Chapter 306: Sophie’s Admission [3]
Attacking Nemur now meant saying goodbye to my academy life and all the plans that I had regarding the same.
If the situation escalates today in any way, I would have to hide from the eyes of the world going forward.
I won’t be able to operate in the open like how I normally did.
Still, it didn’t mean that the situation was hopeless.
I could prosper even while being a criminal in the eyes of the world; after all, that was who I had always been.
"I know you still have a way to save yourself."
"..."
"I can see it from your eyes, kid."
Nemur’s grip on my neck was amplified further, though I channelled more mana through my body to negate its effect.
It was only due to the strengthening of the muscles in my neck using the mana at my disposal that I was still alive, or else my head would have already been lying on the floor below.
Though I knew that Nemur had purposefully limited his strength so as to corner me but avoid killing me at the same time.
If Nemur had truly wanted to kill me, his mana pressure alone was enough to snuff out my life.
I could feel a warm liquid flowing down my neck, as Nemur’s fingers dug deeper into my neck.
My eyes, though, still had the same expression as before, as I didn’t waver under the pressure.
"Look at me."
BAM!
Seeing the indifference in my eyes, Nemur picked me up from the chair by my neck before slamming my body against the nearby wall.
One moment I was near the table, and within a fraction of a second I was already against the wall.
Neither my eyes nor my mind was able to process the events.
"You have quite the durable body for a mere Silver 3."
Nemur commented, with his voice dropping to its lowest pitch.
It was only natural for a Gold 2 to have a stronger body than someone who was in the Silver rank, coupled with the fact that I had been under intensive training by Arthur, making my body far stronger than even the best Gold Cores out there.
"You sure are a man of mysteries, Kael Frost, but... don’t mistake that my curiosity in regards to you will stop me from erasing your soul out of this pathetic world."
Though Nemur’s face stayed the same, I felt like he was uttering the words while gritting his teeth.
"You don’t have to speak. Just listen carefully to everything that I say."
"..."
"Is that clear?"
"..."
"I asked, is that clear?"
Nemur tightened the grip on my neck while repeating the question in a slow manner.
Still, even after his words, which sounded like a sort of ultimatum, I didn’t utter a single reply.
Honestly, with my throat being suppressed to such an extent, it was nearly impossible for me to speak.
Though I could have tried to nod my head to ease the pressure on my neck, I did nothing of the sort.
My eyes stayed the same as before, as I calmly observed Nemur in silence.
My current behaviour could be the very reason for my end, but still, I refused to give Nemur the satisfaction that he must have been expecting from me.
I wasn’t going to be subservient to someone only because they had the switch over my death.
If I met my end in the process, then that was it.
My life had always been a game of death.
Nemur’s face had a slight frown on it, with his eyebrows raised in question.
"Are you that confident in whatever backup option you might have to save your life?"
The headmaster seemed to have misunderstood the situation, but I couldn’t blame him for it.
Maybe the thought of having the protection of Arthur was the main reason behind amplifying these self-destructive thoughts in me.
If Arthur hadn’t been there, then maybe I would have used a far more diplomatic and soft approach... sacrificing my pride in the process.
"Alright."
Hm?
Seemingly realizing something, Nemur let go of my neck before retreating a few steps to create a formal distance between us.
"Just answer my question."
I thought he had let go of the matter, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
"Since becoming an Immortal, there were very few things in the world that could truly harm me. And those threats were further reduced once I had evolved to become who I am today."
Tapping his chest lightly, Nemur looked at me with eyes that weren’t emotionless anymore.
Though there was no hint of warmth in them... at the moment, it at least felt like I was talking to a living person and not some soulless corpse.
"Before reaching the step of true Godhood, it was my instincts and my sharp mind that had saved me from countless situations where I could have perished quite easily."
Nemur walked a step further to close the distance between us before staring into my eyes with a curious yet cautious gaze.
"After becoming Immortal, these instincts of mine had rarely activated as the threats in my vicinity had reached another level. Beings in our rank rarely engage themselves in pointless fights as they have countless other productive things to do, but... for some reason, when you had mentioned the thing about being able to summon me in times when you require my help, my instincts, which had been dormant for so long, had given me a strong warning."
Ah, so that was it.
"Whoever you are trying to protect yourself against is clearly someone who may be responsible for creating obstacles in my path. So... it would be great if you explain everything without hiding anything from me."
Nemur’s words felt like he was the one trying to protect me from the dangers of the world.
Our conversation might have been a short one, but for some reason, I felt like I had aged a bit during this limited time.
