The Villain's Karma System

Chapter 29: The Thing Beyond the Sky

  • Next Chapter

The sky shattered.

Not metaphorically.

Not like glass reflecting sunlight.

It actually broke.

A web of enormous cracks spread across the heavens above Aetheris Academy, stretching from one horizon to the other. Through those cracks was not darkness, nor clouds, nor stars.

There was something else.

Something that should not have been visible.

Kael stood frozen on the highest platform of Aetheris, staring upward.

His breath caught.

Leon stood beside him, sword already drawn.

Mira’s hands trembled as she stared at the sky.

Elena’s violet eyes widened.

Even Lucien Graves had lost his usual composure.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Pi crawled onto Kael’s shoulder.

Its tiny golden eye stared upward.

"Pi..."

For once, there was no curiosity in its voice.

Only fear.

Kael slowly tightened his fingers around the hilt of his sword.

"What..."

His voice came out quieter than expected.

"...is that?"

Something moved behind the cracks.

A shadow.

At first, Kael thought it was a cloud.

Then the shadow moved again.

And he realized it was far too large.

Something was stepping through the broken sky.

Its first limb appeared.

It was enormous.

Not merely large enough to tower over Aetheris.

It was large enough that Kael couldn’t see where it ended.

A strange pale surface emerged through the cracks, covered in lines that resembled ancient writing.

The sky groaned.

Aetheris shook.

Windows shattered throughout the academy.

Several students screamed.

Then another part of the entity appeared.

A head.

Or perhaps something that only resembled one.

It had no recognizable face.

No mouth.

No nose.

Only a vast circular structure containing countless faint silver lights.

Each light resembled an eye.

Kael’s pupils contracted.

The System activated.

[WARNING.]

[An unidentified existence has entered the current worldline.]

[Classification: ERROR.]

[Species: None.]

[Entity Type: Unknown.]

[Level: Unable to calculate.]

[Authority: Unable to calculate.]

[Narrative Position: UNDEFINED.]

Kael stared at the final line.

"Undefined?"

The System responded immediately.

[Correct.]

Kael’s expression darkened.

"That’s not reassuring."

[The System was not attempting to reassure the Host.]

"Yeah. I noticed."

Leon glanced at him.

"You can still joke?"

Kael looked at the enormous thing descending from the sky.

"Apparently, I’m coping."

Mira swallowed.

"Kael..."

He turned.

"What?"

Her eyes were fixed on the creature.

"I can’t read it."

Kael frowned.

"You mean its mana?"

"No."

Mira shook her head.

"I mean its existence."

She pointed toward the entity.

"Everything has something. People have mana signatures. Monsters have magical patterns. Ancient artifacts have inscriptions. Even the First Story has a narrative structure."

Her finger trembled.

"But that..."

She lowered her hand.

"It doesn’t have anything."

Lucien’s expression became grim.

"That’s impossible."

Mira shook her head.

"Exactly."

The enormous entity finally emerged farther.

The cracks in the sky widened.

And then-

It looked down.

The entire academy went silent.

Kael felt something crawl through his mind.

Not a voice.

Not a thought.

A question.

Something was examining him

His Karma threads suddenly became visible.

Thousands of them.

No—

Millions.

They erupted around him like glowing strands extending into every direction.

Some connected to Leon.

Mira.

Elena.

Lucien.

Pi.

Aetheris.

The First Story.

The First Tower.

Second.

Third.

Even things Kael had never seen before.

And among those threads...

There was one connected directly to the creature above.

Kael’s face hardened.

"You’ve got to be kidding me."

Pi suddenly hissed.

"PI!"

Its tiny body trembled.

The golden eye widened.

Then the black eye turned completely white.

Kael noticed.

"Pi?"

The creature stared at the sky.

Its mouth opened.

"Before..."

Kael’s heart skipped.

Before.

The same word.

The word Pi had spoken after remembering him.

The word that had haunted him ever since.

Kael looked upward.

"Have you seen that thing before?"

Pi didn’t answer.

Instead, its tiny claws dug into his shoulder.

"Home."

Kael froze.

"What?"

Pi pointed toward the sky.

"Home."

Kael stared at it.

The enormous entity above them moved.

A sound followed.

Not thunder.

Not an explosion.

A voice.

The sound came from everywhere at once.

From the sky.

From the academy walls.

From beneath their feet.

From inside their minds.

"RETURNED."

The word shook the entire world.

Kael’s knees almost buckled.

His vision blurred.

The System flashed repeatedly.

[HIGH-LEVEL EXISTENCE DETECTED.]

[Karma structure destabilizing.]

[Identity restriction detected.]

[Return Authority reacting.]

Kael gritted his teeth.

"Not..."

He forced himself upright.

"...again."

The voice continued.

"FIRST."

Second suddenly looked up.

His face went pale.

Third’s expression changed for the first time.

Fear.

Real fear.

The enormous entity’s countless lights shifted.

Then—

"SECOND."

Second took a step backward.

"No."

Kael looked at him.

"You know it?"

Second shook his head.

"I know what it means."

"What?"

His eyes remained fixed on the sky.

"It knows our numbers."

Third slowly stepped forward.

"Not just our numbers."

Everyone looked at him.

Third’s gray eyes reflected the broken heavens.

"It knows what came before us."

Silence.

Leon raised his sword.

"Then maybe we should move."

Kael looked at him.

Leon pointed upward.

"Before it decides to come closer."

A thunderous crack echoed.

The entity descended another distance.

The pressure became unbearable.

Several students collapsed.

Magical barriers throughout Aetheris activated automatically.

One after another—

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

Hundreds of defensive formations appeared around the academy.

Lucien looked at the formations.

"They’re not attacking it."

Kael frowned.

"What?"

"They’re recognizing it."

Lucien’s voice was barely above a whisper.

"The academy’s defenses aren’t treating that thing as an intruder."/

Mira’s eyes widened.

"Then what are they treating it as?"

Lucien looked toward the academy’s central tower.

"A superior authority."

Kael’s expression changed.

"No."

He turned toward the academy.

The white walls were glowing.

Ancient symbols were appearing across them.

Symbols Kael had never seen before.

Then the academy spoke.

Not through a magical communication system.

Not through a person.

The entire structure spoke.

"WELCOME..."

Everyone froze.

The academy continued.

"...HOME."

Pi’s eye widened.

Kael’s heart pounded.

"Home?"

The word echoed.

Then something unexpected happened.

The enormous entity above began shrinking.

Not physically.

Its body remained impossibly vast.

But its presence—

its distance—

began collapsing.

The entity was becoming closer without moving.

Reality bent around it.

Kael’s Karma threads snapped taut.

Pain shot through his arm.

He grabbed his wrist.

"Argh!"

Elena immediately moved toward him.

"Kael!"

"I’m fine!"

He wasn’t.

His vision filled with black lines.

The Karma threads were being pulled.

Something was trying to follow them backward.

Toward their source.

Toward—

Kael’s eyes widened.

"The First Name."

Lucien looked at him.

"What?"

"It’s following my Karma thread."

Kael could see it now.

The creature wasn’t looking at Aetheris.

It wasn’t looking at Leon

It wasn’t even looking directly at him.

It was looking at the thing behind him.

His conceptual identity.

His First Name.

The thing even the Author couldn’t fully display.

Kael gritted his teeth.

"Whatever you are..."

He reached for the threads.

"...you’re not taking it."

The First Story Protagonist suddenly appeared behind him.

Its white robes were torn.

Its faceless head was cracked.

The word PROTAGONIST was gone from its face.

For the first time, it looked almost human.

It stared upward.

And whispered:

"Impossible."

Kael turned.

"You know it?"

The figure didn’t answer.

Kael stepped closer.

"You know that thing."

Still nothing.

"Answer me."

The Protagonist finally looked at him.

Its voice was different now.

Less authoritative.

More frightened.

"The First Story was never supposed to meet it."

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"What is it?"

The Protagonist shook its head.

"I don’t know."

Kael blinked.

"You don’t know?"

"No."

The Protagonist looked toward the sky.

"But I know what it means."

The enormous entity spoke again

"STORY."

The word shook the world.

The Protagonist suddenly dropped to one knee.

The First Story’s white robes began turning black.

Its body flickered.

Its existence was being overwritten.

Kael stared.

"Hey!"

He reached toward it.

The Protagonist raised one hand.

"Don’t."

Kael stopped.

The entity above spoke again.

"THE FIRST STORY..."

The Protagonist trembled.

"...IS NOT FIRST."

Silence.

Kael’s eyes widened.

The Protagonist’s cracked face tilted upward.

"No..."

For the first time, its voice carried genuine disbelief.

"No, that’s impossible."

The enormous entity continued.

"THERE WAS A STORY BEFORE THE FIRST."

Kael felt the world stop.

The System immediately appeared.

[New information detected.]

[Attempting classification...]

[Classification failed.]

[Warning.]

[The Host has encountered information outside the currently recognized narrative hierarchy.]

Kael stared upward.

"So even the First Story..."

He swallowed.

"...wasn’t the beginning?"

Third whispered:

"We knew it."

Second looked at him.

"We suspected."

Mira stared between them.

"You knew?"

Second’s expression was grim.

"Not this."

Third shook his head.

"We knew there were stories before ours."

Kael looked at them.

"Then why didn’t you tell me?"

Second’s eyes hardened.

"Because every time we remembered too much..."

He looked upward.

"...something noticed."

The entity’s countless eyes suddenly focused.

Not on Kael.

Not on Second.

Not on Third.

On Pi.

Pi froze.

Kael’s blood ran cold.

"No."

The enormous presence shifted.

The academy shook violently.

Pi’s golden eye began glowing

The black quill symbol appeared inside it.

Then the crown.

The eye.

The broken chain.

All four symbols appeared at once.

The System screamed.

[WARNING!]

[WITNESS MEMORY ACTIVATING WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION.]

[CONNECTION DETECTED.]

[HOST—PI—UNKNOWN EXISTENCE.]

[ATTEMPTING MEMORY ACCESS...]

Kael grabbed Pi.

"Stop!"

Pi’s body suddenly became surrounded by black light.

A memory appeared above them.

A white place.

A young Kael.

The Selector.

The black door.

But this time—

there was something behind the Selector.

Something enormous.

Something watching.

Kael stared.

The young version of himself turned toward it.

And said:

"Is that the thing you’re warning me about?"

The Selector answered.

"No."

A pause.

Then:

"That’s the thing we were running from."

Kael’s breath stopped.

The memory shattered.

Pi screamed.

"PI!"

The enormous entity above moved.

One of its countless eyes opened completely.

A beam of pale light descended.

Kael instinctively stepped in front of Pi.

Leon moved beside him.

Elena raised both hands.

Mira began constructing a spatial barrier.

Lucien activated an ancient spell.

Second and Third stood behind them.

The First Story Protagonist slowly rose.

For the first time, all of them stood facing the same enemy.

Kael drew his sword.

He knew it was absurd.

He knew his sword couldn’t possibly hurt something like this.

But he raised it anyway.

"Everyone..."

Leon smiled faintly.

"You’re giving orders now?"

Kael glanced at him.

"No."

He looked toward the descending light.

"I’m making a suggestion."

Leon raised his sword.

"Then let’s hear it."

Kael’s eyes hardened.

"Survive."

The beam struck.

BOOOOOOM!

The entire world disappeared into white.

---

Kael opened his eyes.

Silence.

He was standing somewhere unfamiliar.

There was no academy.

No sky.

No Leon.

No Elena.

No Mira.

No pi.

Nothing.

Only white.

Kael looked down.

His hands were empty.

His sword was gone.

His Karma threads were gone.

Even the System was silent.

Kael slowly turned.

A single black door stood behind him.

His heart sank.

"No..."

He approached it.

The door had the familiar symbols.

Crown.

Eye.

Broken chain.

But beneath them was something new.

A fourth symbol.

A symbol Kael had never seen before.

A circle surrounding an empty space.

He reached toward it.

The door opened by itself.

Beyond it was darkness.

Then a voice spoke.

Not the Author.

Not the First Story.

Not Fourth.

Not the Selector.

Something else.

Something Kael had never heard before.

"You finally came back."

Kael froze.

The voice continued.

"First."

Kael’s pupils contracted.

Then another voice whispered behind him.

"Kael."

He turned.

Pi stood there.

But Pi was different.

Larger.

Its wings were fully developed.

Its black scales were covered in faint golden markings.

And both of its eyes were open.

Golden.

And black.

Pi looked directly at him.

For the first time, its voice was perfectly clear.

"I remember where we died."

Kael’s blood turned cold.

"What?"

Pi looked toward the black door.

Then back at Kael.

"Not your first death."

A pause.

"The one before that."

The System suddenly returned.

But its usual calm tone was gone.

[CRITICAL SYSTEM ERROR.]

[Memory conflict detected.]

[Host identity contradiction detected.]

[Kael Veyron: FALSE.]

Kael stared at the notification.

Another line appeared.

[Previous identity: SEALED.]

Then—

[First Name: ACCESSING...]

Kael’s heart pounded.

For the first time, the System attempted to display the name.

The screen flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

[ERROR.]

[THE NAME CANNOT BE DISPLAYED.]

Kael stared at the message.

Then another line appeared

One that made his entire body go cold.

[Reason:]

[The Host is not the only one who remembers it.]

Behind him—

something knocked on the black door.

Once.

Knock.

Twice.

Knock.

Three times.

Knock.

Kael slowly turned.

The door began opening.

And from the darkness beyond it—

a single enormous white eye looked back.

"Found you."

The world went black.
