Chapter 307: Sophie’s Admission [4]
"I would be glad to help you, but honestly speaking, there’s no one I am trying to defend myself against."
Though I had tried my best to make my voice sound sincere, looking at Nemur, he didn’t seem to believe even a single word that I had uttered.
Had I been in his place, I wouldn’t have believed it either.
"I am just trying to help you."
Nemur’s voice had now dropped low, as his words sounded softer than before, but I wasn’t one to fall for his traps.
"I understand your concern, but there really isn’t anything with which you could possibly help me."
"Are you sure?"
"I am."
Seeing my resolute expression, Nemur sighed before retreating towards his chair.
If someone else had been present here at the moment, they would have thought that we were a pair of a loving father and an obedient son, who were engaged in a healthy conversation.
No one in their right mind would have ever believed that just moments earlier, this very same old man had been gripping me by my neck and had also brutally slammed me against the wall, not caring for the injuries that I could have suffered.
Nemur had now once again settled into his chair, as he interlocked the fingers of his hands before placing them just near his chin.
"This is the last time that I am asking you... who is it?"
Well, that was fair enough.
Even though he had said that this would be the last time that he would ask about the identity of whoever had resulted in triggering his instincts... I couldn’t help but feel like an ultimatum had been given to me.
"When we had made the deal regarding you being my guardian, do you remember the question that I had asked you at that time?"
My words made Nemur raise his brows, while narrowing his eyes at the same time.
"How far can you go for my help... that was the question that I had asked you."
If Nemur wasn’t willing to let go of the matter, then I had to reveal the presence of the parasite to him in a way that would be the most advantageous for me given the current circumstances.
Though it wasn’t a given that Nemur would act according to how I wanted him to behave.
By revealing the parasite’s identity, I would be putting Diana’s life in mortal danger, something that I wanted to avoid at all costs.
Still, at the end of the day, there was a limit to how much effort I could expend in protecting Diana.
If shielding her from Nemur’s influence meant fighting against him in the best case and being killed by him in the worst possible outcome, then... it was a given what my decision would be.
"As long as it doesn’t end with a fight against the Sovereigns... that was what you had said."
Seeing Nemur’s silence, I continued with my words.
I could clearly remember the day when I had made the deal with Nemur, and every word that he had said during our conversation.
Fighting against Immortals was his limit, and if Sovereigns were involved in the scenario, then Nemur would back off... at least that was what I had inferred from his words.
"Are you saying that whoever is trying to harm you is a... Sovereign?"
I didn’t reply to Nemur’s words, choosing to stare at him in silence.
But my silence was an answer in itself.
"How do you know it’s a Sovereign?"
Sigh.
I really wanted to give the most strategic answer at the moment, but no matter what, I couldn’t find the right words.
Any answer from my part would be a dead giveaway of Diana’s identity.
Nemur calmly observed me as he waited through my silence.
The silence in the room had begun to feel suffocating as Nemur’s gaze bore down on me.
Still, I didn’t let anything affect me, as my brain processed the best reply that I could utter at the moment.
Seconds soon turned into a minute, though Nemur didn’t interrupt me during the entire time.
I had to commend his patience, as for someone at his level, such a wait was equivalent to being insulted by a mere kid... a Silver 3, no less.
"It’s just a guess on my part."
I decided to be diplomatically honest. After all, though I had analysed the rank of the parasite by its ability to hide from the eyes of the Sovereigns of House Veltra, at the end of the day... I had guessed the parasite to be a Sovereign or maybe an existence of a higher rank.
And honestly, I had never said the parasite was a Sovereign.
It was Nemur who had interpreted my words in such a way.
I had just hinted at the parasite being someone who was above the rank of an Immortal.
"Guess, huh. Are you sure it’s a Sovereign and not something stronger than that?"
Nemur was clearly not willing to leave any open ends.
"You may know it, but still, I will be generous enough to remind you that I am a Silver 3."
My words might have sounded rude, but looking at Nemur, he didn’t seem to be offended by the statement.
On the contrary, Nemur raised his brows before slightly widening his eyes in some sort of realization.
"So, who is it?"
After getting to know the rank of his enemy, Nemur’s curiosity seemed to have been amplified further.
There was no way he would be satisfied just by the information that I had revealed until now.
"It’s someone who you may have known in the past."
After all, for the parasite to have such a high rank, it should have been alive during Nemur’s time.
It wasn’t like becoming a Sovereign was a walk in the park.
It took several decades or maybe even centuries for an Immortal to be able to advance in rank, so it was a given that the parasite should have lived long enough for it to have come in contact with Nemur in the past.
There was no way two Sovereigns who lived in the same era didn’t know of each other’s identities.
"Past?"
