The Smiling Death
Chapter 624: Saving Someone (2)
Amon watched the two men approach. ’Well, this is getting troublesome. The people would woke up by sound soon which is good but that Roman name guy is running away. At this rate they will succeed.’
He jumped backward, creating some distance between himself and his opponents. Before landing, he hurled his hatchet toward Shane once more.
The weapon spun violently through the air, forcing the injured swordsman to adjust his stance and prepare to deflect it.
Meanwhile, Amon reached into his storage ring and retrieved a communication pager. He quickly activated it and contacted Arnold.
The call connected moments later. "Amon?" Arnold’s voice came through the device.
"Come here immediately." Without waiting for a response, Amon ended the call and returned the pager to his storage ring.
Then, with his eyes fixed on the two enemies before him, he pushed off the ground.
While Shane and Cleric kept him occupied, Amon quietly extended his shadow across the ground.
The dark mass moved like a living creature, stretching farther and farther until it began pursuing Roman, who was fleeing toward the woodland on the outskirts of the village with the unconscious girl in his arms.
Amon’s lips curled into a faint smirk. ’Time for the real show.’
Something was already stirring within his body when he contacted Arnold.
He suddenly dashed forward, lowered his center of gravity, and bent his knees before launching himself into the air with explosive force.
Cleric reacted immediately.
Pulling his flame-covered spear back over his shoulder, he took aim at Amon and prepared to hurl it at the airborne target who was dark face man.
Meanwhile, Shane had managed to deflect the hatchet. The weapon struck the ground with a heavy clang, but instead of immediately attacking again, the injured swordsman stared at Amon in confusion.
"What the hell is he trying to do?" Shane wondered.
Amon’s body continued rising at an astonishing speed.
Then, something extraordinary happened.
Blood seeped from his back, gathering behind his shoulders before rapidly spreading outward. The crimson liquid expanded and took shape, forming two enormous wings that stretched from his back.
At almost the same moment, his hatchet spun off the ground and returned to his left hand, guided by his will.
The remaining shadows surged upward, wrapping around both blood-red wings. Darkness spread over their surfaces, reinforcing them until they became solid and rigid, their black and crimson colors blending into a sinister sight.
The entire transformation took only a few seconds.
Amon had been practicing this technique for months. Although it still consumed a considerable amount of mana for blood Manipulation and concentration that hurt brain for shadow and darkness, he had finally learned to execute it without hesitation.
His wings spread wide. Then they flapped.
BOOM!
A powerful gust swept across the battlefield as Amon shot higher into the air.
Cleric released his attack, hurling the flaming spear toward him. However, the weapon passed harmlessly beneath Amon’s feet.
For a moment, both men could only stare.
"H-He’s flying?!" Shane exclaimed in disbelief.
Cleric was equally stunned. He had never expected his opponent to possess such an ability.
But Amon had no intention of giving them time to recover from their shock.
With another powerful flap of his wings, he accelerated toward Roman.
From above, his eyes quickly located the fleeing man. Roman was running along the outer edge of the village, desperately trying to reach the woodland while carrying the unconscious girl.
Unfortunately for him, Amon had already prepared a surprise.
The shadow that had been pursuing Roman along the ground suddenly surged forward, overtaking him. It spread across the earth before erupting into enormous, jagged spikes that blocked his path.
Roman skidded to a halt. "What the hell are those?!"
He stared at the towering spikes of darkness barring his escape. That brief moment of hesitation was all Amon needed.
Still flying through the air, Amon drew his right arm back and hurled his hatchet with all his strength.
The weapon spun violently, tearing through the air as it hurtled toward Roman.
CRUNCH!
"ARRRGHHHH!"
The hatchet struck Roman squarely in the back, its force sending him stumbling forward. The unconscious girl slipped from his arms and fell toward the ground.
Roman staggered, a scream of agony escaping his throat.
But before he could even process what had happened, a dark silhouette descended from the sky.
Amon folded his wings slightly, then angled them downward. Blood-red and black feathers or rather, the hardened extensions of blood and shadow cut through the air as he accelerated toward his target.
Black smoke streamed behind him, leaving a dark trail in his wake. For Roman, it was as though a dark meteor had suddenly fallen from the heavens.
He turned around and froze.
A figure with his face completely concealed beneath a mass of darkness was hurtling toward him. Two enormous wings, black as night and streaked with crimson, stretched from the figure’s back.
Roman felt a chill crawl down his spine.
Fear seized his heart.
He desperately tried to summon a weapon from his storage ring, hoping to defend himself against the approaching monster.
But he was already too late.
Shadows erupted from the ground and coiled around both his wrists, holding them firmly in place.
"W-Wait! Argh!"
Roman struggled desperately, but the shadowy restraints only tightened.
Amon was already upon him.
With his hatchet still embedded in Roman’s back, Amon gripped the sword in his other hand and swung it in a swift, merciless arc.
Roman’s eyes widened. The blade passed through his neck before he could utter another word.
Thud.
His head struck the ground. His headless body collapsed, and blood splattered across the earth.
Amon’s wings spread wide as he slowed his descent, the black smoke surrounding him gradually dissipating.
The girl lay nearby, seemingly unharmed. Amon’s gaze shifted toward her.
’Good. At least I managed to catch up before that bastard could take her any farther.’
He had dealt with Roman and two were coming from behind.
