the two-faced Adopted Girl Who Melted CEO's Ice-Cold Heart
Chapter 1655: Mr. Deng Comes to Demand the House
Yeats Howard drove straight to the courtyard, only to find Adan sitting in the yard in a daze while Marcus Quinn was packing. In his anxiousness, he yelled, “Tea, give me some tea to drink, my throat is a bit hoarse from shouting.”
Adan got up to pour tea, realizing she and Marcus had just returned, the tea was cold. Surprised, she said, “The tea is cold, let me brew you a pot of hot tea. Why are you back again?”
Yeats grabbed the cold tea, took a gulp, and felt his throat ease a bit. He slapped his thigh and shouted, “You two have caused such a commotion. If I didn’t come back to take you to the Howard Family, I’d be in pieces by tomorrow.”
Adan looked bewildered and urgently asked, “What do you mean?”
“We’re not going to the Howard Family. I’m taking Adan back to the Holiday Village,” Marcus said as he packed and pulled out two suitcases, instructing, “There are still some ingredients in the fridge that haven’t been used, and the house needs cleaning. I’ll leave you some money to hire a cleaning service.”
“Why leave? Such an exciting event, aren’t you staying to see it?” Yeats’s enthusiastic voice gradually quieted under Marcus’ cold gaze. “It’s not safe for you at the Holiday Village. It’s too easy for someone to make a move in such a barren place.”
“I have my plans,” Marcus said steadily.
Adan felt like she was listening to a foreign language and urgently grabbed Marcus’s arm, asking, “What exactly happened?”
Marcus paused in silence and said in a deep voice, “The Shaw Family and the Yarn Family have called off the engagement.”
Yeats nodded frantically and laughed heartily, “You just left, and Caspian Yarn went missing right after. The Shaw Family canceled the engagement on the spot. Everyone was dumbfounded. Now the whole Imperial City is buzzing with gossip. Hurry and go back to the Howard Family with me. Once it’s safe, you can return to the Holiday Village.”
Hearing their words, it was like a bolt from the blue for Adan. She couldn’t process it for a moment—Caspian Yarn disappeared, and the marriage between the Yarn Family and Shaw Family’s Miss was off? Wasn’t today their engagement party?
Adan couldn’t pinpoint her feelings; saying she wasn’t disappointed or upset was a lie. Childhood sweethearts getting married, but the bride wasn’t her. She had calmly accepted it since everyone has their own life. When she returned, she had decided to completely sever her ties with Caspian Yarn and treat each other as strangers.
But now, in less than two hours, the engagement was called off?
“Marcus, even if the Shaw Family and Yarn Family called off the engagement, what does that have to do with us? Why do we have to leave?”
Marcus sighed softly, reaching out to stroke the little girl’s dazed face, and hoarsely said, “I did this. Once the Yarn Family realizes, they will retaliate against me. Additionally, my father should know that I’ve returned to the Imperial City. There must be a reason for his inaction. We have to go back, Adan.”
Adan’s face turned pale as she looked steadily at Marcus, suddenly realizing that Marcus knew everything. He knew her identity, her relationship with Caspian Yarn, and that Caspian Yarn had climbed up to the Shaw Family’s Miss. He said nothing. Instead, he destroyed that marriage.
He has always been someone with power and means, but he just chose to live as an ordinary person.
“You knew about my relationship with Caspian Yarn?” Adan looked at Marcus in disbelief. Marcus never asked about her relationship with Caspian Yarn, so why did he ruin Caspian Yarn’s marriage? A cold thought crossed Adan’s mind, causing her to shiver all over.
Marcus knew she was extraordinarily intelligent; she just never speculated the worst in people. Given a single clue, she could untangle all the messy threads.
Marcus glanced at Yeats, saying softly, “I have something to discuss with Adan; keep an eye on the house and notify me if anything urgent comes up.”
“Alright, but be quick!” Yeats waved his hand.
Marcus led Adan into the house and closed the door. Seeing her desolate state, he reached out to hold her, tightly embracing her, and hoarsely said, “I’m sorry. I should have been honest with you sooner. You should know that I served in the Military District for many years and held a high rank, making it easy for me to verify things. You never hid your past, so I have long known about your engagement to Caspian Yarn and why you didn’t return to Seacoast. Adan, while you can endure, I cannot. I have to find out who wants to harm you and why, otherwise, I won’t be able to eat or sleep peacefully.”
For the past few months, he has kept her within his sight, fearing any negligence on his part, fearing her whereabouts would be discovered. He even had Chester Walker obtain military-grade equipment and used connections to secure a path.
