The other side of Reincarnation

Part one hundred thirty-eight — What Belial Underestimated

  • Next Chapter

 They appeared ten meters apart.

 Belial didn't move at first.

 He simply smiled.

 Too wide.

 Too practiced.

The smile of someone who had already won a hundred fights before they had properly started.

 Kai said nothing.

His hand found the katana's grip――dwarf-forged, fused with Anti-Subconsciousness's own precision. A blade that didn't cut so much as unmake the reason things stayed whole.

 Belial's opening lunge was casual.

 A test swipe.

The kind of attack you'd throw to see whether a child flinched.

 Kai didn't flinch.

The katana met the tooth-blade and produced only silence――the Lost World stealing even the sound of impact, leaving just two edges pressed together, neither yielding.

 "You're not running," Belial observed.

Something curious cut through his boredom.

 Kai didn't answer.

 He was already moving.

Each strike came faster than the last, each angle sharper.

Kai's body adapted in real time to every pattern Belial's casual defense revealed.

By the fifth exchange, Belial's tooth-blade scraped Kai's shoulder.

Kai's own Null shockwave answered instantly.

A crescent of negation sliced through the space where Belial's head had been a heartbeat earlier.

 Belial actually blinked.

"Oh. You're not just an error."

 His smile widened.

 "You're a growing error."

Still, he hadn't taken Kai seriously.

Kai gave him no room to correct that mistake at his own leisure, forcing increasingly genuine effort out of every block.

Then Belial's patience finally broke――not from losing, but from impatience.

 His sternum split open.

 A second mouth emerged.

 Wet.

 Hungry.

A third opened at his elbow.

Eyes bloomed across his shoulders, all of them fixed on Kai with the same expression.

 A restaurant finally seated...

 Disappointed by the menu.

 He devoured space itself now.

Belial lunged with jaws wider than his own body, the Lost World distorting around him like fabric being pulled down a drain.

 Each bite stole something small.

 A breath of air.

 A memory of warmth.

Color itself briefly drained from Kai's vision.

 Kai didn't retreat.

 He swung.

Three Null shockwaves erupted in rapid succession, each wider than the last.

They sliced through Belial's gluttony, unmaking the mouths before they could close.

 His speed kept climbing.

 Not gradually.

 Exponentially.

His feet barely touched the ground, the blade silencing the very air it passed through.

 One strike cracked Belial's tooth-blade.

 Another spread that crack wider.

 For the first time...

 Belial felt genuine pressure.

 He screamed.

 Not from pain.

 From release.

His body began unraveling like a flower blooming in reverse, gluttony itself pouring out of him and consuming the ambient magic of the Lost World.

The obsidian dissolved wherever he came near.

 Too many limbs.

 Too many mouths.

A crown of teeth where his head had been.

His regeneration surged, demon lord instincts making death a mere suggestion.

His attacks came faster now――faster than Kai's adaptation had yet caught up to.

A swing erupted into a devouring mouth that swallowed the ground where Kai had stood a moment earlier, leaving a hole not in the earth...

 But in reality itself.

 Kai fell back.

For the first time, he was genuinely on the defensive.

Belial's too-many-throated laughter echoed through a realm that had never found anything loud enough to properly hold before.

"That's it! Run! Adapt! You're so delicious when you're struggling!"

But Kai's eyes never stopped tracking.

 Every movement.

 Every excess.

Every microsecond Belial spent celebrating his own power instead of finishing the fight.

 Kai vanished.

 Not teleportation.

 Null compressing space itself.

He appeared directly behind Belial without warning or sound.

A spear of compressed negation erupted from his palm, catching Belial through the spine and driving him down into the dissolving glass.

 Then――detonation.

 Not fire.

 Not force.

 Negation itself.

It released in a chain reaction that swallowed light, sound, and meaning.

A mushroom cloud shaped from absence rather than smoke rose higher than mountains.

The Lost World shuddered under the weight of it.

When the absence finally cleared, Belial rose anyway.

 Damaged.

 Half his mouths sealed shut.

 One limb useless.

 Yet he was laughing.

 Wetly.

 Genuinely.

"You... you really are taking this seriously, aren't you?"

Belial spread his remaining limbs in a grotesque shrug.

"Just give up. Let me absorb you. This world doesn't need an error."

 Kai's voice came quiet.

 Not weak.

 Controlled.

"If the world doesn't need an error..."

He gripped the katana tighter, the dwarf-forged metal humming against his palm.

"...I have people who need an error like me."

 A pause.

The Lost World seemed to hold its breath.

"Three of them were killed because of you."

 Belial's mouths twisted.

 Not with sympathy.

 With amusement.

 He chuckled, wet and ugly.

"Oh? I see. No wonder that silly dragon and that stupid demon got themselves killed."

 Kai's expression didn't change.

 Not immediately.

 Then it did.

 "Who are you referring to?"

 Belial laughed.

All his mouths laughed at once, the sound forced through the Lost World's own reluctant acoustics by sheer ugliness alone.

 "Don't you know?"

 He grinned.

"I mean your parents, of course."

 Silence.

 Not the arena's usual silence.

 Real silence.

The kind that happens when the universe itself holds still.

 Nyxara, watching from above, sighed.

 She didn't speak loudly.

 She didn't need to.

"Belial... if I were you, I wouldn't have said that."

Something stirred deep inside Kai's own mind.

Somewhere words hadn't reached in a long while.

 Anti-Subconsciousness spoke.

 Kai's aura didn't flare.

 It erupted.

A pillar of absolute negation punched through the Lost World's frozen twilight, through its absent sky, through Nyxara's own design itself.

 The obsidian cracked.

 The space between moments fractured.

 His eyes were gone.

Replaced by Null light――not closed, simply absent, seeing by unmaking whatever they looked at.

He was lost in something beyond rage.

 Not anger.

 Erasure.

The emotion itself was consumed by the power moving through him.

 He didn't think.

 Didn't plan.

 Didn't adapt.

 He was adaptation now.

 Pure function.

 Null given purpose.

Belial, arrogant to the last, lunged anyway.

 Tooth-blade raised.

 Gluttony screaming from every mouth.

Certain his regeneration and demon lord instincts would outlast whatever this actually was.

He moved in a split second.

 Kai's katana moved in none.

The blade passed clean through Belial's throat.

 No resistance.

 No sound.

The Null-forged edge, fueled by two percent of something that shouldn't exist at all, simply unmade the concept of his neck remaining attached.

 His head separated.

The expression on it――all the stolen expressions flickering through it at once――was surprise.

 Not fear.

Just the look of someone who had ordered a feast...

 And been served oblivion instead.

 Kai didn't stop.

 Absorption activated.

 Not the controlled technique.

 Pure instinct now.

 The katana drank Belial's gluttony.

 His regeneration.

 His Demon Lord benefits.

Everything that had ever made him himself.

All of it was pulled into the void where Kai's rage still burned.

The hunger that had never once ended...

 Ended.

Belial's body unraveled into data without meaning, into the same nothing Kai had always carried within him.

 The Lost World stopped vibrating.

 Silence returned.

 Real silence.

The kind that follows when something loud finally, finally stops.

Nyxara circled him slowly, inspecting the damage to her own world.

The absence where Belial had been.

The boy who had just killed a Demon Lord with a temper tantrum given shape.

"Belial always did talk too much."

 She stopped.

 Tilted her head.

Something genuinely impressed cut through her usual playfulness.

"But you... you're going to be interesting to watch."

 Kai didn't respond.

His eyes were clearing slowly, the rage draining away and leaving something hard and quiet underneath.

He looked down at his katana.

 Still humming.

Still hungry in its own way.

 Then he slid it home.
