The Villain's Karma System
Chapter 28: The Academy That Refused to Fall
The academy rose.
Not metaphorically.
Not through some illusion created by magic.
Aetheris Academy was physically leaving the ground.
The enormous white fortress groaned as its foundations tore away from the earth.
Training arenas lifted.
Lecture halls shook.
Floating platforms spun wildly through the air.
The towers stretched toward the sky as if something above them had begun pulling the entire academy upward.
Students screamed.
Professors shouted.
Magical barriers flickered around the campus.
And above everything—
The black door was closing.
Kael stared upward.
"That’s... new."
Mira looked at him.
"New?"
The entire academy shook violently.
"You call this new?"
Kael shrugged.
"I’ve had a complicated day."
Elena grabbed his shoulder.
"Kael."
He looked at her.
Her expression was serious.
"Can you stop it?"
Kael looked toward the sky.
The black door continued closing.
Beyond it stood Observer.
His silver mask reflected the pale light.
His crimson eyes remained fixed on Kael.
Kael clenched his fist.
"I don’t know."
Elena nodded.
"Then figure it out."
Kael blinked.
"That was surprisingly supportive."
"Don’t get used to it."
Mira stepped closer.
"I think I know what’s happening."
Everyone looked at her.
Mira pointed toward the academy’s foundation.
"Look."
Kael followed her gaze.
Thin black lines covered the ground beneath the academy.
They weren’t cracks.
They were words.
Thousands of them.
Old words.
Some had faded.
Others were still glowing.
Mira crouched and touched one.
Her eyes widened.
"These aren’t runes."
Kael frowned.
"What are they?"
"Names."
Second immediately stepped closer.
"Names of what?"
Mira shook her head.
"I don’t know."
Third looked at the glowing lines.
"I do."
Everyone turned toward him.
Third’s expression was unusually serious.
"These are names of places."
Kael frowned.
"Places?"
Third nodded.
"Aetheris isn’t the first place that existed here."
The ground trembled.
A portion of the foundation split apart.
Beneath it was darkness.
Not soil.
Not stone.
A massive void.
Mira stared.
"There is nothing beneath the academy."
Kael looked down.
"There is now."
Third shook his head.
"No."
He pointed.
"There was always something beneath it."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Then why couldn’t anyone see it?"
"Because it was hidden by definition."
Kael sighed.
"I really need a dictionary for this world."
The System appeared.
[The System recommends not attempting to understand Third’s explanations.]
Kael stared.
"Thanks."
[The System has observed that understanding him tends to produce additional questions.]
Third looked at the notification.
"You’re rude."
Kael blinked.
"You can see the System?"
Third stared at him.
"Yes."
Second looked at Third.
"You didn’t tell me that."
"You didn’t ask."
Second’s expression darkened.
Kael smiled.
"This is going to be a long day."
A thunderous sound interrupted them.
BOOOOOOM!
Aetheris rose higher.
The black door was now directly above the academy.
Its edges were beginning to disappear.
Observer remained beyond it.
Kael could see him more clearly now.
The masked man was standing in a vast white corridor.
Behind him were countless doors.
Thousands.
Maybe millions.
Each one carried a different symbol.
Kael’s eyes widened.
"What is that?"
Observer raised his hand.
Then pointed behind himself.
A single door opened.
Black.
Crown.
Eye.
Broken chain.
The same symbol.
Kael’s breath caught.
Then Observer pointed toward another door.
It was white.
No symbol.
Then another.
Red.
Then another.
Silver.
Each seemed to lead somewhere else.
Kael understood.
Those weren’t doors inside the First Story.
They were doors to different stories.
Different worldlines.
Different possibilities.
The First Story wasn’t merely a place.
It was connected to countless others.
Observer’s voice suddenly echoed through the academy.
"You need to understand!"
Kael looked up.
"What?"
"Don’t break the door!"
Kael blinked.
"You literally told me not to let it close!"
"I said don’t let it close!"
"You could’ve specified!"
Observer’s shoulders lowered.
Even from this distance, Kael could almost imagine him sighing.
"Then listen carefully."
The entire academy trembled.
Observer pointed toward the door.
"The First Story isn’t opening anymore."
Kael’s expression changed.
"Then what is it doing?"
"It is choosing."
A chill passed through Kael.
"Choosing what?"
Observer looked directly at him.
"Who gets to leave."
Silence.
Then—
The door began shrinking.
Not closing.
Shrinking.
The enormous black entrance became smaller.
Smaller.
Smaller.
Until it was barely large enough for a single person.
Kael’s eyes widened.
"No."
He immediately understood.
The First Story was selecting.
Only one person could pass.
The rest would remain trapped.
Mira looked at Kael.
"So that’s why the academy is being pulled toward it."
Kael nodded.
"The academy is being used as a bridge."
Third corrected him.
"No."
Kael looked at him.
"The academy isn’t the bridge."
Third pointed downward.
"The academy is the sacrifice."
The words hit everyone.
Elena’s expression hardened.
"What does that mean?"
Third looked at the academy.
"If Aetheris is completely absorbed into the First Story, the door will have enough narrative mass to remain open."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"And everyone inside?"
Third looked at him.
"They become part of it."
Leon stepped forward.
"Then we stop it."
Kael looked at him.
Leon smiled.
"Simple."
Kael laughed.
"Nothing about this is simple."
"I know."
Leon raised his sword.
"But we can still try."
Mira nodded.
"There’s something else."
She pointed toward the academy’s central tower.
"The mana core."
Kael followed her gaze.
Aetheris’s central tower was glowing.
Brilliant white light pulsed from its center.
Mira continued.
"The academy’s mana core is connected to every magical barrier and structure."
Kael understood.
"If we shut it down—"
"The academy may stop rising."
Mira nodded.
"But the academy might collapse."
Elena stepped forward.
"Then we need to stabilize it first."
Kael looked around.
"Where’s Lucien?"
A voice answered.
"Behind you."
Kael spun.
Professor Lucien Graves stood in the corridor.
His robe was torn.
His glasses were cracked.
A strange black mark covered one side of his face.
But he was alive.
Kael miled.
"Professor."
Lucien adjusted his glasses.
"Don’t call me that."
"Why?"
"Because every time you do, something terrible happens."
Kael stared.
"You’ve noticed too?"
Lucien sighed.
"Yes."
Mira rushed toward him.
"Professor, can you stabilize the mana core?"
Lucien nodded.
"I can."
"Then do it."
"There is a problem."
Kael frowned.
"What?"
Lucien pointed toward the central tower.
"The mana core isn’t responding to me."
Mira’s eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
Lucien’s expression became grim.
"Because someone else has already taken control."
Kael’s expression hardened.
"Who?"
Lucien looked toward the sky.
"The First Story."
---
The Central Tower
Kael, Leon, Mira, Elena, Lucien, Second, and Third raced through the academy.
Every corridor was changing.
Walls shifted.
Doors appeared where none had existed.
Paintings changed.
Statues disappeared.
Some students stopped in the middle of the halls, suddenly unable to remember where they were.
Kael grabbed one student by the shoulder.
"Hey!"
The boy stared at him blankly.
"Who are you?"
"Kael."
The boy frowned.
"I don’t know anyone named Kael."
Kael’s heart tightened.
The erasure was spreading.
The student looked around.
"Where am I?"
"Aetheris Academy."
The boy shook his head.
"What is that?"
Kael looked toward Lucien.
"It’s happening faster."
Lucien nodded.
"Yes."
Kael released the student.
"Take him with you."
One professor nodded and guided the boy away.
Kael turned.
"We’re running out of time."
The System appeared.
[WORLDLINE UPDATE]
Aetheris Academy narrative integrity: 29%.
Existence stability: 54%.
Estimated complete erasure: 2 Hours, 18 Minutes.
Kael stared.
"We lost over ten percent already."
Lucien nodded.
"The First Story is consuming the academy’s history."
Mira looked around.
"So if we preserve the history—"
"We preserve the academy."
Kael’s eyes sharpened.
"How?"
Lucien looked at him.
"We need something that remembers."
Kael immediately thought of Pi.
He looked down.
Pi stared back.
"Pi."
Kael crouched.
"You’re a witness."
Pi nodded.
"Pi."
"You remember me before I became Kael."
"Pi."
Kael frowned.
"Can you remember the academy?"
Pi looked toward the corridor.
Its golden eye began glowing.
Images appeared in the air.
The first students.
The first teachers.
The first academy tower.
The first graduation ceremony.
The first magical barrier.
The first headmaster.
Thousands of memories unfolded.
Everyone stared.
Mira’s eyes widened.
"Pi is preserving the memories."
Lucien stared at the creature.
"That isn’t ordinary memory."
Kael looked at him.
"What is it?"
Lucien swallowed.
"Witness memory."
Kael frowned.
"Meaning?"
"Memory that doesn’t belong to an individual."
Lucien pointed toward the images.
"It belongs to existence itself."
Kael stared at Pi.
The little creature was glowing.
Its tiny wings had begun unfolding.
Not fully.
But enough.
Its black scales shimmered.
The black quill symbol appeared inside its golden eye.
Then—
A second symbol appeared.
A white circle.
Lucien’s expression changed.
"That’s impossible."
Kael looked at him.
"What?"
Lucien whispered:
"I’ve seen that symbol before."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"Where?"
"In the ruins."
"The same ruins where you found the black book?"
"Yes."
"What did it mean?"
Lucien shook his head.
"I never discovered its meaning."
Kael stared at Pi.
The creature suddenly spoke.
"Home."
Everyone froze.
Kael’s eyes widened.
"Pi?"
The creature looked at him.
"Home."
Kael crouched.
"You remember?"
Pi nodded.
Then it pointed toward the mana core.
"Home."
Kael’s expression changed.
"The mana core?"
Pi nodded.
Mira’s eyes widened.
"Pi thinks the mana core is its home?"
Lucien shook his head.
"No."
He looked at the creature.
"Not the mana core."
His face became pale.
"The academy."
Silence.
Kael slowly understood.
Pi wasn’t saying that the mana core was its home.
It was saving—
Aetheris itself was.
Or perhaps—
Something beneath Aetheris.
Something connected to Pi.
Kael looked toward the central tower.
"We’re almost there."
They continued running.
Then—
A voice echoed through the corridor.
"Kael."
He stopped.
Everyone froze.
The voice came again.
"Kael Veyron."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
A black line appeared across the corridor.
The white figure stepped out.
The protagonist of the First Story.
Its face still displayed one word.
PROTAGONIST.
It looked at Kael.
"You rejected your role."
Kael raised his sword.
"Yes."
"You protected the protagonist."
"Yes."
"You preserved the supporting characters."
Kael glanced at Mira and Elena.
"Yes."
"You interfered with the narrative."
"Yes."
The figure tilted its head.
"Then you have become an anomaly beyond classification."
Kael smiled.
"I’ve been called worse."
The figure raised its hand
The corridor changed.
The walls disappeared.
The floor vanished.
Everyone except Kael disappeared.
Kael fell.
"KAEL!"
Leon shouted.
Kael reached toward him.
His fingers missed.
Then
Darkness.
Kael landed on something hard.
He looked around.
The academy was gone.
He has standing in a vast black space.
No walls.
No floor.
No ceiling.
Just darkness.
Then someone walked toward him.
Kael froze.
Silver hair.
Violet eyes.
A familiar face.
Elena.
"Kael."
He stared.
"Elena?"
She smiled.
"Yes."
Kael took a step toward her.
Something felt wrong.
"You’re not Elena."
Her smile remained.
"Why would you say that?"
Kael’s hand moved toward his sword.
"Because Elena would already be yelling at me."
The fake Elena’s smile disappeared.
Kael drew his sword.
The illuion shattered.
Behind it stood the white protagonist.
"Interesting."
Kael raised his sword.
"You’re using people I care about against me."
"I am showing you what you value."
Kael’s expression hardened.
"No."
The figure tilted its head.
"What?"
"You’re showing me what you think I value."
Kael charged.
The figure raised its hand.
The world froze.
Kael’s sword stopped inches from its face.
The figure whispered:
"You still don’t understand."
Kael struggled against the invisible force.
"Understand what?"
"You cannot defeat a story by fighting its characters."
Kael gritted his teeth.
"Then I’ll fight the story itself."
The figure’s blank face changed.
The word PROTAGONIST disappeared.
For the first time, a face appeared.
Young.
Human.
Golden hair.
Blue eyes.
Leon.
Kael froze.
The figure smiled with Leon’s face.
"You already lost."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"What?"
"Because you care."
The world around them changed.
Aetheris appeared.
Leon stood at the center.
Mira.
Elena.
Lucien.
Second.
Third.
Pi.
All of them.
Then one by one—
They disappeared.
Kael’s heart tightened.
"No."
The fake Leon smiled.
"You cannot save everyone."
Kael’s sword trembled.
"You don’t know that."
"You will."
One by one, the people vanished.
Mira.
Elena.
Lucien.
Second.
Third.
Pi.
Kael stood alone.
The fake Leon looked at him.
"That’s your role."
Kael stared.
"Villain."
The word appeared.
Kael’s expression became calm.
Then—
He laughed.
The fake Leon frowned.
"Why are you laughing?"
Kael looked up.
"Because you made one mistake."
"What?"
"You think I need to save everyone."
Kael lowered his sword.
"I don’t.
The fake Leon stared.
Kael’s eyes sharpened
"I just need to make sure they get the chance to save themselves."
The illusion shattered.
The black space cracked.
CRACK!
The First Story screamed.
Kael’s Krma threads exploded outward.
Thousands.
Millions.
Every thread connected to someone.
Leon.
Mira.
Elena.
Lucien.
Second.
Third
Pi.
And Aetheris.
Kael grabbed the thread connected to the academy.
He pulled.
The world shook.
[NARRATIVE INTERFERENCE: OVERLOAD]
Warning: Excessive interference may attract higher-level attention.
Kael grinned.
"Let them watch."
He pulled harder.
The First Story screamed.
---
Above Aetheris
The black door suddenly stopped shrinking.
Observer looked up.
His crimson eyes widened.
"What...?"
The door began expanding.
Behind it—
Something moved.
Something enormous.
Something that had no name.
Observer stepped backward.
"No."
A white eye opened.
Then another.
Then thousands.
But beneath those eyes—
A shape appeared.
A crown.
An eye.
A broken chain.
And below it—
A single black quill.
Observer whispered:
"The First Name has awakened."
Then a voice spoke from behind him.
"You’re late."
Observer turned.
The Selector stood there.
Still masked.
Still holding no weapon.
Observer’s eyes narrowed.
"You."
The Selector looked toward Aetheris.
"He remembers."
"Yes."
"The FirstName?"
"Partially."
The Selector was silent.
Then they smiled beneath the mask.
"Then we still have time."
Observer looked at them.
"For what?"
The Selector pointed downward.
Kael’s Karma threads had wrapped around Aetheris.
The academy was no longer rising.
It was pulling the First Story downward.
Observer’s expression changed.
"What is he doing?"
The Selector answered:
"Making the story enter his world."
Observer’s eyes widened.
"That will kill him."
"No."
The Selector shook their head.
"It might."
Observer stared.
"That doesn’t sound reassuring."
The Selector’s gaze remained fixed on Kael.
"It doesn’t need to be."
A pause.
"It only needs to work."
---
Aetheris — Central Towe
Kael opened his eyes.
He was back.
The central tower stood before him.
Leon was beside him.
Mira.
Elena.
Lucien.
Second.
Third.
Pi.
Everyone was there.
The First Story’s protagonist stood several meters away.
Its white face was cracked.
The word PROTAGONIST was disappearing.
Kael looked toward the sky.
The black door was no longer above them.
It was behind them.
The entire First Story had been dragged into the worldline.
Lucien stared upward.
"You pulled it inside."
Kael breathed heavily.
"Yeah."
Mira looked horrified.
"That was a bad idea."
Kael nodded.
"Probably."
Elena looked at him.
"Then why did you do it?"
Kael looked at the sky.
"Because if it wanted Aetheris so badly..."
His eyes sharpened.
"Now it has to fight us on our ground."
The System appeared.
[UNPRECEDENTED EVENT DETECTED]
Host has successfully reversed narrative displacement.
First Story has entered the current worldline.
Worldline contamination: 17%.
Aetheris narrative integrity: 47%.
Erasure halted.
Kael stared.
"We did it."
The System paused.
Then—
[Correction.]
The immediate erasure has been halted.
Kael’s smile faded.
"What now?"
The System answered.
[The First Story is no longer trying to erase Aetheris.]
A pause.
[It is trying to replace the world.]
Kael’s expression became serious.
Above Aetheris, the sky began turning white.
Buildings across Eldoria flickered.
People froze.
Names appeared above their heads.
The city itself began changing.
Leon looked toward the horizon.
"What happens if it succeeds?"
Kael stared at the approaching white horizon.
The answer came from the First Story’s protagonist.
Its cracked face formed a smile.
"The story begins again."
Kael raised his sword.
"No."
His eyes hardened.
"This time..."
He looked at Leon.
Mira.
Elena.
Lucien.
Second.
Third.
Pi.
Then toward the white horizon.
"We write our own ending."
The protagonist smiled.
"Then prove it."
The sky shattered.
And something enormous stepped through.
