The Villain's Karma System
Chapter 27: The Story That Walked Out
The Story That Walked Out
The black door opened.
Slowly.
Almost reluctantly.
A cold wind swept across Aetheris Academy.
It carried no snow.
No dust.
No scent of rain.
Instead, it carried words.
Fragments of sentences.
Names.
Memories.
Pieces of conversations that had never happened.
Kael stood in the underground chamber and stared upward.
The same symbol covered the enormous door.
A crown.
An eye.
A broken chain.
Except now—
The eye was open.
Something moved behind it.
Kael tightened his grip on his sword.
"Everyone stay back."
Second glanced at him.
"You don’t know what’s coming."
"Exactly."
Kael took another step forward.
"That means I should be the one closest to it."
Third stared at him.
"You’re starting to sound like someone who expects to survive."
Kael glanced over his shoulder.
"I do.
A faint smile appeared.
"I have a terrible habit of doing that."
Pi chirped.
"Pi."
"See?"
Kael pointed at the creature.
"Pi agrees."
Second sighed.
"You two are impossible."
A thunderous sound came from above.
BOOOOOOM!
The entire academy shook.
Stone broke loose from the ceiling.
Kael looked upward.
"It’s coming."
Then—
Silence.
The door stopped opening.
Kael frowned.
Nothing happened.
No monster.
No mysterious figure.
No ancient entity.
Nothing.
He slowly lowered his sword.
"...Did we just get dramatic for nothing?"
Second stared at him.
"Don’t say that."
"Why?"
"Because whenever you say something like that, something worse happens."
Kael blinked.
"You’ve noticed?"
"Yes."
Third nodded.
"He has a pattern."
Kael looked offended.
"I do not."
The ceiling exploded.
BOOM!
Kael’s hair was blown backward.
Dust filled the chamber.
Second covered his face.
Third stepped away.
Pi vanished beneath Kael’s coat.
Kael coughed.
"Fine."
He stared upward.
"I admit it."
A figure descended through the broken ceiling.
Not falling.
Walking.
As though invisible stairs existed in the air.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
The figure wore a long white robe.
No armor.
No weapons.
No visible face.
Where its face should have been was a smooth white surface.
And across that surface—
A single black word.
PROTAGONIST.
Kael’s expression went blank.
"You’ve got to be kidding me."
The figure tilted its head.
"Why?"
Kael pointed his sword.
"Because that’s not a person’s name."
The figure looked at the word on its face.
Then at Kael
"I have no name."
Second’s expression darkened.
Third whispered:
"A role."
The figure looked toward him.
"Correct."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?"
"I am the protagonist."
"Of what?"
The figure’s head tilted slightly.
"Your story."
The chamber fell silent.
Kael stared.
Then laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because the answer was so absurd that his brain didn’t know how else to react.
"My story already has a protagonist."
The figure looked at him.
"Leon Ardent."
Kael’s smile disappeared.
The figure continued.
"Correct."
"Then what are you?"
"I am the protagonist of the First Story."
Kael’s expression hardened.
"That’s impossible."
"No."
The figure raised one hand.
"It is inevitable."
A wave of pressure spread through the chamber.
Kael’s body became heavy.
His knees nearly buckled.
Second immediately stepped forward.
"Kael!"
"I’m fine."
Kael forced himself upright.
The figure’s blank face remained fixed on him.
"You should not be here."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Funny."
The pressure increased.
"You should not remember."
Kael’s expression became colder.
"Also heard that one before."
"You should not have returned."
Kael smiled.
"And yet..."
He raised his sword.
"Here I am."
The pressure suddenly vanished.
The figure lowered its hand.
"Interesting."
Kael didn’t move.
"What?"
"You are different."
"From what?"
The figure stared at him.
"From the First."
Kael’s expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
The figure didn’t answer.
Instead, it turned toward Second.
"Second."
Second’s body stiffened.
"Then Third."
Third’s eyes narrowed.
Finally—
The figure looked at Kael.
"First."
Kael felt something strange.
The word didn’t sound like a title this time.
It sounded like recognition.
The figure knew them.
Not as characters.
Not as names.
As positions.
As something older.
Kael took a step forward.
"You know what we are."
"Yes."
"Then tell me."
The figure remained silent.
Kael’s voice became sharper.
"Tell me what First, Second, and Third actually mean."
The figure looked at him.
"You are the first deviation."
Kael frowned.
"Deviation from what?"
"The story."
Kael’s heart skipped.
Second lowered his gaze.
Third remained completely still.
The figure continued.
"Second is the second deviation."
Its gaze shifted.
"Third is the third."
Then it looked upward.
"And Fourth is not a deviation."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"Then what is Fourth?"
The figure answered:
"A boundary."
Kael remembered the ancient entity beneath Aetheris.
Fourth.
The massive presence that called itself the boundary between what was written and what could still be changed.
But this creature was different.
It was confirming something.
Or perhaps—
Only confirming what it wanted them to believe.
Kael wasn’t sure anymore.
"Then what are you?"
The figure’s face remained blank.
"I am what the First Story requires."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"A character."
"No."
"A role?"
"No."
"An entity?"
"No."
Kael sighed.
"Do you ever answer normally?"
"No."
"Of course."
The figure stepped forward.
Every time it moved, the world changed.
The stone beneath its feet became polished marble.
The walls turned white.
Ancient symbols appeared.
Then vanished.
The academy around them flickered.
For a moment, Kael saw a completely different building.
A vast white fortress.
But it wasn’t Aetheris.
It was older.
Much older.
People in strange clothing walked through enormous halls.
Magic flowed through the walls.
Children studied.
Knights trained.
Mages argued.
Then the image disappeared.
Kael’s eyes widened.
"That was..."
"The First Academy."
Second looked at him.
"The first version of Aetheris?"
The figure nodded.
"No."
It looked toward the ceiling.
"Aetheris is the first academy."
Kael frowned.
"Then what did we just see?"
"The place before Aetheris."
Third’s expression changed.
"The prototype."
The figure looked at him.
"Correct."
Kael stared.
"You mean this academy has existed before?"
"Not this academy."
The figure raised one finger.
"The concept of the academy."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"So the First Story isn’t a book."
"No."
"It’s a world?"
"No."
"Then what?"
The figure’s blank face turned toward him.
"It is the first narrative structure that learned how to continue without its creator."
Silence.
Even the System remained quiet.
Kael slowly lowered his sword.
"A story that continued by itself..."
The figure nodded.
"And eventually learned how to create characters."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Then the Author..."
"Came later."
The words hit him.
The Author wasn’t the beginning.
The Author inherited something.
Something older.
Something that already existed.
Kael remembered the First Tower.
The city of names.
The figure with the black quill.
The statement:
The same person who wrote the name you were given.
But they weren’t the first.
Now he understood.
At least partially.
The Author wasn’t the source of everything.
They were part of something older.
A system.
A structure.
A narrative that had existed before them.
Kael’s thoughts raced.
"Then who created the First Story?"
The figure looked at him.
"No one."
Kael froze.
"What?"
"It created itself."
The chamber became silent.
Then—
BEEP.
The System finally appeared.
[WORLDLINE INFORMATION UPDATED]
First Story: Self-originating narrative structure.
Creator: None detected.
Status: Active.
Age: Unknown.
Warning: Information may conflict with existing worldline history.
Kael stared.
"No creator..."
The figure nodded.
"That is why the Author fears it."
Kael looked toward the black door.
"And that’s why they can’t completely control it."
"Yes."
A sudden tremor shook the academy.
The figure looked upward.
"It has awakened."
Kael immediately raised his sword.
"What has?"
The figure answered with one word.
"Everything."
---
Aetheris Academy — Surface
Leon Ardent stood in the center of the main courtyard.
His sword was drawn.
Around him, students were running.
Teachers shouted orders.
Magical barriers flickered above the academy.
But none of that was what Leon was looking at.
He stared at the sky.
The black door hung above Aetheris like an enormous wound.
Mira stood beside him.
Her dark-blue hair whipped around her face.
"What is that?"
Leon shook his head.
"I don’t know."
Mira’s eyes narrowed.
"Kael is below us."
Leon looked at her.
"You know that?"
"He disappeared underground."
Mira’s expression was serious.
"And whenever something impossible happens, he somehow ends up in the middle of it."
Leon couldn’t argue with that.
A voice came from behind them.
"Then perhaps we should find him."
Elena.
She stood several meters away.
Her silver hair was tied back.
Her violet eyes were focused on the underground entrance.
Leon nodded.
"Agreed."
Mira looked at Elena.
"You’re his cousin."
"Yes."
"Do you know what’s happening?"
"No."
Elena tightened her grip around her staff.
"But I know Kael."
Mira blinked.
Elena looked toward the black door.
"He won’t run."
Leon smiled faintly.
"I was thinking the same thing."
The sky suddenly cracked.
KRRRRAAAACK!
Everyone looked up.
The black door opened wider.
A wave of white light descended.
Students screamed.
Leon raised his sword.
Mira’s hands glowed with spatial magic.
Elena prepared a spell.
Then—
The white light stopped.
A single word appeared across the sky.
PROTAGONIST.
Leon stared.
"What?"
Mira’s expression became confused.
"What does that mean?"
Elena looked toward the ground.
Her eyes widened.
"Kael."
---
Underground Chamber
Kael felt it.
Something had changed.
The worldline had reacted to the First Story.
He looked toward the figure.
"Leon."
The figure nodded.
"Yes."
"The First Story is interacting with him."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because he is the protagonist of this world."
Kael’s expression darkened.
"Then what happens if the First Story takes him?"
The figure remained silent.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"What happens?"
The answer finally came.
"The worldline will replace him."
Kael froze
"Replace him with what?"
The figure looked toward the black door.
"With the protagonist of the First Story."
Kael’s grip tightened.
"So Leon would become a character in someone else’s story."
"Yes."
"And lose himself?"
"Yes."
Kael’s eyes became cold.
"Not happening."
Second stepped forward.
"You can’t fight the First Story."
Kael looked at him.
"Watch me."
Third shook his head.
"You don’t understand."
"I understand enough."
Kael pointed his sword toward the figure.
"If that thing wants Leon, then I’m going to stop it."
The figure stared at him.
"Why?"
Kael blinked.
"Why what?"
"Why protect him?"
Kael didn’t answer immediately.
The original story had made Leon his enemy.
Kael was supposed to hate him.
Leon was supposed to defeat him.
Kael was supposed to die.
But that was the story.
Not reality.
Kael smiled.
"Because he’s my friend."
The figure became completely still.
Something changed.
For the first time—
The word on its face disappeared.
The blank white surface remained.
Then a new word appeared.
UNEXPECTED.
Kael stared.
"What?"
The figure looked at him.
"You chose something the story did not expect."
Kael’s smile widened.
"That’s kind of my specialty."
The System appeared.
[KARMA EVENT DETECTED]
Host rejected predetermined interpersonal conflict.
Reward: +100 Karma.
Kael blinked.
"Now that’s more like it."
Second sighed.
"You’re impossible."
"Already established."
Suddenly—
BOOOOOOM!
The chamber wall exploded.
Kael turned.
A massive golden blade cut through the stone.
Someone stepped through the opening.
Golden hair.
Blue eyes.
Sword in hand.
Leon.
Kael stared.
"Leon?"
Leon looked at him.
"Kael!"
Kael smiled.
"You took your time."
Leon looked around.
"Do you have any idea what’s happening?"
"No."
Leon sighed.
"Good."
Kael blinked.
"Why is that good?"
"Because I was worried you’d somehow understand all of this."
Kael laughed.
For a brief moment—
The impossible situation felt almost normal.
Then Leon looked at the white figure.
His expression changed.
"Who is that?"
The figure turned toward Leon.
The word PROTAGONIST appeared again.
Leon froze.
The figure raised its hand.
A thin black thread appeared between them.
Leon gasped.
Kael moved.
"Leon!"
Kael swung his sword.
CLANG!
The blade struck the thread.
The thread snapped.
Leon collapsed to one knee.
The figure stepped backward.
Kael stared at the broken thread.
The System flashed.
[WARNING]
Narrative connection severed.
Target: Leon Ardent.
External role assignment interrupted.
Kael looked at Leon.
"You okay?"
Leon nodded.
"I think so."
Kael looked back at the figure.
"Try that again."
The figure remained silent.
Then the word on its face changed.
VILLAIN.
Kael’s expression darkened.
The figure raised its hand.
Another thread appeared.
This one connected to Kael.
Kael’s eyes widened.
He tried to cut it.
His sword passed through.
Nothing happened.
The System screamed.
[CRITICAL WARNING]
Host’s narrative identity being forcibly reinforced.
Assigned Role: VILLAIN.
Compatibility: 93%.
Kael froze.
"What?"
The number increased.
94%.
95%.
The figure spoke.
"You can protect the protagonist."
The thread tightened.
"But you cannot escape the role."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
The figure continued.
"You are the villain."
Kael’s grip tightened.
"Am I?"
96%.
The word VILLAIN appeared across the chamber.
Kael stared at it.
Then he smiled.
"No."
The figure tilted its head.
Kael raised his sword.
"You’re wrong."
97%.
"I’ve been called a villain."
98%.
"I’ve acted like one."
99%.
"But that’s not what I am."
The thread tightened.
Kael’s sword began cracking.
The System flashed.
[NARRATIVE INTERFERENCE ACTIVATED.]
Kael looked directly at the figure.
"You don’t get to decide."
The thread snapped.
BOOOOOOM!
A shockwave blasted through the chamber.
The word VILLAIN shattered.
The figure stumbled backward.
For the first time—
It looked surprised.
Kael stood amid the debris.
His sword was cracked.
His clothes were covered in dust.
But his eyes were steady.
The System appeared.
[Narrative role rejection confirmed.]
Reward: +150 Karma.
Hidden condition discovered.
Host’s identity cannot be completely overwritten while Host continues making choices inconsistent with assigned narrative roles.
Kael smiled.
"So that’s the trick."
Second stared.
"What trick?"
Kael looked at him.
"I don’t need to become stronger than the story."
He raised his cracked sword.
"I just need to keep refusing to become what it wants."
Third’s eyes narrowed.
"That’s dangerous."
Kael nodded.
"I know."
Leon stood beside him.
"Then let’s do it together."
Kael glanced at him.
"You sure?"
Leon smiled.
"I’m starting to think following the story is overrated."
Kael laughed.
"Now you’re getting it."
Mira’s voice suddenly echoed from the broken entrance.
"Are you two seriously joking right now?"
Kael looked over.
Mira and Elena stood at the entrance.
Mira looked exhausted.
Elena looked furious.
Kael smiled.
"Nice of you to join us."
Elena walked straight toward him.
"You disappeared into an impossible underground chamber, caused half the academy to shake, and somehow managed to attract another mysterious entity."
Kael shrugged.
"Technically, it found me."
Elena closed her eyes.
"Of course."
Mira looked at the white figure.
"What is that?"
Kael’s expression became serious.
"The protagonist of the First Story."
Mira stared.
"That’s not reassuring."
"No."
Kael looked toward the black door.
"And it wants Leon."
Leon raised his sword.
"Then it picked the wrong target."
A smile appeared on Kael’s face.
"Agreed."
The white figure looked at all of them.
For several seconds, it remained silent.
Then—
The word on its face changed.
CAST.
Kael frowned.
"Cast?"
The figure raised its hand.
Across the entire academy—
Names began appearing.
One by one.
LEON ARDENT — PROTAGONIST
KAEL VEYRON — VILLAIN
MIRA ASHBOURNE — COMPANION
ELENA VEYRON — SUPPORT
LUCIEN GRAVES — SCHOLAR
Then—
Another name appeared.
PI — WITNESS
Pi growled.
"Pi!"
Kael’s expression became furious.
"No."
He stepped forward.
The figure looked at him.
Kael raised his sword.
"You can label us all you want."
The academy trembled.
Kael’s eyes burned with determination.
"But we’re not your characters."
He pointed the cracked blade at the white figure.
"We’re people."
The System appeared.
For a moment, the notification flickered.
Then a new line appeared.
[UNKNOWN CONDITION SATISFIED.]
The Host has rejected the concept of predetermined roles for others
Karma Reward: +500.
Kael’s eyes widened.
"Five hundred?"
The System remained silent.
Then—
[The System is impressed.]
Kael smiled.
"About time."
The black door above Aetheris suddenly began closing.
The white figure looked upward.
"No."
For the first time, urgency entered its voice.
Kael noticed.
"What?"
The figure turned toward him.
"The First Story is closing."
Kael’s expression changed.
"Isn’t that good?"
"No."
The figure looked toward the sky.
"If it closes now—"
The entire academy went silent.
Then the figure finished:
"Everything that entered from the First Story will be trapped here."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"Everything?"
The figure nodded.
"Including you."
A cold silence fell over the chamber.
Kael slowly looked upward.
The black door was closing.
Behind it—
Thousands of white eyes watched.
And among those eyes—
Kael saw one familiar crimson pair.
A silver mask.
Observer.
His eyes widened.
"Observer."
The masked figure stood beyond the closing door.
He looked directly at Kael.
Then he raised one hand.
Not a wave.
A warning.
His lips moved.
Kael couldn’t hear him.
But he understood.
Don’t let the door close.
The door continued shutting.
2 HOURS, 31 MINUTES.
Kael looked at the others.
Leon.
Mira.
Elena.
Second.
Third.
Pi.
Then toward Observer.
Kael’s cracked sword trembled in his hand.
He smiled.
"Alright."
He stepped forward.
"Let’s break another rule."
And the entire Aetheris Academy began to rise toward the closing door.
