The Villain's Karma System

Chapter 30: The Name That Was Remembered

  • Next Chapter

Knock.

The sound echoed through the white void.

Kael didn’t move.

He couldn’t.

The enormous white eye stared through the opening of the black door.

It wasn’t like the eyes of the sky entity.

It wasn’t like the white eye Kael had encountered beyond the worldline.

And it wasn’t like Fourth.

This eye felt—

familiar.

That realization frightened him more than anything else.

Because Kael had never seen it before.

At least...

He didn’t think he had.

Pi stood beside him, completely still.

Its larger body trembled.

Its golden eye stared at the white eye.

Its black eye stared at Kael.

Then Pi whispered:

"Don’t."

Kael looked at it.

"Don’t what?"

Pi’s mouth opened.

For several seconds, no sound came out.

Then—

"Remember."

Kael’s expression hardened.

"Remember what?"

Pi lowered its head.

"You."

Silence.

Kael stared.

"That’s not an answer."

Pi’s claws dug into the white floor.

"You remember being Kael."

Its golden eye flickered.

"But not being..."

The sentence stopped.

Kael waited.

Pi looked toward the door.

"...before."

A cold sensation spread through Kael’s chest.

The System appeared.

[Memory Recovery Process Interrupted.]

[Reason: External interference.]

Kael frowned.

"External interference?"

[Correct.]

"From that thing?"

[Unknown.]

Kael looked at the eye.

"Then identify it."

A pause.

[Classification unavailable.]

"Of course."

Kael sighed.

"Why did I even ask?"

[The System recommends asking less predictable questions.]

Kael blinked.

"...Did you just insult me?"

[No.]

A pause.

[The System merely stated an observation.]

Kael rubbed his forehead.

"Great. Even my System is becoming annoying."

The eye moved.

Not the door.

Not the creature behind it.

Just the eye.

It rotated slightly.

Then—

the white surface around it began changing.

Lines appeared.

Thousands of them.

They formed symbols across the void.

Kael recognized some.

Crown.

Eye.

Broken Chain.

Quill.

But there were others.

Symbols he had never seen.

A spiral.

A circle.

A hand.

A closed eye.

And finally—

a name.

Kael’s breath caught.

The letters were impossible to read.

Not because they were written in another language.

Because every time his eyes focused on them, his mind rejected them.

The System reacted violently.

[WARNING.]

[CONCEPTUAL IDENTITY DETECTED.]

[Attempting translation.]

[Translation failed.]

Kael clenched his fists.

"Show me."

[Unable.]

"Show me anyway."

[Unable.]

"System."

The screen flickered.

For the first time, Kael sensed something unusual.

The System wasn’t refusing.

It was struggling.

[The System does not possess authority over this information.]

Kael went silent.

That was new.

The System had called things unknown.

It had called things impossible.

It had failed to classify countless entities.

But this was different.

It was admitting that something was outside its authority.

Kael slowly approached the symbols.

"What is this place?"

Pi answered.

"Before."

Kael glanced at it.

"You keep saying that word."

Pi nodded.

"Because this is before."

"Before what?"

Pi looked at him.

"Before the story."

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

The First Story.

The Author.

The worldline.

The academy.

Everything he had discovered seemed to lead backward.

But if this place existed before the First Story...

Then what had created it?

A sound suddenly came from the black door.

Scrape.

Something was moving behind it.

Kael stepped backward.

The white eye disappeared.

Then a hand emerged.

It was pale.

Almost completely white.

Its fingers were unnaturally long.

Kael raised his hands.

Karma threads immediately appeared.

He reached for them.

Nothing happened.

No response.

No resistance.

The threads simply—

weren’t there.

Kael’s expression changed.

"Where are my Karma threads?"

Pi answered quietly.

"They can’t exist here."

"Why?"

"Because there is no karma here."

Kael stared at it.

"That’s impossible."

Pi shook its head.

"No."

Its golden eye reflected the empty white world.

"That’s why this place is dangerous."

The hand emerged farther.

Then another.

Something was pulling itself through the door.

Kael stepped backward.

"System."

[Yes.]

"Give me something useful."

[Suggestion:]

[Run.]

Kael stared.

"...You’re serious?"

[Extremely.]

For once, Kael didn’t argue.

He grabbed Pi and turned.

There was nowhere to run.

The white voi stretched endlessly in every direction.

No walls.

No horizon.

No floor beyond the place where he stood.

Kael cursed under his breath.

"Wonderful."

Pi suddenly pointed.

"There."

Kael looked.

A tiny black line had appeared in the distance.

A crack.

It slowly widened.

Beyond it was—

Aetheris.

Kael could see the academy.

The shattered sky.

Leon.

Elena.

Mira.

Lucien.

Second.

Third.

The First Story Protagonist.

They were all standing in the ruins.

Kael’s eyes widened.

"That’s our world."

Pi nodded.

"Yes."

Kael looked toward the door.

Then the crack.

Then back at Pi.

"How do we get there?"

Pi stared at the crack.

"You have to choose."

"Choose what?"

Pi didn’t answer.

Instead, the world around Kael began changing.

The white floor beneath him became transparent.

Images appeared beneath his feet.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Different versions of Kael.

One was a child.

One was an adult.

One wore armor.

One wore black robes.

One stood beside Leon.

Another stood against him.

One was surrounded by corpses—

Kael immediately looked away.

Another sat alone beneath a tree.

Another held Pi.

Another stood before the Selector.

And another...

wasn’t human.

Kael’s eyes widened.

"What is this?"

Pi whispered:

"Possibilities."

Kael stared at the endless versions.

"Are they memories?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Pi’s answer was almost inaudible.

"Names."

Kael froze.

The System appeared again.

[Conceptual Identity Layer detected.]

[Multiple potential identities identified.]

[WARNING.]

[Selecting an identity may permanently alter Host’s narrative structure.]

Kael’s expression darkened.

"So that’s what this place does."

Pi nodded.

"It chooses what you are."

Kael looked at the black door.

"And that thing?"

Pi’s body trembled.

"It wants to choose for you."

Kael looked at the images again.

He understood.

The First Story had tried to call him VILLAIN.

The Author had attempted to control his narrative.

The white entities had tried to assign him an identity.

The City of Names had rejected Kael Veyron.

And now—

something older was offering him thousands of possible identities.

Kael laughed.

A quiet, humorless laugh.

"So that’s the game."

The hand behind the black door moved again.

Kael looked toward it.

"No."

He shook his head.

"I’m done letting other people decide what I am."

The System flickered.

[Statement detected.]

[Narrative Interference responding.]

Kael’s eyes widened.

A faint thread appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

His Karma threads were returning.

But they were different.

They weren’t attached to people.

They weren’t attached to the world.

They were attached to him.

Every version of Kael beneath his feet suddenly became connected.

Kael could feel them.

Their fear.

Their choices.

Their regrets.

Their victories.

Their failures.

None of them were him.

But all of them—

could have been.

The System displayed a new message.

[Special condition detected.]

[Host is attempting to establish identity without external assignment.]

[Calculating...]

The screen froze.

Then—

[Identity Authority: 7%]

Kael blinked.

"Seven percent?"

[Correct.]

"That’s pathetic."

[It is an improvement.]

"Fair."

The black door suddenly exploded open.

A wave of white energy rushed outward.

Kael raised his arm.

The impact sent him sliding across the floor.

Pi was thrown from his shoulder.

"PI!"

Kael lunged.

He caught Pi before it disappeared into the void.

The moment his fingers touched Pi—

everything stopped.

The white world vanished.

Kael was standing in a room.

A familiar room.

His old room.

From his previous life.

The desk.

The chair.

The shelves.

The computer.

The fantasy novels.

Kael stared.

"No..."

A book rested on the desk.

Chronicles of the Fallen World.

His heart began pounding.

He approached.

The book was open.

On the page was the original story.

Kael reognized the scene.

The moment original Kael Veyron was supposed to die.

But something was wrong.

The page wasn’t describing him.

It was describing Kael.

Not Kael Veyron.

The person from his previous life.

The narration read:

The boy closed the book.

Kael’s breath stopped.

Another line appeared.

He wondered what it would be like to live inside the world he had just read about.

Kael stepped backward.

"No."

The page changed.

He wished for another life.

Kael’s hands trembled.

"I didn’t..."

Another sentence appeared.

And something heard him.

The room became cold.

Kael stared at the page.

Then—

the black quill appeared.

It hovered above the book.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"You."

The quill began writing.

YOU ASKED.

Kael froze.

The quill continued.

YOU WERE HEARD.

Another sentence appeared.

BUT I WAS NOT THE ONE WHO ANSWERED.

Kael stared.

The quill stopped.

Then wrote:

I ONLY WROTE WHAT HAPPENED AFTERWARD.

Kael’s mind raced.

"The Author..."

The quill wrote again.

NOT THE FIRST.

Kael looked at the book.

The words began changing.

THE AUTHOR CAME AFTER.

His heartbeat accelerated.

"Then who?"

The quill moved.

But before it could finish—

Pi screamed.

"KAEL!"

The room shattered.

Kael snapped back into the white void.

The enormous eye was directly in front of him.

Closer than before.

Far too close

The eye filled his entire vision.

And then—

it spoke.

Not with a voice.

With a memory.

Kael saw himself.

Not seventeen.

Not twenty.

Not even human.

He stood in a place without time.

Beside him was Pi.

But Pi was enormous.

Behind them stood the Selector.

And in front of them—

was a door.

The same black door.

Kael watched his younger self reach toward it.

The Selector grabbed his wrist.

"Don’t."

Young Kael looked at them.

"Why?"

"Because if you open it..."

The Selector hesitated.

"...you’ll remember everything."

Young Kael smiled.

"Maybe that’s what I want."

The Selector shook their head.

"No."

They looked toward Pi.

"You won’t remember being yourself."

Young Kael frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The Selector’s face became solemn.

"It means you’ll remember being the one who chose."

The memory ended.

Kael staggered backward.

His head throbbed.

"Chose..."

Pi looked at him.

"Yes."

Kael stared.

"What did I choose?"

Pi didn’t answer.

The white eye slowly closed.

Then opened again.

A final message appeared.

Not from the System.

Not from the Author.

Not from the First Story.

Written directly across the white void:

YOU CHOSE TO RETURN.

Kael stared.

Then another sentence appeared.

YOU CHOSE TO FORGET.

His breathing became unsteady.

And finally—

YOU CHOSE YOUR FIRST NAME.

Kael’s eyes widened.

The System suddenly erupted.

[CRITICAL DISCOVERY.]

[Host’s First Name is not a designation.]

[It is a command.]

Kael stared at the words.

"A command?"

[Correct.]

"What does it command?"

The System went silent.

Kael waited.

Nothing.

"System?"

Still nothing.

Then—

[Unknown.]

Kael almost laughed.

"Of course."

A crack appeared in the white void.

Then another.

The entire space began collapsing.

Pi looked toward the distant opening leading back to Aetheris.

"We have to go."

Kael nodded.

He looked at the black door one final time.

The enormous white eye was gone.

But something had been left behind.

A single black feather.

Kael picked it up.

The moment he touched it—

the System flashed.

[Item obtained.]

[Unknown Feather.]

[Origin: Unknown.]

[Function: Unknown.]

Kael stared at it.

"You’re really committed to that word."

[Correct.]

The crack leading back to Aetheris widened.

Kael grabbed Pi.

"Let’s go."

They jumped.

---

Kael landed hard on the broken platform of Aetheris.

The impact knocked the breath from him.

"Kael!"

Elena rushed toward him.

Leon was already fighting nearby.

Mira’s spatial barriers were collapsing.

Lucien was shouting something.

The academy was in chaos

Kael pushed himself upright.

"How long was I gone?"

Elena stared at him.

"Three seconds."

Kael froze.

"Three seconds?"

Lucien turned sharply.

"To us."

Kael looked toward the sky.

The enormous entity was still there.

But something had changed.

The First Story Protagonist was standing beneath it.

Its cracked face was completely blank.

No word.

No role.

No identity.

Then it looked toward Kael.

And smiled.

Kael’s expression hardened.

"You look pleased."

The Protagonist tilted its head.

"I understand now."

"Understand what?"

Its voice was quiet.

"The thing beyond the sky isn’t here for the First Story."

Kael’s grip tightened.

"Then what does it want?"

The Protagonist looked directly at Pi.

"It wants the Witness."

Pi froze.

Kael stepped forward.

"Then it’s going to have to come through me."

The Protagonist shook its head.

"No."

Its smile disappeared.

"It already did."

Kael’s eyes widened.

Behind him—

Pi suddenly screamed.

A black mark appeared across its back.

The same quill symbol from the white eye.

Kael spun around.

"Pi!"

The symbol pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then the System displayed a single message.

[WITNESS MEMORY OVERRIDDEN.]

Kael’s blood ran cold.

A second notification appeared.

[Foreign narrative authority detected.]

Then—

[Pi is no longer remembering.]

A pause.

[Something else is remembering through Pi.]

Kael stared at his companion.

Pi slowly raised its head.

Its golden eye had turned completely white.

Its black eye had turned gold.

Then it spoke.

But the voice wasn’t Pi’s.

"First."

Kael couldn’t move.

The creature smiled.

"You finally remembered enough."

The sky above Aetheris split open again.

And this time—

something looked through.

Not an eye.

A face.

A face Kael recognized.

A face from his previous life.

The face of the person who had stood beside him in the white room.

The face of the Selector.

Kael’s blood ran cold.

The face smiled.

And spoke one sentence.

"Now remember my name."

The world shook.
