the two-faced Adopted Girl Who Melted CEO's Ice-Cold Heart
Chapter 1663 - 1601: Settling Accounts and Fighting for the Family Estate (Part 3)
Adan couldn’t help but find it laughable. The shamelessness of the Duncan Family was on par with her aunt’s family.
"This house was a condition of marriage, you can’t get it back," Adan said lightly.
"Then get a divorce."
"Yes, even if we get divorced, we must get the house back."
Marcus Quinn’s face finally darkened, his thin lips tightly pressed together, his heart completely cold. He would never divorce Adan in his life.
"I’ve already given up my inheritance rights to the house, and I won’t get a share in a divorce. Besides, I will never divorce," Marcus said coldly, his voice deep and with a tinge of anger.
The Duncan family felt like they’d been struck by lightning. Father Duncan was so angry he was looking around the house for something to hit Marcus with. Elowen Duncan plopped down on the ground, feeling her dowry was gone, and the two sons from her uncle’s family felt like the benefits in their hands had disappeared.
"Wow, are you going to hit someone? Assault with violence? Or is it a high-ranking official abusing a civilian?" Yeats Howard chuckled coldly, "Logan Duncan, if you swing that stick today, I’ll have my father get you removed from your position tomorrow, believe it or not?"
Father Duncan was nearly knocked over with anger, his face turning blue, while Elowen Duncan stomped her feet and screamed, "Marcus, you’ve angered your father to death."
"Uncle," the two sons from the uncle’s family pretended to support Father Duncan while shouting.
With the sudden rush of anger, Father Duncan remembered the previous plan and decided not to get up. He didn’t even need to act anymore; he was shaking with rage, feeling like he’d lost a billion. No way, he still had to scrape something off Marcus, since the house was still in his wife’s name; the couple wouldn’t split up.
Father Duncan gave Elowen Duncan a look; since they couldn’t get the house, they had a backup plan.
Elowen Duncan, not being stupid, began crying and calling out to Father Duncan while cursing Marcus, shouting that she wanted to sever ties with Marcus, but first, Marcus had to repay the Duncan family’s kindness in raising him over the years.
Adan saw the situation turning to outright selling a son for money, glanced meaningfully at Yeats Howard, and gestured towards the entrance. Yeats, being exceptionally clever, realized that all this commotion was just between the two families with no witnesses. Even if they sorted it out today, tomorrow they could easily deny everything, so he rushed out to call for the police!
Seeing the Duncan family’s shamelessness, Adan lightly held Marcus’s hand. The man’s strong body trembled, but he didn’t look back at her; he just held her small hand tightly, gripping so hard it hurt her a little.
At that moment, Adan truly felt sorry for Marcus. She thought she was miserable, but for the first twenty-two years of her life, she grew up carefree. Marcus, on the other hand, lost the only elder who loved him in his youth. His father’s stepfamily was like leeches, never feeling warmth, only having his life’s blood drained. In such an environment, he could still grow up silent yet strong, defending his home and country, becoming a man of integrity and stability, which was not easy at all.
Yeats Howard soon returned with a team of policemen. The policemen who had been waiting outside saw a member of the influential Howard family personally come out, so they couldn’t just stand by and had to handle this by the book.
"What’s going on? Is this a gang fight or trespassing?" The square-faced team leader shouted with a blank face, though lacking confidence, yet his police uniform alone could intimidate the Zamora family.
"Officer, there’s no fight. It’s about fighting over family property," Elowen Duncan rattled off.
The team of policemen, mostly younger men and women apart from their leader, fell into a strange silence after hearing this. Damn, it’s their first encounter with such a case—an elderly person’s house left to a grandson, with unrelated individuals vying for it. In the past, they’d all be taken to the station for further education, but given both sides had influential backgrounds, they could only find a middle ground, not daring to offend either side.
Seeing the police had arrived, Adan flashed a slight smile and, after Elowen Duncan finished speaking, said, "Officers, it’s hard for even a wise judge to resolve family disputes. We won’t make it difficult for you. Just be witnesses and mediate a bit."
"Serving the people is our duty. That can be arranged," the team leader immediately said with a smile.
Adan looked at Elowen Duncan and said, "Since you said Marcus owes the Duncan family for raising him, then calculate how much was spent on him all these years, year by year, including food and lodging costs. Anything over a hundred thousand should come with receipts and lists."
The Duncan family, hearing this meant money was involved, felt delighted instantly. Elowen Duncan looked back at Father Duncan and said, "I’ll have my father calculate it; through the years, the amount isn’t small."
"Okay," Adan responded indifferently. Marcus and Yeats kept silent. These two tough guys could have the upper hand with fists but were helpless when it came to dealing with such trivial family spats and petty arguments, so they could only unconditionally trust Adan to manage this.
Adan had already done the math. Marcus didn’t return to the Duncan family until he was eight or nine, merely completing junior and senior high before going to university. All the fees at the military academy were waived, and he received a full scholarship every year. He spent his own money on living expenses. At most, the Duncan family could count the costs during the six years he stayed with them and can’t demand much. When the sum comes out, Adan sneered, ready to slowly settle another account with the Duncan family.
