Chapter 530 -331: Longlong Crosses the Sea, With No Special Powers (Part 2)
“I’m very good at communicating. When my flight needed to communicate with other dragons, I was always the one in charge.”
“Oh?” Elsa had finally heard something useful. “So you mean you have contact with other dragon flights?”
“No, but I know the locations of many flights.”
Elsa jotted this down.
“Anything else?”
“In my flight, I was always responsible for taking care of the juvenile dragons. I even helped incubate their eggs.”
‘So he’s a den dad.’
After dutifully recording this, Elsa thought for a moment. He could probably continue looking after the young ones.
These little dragons needed a dragon to take care of them, after all.
“Alright, next.”
The next one was a Blue Dragon. Even facing Doudou, he didn’t lower his head completely.
“Name, race, age.”
“I am the noble Blue Dragon, Freckle the Desert Tyrant Who Cannot Be Looked Upon, and I am 88 years old!”
Elsa was completely stunned. ‘What the hell? He’s 88? A Blue Dragon who isn’t even an adult yet, so why is he so full of himself?’
She turned to ask Doudou, “What’s his deal?”
Doudou didn’t even look up. “It’s a minor issue. The blue ones are always like this. Just ignore it.”
“And the origin of this ‘Desert Tyrant’ title is?”
“I am destined to be the Desert Tyrant!”
‘Got it. A self-proclaimed title.’
“So what would happen if I were to look directly at you?”
It wasn’t hard to see that the Blue Dragon hadn’t expected Elsa to be so blunt. The corner of his mouth twitched slightly.
“I shall permit you to gaze upon my noble countenance, and you shall be spared the tyrant’s wrath!”
Elsa really hadn’t expected this Blue Dragon to be so quick on his feet.
“Special skills?”
“I am omnipotent!”
“Then why don’t you go challenge Zog to a one-on-one duel? If you win, this whole territory is yours.”
Elsa showed no mercy to the delusional Blue Dragon.
The “Tyrant’s” expression visibly twitched. “I… I…”
The self-proclaimed socialite Green Dragon hurried to smooth things over. “Where we’re from, he was mainly in charge of ambushes during hunts. He means no harm, absolutely no harm.”
‘Hunting,’ Elsa scratched her head. ‘Completely useless here.’
‘But if he’s not all there, maybe we can make use of that.’
She suddenly had a brilliant idea.
They could have this Blue Dragon learn the common tongue. He wouldn’t need to be fluent; just knowing a few lines would be enough to cast him in the city’s “Devils” grand play.
They could give the currently weaker faction in the plot a powerful Blue Dragon reinforcement.
With his personality, he wouldn’t need any acting lessons. He’d be playing himself—a pure, type-cast, punchable villain. Turning him into comic relief later on shouldn’t be too difficult either.
Elsa felt like a genius. How else could she have come up with a work assignment for such a difficult case?
After more than an hour, only one White Dragon’s information was left to be recorded.
Elsa stretched her neck. This job was mentally exhausting.
This group of dragons had an appallingly low level of culture. It would be difficult to even put them in a Factory. They might be strong, but using heavy machinery was still more convenient.
The few Metal Dragons were slightly better off. They knew a bit more and had some understanding of Magic. A few could be sent to the research institute—not as researchers, but because several project teams were eager to have dragons cooperate in testing the effects of Magic.
As test subjects, basically.
A few other dragons were assigned to join the city’s stage plays. If one dragon could appear on stage, so could several.
There was another one with delicate features who was sent to Huan. The Shadow of Evil he was filming needed a dragon. They had originally planned to use special effects, but since a real dragon was available, it would be cheaper.
The remaining adults and sub-adults who were responsible for Hunting in the flight were assigned to the patrol teams. A dragon’s senses and ability to repel Magical Beasts were perfectly suited for teams operating in the wilderness.
As for the last one, the White Dragon.
Elsa never had a good impression of White Dragons. Although she had never met one, Zog had a whole arsenal of White Dragon jokes and would mock them whenever he had the chance. She didn’t know if he’d been traumatized by a White Dragon in his youth or something.
In Zog’s descriptions, the image of a White Dragon was simple.
To put it nicely.
Innocent.
To put it bluntly.
A big, dumb idiot.
“The whiter the scales, the lower the intelligence,” or so Zog said.
This led Elsa to now feel that the White Dragon in front of her had eyes full of “wisdom.”
“Name.”
“White Dragon!”
“I’m asking what you’re called.”
“White Dragon!”
“Then let me ask you, what’s your race?”
“…” The White Dragon tilted its head. “Dragon!”
‘He’s got his logic straight, at least.’
“Age?”
“Don’t know.”
Alright, Elsa now admitted that Zog wasn’t intentionally slandering White Dragons.
“What can you do?”
“Eat!”
“Eating is not a special skill!”
“And carry food!”
“Huh?”
The Green Dragon quickly came up to explain. “He’s responsible for carrying all the food we’ve saved up.”
“How does he carry it?”
“On his back.”
“How heavy?”
“Very heavy, anyway.”
Elsa propped her chin on her hand. ‘Seems pretty useless.’ Nowadays, they used trains and ships to move cargo. How much could one White Dragon, who looked like a young adult at most, possibly carry?
“Can he do anything else?”
“Don’t worry, this color probably can’t do anything else.” Zog’s voice suddenly came from behind her.
“Boss.”
“How’s the data collection coming along?”
“See for yourself.” Elsa handed over all the information she had gathered.
Zog flipped through it. The assignments were quite reasonable.
It was more or less what he had expected. Aside from their racial instincts, they barely knew how to do anything else.
It couldn’t be helped. The vast majority of dragons were just this kind of creature. The rare few like Furin, who had a passion for Magic, wouldn’t have ended up in this state; they were all hidden away in settlements of other races.
“So just this white doofus is left?”
“Yes, just him.”
“Aiya…” Zog had a headache too. “So what is it that you can do?”
“Haa—” The White Dragon let out a low growl.
“Whoa, scary. Look at the big dragon puffing out his chest.”
Elsa was baffled. ‘What on earth is Zog talking about?’
“How about this,” Zog finally made a decision. “Send him to the construction site to haul raw materials. Use him as a truck. He should be more agile than the current ones.”
The trucks currently being developed by Benz were not yet reliable, so their use wasn’t widespread.
The main method used at the construction sites to move raw materials was by relying on Treasure Chest Monsters.
They would have the Treasure Chest Monsters swallow the goods at the station or port, then spit them out at the construction site.
It had the same vibe as transporting data by loading up a truck full of hard drives.
Due to the limited number of Treasure Chest Monsters, transport capacity was quite tight. They even had to resort to using ox- and horse-drawn carts.
One more White Dragon probably wouldn’t solve the problem, but he could haul more than an ox.
In the end, they would still have to rely on the research institute.
And so, just like that, the job assignment phase for the refugee dragons officially came to an end.
It was a bit miserable, but at least jobs were guaranteed.
Before starting their new jobs, they all took a bath first. They really stank.
Then, they were forced to learn the common tongue and how to read. They were still young dragons; they couldn’t be illiterate for their entire lives.
The next day, each dragon headed to where they were needed.
***
At a construction site on the west side of the city.
The foreman stared up at the White Dragon, which was several times his height.
“This is our new coworker?” he asked, extremely uncertain.
“The higher-ups said he’s here to haul cargo. They even gave us a translator that can handle Dragon Language.”
“Haul cargo? He’s not going to bite anyone, is he?”
“Probably not,” said the person next to him. “Anyway, if he bites, it’ll probably be over in one gulp. It likely won’t even hurt.”
The foreman punched his shoulder. “Watch your mouth!”
Then he looked back at the White Dragon. “Since the higher-ups gave the order, why don’t we have him try hauling something?”
No sooner said than done. The foreman gathered a group of men and tied a large amount of cargo onto the White Dragon’s back.
They kept piling it on until there was no more room, but the White Dragon didn’t seem to react.
They had no idea how much he could actually carry.
The foreman turned on the translator. There was a note attached to it, which read: “If he doesn’t work, tell him there’s food after he’s done.”
The foreman cleared his throat.
“Ahem, this stuff… you, pull to the station. We, together, load onto train, then come back. Understand?”
The White Dragon tilted its head.
“Uh, when you’re done… there’s food to eat.”
The White Dragon’s eyes lit up, and it took off running.
“Wait! Wait for us! We still have to unload it!”
More than ten minutes later, at the train station.
Several workers climbed off the White Dragon’s back, their hearts still pounding with fear.
That was too thrilling.
They collapsed on the ground, gasping for air.
“Un… un… unload.”
“I… I’m out of strength.”
“Me too.”
“We were too fast. We’re early. This isn’t the train for our cargo.”
“Alright then, let’s wait.”
The train in front of them whistled a few times, then slowly started to move. The workers were squatting on the ground, resting. However, to their astonished eyes, the White Dragon started to move.
“Hey, hey, the dragon’s running away!”
“I see it. I’m not blind.”
“What do we do?”
“What do you mean, ‘what do we do’? You gonna stop him?”
“No, I mean… does it look like he’s chasing the train to you?”
“Looks like it. You think he only remembered that he has to load the cargo onto a train…?”
