The Trash Guide Awakens: The Youngest General's Hidden Wife
Chapter 77: The True King
Rhaevia’s entire body went rigid as the voice echoed through her mind. The words continued vibrating in her consciousness long after the ancient voice fell silent.
Raevor’s hand remained firmly against her shoulder, his palm radiating steady warmth. His dark eyes searched her frozen features with immediate concern.
"Rhaevia," Raevor called softly, his voice cutting through the silent room.
She barely heard him over the sudden rushing sound filling her ears. Her Guide core was trembling violently inside her chest. The trembling did not stem from fear. It was born from a sudden, overwhelming recognition.
The ancient Zerg Sovereign’s consciousness spread through her mental network like a vast shadow. It carried ancient memories that did not belong to the modern interstellar galaxy.
"The one you called the Zombie King was never the true King," the voice spoke again, echoing with cold, historical authority.
Rhaevia’s breath caught sharply in her throat.
"What?" she whispered aloud.
Raevor’s expression hardened as he sensed the sudden shift in her energy. He could not hear the Sovereign’s voice directly, but he felt the massive disturbance rippling through her mental domain.
"What is it telling you?" Raevor demanded, his grip on her shoulder tightening slightly.
Rhaevia stared ahead into the empty air, her eyes unseeing.
"The Zombie King..." she began, her voice trembling slightly.
She swallowed hard before finishing the thought. "It wasn’t the King."
The ancient Sovereign’s presence deepened inside her mind.
"It was merely a vessel," the entity explained calmly.
A violent energy pulse exploded through Rhaevia’s Guide core without warning. The sudden wave shattered her physical vision, plunging her mind into a vivid memory.
Images of blood, fire, and a crimson sky flooded her senses. She saw the ruined, burning cities of ancient Earth stretching toward the horizon.
She saw herself standing on the final battlefield of her previous life—the blood-soaked soil where she had fought and killed the Zombie King. But this time, something was fundamentally different about the scene. The memory began to distort and shift around her.
The Zombie King stood before her in the past, surrounded by thousands of undead creatures. Its monstrous body was covered in deep, fatal wounds. Its crimson eyes stared into hers, reflecting zero hatred. Rhaevia remembered raising her weapon to strike the final blow.
She remembered believing with absolute certainty that killing it would end the apocalypse. She remembered delivering the final strike that shattered its core. But now, a hidden layer of the memory unraveled. Another figure stood far behind the Zombie King.
It was a tall silhouette hidden within the smoke of the burning sky. The figure remained still, watching the battle unfold with silent authority. Rhaevia’s heart slammed violently against her ribs. That shadow had not been there in her original memory.
The memory distorted further as the past rewound. The Zombie King suddenly turned its head away from her. It looked not at Rhaevia, but toward the mysterious figure standing in the smoke. Then the monstrous creature slowly lowered its head.
It bowed in submission. Rhaevia’s eyes widened in absolute shock within the vision.
"No..." she whispered, denying what she was seeing.
The memory faded, immediately replaced by another. She saw the Zombie King standing alone among the concrete ruins.
It had possessed the speed and power to attack her while her guard was down. It could easily have killed her during her moment of physical exhaustion. Yet the creature had made no move to strike. Instead, it had stood motionless in the dust, simply waiting.
It had deliberately given her a clear opening to pierce its chest. Rhaevia remembered taking that opening without hesitation. She remembered driving her weapon straight through its central power core. She remembered the creature’s strange, gentle smile as it died.
At the time, she had dismissed that expression as the madness of a monster. Now, looking at the memory again, she finally understood. It had not been madness. It had been absolute surrender.
Her physical breathing became rapid and uneven as she returned to reality.
"He let me kill him," she gasped out.
Raevor’s dark eyes sharpened as he watched her face.
"Who?" he asked, his tone urgent.
"The Zombie King," Rhaevia replied, turning to look at him with disbelief written across her face.
"He could have killed me back then," she said, her voice barely a breath.
The ancient Sovereign answered her thought directly through her mind.
"Because his purpose was never to defeat you," the entity declared.
Another memory flashed unbidden before her eyes. She remembered the Zombie King’s final, raspy words as he collapsed.
You will return, the monster had whispered into the ash. The King remembers what you cannot.
Rhaevia’s blood ran cold as the realization settled over her. She had spent years believing those dying words were a dark curse. But perhaps they had been a crucial warning. Or perhaps they were a simple message passed across time.
The ancient Sovereign continued its silent explanation.
"The vessel carried only a tiny fragment of the King’s true consciousness," it revealed.
Rhaevia closed her eyes tightly against the headache forming behind her temples. A crushing pressure gathered inside her skull as her mind struggled to adapt.
"It was created to stand between the King and his true enemies," the voice explained.
"Then why did it become the Zombie King?" Rhaevia asked mentally, her voice shaking with emotion.
The answer returned with solemn clarity.
"Because the King needed you to believe you had won," the voice stated.
A heavy silence descended over the room.
Rhaevia slowly opened her eyes, meeting Raevor’s steady gaze. He stared at her, waiting patiently for her to process the shock.
"What did the voice say to you?" Raevor asked softly.
She couldn’t bring herself to answer him immediately. Her mind was racing at terrifying speeds, re-evaluating every historical fact she held dear.
If the Zombie King had merely been a vessel...
If it had deliberately allowed her to destroy it on that ruined world...
Then the apocalyptic war she remembered might not have happened the way she believed. The planetary outbreaks, the collapsing human governments, and the millions of tragic deaths took on a new context.
Her final, desperate battle as humanity’s general suddenly felt staged. Everything she had accepted as absolute history could have been carefully manipulated from the dark.
"Then..." Rhaevia’s voice dropped, becoming barely audible in the space.
"My entire apocalypse..." she murmured, looking down at her trembling hands.
Her fingers curled into loose fists as she faced the truth.
"Maybe it wasn’t what I thought it was at all," she confessed.
Raevor took a firm step closer, closing the distance between them.
"Rhaevia," he said softly, using his voice to ground her.
She looked up at him, her usual fierce confidence shattered. For the first time since they had met, he saw genuine uncertainty written in her eyes.
"What if I was never fighting the real enemy?" she asked him, her heart aching with the weight of the past.
Before Raevor could offer an answer, her Guide core erupted with radiant azure energy.
A sudden system notification flashed bright across her vision.
[ANCIENT MEMORY CORRECTION DETECTED.]
Rhaevia gasped, her back arching slightly as the energy surged.
A second notification flashed rapidly beneath the first.
[PREVIOUS MEMORY STRUCTURE: ALTERED.]
Another wave of mental energy struck her consciousness. The physical world around her dissolved into light.
She saw a breathtaking place far beyond the solar system of Earth. A vast, magnificent black palace floated among a sea of countless glowing stars.
Thousands of ancient Zerg warriors knelt in perfect rows across an endless celestial hall. At the far end of the grand room stood a massive throne carved from dark crystal. And standing directly before the throne was a tall man.
Rhaevia’s breath stopped entirely as the vision locked into place.
The memory sharpened until every detail became crystal clear. She was standing directly before the figure on the raised platform. She was not fighting him. She was not issuing military commands to attack. She felt zero fear standing in his overwhelming presence.
She was simply standing beside him as an equal. It felt as though she had known this person for countless lifetimes. The man’s face slowly became clear through the glowing cosmic light.
Rhaevia’s heart skipped a beat as recognition hit her. She had seen this face before, in the recurring dreams she had dismissed as mere nightmares.
The true King looked directly at her with ancient, gentle eyes.
And then he offered her a soft, familiar smile.
