Chapter 308: Sophie’s Admission [5]
Though Nemur asked the question, it felt like... it was more for himself than for me.
And I had now come to the limit of what I could reveal before the headmaster of Namda.
Any new addition on my part would be sure to reveal the identity of Diana within seconds, as Nemur was in no way a fool.
That was the reason that I hadn’t even mentioned the being I was trying to protect myself against had possessed a person in the current era.
Nemur would be quick to narrow down all the people in the world who could be possessed by the parasite, and for that he would first take into consideration every last person who shared a connection with me, including those that might have just met me for a few seconds.
A Sovereign was someone who had lived for centuries, and that was proof enough of how beings on their level viewed the world.
For Nemur, searching through the entire world for a single person wasn’t much of a big deal, and the guy would stay patient till he found his prey.
That was why I had to be careful about what words I could utter before the old undying monster.
This guy wasn’t someone to be messed around with.
Hm?
Without me noticing, I had become quite cautious in my approach.
Though I had never been an impulsive fool, still such extreme caution wasn’t part of me either.
The merger... it had definitely affected me.
Sigh.
That was something which should have been expected, as Kael’s original soul was affected by my traits, so it shouldn’t really have been a surprise for the former’s soul to affect mine.
"Should I take your lack of input as your unwillingness to cooperate with me?"
After a short silence, Nemur was back to the topic, as his eyes probed mine for any lie that I might have presented before him.
"I think I have cooperated enough. It’s you who hasn’t been helpful enough to me."
Though I knew that Nemur wasn’t going to give up until I revealed the identity of the parasite, I still had to somehow change the topic of our discussion... and what better way than having my primary aim fulfilled.
"Are you going to admit my friend into the academy or not?"
Securing Sophie’s admission to the academy was of importance to Kael.
Being related to Arthur had already made Sophie an important piece in Kael’s plan.
Now, having discovered her potential, the girl had become a very valuable tool for Kael to use.
A tool whose creator had already bent the knee and pledged his allegiance to Kael.
Turning his daughter into a loyal servant was just a bonus on the way for Kael... and me.
Even I couldn’t deny the value that the girl had.
The hints of her talent that could be deduced from the available information were enough to know that her potential was limitless.
A person who could rival the protagonist of the game wasn’t someone to be trifled with.
Sophie’s talent was valuable, and adding to that was the fact that the girl was a beauty who could rival the best royal princesses out there.
Someday or the other, this very beauty of hers would prove beneficial to me.
After all, beauty was something that even the gods couldn’t win against.
"I may not know everything about you, but there is one thing that I can say with absolute certainty."
Hm?
Crossing his right leg over the other one, Nemur looked at me with an amused expression.
"You don’t care for anyone except yourself."
Silence.
Though what Nemur had said was the truth... I couldn’t help but feel naked before him, after having my real self dissected and presented before me in mere words.
"I hope you didn’t take me for a fool."
Seeing my silence, Nemur let out a chuckle that felt a little suffocating to me.
Still, my face stayed the same, not betraying what thoughts were being processed in my mind.
"You had helped the commoners not because you wanted to, but because they are a good shield for your image."
"..."
"The same could be said for making me your Guardian. You want the world to see how righteous you are, don’t you?"
Nemur spoke the words as if he had achieved some milestone by analysing my actions—
"Seeing all your actions... I couldn’t help but be curious about something."
Nemur, placing his hands behind his neck, leaned back in his chair, as he observed me with his lips stretched into a smile that didn’t seem to reach his eyes.
"Why are you trying to be good before the world?"
Sigh.
I knew I was fooling no one, when all my actions seemed to have a specific path in mind before they were executed for the world to see.
But—
"You are quite good at theories."
"..."
"Maybe... write a book or two."
Just because someone had suspicions about my actions, didn’t mean that they were right.
I could just feign ignorance whenever such topics arose.
After all, without knowing the criminal side of my life... there was no proof for anyone to believe their own claims about me and my behaviour.
Even Nemur was just saying whatever he had thought after seeing the pattern in my actions.
That in itself proved nothing, and didn’t harm me in any way.
"My apologies if my words sounded rude to you. It’s just that I have now grown curious about this girl, whom you are trying so hard to get admitted into the academy."
There wasn’t a hint of apology in Nemur’s tone.
His voice was now bright like the sun, as if he were trying to soothe a crying child.
The thought disgusted me to my core, though there was no change in the expressions on my face whatsoever.
"I never knew the Sovereigns were free enough to gossip about others."
I had no interest in wasting my time with this—
"Hahahhaha."
My words seemed to have an impact beyond my assumption, as Nemur had begun to laugh like a... fool.
