Chapter 531: Dragon Express
Chapter 531 -332: Dragon Express
This was the White Dragon’s first job in his entire draconic life.
After the Green Dragon’s repeated explanations yesterday, he finally understood what this “job” thing was all about.
It was a lot like hunting.
The only difference was that hunting got you food directly, while a job got you food after you finished the work.
Either way, work was very important.
Because no food meant an empty, hungry stomach.
In the White Dragon’s simple mind, he had already designated ‘work’ as a top priority.
No matter how difficult it was, he had to complete it.
So when he arrived at the construction site, a small Human used a strange machine that could speak Dragon Language to explain his task: he needed to carry a pile of things onto a train. At that moment, he decided he would follow Zog for the rest of his life.
‘This job is way too easy!’
He was used to carrying things on his back for the other dragons in his flight, so he was quite skilled at it.
As for what that “train” thing was, he had no idea, but the mission must be completed!
To show off his abilities, he carried the cargo and sprinted to the station with the workers.
He couldn’t fly while carrying so much, but it didn’t matter. He was just as fast without flying.
If he hadn’t needed someone to show him the way, he could have been even faster.
At the station, the White Dragon saw the thing they called a train—a series of metal carriages linked together.
He now had a certain fear of Human things. You could never tell what they were for just by looking at them.
It was just like the weapons of those Human Adventurers. They were so small, yet how could they be so powerful?
‘The Dragon Race makes more sense,’ he thought. ‘Bigger is stronger.’
After staring at the train for half a minute, the White Dragon roughly understood that it must be something used for hauling cargo.
It did the same job he did.
He immediately felt a sense of kinship with the metal train.
But how was he supposed to move the cargo onto the train? The little people who had climbed off his back were babbling in a language he couldn’t understand.
He watched as the locomotive spewed thick white smoke and slowly began to accelerate.
“Cargo… train… leaving… job… food!” the White Dragon used all his expressive ability to try and alert the workers to the situation.
He didn’t know that another train would come. All he could do was panic. The anatomy of the Dragon Race didn’t allow him to unload the cargo himself.
The train moved further and further away, and it felt as if his meal was disappearing with it.
Meanwhile, the worker beside him had only just taken out the translator.
‘It’s too late.’
The White Dragon’s “brilliant” mind spun furiously as he made a simple deduction.
‘The goal is to put the cargo on the train, let the train carry it away to some place… so isn’t it the same if I just follow it and deliver the cargo myself?’
And so, the future urban legend of Deepwater City—the White Dragon Who Chased the Train—was born.
Using a very strange posture, the White Dragon ran while flapping his wings diagonally backward, steadily keeping pace behind the train.
This terrified the train conductor.
“What do you mean there’s a Dragon behind the train?” the conductor asked in disbelief upon hearing the report from the rear car.
“There’s a Dragon! A white one, and it’s carrying a lot of stuff on its back.”
The conductor poked his head out the window and could just make out a white figure trailing far behind them.
“Are any of the city’s Dragons assigned to the railway?”
“No.”
“Then what is this Dragon doing!”
“I don’t know!”
“Damn it!” The conductor slapped his forehead, starting to panic. Who knew if that Dragon was dangerous? “Speed up! As fast as you can go!”
Meanwhile, at the Deepwater City Lord’s Mansion.
Zog received two urgent reports.
One was from the construction site, saying the White Dragon assigned to them had run off after a train.
The other was from the railway, reporting that a White Dragon was trailing a freight train dispatched this morning. Its purpose was unknown, and they were requesting assistance.
Zog finished reading both reports and set them on his desk.
‘Why?’
He didn’t understand.
The White Dragon was a bit simple, sure, but what on earth was he trying to achieve by chasing a train?
That train’s destination was the Northern Domain. The entire journey was six hours with no stops in between, and it had probably covered less than a tenth of the distance by now.
Every train was equipped with a public phone for handling emergencies.
Zog got the number for that train and dialed.
“This is Zog,” he said, getting straight to the point.
“Thank goodness, Mr. Zog! There’s a White Dragon following our train right now!”
“I know. Is he just following you? No other actions?”
“None. We’ve been keeping a close eye on him.”
“How about you go to the rear of the train, put me on speaker, and I’ll ask him what’s going on.”
“Uh, well…” The conductor hesitated. Getting close to a Dragon was just too dangerous.
“You can have someone else do it. One Gold Coin.”
Tempted by the money, there was always someone brave enough.
A young lad, holding the phone, trembled as he made his way to the rear of the train and put it on speaker.
“This is Zog. What are you doing?” Zog asked in Dragon Language.
Hearing the familiar language, though he didn’t know where it was coming from, the White Dragon answered, “I’m working.”
“What job?”
Zog was certain Elsa hadn’t assigned any Dragon a job as strange as chasing a train.
“Cargo… put on train… train ran away… I chase!”
Hearing the reply, Zog could already guess what had happened. The dragon had most likely gotten the wrong train. It fit the White Dragon’s character perfectly.
However, Zog quickly noticed something else. This White Dragon was chasing a train while carrying a heavy load, yet he wasn’t even out of breath. His breathing was steady as he answered the question.
‘That doesn’t make sense.’
Dragons weren’t a species skilled at long-distance running. As a Dragon himself, Zog was well aware of this.
They were excellent at short bursts of speed, but for any significant distance, they had to fly.
And for a Dragon to take flight, it normally required a great deal of Magic Power. After flying, they would need to replenish that massive expenditure.
