrest directly during that same week.
They found Enzo and Ivy first.
Their shock was immediate.
"A sin-emarked demon and a wind dragon," one of them said, disbelieving. "Here?"
"I am no wind dragon," Enzo said, mildly offended. "Correct your words."
"Then what are you?"
"An Elder Dragon," he said. "And she's a Demon Lord, I believe."
Ivy simply looked at the speaker and walked away.
"Clueless dragon," she muttered, entirely unbothered.
Elaine handled the delegation properly, alongside the growing staff now helping her manage Horizoncrest's expanding needs.
Eris and Ace stayed close to the cocoon the entire week.
Eris refused to leave its side at all.
She waited.
Patiently.
In a way that cost her visibly more than she let anyone see.
The visitors from Aurengard identified themselves――Cassian Vell, Liora Vane, and Theo Marchett――alongside the Guild's own Brasco Sunder and Mira Tollman.
Even a handful of nobles from Roshan arrived, sent along by the widow's own growing network.
Some sought to judge Horizoncrest's leadership.
Some hoped for friendly relations.
Others were simply chasing trade.
That same week, Elaine's people began potion production properly for the first time.
And Borga's dwarves turned out weapons and armor of a quality that quickly drew serious interest.
The widow, ever resourceful, handled the advertising and sales herself.
In Ashford, King Alaric weighed whether to visit Horizoncrest personally.
Sophia, present at the council alongside High Priestess Selwyn, made her own case plainly――that Kai was, at his core, an ordinary person who wanted nothing to do with war.
The king eventually agreed to travel there himself.
Sophia and Selwyn would accompany him.
Word reached the Kingdom of Thraex, which dealt heavily in spirit summoning.
The Onmyō Order took notice as well.
Its leader, a man named Kazuhiko Ono, originally of Japan himself, smiled upon hearing the name Kobayashi.
"Well..."
He spoke quietly, to no one in particular.
"This is unexpected."
Nyxara, meanwhile, summoned the Demon Lords once more.
Though this time, the strongest among them was notably absent.
She skipped any grand speech and went straight to the point, same as always.
"Strange, seeing you actually acknowledge someone as a true Demon Lord," one of the female Demon Lords observed.
"Is there something so special about this boy you always mention?" another asked.
"Yes," Nyxara said simply.
"So much more."
Her own younger sister offered no objection.
"I have no issue with your decision, sister. And since Belial's dead, someone needs to fill the seat regardless."
They came to an agreement without their strongest member present at all.
Kai would take Belial's place among them.
On the final day Kai was meant to wake...
Something happened that nobody had prepared for.
One of the two remaining True Dragons came to kill him.
Exactly while he remained most vulnerable.
His name was Vahlreth.
The Void Dragon.
He arrived in human form, appearing above Horizoncrest without warning.
He didn't approach the ground directly.
He simply hung there.
And in that single instant, everywhere beneath him froze under the sheer weight of his aura.
Before anyone below could process a single thought, Enzo and Ivy had already closed the distance.
They appeared at his sides so quickly that Vahlreth himself hadn't registered their arrival.
Ivy's hand had shaped into an aura-blade, killing intent absolute.
Enzo's own dwarf-forged weapon radiated beam-laser energy.
Vahlreth deflected both attacks without visible effort.
He raised a hand.
The entirety of Horizoncrest fell into something called Absolute Void――a space where no rules existed except his own.
Everyone froze.
Enzo.
Ivy.
Eris, still at the cocoon's side.
Ace, close beside her.
All of them were caught, motionless, inside a reality that had simply stopped obeying anything but Vahlreth's own will.
He descended slowly.
Unhurried.
Walking toward the cocoon with calm, deliberate purpose.
When his hand reached for it, Ivy's Vespera barrier threw his arm back.
He actually paused.
Genuinely surprised that anything could function inside his own Absolute Void at all.
"No matter," he said.
"I'll simply break it."
He reached again.
This time, his own skill――Absolute Control――rewrote the barrier's own rules, disabling it entirely.
His hand touched the cocoon.
<"Notice: interference with evolution detected.">
Anti-Subconsciousness spoke.
<"Activating Null Barrier.">
Vahlreth stepped back, studying the new barrier with genuine curiosity.
He attempted the same Absolute Control that had just dismantled Ivy's own defense.
It didn't work.
Null resisted.
Unmoved by rules that assumed it could be rewritten at all.
"I should have killed you that day," he said quietly, something final in his words.
"Playtime is over."
A blade formed in his palm.
He drove it forward, breaking through the Null Barrier's resistance, aiming directly at the cocoon itself.
He never finished the strike.
Nyxara appeared behind him without warning.
Her own blade was already resting against his throat――close enough that a single inch of movement would mean instant death.
"Break my toy," she said, her aura screaming with barely restrained fury, "and I'll end you."
Vahlreth went very still.
His mind raced through the impossible question of how she'd entered his Absolute Void at all, given his own supposedly total control over it.
Slowly, he lowered the blade.
"It's been a long time, No.5," he said.
She didn't answer that directly.
She simply removed the blade from his throat.
"Leave."
"Won't you kill me?" he asked.
"I have no interest in you," she said. "The only one I'm interested in is Kai, and he has a score to settle with you himself. I won't ruin that fun, even if killing you right now would be easy enough."
Vahlreth remained silent for a moment.
Before he departed, Nyxara asked him one final question.
"Tell me――why did you kill your younger sister? Kai's mother?"
"She fell in love with a demon," Vahlreth said flatly. "Mated with him. Gave birth to that abomination. Death wasn't even enough to properly answer for that."
"Both you and your brother used that as an excuse," Nyxara said. "Because you were jealous of her power."
Her eyes narrowed.
"Wasn't your younger sister the Chaos Dragon――the God of Chaos and Destruction, if I recall correctly? Far stronger than either of you, and your elder brother besides."
Vahlreth's expression darkened.
"You're right."
He paused.
"Maybe it was jealousy. Both of us planned to kill her, take her core, and use it to obtain the golden seed of evolution ourselves."
His gaze shifted toward the cocoon.
"She ended up using half her core to seal No.8 eighty years ago."
"Ah..."
Something clicked into place for Nyxara.
"So that's what happened to him. I'd nearly forgotten."
She tilted her head slightly.
"You could have used the other half for the seed, though."
"The other half wasn't in her anymore," Vahlreth said.
"She'd already placed it inside the boy you're protecting."
His voice remained completely flat.
"That's why we came for him――to extract the core properly."
"I suspected as much," Nyxara said. "I could feel his mother's presence in him, even without knowing why."
"Not surprising," Vahlreth replied.
"She was the only one who could ever fight against you on equal footing."
Nyxara almost laughed at that.
"Why kill his father, then?"
Her expression shifted slightly.
"I recall he was always fighting in the demon realm, protecting his family――hardly ever home."
"We simply wanted them both gone," Vahlreth said, turning to leave.
He paused once more.
"The reason we wanted the golden seed in the first place..."
His voice became quieter.
"It was to have the power to restart War Genesis all over again."
Nyxara's expression went completely flat.
She turned toward him.
"Did you――"
