The Smiling Death

Chapter 569: You Could Try Getting....

  • Next Chapter

Amon remained silent for a long while. The revelation about his class still lingered heavily in his mind. Eventually, however, he seemed to give up on thinking about it.

With a tired sigh, he dropped back onto Scarlett’s lap and buried his face against her thighs.

"Why is this happening to me...?" He questioned to himself.

Scarlett looked down at him. Amon’s muffled voice continued.

"All I’m trying to do is become strong and live a happy life. I don’t have some grand ambition. I don’t want to conquer the world, become an emperor, or rule over everyone." He’s dream was simple.

He turned his face slightly, resting his cheek against her lap.

"I just want a carefree, entertaining life."

His expression became miserable.

"So why does everything keep getting more chaotic?"

Scarlett’s fingers returned to his hair, gently stroking his head.

"There’s not much we can do about that."

She spoke calmly.

"We don’t have complete control over what happens to us. Sometimes fate simply takes us somewhere we never intended to go."

"Yeah..."

Amon sighed.

"Fate is a bitch."

Scarlett’s eyebrow twitched.

"If I ever meet her, I’ll spank her."

Smack!

Scarlett lightly struck the back of his head.

"Ouch!"

Amon immediately looked up at her.

"What was that for?!"

"Don’t say things like that."

"Let me rant first!"

Scarlett sighed.

"Fine. Rant as much as you want."

Then her eyes narrowed. "But do it without being a pervert."

"Hmm..."

Amon buried his face against her lap again. For a moment, he said nothing. "It seems my dream is going to be much harder to achieve than I expected."

Scarlett looked down at him curiously. "Your dream?"

"Yes."

"What dream?" She asked curiously.

Amon lifted his head enough to stare at her incredulously. "Didn’t I literally just tell you?"

"No." She did, but once again wanted to hear in detail.

He decided to tell his goal once again. "My ultimate goal in life!"

Scarlett raised an eyebrow.

Amon proudly declared, "To become strong enough that nobody can bother me, live an entertaining and carefree life... Do whatever I want."

He paused dramatically.

"...and have a huge family!"

Scarlett blinked. "A huge family?"

"Exactly."

Her expression became thoughtful. "And how exactly are you planning to achieve that?"

Then a teasing smile appeared on her lips. "By having lots of children with me?"

Amon’s confident expression immediately cracked. A faint blush appeared on his cheeks.

"Well..."

He looked away.

"Yes."

Scarlett’s smile widened. Amon coughed.

"And..."

"And?"

"If you allow it..."

Amon cautiously looked back at her.

"...I could also have lots of wives and then lots of children—OW! OW! OW!"

Scarlett grabbed his ear and twisted it.

"I was joking!"

Amon immediately surrendered.

"Scarlett! I was joking!"

"Really?" She asked strictly.

"Yes!"

"You were completely joking?"

"Absolutely!"

She twisted his ear a little more.

"OW! Yes! Completely!"

Only then did Scarlett release him. Amon immediately rubbed his reddened ear.

"You turn into violent woman out of nowhere..."

"What did you say?" She raised her brow.

"Beautiful woman."

Scarlett stared at him suspiciously before eventually letting it go.

"Don’t joke about things like that."

Amon rested his head on her lap again.

"Okay, okay."

Scarlett resumed running her fingers through his hair.

"Although..."

Amon’s eyes opened.

"Hm?"

Scarlett looked toward the distant gardens. "I’m from a high-ranking noble family. So the idea of a man having multiple wives isn’t exactly shocking to me."

Amon’s head immediately rose from her lap.

"Oh?"

Scarlett already regretted speaking.

"So you’re actually okay with the idea?"

"That’s not what I said."

"But you just—"

Scarlett pressed a finger against his forehead and pushed his face away.

"Among high-ranking nobles, multiple marriages usually happen for political reasons."

She began explaining before Amon could get any strange ideas.

"A noble might marry someone to strengthen an alliance between two houses, secure territory, settle political disputes, or preserve certain bloodlines."

Scarlett narrowed her eyes at him.

"You’re not even a noble."

Amon nodded.

"True."

"And you have absolutely no political reason to marry multiple women."

"Also true." Amon nodded.

"So don’t use noble customs as an excuse for your fantasies."

"Fair enough." Amon obediently settled back onto her lap.

Scarlett continued gently stroking his hair. A comfortable silence returned between them. Then Scarlett’s hand suddenly stopped. She seemed to be thinking about something.

Amon noticed. "What?"

"What?Nothing."

"That definitely wasn’t nothing." Amon really heard someone crazy just now.

Scarlett remained quiet for several seconds. Then, strangely, she spoke in a casual voice.

"Though..."

"Hm?"

Her fingers resumed moving through his hair.

"...you could try getting Seraphina."

Amon froze completely. His black eyes stared blankly ahead.

"..."

For a while, his mind refused to process what he’d just heard. Did he heard that correctly? His Scarlett, actually told him to get Seraphina.

Then he slowly lifted his head from Scarlett’s lap. He looked at her. Scarlett looked back at him calmly.

Amon blinked. Then multiple times

"...What?"

"You heard me."

"No, I don’t think I did." Amon sat upright. He still thought, that he misheard.

"Say that again." So he asked once again.

Scarlett’s amethyst eyes remained perfectly calm. "I said..."

She paused.

"...you could try getting Seraphina." She said like it was not a big problem. Like the jealousy she showed to him few minutes ago never existed.

Amon stared at her as though she’d suddenly started speaking an ancient forgotten language. His mouth opened. Then closed. Then opened again.

Nothing came out. He’s brain started to work faster than ever. He used all brain cells and came to a conclusion.

Finally, "Who are you?"

Scarlett frowned.

"What?"

Amon pointed at her with genuine suspicion.

"What did you do to my Scarlett?"

This was one of the greatest plot twist in Amon’s whole life.

---

Meanwhile, back at Arcadia Academy.

Inside the girls’ dormitory, the evening was unusually quiet.

In one of the rooms, a beautiful young woman lay lazily across her bed.

Seraphina’s long golden-blonde hair spread across the mattress like strands of silk. She wore loose, comfortable clothes, though even the baggy fabric couldn’t completely hide her naturally curvaceous figure.

Her golden eyes were fixed on the small plush doll she held in one hand.

It was a soft doll of a young man with black hair and eyes. It was none other than Amon.

Seraphina stared silently at the doll.

"Amon..."

His name escaped her lips almost unconsciously. And with it came the memories.

Alaric’s sword descending toward her.

At that moment, Seraphina had been completely exhausted. Her body had refused to move. Her vision had been fading, and she had known that she wouldn’t be able to avoid the attack.

Then Amon had appeared. He had thrown himself between them without hesitation.

She could still remember the horrible sound of the sword piercing through his body. The warmth of his blood splattering across her face. And his back standing between her and certain death.

Ba-dump.

Seraphina’s heart suddenly beat harder. Her fingers tightened around the doll.

She pulled it against herself and hugged it against her soft chest tightly.

"Sigh..."

She closed her eyes.

"What’s happening to me?"

She genuinely didn’t understand.

Or perhaps she was simply afraid to understand. She had always felt something toward Amon. In the beginning, it had been simple friendship.

Amon was strange, shameless, unpredictable, and sometimes incredibly annoying. Yet being around him was fun.

She could speak freely with him. Laugh with him. Train with him. She cared about him deeply. She liked him.

Seraphina had always known that much. But she had convinced herself it was because Amon was her good friend.

That explanation had once seemed perfectly reasonable.

Now? She wasn’t so sure anymore. Her mind wandered back to the Demon Kingdom. She remembered walking beside Amon through the capital.

She remembered holding his hand. At the time, she’d tried not to think too deeply about it. Yet she still remembered the warmth of his fingers around hers.

She remembered how strangely fast her heart had beaten.

And then there was that conversation. The possibility of marrying him had somehow come up.

And Seraphina had admitted that. She didn’t dislike the idea. Her cheeks slowly became warm.

"Why did I even say that...?"

She buried half her face against the Amon doll. Yet she knew the answer wasn’t as simple as embarrassment. Because even now the thought didn’t feel unpleasant.

Ba-dump.

Her heartbeat quickened again. It was strange. Not because she was afraid, tired or nervous. This was different.

What she felt whenever Amon came unusually close to her was completely different. It was good and painfully confusing.

After the incident with Alaric, those feelings had only become stronger. Seeing Amon nearly die while protecting her had terrified her more than she wanted to admit. For those few moments she forgot about herself and only wanted Amon to be okay.

The thought of losing him had made something inside her feel as though it were being torn apart.

Seraphina slowly opened her golden eyes. Then another image entered her mind.

Bright red hair, amethyst eyes, she was Scarlett.

Seraphina’s expression subtly changed. She remembered seeing Scarlett beside Amon.

The way they held hands. The way Amon’s entire expression brightened whenever Scarlett appeared.

And she remembered accidentally seeing them kissing them lewdy.

Her cheeks immediately turned red at the memory. But beneath the embarrassment was something else.

Something unpleasant. Whenever Scarlett became affectionate with Amon, she felt this uncomfortable feeling.

She didn’t hate Scarlett. In fact, Scarlett had saved both her and Amon. Seraphina was genuinely grateful to her.

And yet whenever she saw her with Amon. That uncomfortable feeling returned. It wasn’t like the warmth she experienced around Amon.
